Meet Gill: The Family Grapevine Group is now 20 years old! I am proud to say that I am one of the three original editors - I have been the editor of Mid Sussex for 17 years. I published my first edition of the Family Grapevine in the Mid Sussex area when my two lovely daughters were 8 and 10. Now, of course, they are all grown up and have flown the nest, but when they were little, we moved around a great deal due to my husband’s work, and I wish there had been a Family Grapevine every time we moved! Meet Nicola: “With a sales and marketing background in Reed Elsevier, I started working with Gill on The Mid Sussex Family Grapevine, when my daughter, who is just about to celebrate her 13th Birthday, started school. Time certainly has flown, my eldest has just gone to University, but when my children were younger I relied on my local Family Grapevine to find music and toddler groups, party venues or entertainers, swimming classes and places to go in the holidays, so I know what a valuable resource it is. I enjoy building up good working relationships with all my advertisers and am looking forward to working on the West Kent Family Grapevine”.

Les Puces
There are so many benefits to learning another language and with new reports springing up all the time, it’s a hard fact to ignore. From students scoring better results in all subjects - not just languages, earning more once they start working and even keeping certain illnesses at bay, right through to the practicalities of choosing to work in other countries or the simple pleasures of getting more from your holiday; knowledge of another language is a wonderful skill to have. It’s said that children of just a few months old, are able to differentiate between languages and stimulating this ability helps them to develop their cognitive functions - in visual sensitivity as well as the more expected auditory. “Les Puces” pre-school French classes are the brainchild of Mandie Davis, herself the mother of trilingual and bilingual daughters. Using the skills she discovered when teaching English to French children, she has recently launched the Les Puces groups across Kent and Sussex. “It’s wonderful to see how little ones are able to embrace another language without questioning or embarrassment! They love to sing and dance, make things and listen to stories - and if this is being done in a second language then that’s just an additional benefit!” It is important to Mandie that the parent or carer is involved in the learning process. “I find it fascinating that young children can experience the fact that grown ups have to learn too - and sometimes might even need a helping hand from the younger generation!” Reading the stories and listening to the music at home enforces that special bond.
