WELCOME TO THE FAMILY
Welcome to an early edition of our latest Directory! As the new Chair of Family Parks, I am really excited about where Family Parks is travelling and how our network of parks is expanding, especially as we are coming into our 30th year! With this in mind, I am pleased to announce our partnership with Sunshine Glamping Parks in China – hence our new Directory showcasing our new Chinese parks! Our intention is to grow our network of parks there considerably. Our Chinese parks are different – firstly the overnight price includes food! One less thing to think about. Also, most of their parks offer group activities which are included in the price. We are also hoping to provide a motorhome service for those wishing to travel on their own. Our website will give you more up to date information along with travel tips on how to get there and visa information. Moving back to Australia and New Zealand, our network of parks is growing – another reason for an early print run of our directory. Check out our new parks. These coming 12 months are going to be another busy period for Family Parks. Keep an eye out this summer for our promo comp with Australia Zoo. Our 2020 and sixth members rally will be held at Island View Beach, Narooma at the same time as the local Oyster festival. Check out channel 10 and tune into “What’s Up Downunder” to see Macca and the crew travel around the country filming our parks throughout the Summer and Autumn. Stay up to date with all of this, our competitions and more with our weekly newsletter (visit our website to sign up) and by following us on social media, including Facebook and Instagram! Interact with us to see more opportunities for winning prizes and see what hot deals our wonderful parks may have for you. We are also pleased to announce our long term partners - Truma and MyCoolman – check out their websites for all the latest accessories for your trip. Finally, we are continuing our support of the Leukaemia Foundation. Our aim is to raise $100,000 each year across Australia and New Zealand. We have a link on our website where you can donate directly to the Foundation, so please give generously, and keep an eye out for fundraising events as they occur across various Family Park locations.

FAMILY PARKS PET FRIENDLY POLICY Here at Family Parks, we understand that many of our travelling customers like to bring their pets with them. We encourage all of our Family Parks to have a policy that accepts your pet and we are delighted that the majority of our parks offer you that. In fact, Family Parks has the highest percentage of ‘pet-friendly’ destinations of any chain, at well over 75%! So what does this mean for you? Naturally, the park owner has some important responsibilities for the comfort, care and safety of all their customers, so you might find there are some obligations you are required to fulfill. As a guide, your pet would need to be de-sexed, registered, quiet, leashed and poop-scooped. Importantly, we ask that you take all measures to ensure the safe and responsible supervision of your pet at all times while on site. Please check on each park’s policy when making your booking.

TWO BEACH DRIVING HOTSPOTS TO TAKE YOUR CARAVAN WORDS BY: RACHEL DOHERTY
W
e’re really spoiled for choice in this country, aren’t we? Not only can we access our spectacular coastline for next to nothing but we can do it in caravanning comfort. And if you enjoy a challenge, you’ll find a few 4WD-friendly beaches to take your caravan on tow. Just be sure to watch the tides, take a second rig, good comms and some recovery gear and lower the tyres all round! Here are some of our favourite destinations.
BEACH DRIVING ROBE, SA
Less than an hour from Adelaide’s CBD you’ll find beach 4WDing on the white sands of Robe at low tide. Here, newbies will enjoy the sandy tracks
20 20
through the dunes with plenty of challenges closer to the shore. It’s a favourite among the 4WD fraternity with plenty more tracks nearby in the popular Little Dip Conservation Park.
4WD OCEAN BEACH AT MACQUARIE HEADS, TAS
What better way to experience Tasmania’s dramatic northern coast than to engage 4WD and punt sands? You’ll hit the shores of Ocean Beach just six kilometres from Strahan with access uninterrupted fishing to round out a day of beach driving. Just take care to avoid the quick sand near the mouth of Henty River.

THE MANY FACES OF BUNDABERG
WORDS BY: RACHEL DOHERTY
D
uring March, as dusk bids a final hurrah, turtle hatchlings scratch through white sand and coastal shrub for moonlit seas, just a 15-minute drive from Bundaberg’s CBD.
