CASPA • Life with Autism CASPA CHILDREN ON THE AUTISTIC SPECTRUM PARENTS ASSOCIATION CASPA is a unique, rapidly growing and award winning charity that was set up in 2002, providing a wide range of support services to autistic people ages 0-100yrs and their families as well as autism awareness, neurodiversity and inclusion training to organisations in order to increase true understanding of ‘Life with Autism’. Daisy First Aid • Bites and Stings

FIRST AID FOR STINGS & BITES The warmer weather is finally here but unfortunately it brings with it the increased risk of stings and bites from various insects and bugs. Most are not serious and will improve within a few hours or days, but they often cause discomfort or pain, so quick and effective first aid treatment is needed. First Aid treatment for many stings and bites is to: • Clean the area with soap and water. • Apply a cold compress for 10 minutes to help relieve any discomfort and reduce any swelling. • Encourage your child not to touch or scratch the affected area to reduce the risk of infection. For some bites and stings specific actions need to be taken – here are some of those that you may come across over the spring and summer months.

Nettle Stings If your child has been stung by nettles, they may experience a stinging sensation which can then become itchy. Physical signs to look out for would be raised red or white bumps and the surrounding area maybe red. Dock leaves are often thought of as a remedy however, they are not a medically proven treatment. They also involve rubbing the sting which can push the toxins further into the skin, causing the pain to last longer. The best way to treat a nettle sting is to: • NOT touch the area for 10 minutes. • After 10 minutes wash the area with soap and water. If this is not possible use a clean wipe or cloth. • Cleaning the affected area should help relieve the pain. • Apply tape (which can be found in first aid kits) to the area to help remove any remaining fibres. • If your child is still in discomfort a cold compress can be applied to provide some relief.

Tick Bites Tick bites are often something we associate with dogs and other animals however they can bite us too. They are not always easy to spot as they vary in size and can be mistaken for a freckle or mole. Also, their bites are not always painful. Therefore, if you visit the woods or have been in long grass, particularly in areas with wild deer ensure you check everyone thoroughly for any ticks that may have attached themselves. (See image above for what to look for). Although rare, ticks can carry Lyme disease and so they should be removed as soon as possible with a specific tick removal tool which can be purchased from your local vets or online to ensure the whole tick is removed.

To remove a tick and treat the bite: • Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible with the tick removal tool and gently pull it upwards ensuring you do not squeeze or crush it. • Dispos e of it safely once it is removed. • Clean the bite with soap and water plus remember to wash your hands too! DO NOT try to remove a tick with Vaseline, alcohol, a cigarette end or a match. See a GP if: • A red circular ‘bulls-eye’ rash like the image above develops. • Flu like symptoms develop such as nausea or vomiting, feeling hot or aching muscles.

Daisy First Aid • Bites and Stings Oak Processionary Moth Caterpillar This species of caterpillar nest on Oak trees and if spotted should be reported to the Forestry Commission by emailing opm@forestrycommission.gov.uk. The caterpillars have thousands of tiny hairs, which contain an irritating substance called thaumetopoein. Contact with these hairs can cause itching skin rashes. Less common reactions are, sore throats, breathing difficulties and eye irritations. The tiny hairs can be blown around, so you do not have to touch the caterpillars to come into contact with the hairs themselves, just be nearby. To remove the hairs and treat: • Use tweezers to remove the hairs. • Rinse your skin with running water and allow it to air dry. • Then use tape (which can be found in first aid kits) to the area to help remove any remaining hairs. • Apply a cold compress. Calamine or a Pharmacy specific remedy can be purchased from a pharmacy and used if needed. • Remove all clothing and wash at the highest temperature possible for the fabrics. DO NOT towel yourself dry after rinsing or use creams containing antihistamine.

Bee and Wasp Stings Picnic’s, BBQ’s and any food or drink always seem to attract wasps especially late summer to early Autumn when they are more prone to stinging when there is less of their own food around for them. Also look out for them when walking barefoot or in sandals as they can sting if you were to stand on them accidentally. When a Wasp stings there is often a sharp pain then a red lump, swelling and redness around the area may develop which can be uncomfortable for several hours. Bee stings have the same symptoms although Bee’s often leave their sting behind which is normally visible and needs to be removed before cleaning the area. To remove a Bee sting: • Use the edge of a credit card to swipe cleanly along the skin towards the sting removing it quickly and efficiently as well as the venom sac around it. To treat Bee & Wasp stings: • Wash the affected area with soap and water. • For pain relief and to reduce swelling a cold compress can be applied. • If needed age-appropriate antihistamine or painkillers can be given.

Jelly Fish and other Sea Creature Stings When playing by the sea there is chance that we may get stung. In the UK, many sea creature stings are not serious but can be very painful so quick first aid treatment is needed. For any ‘Friends’ fans – DO NOT wee on a jelly fish sting to relieve the pain, it does not help! If your child is stung, they will have an intense pain at the affected area and an itchy rash may develop. Jelly fish can also cause raised circular areas (welts) to develop (see image above). To treat a jelly fish and other sea creature stings: • Rinse the affected area with seawater (not fresh water). • Remove any spines from the skin using tweezers or the edge of a bank card. • Soak the area in very warm water (as hot as can be tolerated but be careful not to burn their skin) for at least 30 minutes – use hot flannels or towels if you cannot soak it.

DO NOT • Wee on the sting. • Apply an ice pack or cold compress. • Touch the spines with your bare hands. • Cover or close the wound. Contact your GP or dial 111 if: • They are stung on the face or genital area. • The severe pain does not improve. Dial 999 if they have: • Chest pain. • Fits or seizures. • Severe swelling around the affected area. • Severe bleeding.

