Homemade playdough is one of the things I most enjoy creating. There is nothing more satisfying than making something so malleable, smooth & SO much fun! I follow the same recipe & method every time, adding different colours & different scents, & it never ceases to amaze me that every time it turns out slightly different. Sometimes glossy, sometimes a little sticky & sometimes absolutely perfect. It is a little reminder that we can always learn something, even from familiar actions. No matter how it turns out, playdough brings such joy to the children (& adults) who attend my messy play groups. Playdough is the most amazing resource to use with young children. All the ingredients in this recipe are taste safe, which means all young explorers can enjoy handling the dough. Playdough can become anything you want, so it is a ‘must’ for encouraging creativity & imaginative play. Plus, you can explore so much language; squish, roll, pat, pinch, push, stretch, flatten & mould to name just a few! Add a few shaping utensils & loose parts for extra inspiration & to stimuate chatter. Children love the freedom & the possibilities that playdough offers, as well as the knowledge that they can flatten it & begin again to make something entirely new. • • • • • • •

The Recipe:

2 cups plain flour 2 tbsp vegetable oil (coconut oil / baby oil work too) 1/2 cup salt 2 tablespoons cream of tartar (optional) 1 to 1.5 cups boiling water (add this slowly) gel food colouring (add with the water) at Christmas time, why not add a sprinkle of festive scent; peppermint, cinnamon or chocolate powder!

Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the water. Once it sticks together, add flour to your hands & work surface & knead, knead, knead! Make sure you keep your playdough in an air tight container in the fridge. Enjoy!

THOUGHT A PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION WAS FINANCIALLY OUT OF REACH? Have you ever thought of educating your child at a private school, but discounted the idea because of the cost? At Cumnor House Sussex, an independent school based in Danehill, two free places are available to children currently in Year 3 at a Sussex Primary School. The opportunity covers the entire cost of a child’s education at private school for ten years, from the age of 8 to 18, and includes extracurricular activities such as sport and music, as well as school uniform and school trips. To be eligible for a place, your child should be performing at the top of their class, and the places will be offered to children from families who could never afford to pay for an independent school education. Successful applicants join Cumnor House Sussex at the age of 8 (in Year 4) through to the age of 13 (Year 8) after which they move on to one of Cumnor’s 16 independent senior school partners, subject to meeting a school’s entry criteria, until the age of 18. There are currently eight Foundation Scholars at Cumnor. The first successfully moved on to Hurstpierpoint College in September 2021, with an Academic Scholarship. ender identity can be really hard to work out, at any

age, as people of all ages can experience not feeling that their assigned gender at birth (agab) is who they really are, and dealing with it as a teenager can be particularly difficult. As anyone who is a teenager, or remembers being one, knows, there are a lot of changes going on, and gender identity is something that comes up. Teens, like myself, can struggle with this, and sometimes all we need is some support. If someone who identifies as something that wasn’t their agab comes out to you, all you have to do is respect their chosen pronouns and name (if necessary) but really, just supporting them with anything that’s happening can ease some of the stress. You may feel scared or alarmed by the change at hand, but honestly, the trans teen community are scared too. To all the parents of trans teens, and cisgender teens too, showing them your unconditional love and making them feel reassured that they have someone to protect and help them through changes is all they need. So go tell your loved ones, whether they’re struggling with gender identity or not, that you’re there for them - it can help more than you think. :)