Here, browse rotated and touring collections within three exhibition spaces, including at the edgy contemporary Vault. One of two existing vaults used by the former resident bank.
Here, rangers at the Mon Repos Conservation Centre explain the plight of a significant loggerhead turtle population. Endangered turtles navigate the fertile Southern Great Barrier Reef waters to nest on Mon Repos Beach between November and January each year.
Other stunning architectures include the Bundaberg Post Office.
Whether on the land or in the sea, you’ll find evidence of nature’s bounty here, at white pristine beaches or amid rolling pastures within the Bundaberg just 350k north of Brisbane.
THRIVING BUNDABERG Bundaberg is a university town and home to a thriving arts community with many significant historical monuments. Two vibrant venues comprise the Bundaberg Regional Art Galleries, where local and international artists are celebrated. The main gallery, within Bundaberg’s CBD, served as the Customs House during early Federation and later, as a bank.
A GARDEN CITY Burnett River weaves through the sprawling parklands where you can kick back and watch birds skim its waters. Kids can stretch their legs on a playground within the adjacent Alexandra Park. Then kill 40 minutes wandering the remarkable urban Alexandra Park Zoo, established more than 100 years ago. North of town, wander through magnificent flora displays within the Bundaberg Botanic Garden. Within it you’ll find a tranquil Japanese Garden and lake. Then let the kids board the Australian Sugar Cane Railway as it weaves through the gardens, over bridges and more every Sunday.

THE MANY FACES OF BUNDABERG CONTINUED HINKLER HALL OF AVIATION
FOOD BOWL DISTRICT
Within the Botanic Gardens, you’ll find evidence of Australia’s early 20th Century’s fascination with flight at the Hinkler Hall of Aviation. Here, locals pay tribute to Bundaberg’s aviation hero, Bert Hinkler, who flew solo from England to Australia in 1928 and across the South Atlantic in 1931.
Dining is delectable in the Bundaberg Region. In fact, as Australia’s largest food bowl, it harvests a quarter of the nation’s yield.
Interpretative displays and life-size replicas are tastefully presented within the towering, architecturally-designed glass and steel museum.
TIPPLE TOURING In town, rich molasses runs thick at the Bundy Rum Distillery where distillers deploy traditional techniques for its signature sin. Here, sample the locally-bottled Master Distillers Collection, then join the makers on a tour. Bundy Rum’s local roots stem to 1889. Or, for a modern twist, kick off a lazy afternoon out at Kalki Moon Distillery, with a tour and tastings of a sweet pink gin and two chocolate liqueurs—with a clean vodka base. Master distiller Rick crafts gin and vodka to his own recipe and his own limited-release rum, ahead of a wide-spread launch in the coming year. Ohana Cider House and Tropical Winery is another spectacular top tipple within Bundaberg. And there’s plenty of breweries if ale’s more your thing. And if you’re short a driver, you can enjoy many of these sites worry-free with Bundy Food Tours.
Farmers’ markets, paddock-to-plate dining, and farmgate tastings strengthen the connection between travellers, the community and the rural sector. In terms of dining, Indulge Cafe is one of Bundaberg most celebrated. But if you miss a seat, you’ll find equally inspiring dishes at one of many other bustling restaurants and cafes within in town. Cha Cha Chocolate run by a chocolatier also comes highly recommended.
SOUTHERN GREAT BARRIER REEF AND BEACHES At Baraga, 13km east of Bundaberg, you’ll find rockpools to explore and shallows to snorkel. In fact, if you time you’re trip right, you may even spot turtles nesting at Kelly’s, Rifle Range and Nielson Park beaches. The Southern Great Barrier Reef is within an easy two-hour reach aboard the Lady Musgrave Experience. Snorkel or dive the reef then find inner peace wondering Lady Musgrave Island. Or, watch humpback whales migrate and explore the spectacular coral reef at Lady Elliot Island, a 25-minute flight from the Bundaberg airport.

