The market remains in a relative stasis in terms of sales to inventory. Prices have not been moving higher for several weeks. However, inventory is sufficiently low to keep us in the Seller’s Market zone so watch changes in the MAI. If the market heats up persistently, prices are likely to resume an upward climb.

Safe & Welcoming Environment

Garfield is committed to knowing the academic strengths and needs of each student, and using this knowledge to guide the instructional program for each child. We are also committed to authentic engagement in both native and non-dominant language instruction regardless of race, language proficiency, or school readiness. Beginning in Kindergarten, students are in a learning environment that is 70% Spanish. By 3rd grade, this shifts to 50%. Garfield staff are dedicated to equity based intervention services in order to achieve the district targets of Closing the Opportunity Gap, Growth for All, and Every Child a Graduate.

The Oregon Department of Education is partnering with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% ontime, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, provide a well-rounded education, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

PBIS is a program designed to teach respect, responsibility, and safety at our school. We encourage students to make positive behavior choices by implementing this program. Through instruction and regular practice, all staff implement a consistent set of behavior expectations and rules. When students respond in unexpected ways, we view it as an opportunity for reteaching, not punishment.

State Goals

Safe & Welcoming Environment

Linus Pauling takes a multi-faceted approach to school improvement. We focus on 6th graders that are still working toward grade level performance. Providing smaller classes in 6th grade in both math and language arts helps teachers to best serve our students, and we are already seeing positive outcomes for these students. Ongoing integration of AVID strategies in our classrooms as well as AVID training for our teachers supports academic growth in our students.

We have solidified our behavior systems and received further training in Collaborative Problem Solving. The frequent teaching of appropriate student behaviors has been intentional and we have incorporated more recognition of positive behavior. We have seen a decrease in the number of referrals and will continue to strengthen our systems and knowledge of students. We provide all parent communications in both Spanish and English. Please note: This new school report card format did not include all of our counselors in the correct staff category.

About Our School BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We frequently review safety and behavioral expectations and procedures with students through a weekly PRIDE class, offered on Mondays and Fridays. School expectations, character development and anti bullying information is shared with students. Reports of bullying and harassment are given to our Dean of Students who works with students and parents to thoroughly investigate the reports and find solutions to conflicts.

Cross country and track are the two sports available to students through our school. There is high participation in both sports and each year more and more students participate.

Our Parent Teacher organization helps us to recruit 50-75 volunteers a year to work in our main office, provide meals for staff, help with the many activities at LPMS and support our 8th grade celebration.

Student-generated lunch clubs are always popular with students. These clubs allow students to choose a subject that they are passionate about and share this passion with other students during lunch.

We have provided parenting classes and informational sessions for parents in both Spanish and English. JUNTOS is another parent activity for Spanish speaking parents that we provide.

4-H cooking classes and after school robotics are some other activities that have been available at Linus Pauling.

Chat with the Principals is an additional way for parents to get information about Linus Pauling.

We are fortunate to have many community partners that enhance and enrich our programs at LPMS. Oregon State University has helped us secure a grant that will allow us to offer computational thinking classes through games to our 6th and 7th graders in the 2020-21 school year. Additionally, the 4-H program, Linus Pauling Institute, and other personnel from OSU provide support to students during the school day as well as after school. Our advanced art program partners with one of our local adult care facility to provide wonderful experiences for our students and the adults they serve.

State Goals

Safe & Welcoming Environment

Goal #1: All student groups will exceed 90% in terms of 9th grade on-track, including credits in Algebra 1 and language arts. Goal #2: The graduation rate for students navigating poverty, Hispanic students, and students with disabilities will exceed 90%. Our Health 1 and Spartan Success class for all 9th graders as well as targeted intervention classes and co-taught Language Arts and Algebra 1 classes address goal number one. Summer School, AVID, CHS Prep classes, after-school tutoring, co-taught English 12, and required Senior Seminar support goal two.

· Peace Literacy as a School Focus · Bilingual Family Advocates · Comprehensive Counseling Center, including on-site therapy · School Resource officer · Three Behavior Support Specialists and a Dean of Students · Standard Safety Response Protocol · Required Frosh Success and Wellness class (year-long)