For all Stings and Bites Dial 111 or visit your GP / pharmacy if: • You are concerned. • Symptoms do not improve or deteriorate. • Flu like symptoms or a temperature develops. • The affected area is in or around the mouth, eyes or throat. • A large area around the affected area is red and swollen. Dial 999 immediately if they: • Have any difficulty breathing or wheezing. • Show signs of anaphylaxis or a severe allergic reaction – symptoms may include swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue and airway. • Feel nauseous or vomit. • Have a fast heart rate. • Feel dizzy or fall unconscious.

Jack Monroe's Del Monte Peach Drizzle Cake Prep time: 15 minutes, Cooking time: 60 minutes, plus 30 minutes cooling time Ingredients: • 1 can (425g) Del Monte® Peach Slices in Juice • 250g butter (softened) or baking spread • 200g finely ground white sugar • 3 medium eggs • 250g self-raising flour or 250g plain flour plus 1 1/2 tbsp baking powder • 100g icing sugar

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180oC, Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a large loaf tin. 2. Strain the can of Del Monte® Peach Slices, reserving the juice to use later on for the icing. 3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter (or baking spread) and sugar. Mix well to form an even buttercream.

4. Break in one egg and mix well, using a fork to combine it with the buttercream mixture. Repeat the same process with the remaining two eggs. 5. Add the baking powder, a pinch of salt and the flour, a quarter at a time, mixing well to combine evenly each time before adding more. 6. Finally, add in the drained peaches and stir in. They will carry some residual juice that will pool at the edges of your batter, so mix this in well, but try not to break up the soft peach slices too much in the process. 7. When the batter is even and smooth, pour it into your prepared tin, jostling the peach slices so that they are evenly distributed throughout. 8. Bake in the centre of the oven for 50 minutes to an hour or until a knife inserted in the centre comes out almost clean (if the knife comes out with some batter attached, turn the oven down to 140oC and check every 10 minutes until done). Oven temperatures may vary, so check your cake carefully. 9. Remove from the oven and loosen the edges of the loaf with a sharp knife or palette knife. Let it stand for 30 minutes before removing it from the tin and leaving to cool completely on a wire rack. 10. For the icing: Ensure the loaf has cooled enough before you start icing - you want to be able to touch it with your fingertips for a few seconds and not register that it’s warm. Sieve the icing sugar into a large mixing bowl and add 1 tbsp of the reserved peach juice. Mix well to make a smooth, thick icing. Drizzle the icing over the top and leave to set for 30 minutes. Tip 1: If you would like a little more moisture on the cake, you can boil the juice down a little to make a syrup (add a few teaspoonfuls of sugar if you want it really sticky and sweet). Gently punch some holes in the top of the cake with a fork, drizzle the syrup over and allow it to sink in a little before topping with the icing drizzle. Tip 2: Leftovers will keep for up to four days in an airtight clean container in a cool dark place, or four months in the freezer. Best frozen in slices and defrosted whenever you fancy a quick treat!

With the Government having confirmed that they are on track to end lockdown and fully reopen theatres from 19 July, now is the perfect time to book your family theatre visit. From hit musicals like Mary Poppins, The Prince Of Egypt and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie to family favourites Billionaire Boy, The Tiger Who Came To Tea and Dinosaur World Live, a huge range of shows are offering free tickets to children aged 17 and under when accompanied by a full paying adult - with additional children going half price. The offer has been set up slightly differently this year, so although it will be the same fantastic deal in terms of what you pay, instead of one full price ticket and one free child ticket it will be presented as two half price tickets. 3H Helping Hands for Holidays

Holidays for those with disabilities can be difficult to find and this was exactly the scenario faced by a Kent couple back in the early seventies who had a son with severe disabilities. They wanted a family holiday together but finding a safe and adapted venue proved to be a challenge. They knew they weren’t the only family facing this dilemma but felt that having disabilities shouldn’t prevent someone from having a break away; the chance to try new things and make new friends. Terry and Muriel Godwin formed 3H Fund (Helping Hands for Holidays) formerly known as 3H Fund (Help the Handicapped Holiday Fund) in 1975 to provide holiday opportunities for their son and families who faced similar needs. 45 years later the charity is still organising holidays for children and adults with disabilities! To help boost much needed funding, the charity opened its first ‘charity’ shop in 1980 in Camden Road, Tunbridge Wells which was open for 22 years! The shop was very successful and raised vital funds to enable the charity to continue its work. A second shop was subsequently opened in Tonbridge in 1989. The two annual holidays organised by Muriel became extremely popular and with the generosity of local businesses and fundraising from individuals, in 1984 3H extended their number of holidays to three a year. Over the coming years, the number of holidays increased and included journeys abroad. In 2005 the availability of additional funding meant that a grant programme could be set up to enable low income families with a disabled member to organise their own holiday in the UK. This initiative has become so popular over the years that it is always oversubscribed as families approach the charity for financial help towards a break. Fundraising is still the most challenging aspect as, without help from trusts, businesses and individuals, the charity would be unable to continue but with the generosity of volunteers, trusts and businesses 3H have been able to set up three new initiatives to support people with disabilities and their carers in the last ten years. 3H has previously welcomed Gloria Hunniford and Peter Sissons as patrons of the Charity and more recently gold winning paralympian, Dr Karen Darke, joined the charity as its new patron in July 2020. TeensPlus, formerly TeensOut, supports organisations who work with young people aged 13 – 25 with disabilities and young carers. The programme provides home based activities and funding for days out. The Carers’ Programme offers adult carers time for themselves during an organised spa day of pampering and rest at a magnificent hotel set in peaceful and stunning countryside. The programme also provides ‘pamper hampers’ and afternoon teas.