DINING PORT LINCOLN
PORT LINCOLN’S BEACHES
Cray, tuna and whiting and Boston Bay muscles are just some of the local catch exported internationally and domestically. But you can sidestep the middle-man and Australia’s sample finest at the iconic trendy seafood capital of Port Lincoln.
Sheltering behind Boston Island and adjacent Baird Bay, Port Lincoln’s safety beaches belie dramatic Roaring Forties vistas. And from Winter Hill lookout, a five-minute drive from the CBD, you can take it in with views extending to Coffin Bay and Whalers Way.
Enjoy late-night dining Port Lincoln’s restaurant precinct. Then, check out the oyster farm just around the corner at the Coffin Bay.
There’s a beach for every occasion near Port Lincoln. Whether you’re snorkelling for treasures, chasing gentle rolling waves with little ones or hitting the surf. Set sail on the deep, sheltered waters nestled alongside Boston Island within Baird Bay or master the SUP a little north, on Tumby Bay.
42
HISTORIC PORT LINCOLN Sailors established Port Lincoln in the 1830s and you can celebrate their seafaring and boat building traditions at the Axel Stenross Museum. In fact, The Mill Cottage built in the 1860s for the son of a captain enjoys roots to European Settlement within the region. While stonemasonry from the same period testifies to the region’s pastoralist wealth. In fact, you can tour a privately-owned and lovingly restored Mikkira Station homestead, gardens and ruins of a shepherds hut.

ACCESSING MONEY ON THE ROAD
WORDS BY: RACHEL DOHERTY
P
aying your way electronically is easy when you’re travelling in a caravan. But where populations are sparse and telecommunications limited, cases of cash or no sale exist. And given the distances we travel, you won’t always find another vendor down the road. Thankfully, a few
simple back-up plans will keep you financial on the go.
48
ALWAYS CARRY EMERGENCY CASH
MANAGING MONEY BETWEEN FRIENDS
There are great incentives for businesses to transact electronically but where the telecommunications infrastructure is patchy, it’s not guaranteed. Carrying a few hundred dollars in emergency cash can save the day whether you’re venturing off the beaten track deliberately or when plans simply go astray.
Splitting bills between co-travellers or purchasing services from an irregular seller? Consider a thirdparty payment service. Services like Osko are easy to use and are usually offered in conjunction with your own financial institution. PayPal offers instant transactions to frequent users but may hold onto funds for a few weeks so take care.
PREPARING FOR EVENTS
BOOSTING YOUR SERVICES
At events and farmers’ markets hosted outside of mobile range, cash is king. Don’t get wrong, event organisers do their best to provide communal ATM facilities but they can fail on the ground—so it’s best to cash up before you go. Some hosts will actually offer to bus you into town to ATM facilities but why dog-house it on the Greyhound if can you plan ahead?
Improving your existing internet infrastructure helps you to manage finances on the road. Telstra customers can opt for ‘Blue Tick’ mobile handset, tested under trying conditions to deliver the best possible coverage in rural regions. Consider a mobile phone and broadband bolt-on antenna kit for your rig.
COINS FOR CAMPS Accessing change for coin-operated laundries is easy at the local caravan park. But you’ll probably need to bring your own to use coinoperated showering facilities within droughtprone areas—particularly within an unmanned campground. What’s more, coins let you support the upkeep of community-run services for the next time you return. AUSTRALIA’S ATM NETWORK More than 330,000 fixed ATMs exist in Australia with a third owned by the four major banks. And this is great news if you’re spending from your savings account. Extracting money from a credit card via an ATM attracts high interest and tremendous fees. Therefore, weigh up the alternatives if you’re racking up loyalty points or planning to travel on credit.
