School Goals

State Goals

Safe & Welcoming Environment

Title schools are required to submit a CAP & use it to document improvement efforts. CAP is a continuous improvement-planning tool. Laurel is no longer a Focus School; the CAP continues to drive the improvement process. Progress & amendments to the CAP are made through ongoing review of data, reflection, & input from staff 3 times a year. We will continue our efforts in these priority areas: Strengthening Math/ELA Curriculum; Monitoring Student Progress/Informing Instruction; School Agreements/Culture; Family Involvement.

The Oregon Department of Education is working in partnership with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% on-time, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

We want all to feel welcome/invested in a partnership with us to achieve great outcomes. We maintain welcoming environment & connections between school/community to support student learning; provide ways to involve all in decision-making process. We invite parents to participate in Round Table-committee that serves as “think tank to help us create/maintain a positive environment, & invite parents to participate in feedback gathering through surveys/input, on issues important to improved family involvement.

About Our School BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We teach behavior expectations from school-wide matrix- details desired behaviors in 3 school expectationspracticed all year. We have 3 referral levels, based on the intensity/intent. Level 1- issued by any certified staff. Level 2/3issued by member of Student Management Team. When a student makes a choice contradictory to the matrix, an Uh-oh Time to Grow, or office referral is issuedstaff follows school discipline plan/policy to follow through on behavior. We take bullying, intimidation, & harassment very seriously. When these behaviors are reported, an immediate investigation is opened, & Board policies followed to take immediate action.

· School and District music performances · High level of participation in outside athletics · Annual Missoula Children’s Theater · Leadership Programs: Leopard News Crew, Breakfast Club · Social-Emotional / Counseling Group Support · Butterfly Girls Group · Monthly thematic Family Fun Nights · Several after school events hosted by the Laurel Parent Group

Staff ensures families have opportunity for meaningful involvement at Laurel. We invite parents to participate in activities/projects aimed at involving families in the way that suits their family’s needs & busy/work life. We invite parents to attend “Coffee With the Principal”. This will provide parents an opportunity to get to know our staff, ask questions, or give ideas about how we can work together to make our school the best place for students. We have the following monthly evening events that involve parent volunteers as well as a high rate of family participation: Back-toSchool; Lego; Dr. Seuss; Math/Science; Carnival; Jog-a-Thon.

We partner with the following local organization to provide students with learning opportunities in connection with our community: Education Together; Soroptimist International of Junction City; Lions Club; Scholastics Book Fair; Project Hope; Ophelia’s Place; Local businesses/Chamber of Commerce; Local Aid; University of Oregon. These organizations partner with our school in many different ways such as grant awards, book giveaways, facility enhancements, social emotional support, donations, & direct family support. We are grateful to be in such a supportive community, & we hope to continue to strengthen our partnership to support our students.

State Goals

Safe & Welcoming Environment

Regular attendance is a major indicator of future graduation rates; therefore, we strive to promote student success by working with parents and students to promote regular attendance. We work as a team to identify students who need extra support and encouragement in attending school. Communication with parents is timely and from a problem solving approach. Because of the work our team puts in, our attendance rates have been improving each year.

The Oregon Department of Education is partnering with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% ontime, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, provide a well-rounded education, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

Oaklea is an accessible building where students, parents, and community members are welcomed and encouraged to visit or volunteer. We have access to bilingual staff and take steps to ensure communications with parents, guardians, and community members are translated for equal access. Interpreters are provided for conferences and meetings that parents or guardians might attend. We actively seek feedback from students, parents, and guardians for ways we can improve.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Student safety is our number one priority. Our team of students, counselor, staff, district safety officer, parents and administration works together to create a safe environment for students that is consistent with our building policies regarding bullying/harassment. Conflict resolution and counseling for harassment situations is always available as well as training for both students and staff each year. We are also part of the SafeOregon system allowing students and parents to notify us of threats or dangerous situations. We have safety plans and protocols for emergency situations that require evacuation as well as a reunification process.

Our school offers several extracurricular activities: · Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)

Our school strives to engage all of our parents by providing language supports for those parents for whom English is their second language. We hold a yearly Open House, as well as a number of Family Fun Nights focused on literacy and math. We have a strong parent group and opportunities to volunteer during the school day; field trips and after school events are numerous. If you are interested in getting involved, visit our website or feel free to call our school for more information.

We work with our district staff and community partners to create opportunities for students, parents, and community members to come to our building through: · College Fair

Safe & Welcoming Environment

We are working together to create a common, shared vision to provide the best learning environment for all of our students. Focusing on increased student attendance and engagement, exploring barriers that hinder a student’s ability to be connected at school. We are striving to maximize the number of 9th graders earning 6 or more credits. We have implemented a Bridge Program to support students' transition to high school, and a 9th Grade Success class to support this process. Our staff continues to focus on improving our 4-year grad rate, with focus placed on improving success for students from underserved groups.

Our staff is dedicated to creating a learning environment free of discrimination, bullying, & harassment. We strive to connect all of our students to extracurriculars & by building relationships with trusted adult mentors. TEAM teachers meet with students weekly, providing academic and social-emotional support. Our District Safety Officer provides additional security. We use SafeOregon as a tool for students to share tips and concerns. We have 2 counselors who are active in supporting students, and ensure our kids feel welcome, safe, & supported. Our Bilingual Resource Coordinator serves students & families in providing guidance.
