House in the Basement in Sevenoaks has partnered with Sevenoaks District Council and Millwall Community Trust to run sessions for young people aged 11-17 who are not in education, employment or training.
The project started in March with four sessions and a total of 11 young people. In April there were three sessions which seven young people attended.
These sessions are an opportunity to develop skills within a small group, and for young people to hear from inspiring speakers from a range of different backgrounds. There may also be hands-on activities like baking and crafts.
These sessions run every Tuesday during term time at House in the Basement from 1.30pm until 3.30pm. The programme will not be running over the school holidays but House in the Basement will be open as usual.
House in the Basement is run in the basement of the Stag Community Arts Centre, London Road, Sevenoaks, TN13 1ZZ.
It is a youth café and is a fully accessible site with an access ramp for wheelchair users, and with refreshments and snacks available on site.
For our opening times please check our website: www.houseinthebasement.weebly.com

A Summer of Family Fun
Join us for a summer of outdoor play at Chartwell, Emmetts Garden and Quebec House where we have plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
At Chartwell, follow in the footsteps of Jock, our resident cat, on our children’s trail around the garden. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the great cat himself! In the house, there are more animals to spot in our family trail before heading out into the estate to explore the treehouse or bomb crater for more adventures.
At beautiful Emmetts Garden, enjoying a summer of play is the main event with free games equipment to borrow. It’s the perfect opportunity to challenge friends and family to a bit of healthy competition! Our wild play area is situated right next to the café for when all that activity has worked up an appetite.
The delightful setting of Quebec House in Westerham is an opportunity for some quieter but no less busy play! Enjoy traditional games on the lawn, archery every Wednesday in August, and even a spot of yoga (selected dates).
We’re all set for a summer of fun, all included in our usual admission price! To find out more, visit our websites:

QuestFriendz STEM Activities
Why not try these four fun activities inspired by QuestFriendz? Join the SuperQuesters in these ocean-themed activities this summer to find new ways to get involved in cleaning up our environment and have some STEM fun.
1. Salt Dough Starfish
You will need 500g plain flour, 250g salt, 230 ml water, a baking tray, and a toothpick.
Activity: Study some images of starfish. What do they notice about their homes, bodies, and patterns? Preheat the oven to 250°C. Combine the ingredients until it forms a dough. Find a picture of a starfish and using the images, shape the dough into a starfish shape, using the toothpick to add the starfish’s details. You might want to try making other sea creatures too! Bake for 2 hours or leave to air dry.
2.Build a Boat Challenge
You will need a range of recyclable materials, such as yoghurt pots, aluminium trays and bottles, old fabric, lollypop sticks, and cardboard tubes, as well as various joining materials, such as elastic bands, tape, and play dough.
Activity: Discuss boats and look at images. Decide on the fundamental aspects of a boat and what they might need. Set a challenge to create a boat that floats with a mast and sail using recyclable materials. Once complete, test the boats and check whether they sail. If they don’t work, assess why not, and help decide how they can adjust it.
3. Frozen Aquarium
You will need four large containers, a selection of plastic sea animals and shells, water, blue food colouring, salt, sugar, cotton wool, tin foil,
Activity: Prepare beforehand. Mix blue food colouring with water, enough for each container, and fill. Then, add the sea animals and shells and put them in the freezer overnight. Before using, remove them from the freezer and predict whether salt, sugar, cotton wool, or tin foil will melt the ice the fastest. Then, test your theory using each material as you think best; for example, sprinkling the salt on one block of ice and shrouding another in cotton wool. You might wrap one in the tin foil and sit another in sugar- it’s up to you. Great for a sunny day!
4. Ocean Clean-Up Tray
You will need a large plastic box or container, water to half-fill the container, a selection of plastic sea animals and boats, and shells, 250ml vegetable oil, 2 tbsp cocoa powder, 3 tbsp coffee grinds, a handful of shredded plastic, toothbrushes and cloths, washing-up liquid, and warm, soapy water.
Activity: Fill the box half full with water and add the plastic animals, boats and shells. Mix the vegetable oil and cocoa powder, then let your children watch as you dribble it over the animals and boats. Then sprinkle over the coffee grinds and add some shredded plastic. Discuss the changes they can see and what has happened. How does it make them feel? Then link it to pollution in the sea. Ask the children to help clean up the animals and boats using warm, soapy water.
Dr Thomas Bernard is co-author of the SuperQuesters series. The latest book, The Case of the Angry Sea sees the SuperQuesters having fun whilst learning about water pollution and finding ways to clean local rivers. For more STEM activities and resources checkout QuestFriendz at www.questfriendz.com. Books available from all good bookstores.