PHONE BANKING If access to your mobile phone service is limited, remember, transferring funds is still plausible via phone banking where land-lines exist. And if you’re planning to phone bank outside mobile coverage, locate one 16,000 Telstra Pay Phones here. Telstra plans to offer Wi-Fi and USB station at some sites. Business owners truly stuck may prefer to bank via a sat-phone. SENSITIVE MAIL AT HOME Most institutions offer sophisticated online services in lieu of paper bills and statements on request. Mail redirection services can capture any remaining financially-sensitive mail. A professional mail forwarding service will happily post out your paper mail to wherever you’re travelling although many travellers prefer to redirect their mail to a trusted friend.
OVER-THE-COUNTER BANKING OPTIONS Sadly, you cannot out travel bills. Where paying online isn’t feasible over-the-counter services do help. If there’s no participating bank nearby, try Bank@Post at more than 3,500 Post Offices nationwide (including 1,800 rural and remote regions). Services include over-the-counter withdrawal, deposit and balance enquiries on accounts compatible with more than 60 participating financial institutions.

NORTH ISLAND
MAGIC I
n 2015 the crew from What’s Up Downunder visited the beautiful town of Bowentown on New Zealand’s north island. Located right on the beach the cast and crew made Bowentown Beach Holiday Park their home for a few days while they explored the region. There was so much to see and do in the area and the Holiday Park is perfectly placed at the end of the peninsula on the shores of the 8-kilometre beach.
COMING FROM THE NORTH
THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA
Just the names of the towns evoke a feeling of being in touch with the New Zealand culture.
The Karangahake Gorge is the sight of the original gold rush in 1875. Today it is an oasis of activities for outdoor purists. There is hiking, bike riding, fishing and kayaking just to name a few activities.
If you’re coming from the north of the island, follow State Highway 2 through Ngatea and Paeroa until you reach Waihi Township. Waihi Beach is located 11km east of Waihi. Go through Waihi Township and drive for approximately five minutes before turning left into Waihi Beach Road. Follow this road as it leads into Wilson Road which becomes Seaforth Road. You will find Bowentown Beach Holiday Park at the end on the left-hand side. COMING FROM THE SOUTH Getting to Bowenbeach from the south is just as easy. follow State Highway 2 through Katikati and drive for approximately 15 minutes. Turn right into Athenree Road then veer left into Steele Road. This leads into Emerton Road. Follow this road to the end. At the roundabout, turn right into Seaforth Road. Follow this road as it leads you to Bowentown Domain and Bowentown Beach Holiday Park. Please click here for more information on your Waihi Beach Accommodation options at Bowentown Beach Holiday Park.
7272
Located just 31 kilometres from Bowentown this is a great day out. If you like playing golf, you have quite a few opportunities to do so in the area. Take a short drive to Waihi, where you will find the 18-hole Waihi Golf Club, established in 1906. A little further away but well worth the drive is Golf Pacifica near Katikati. Set on 75 hectares of rich, gently sloping land, this 18-hole professional course and clubhouse were designed with Scotland in mind. There is also a mini-golf course at Waihi Beach. Located at the northern end of the Waihi Beach shops on Wilson Road. Great fun for the whole family. And then, of course, there is the fishing. The bays and inlets hugging the estuary shores around Bowentown Headland offer many great family spots to do just that.
Bay of Plenty, Graeme Murray
There is a jetty at Anzac Bay, rocks around the headland, surf-casting from the main beach and Cave Bay and the boat ramp at the Bowentown Boat and Fishing Club provides great access to the inner harbour. There are two Boat ramps in the area. A public ramp at Anzac bay or one which public can use for a small fee at the Bowentown Boating and Sports fishing club. This ramp has floating pontoons and concrete ramps. So you can bring your surf caster and fish off the beach or the rocks. Or bring the boat and explore the southern end of the Tauranga harbour. Alternately venture out across the bar (make sure you make enquires about the weather conditions first - Coast guard is situated right by the entrance to the Bowentown Beach Holiday Park) and you can travel to Mayor Island for a day or nights fishing if you wish. Great fishing all around. With this much water around, practically anyone would be tempted to pick up a rod and try to catch a few fish!

