School Goals

State Goals

Safe & Welcoming Environment

Our primary goal is the achievement and growth of every student. We are committed to engaging students in their learning by teaching to rigorous standards and fostering critical thinking. Program efforts in 2018-19 included the sixth year of implementation of our Dual Language program, academic language development in Writing and Math, and a focus on developing a positive school climate and culture. Staff implemented Trauma-Responsive strategies and we developed a wellness room to teach students selfregulation skills.

The Oregon Department of Education is partnering with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% ontime, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, provide a well-rounded education, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive space for everyone, regardless of their race, color, religion, immigration status, or gender. We believe students learn best when they feel safe and valued; and that a positive, proactive approach fosters a productive learning environment. Staff are trained in a variety of positive behavior supports and Restorative Justice practices. We explicitly teach students expected behaviors and have reinforcement systems in place to recognize students who do well.

About Our School BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The safety of our students and staff is a priority. To that end, we have a variety of routines, systems and supports in place to keep our school as safe as possible. To learn more, please visit www.hsd.k12.or.us/keepingstudentssafe. Ensuring safety also means that positive, respectful, and responsible behavior is expected at all times. Our school has implemented the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit to help students know how to recognize, report, and refuse bullying.

We were able to offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities during the 2018-19 school year, including: Running Club, Coding, 3D Printing, Battle of the Books, Beginning Band, Nature Detectives, Girls' Coding, Chicks & Ducks, Gaming Club, and Garden Club. These after-school activities were typically 3-8 weeks in duration to allow many students to participate. We also coordinated a webbased after-school tutoring program for students who needed additional academic support in Math.

We engage our parents and community by hosting a variety of events intended for their attendance, including "Stop-Drop-andSmile," Family Resource Night, Math and Pizza, Science Fair, and our Multicultural Fair and Celebration of Learning. Our school also has two active parent organizations - PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) and PAC (Parent Advisory Committee). In addition to fun events, these parent-run organizations coordinate our food backpack program, provide supervision during dismissal, and secure funding for classroom projects.

Free Orchards' PTO and PAC parent groups are active in our community and work hard to support our school and families. We also partner with a variety of community organizations to provide opportunities for our students and families, including: Hillsboro Parks and Recreation BLAST after-school program; Adelante Mujeres - Free Orchards PreSchool and "Adelante Chicas" program for girls; SMART - Start Making a Reader Today literacy program; Cornelius Public Library; and the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

We recognize the diversity and worth of all students, individuals and groups, and are committed to both educating and providing a safe and inclusive space for everyone, regardless of their race, color, religion, immigration status, or any other basis. We believe that students learn best when they feel safe and valued. Our staff is skilled, caring, and dedicated to fostering each student’s academic and personal growth in a supportive and welcoming environment.

About Our School BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Our number one priority and goal is to ensure students are safe. To that end, we have a network of adults, systems, structures, protocols, and other supports we leverage to keep our school as safe as possible. To learn more, please visit www.hsd.k12.or.us/keepingstudentssafe. Ensuring safety also means that positive, respectful, and responsible behavior is expected at all times. We do not tolerate bullying or harassment. To learn more about the District’s definition and response to bullying and/or harassment, please see Board Policies JFCF and JFCF-AR: Hazing, Harassment and Bullying, as well as the Standards of Student Conduct.

Evergreen offers a number of extracurricular activities, including both academic and athletic opportunities: Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Wrestling, Track and Field, Chicas, FCS, Chess Club, Speech and Debate, Robotics, Dance Team, Jazz Band, Mariachi, Homework Club, Migrant Support Club, STEM Club, Leadership, Yearbook, and Equity Club.

Evergreen holds several evening events for parents, beginning with our annual Back-toSchool Night in the early fall. Parent Conferences, Spanish Speaking Family Nights, 6th grade Parent Night, 8th Grade Promotion, and many other band, choir, and drama performance events all play a major role in our parent engagement. In addition, a newsletter goes out at the beginning of each week to keep parents informed about what's happening at our school. On the first Friday of each month, Evergreen's Parent Club holds a meeting at the school where the principal and other key stakeholders attend and present on various topics relating to the school and our students.

Evergreen partners with local businesses and organizations such as Intel, Nike, Dick's MacKenzie Ford, and others to provide our students with real world experiences in several career and technical fields. Experiences range from hosting guest speakers to students spending valuable time on-site learning about careers firsthand. In addition, many volunteers help out at Evergreen both daily and weekly in classrooms and throughout our school. In addition, we film a weekly broadcast, hosted by our SRO and counselor, which is shared with the entire Evergreen and Hillsboro community on topics related to mental health and other relevant issues facing young teens.

School Goals

State Goals

Safe & Welcoming Environment

During the 2018-19 school year, we worked on increasing our collaborative culture at GHS. We continue to work one the "what?" and "why?" of our lessons by posting Learning Targets, Essential Questions and Language Targets. The use of language scaffolds is also essential so all students can access the content. At Glencoe High School we place a strong emphasis on Language and Rigor to improve academic discourse between students and enhance differentiation in the classroom.

At Glencoe High School we value both classroom climate and culture as well as the safety of all students and staff. This year, we look forward to even more effective upgrades in safety as renovations from the bond begin. Our many different clubs provide students with opportunities to develop relationships and a sense of belonging. We work hard to include all parents in our PTO and PAC groups. We have bilingual staff who answer phones and are able to support all of our families.

About Our School ADVANCED COURSEWORK

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

GHS offers a number of Advanced Placement courses and dual-credit courses aligned to various colleges and universities. AP courses include: AP Studio Art, AP Language, AP Literature and Composition, AP Environmental Science, AP Biology, AP Human Geography, AP Government, AP Psychology, AP US History, AP European History, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC. We are also happy to be able to add AP Music Theater and AP Spanish Language. Thirty-three percent of GHS students will be enrolled in at least one AP course during the 2019-20 school year. Our dual-credit courses are Tech Theater, AP Calculus BC, and Economics.

GHS has a strong and extensive CTE program and continues to build opportunities for students in the areas of the Arts/Information/Communications (Fine Arts, Graphic Arts, Music, and Theater), Business Management (Business and Marketing), Health Sciences, Early Childhood Education, Engineering, Manufacturing and Design, and a newly added pathway of Construction. The 201819 school year was the first in which every senior participated in a career and college pathway program as part of their graduation plan.

Glencoe High School has a strong tradition in athletics, clubs, and the arts. We offer 19 sanctioned OSAA sports. We also offer clubs such as lacrosse, bowling, and equestrian. More than sixty percent of our student population participates in extracurricular clubs and sports. We also partner closely with the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce to provide opportunities for students to job shadow and volunteer throughout Washington County.

Our work during the 2018-19 school year was around developing opportunities for parents to be involved. Many different activities took place such as FAFSA and ORSA evenings both in English and Spanish, and a monthly Principal Chat was established with great success. We send weekly calendars and newsletters with information on upcoming events in which parents and community members can participate. Our band and athletic booster clubs are highly successful. We will continue to find ways for all of our parents to be involved in our school.
