Safe & Welcoming Environment

We work together "to empower our students to be a force for positive change in our global society". We also work hard to achieve a positive and welcoming school by attending to students' social and emotional needs. We are currently working on developing more culturally responsive practices. Academically, we are intent on improving in all areas with an emphasis on increasing math growth. We are continuing to help all students forge stronger language skills.

The Oregon Department of Education is partnering with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% ontime, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, provide a well-rounded education, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

We make sure that all students and parents feel welcome. We have an open door policy for families to share celebrations, concerns, and offer input. We have many bilingual staff. It is our goal to translate school information into multiple languages. Interpreters are provided for parent conferences and all important school meetings. We send home a monthly newsletter and a weekly, phone message/email in multiple languages. Parents are always welcome at our Site Council meetings. We look forward to serving our families.

About Our School BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We consistently practice emergency drills such as fire, earthquake and lock-ins. We have a Safety Committee that looks into safety issues regularly and devises solutions to address concerns. We teach a bully prevention program called Stop-WalkTalk. All students learn how to use this protocol and all staff support students in implementing it. The protocol empowers our students to stand-up and speak-up when they see bullying. We work together with students and families to address conflict between students. We have specialists that develop plans to make sure our students are safe at all times.

Gilbert Heights is a SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) School, which offers three after school program sessions per year and one summer session per year to students and families. Some examples of the extracurricular activities through SUN are:

Gilbert Heights actively engages families in variety of ways including home visits, personal phone calls, parent conferences, classroom events, and school events. We have a strong parent group that works collaboratively with our school's Family Engagement Team to sponsor and support a variety of activities, including: Back to School Night, Movie Night, Bingo Night, Gym Night, Math Night, Multicultural Night, Lights of Winter, Stories and Strudels, and OMSI Science Night. Our goal is to listen to all voices and consider all viewpoints as we interact with diverse families and parents.

We have several ongoing partnerships. SMART Readers provide individualized read-aloud experiences for our students. Zenger Farms delivers an outdoor education curriculum to our fifth graders. After school, we partner with Saturday Academy, Girls Inc., and Girls On The Run. Our school also hosts a Boy Scout Troop and a Girl Scout Troop. We are the meeting place for the Friends of Gates Park. We partner with the Oregon Symphony and Oregon Community Foundation to host a Music Matters Night and to sponsor private orchestra lessons for selected students.

State Goals

Safe & Welcoming Environment

The school's leadership provides professional development to teachers to support parents in the education of their children by providing in-classroom opportunities and at-home opportunities for parents.

We always strive to make parents feel like an important part of our school community. We are fortunate to have multiple bilingual staff who can help interpret for school staff and parents. We have interpreters for conferences in at least 7 languages.

Professional development activities for all staff (principals, teachers, and paraprofessionals) are aligned to ensure continued growth in content knowledge as well as in effective instructional delivery. School staff involves parents and students in setting student goals and preparing the student for post-secondary education and careers.

About Our School BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Our most effective safety actions are the relationships that staff strives to build with each student. · Monthly fire drills · Twice-yearly earthquake drills · Twice-yearly lock out drills · County wide threat assessment protocol · Bullying curriculum in advisory classes · Abuse curriculum in health classes

Students are lucky to have many opportunities across many different interest areas in which to participate. · SUN Schools offers sports, performing arts, computer, academic, and many other types of clubs. They are all free to students. · All grades can join teams in volleyball, football, basketball, wrestling, and track and field.

Every year we encourage parents to be a part of their child’s education. We have several events tailored to this goal. · At Back to School Night, we invite all parents to attend with their child and follow the child’s schedule so they can meet each teacher. · At least three times a year we invite students and their families to come to school, and we provide dinner, along with activities such as BINGO, basketball, and volleyball. · At least twice a year we have a morning event, families to come who have busy evenings. · PTO meetings occur about once a month.

We have surprisingly few businesses in our school boundaries. We have connected with a couple of nursing homes. Our performing arts groups have visited various nursing homes near our school. We are exploring having some other elective classes partner with a new senior living center, where students could complete projects with adults living there.

About Our School ADVANCED COURSEWORK

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We offer 11 AP courses and approximately 19 college level courses.

We offer 10 career pathway programs.

Grow our after school enrichment offerings using our newly won 21st Century grant. We currently offer 20 clubs, but will seek to add more where we find student need.

· We offer back to school night, conferences, homecoming, career fairs, and college nights. · We currently house the largest food bank in Oregon. We are adding a community garden, which we hope will involve more of our community while contributing more fresh food to our community. · We are partnering with several agencies through our 21st Century grant. We hope to continue to grow.