DISCOVER THE
BEST OF BRITISH
S
tart your touring season off right with a great British break - there’s plenty here to visit and touring is the perfect past time to make the most of what we’ve got in the UK.
We’ve compiled a list of places responsible for some of the most iconic British foods, so you can eat your way around the UK!
Cornish Pasties, Cornwall
Did you know: The well-known British rhyme “Oggie Oggie Oggie” stems from the old Cornish slang for pasty ‘hoggan’ – “Oggie Oggie Oggie” would be shouted down a mine shaft and when the miners were ready to eat, they would reply “Oi Oi Oi”.
A 84
much loved snack of the South West and nationwide, the origin of what we know to be a Cornish pasty is debatable. Whilst we originally know the Cornish pasty to be an old mining meal of Cornish descent, evidence suggests the pasty recipe was being
used in Plymouth, Devon over 200 years prior… According to the Cornish Pasty Association, you can buy a genuine Cornish pasty at Chough Bakery in Padstow (among other places) – I’ll let you decide for yourself.
Cheddar cheese, Somerset
Did you know: Cheddar cheese accounts for over half of the UK’s annual cheese consumption.
V
isit the birthplace of one of the world’s most popular cheeses – Cheddar in Somerset. Cheddar cheese has been produced in this little town for over 900 years,
using the caves in the Cheddar Gorge to age the cheese to perfection.
Garlic, Isle of Wight
Did you know: The Isle of Wight is the biggest garlic producer in the UK, shipping nationwide and even shipping to France!
W
e know what you’re thinking – garlic, from the Isle of Wight? The Garlic Farm’s renowned shop and farm in Newchurch would prove you wrong, with over 50 acres of garlic farmland and
150 tons of garlic produced per year. Visit the Garlic Farm restaurant, where you can try an array of pickles and chutneys, plus a full menu of locally sourced meals – garlic-lovers will not be disappointed.
85
Sandwiches, Kent Did you know: Although the Earl was attributed to the invention of the sandwich in 1762, the Greeks and Turks have been putting filling inside their pitta bread for much longer!
S
andwiches are a staple of any British packed lunch, but they never used to be so accessible. During a 24-hour gambling streak, the 4th Earl of Sandwich instructed his cook to prepare his food in a way that wouldn’t interfere with his game. The cook handed
him sliced meat between two slices of toast, and thus, the humble sandwich was born! Sandwiches then remained the entertaining food of the upper class until as late as the nineteenth century.
Worcestershire sauce, Worcester
Did you know: Worcestershire sauce is primarily made from anchovies fermented in vinegar!
86
M
aybe Worcester’s most famous product, Worcestershire sauce was first produced by chemists John Wheeley Lea and William Perrins in 1837.
Although the ingredients are listed, the exact recipe is a closely guarded secret. Why not grab a bottle and add a little spice to your barbecue!
Kendal Mint Cake, Lake District Did you know: Kendal Mint Cake was first produced by accident, when a batch of glacier mints ‘went wrong’.
K
endal Mint Cake is popular among climbers as a source of energy and was even eaten as an energy bar on a trans-Antarctic expedition in 1914. This sweet
confectionary is still manufactured in the Lake District town of Kendal – make sure to pick up a bar before you go exploring in the surrounding national parks!
Bakewell Pudding, Bakewell
Did you know: In the town of Bakewell, this dish is called a Bakewell Pudding and looks more like a soft pie than the tart most of us have becoming accustomed to!
T
he first recorded recipe for the Bakewell tart (or Bakewell pudding) dates back to 1836. Not to be confused with a Cherry Bakewell, you can try an authentic recipe at
the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop – they even offer Bakewell Pudding making experience.
