Safe & Welcoming Environment
Our focus is on improving our literacy and math skills through a data centered approach that ensures every student is getting instruction at their level, grade level, and opportunities for extension of concepts through integration of STEAM in each subject area. We strive to provide engaging instruction for every student with the supports to allow each student to meet their academic potential. We pride ourselves on getting to know our students and families and encourage you to contact us with any questions, concerns, or ideas around how we can collaborate on this work.
The Oregon Department of Education is partnering with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% ontime, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, provide a well-rounded education, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.
We work hard to make our school a place where all students and families feel welcome and included. We celebrate our community’s diversity and we honor this diversity in our learning activities. We understand how important it is to keep our students feeling safe, both physically and emotionally, when they are with us.

About Our School BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
PARENT ENGAGEMENT
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Portland Public Schools has created policies to help our schools provide safe environments for every student. This includes teaching students and staff about bullying and harassment, and providing methods to report and respond to any of these incidents. We have a PPS threat assessment team to help address reports of safety concerns. We also support the district-wide implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and Restorative Justice practices through our Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) department.
Our school offers a variety of extracurricular activities for students during the school day and after school. During the day we have opportunities for students to participate in student council, safety patrol, Playworks Junior Coach Program, and Big Brother/Big Sister Programs, etc. After school, there are several opportunities available through our SUN program, these change quarterly and contacting our SUN coordinator is the best way to stay up to date, but frequently include; team sports, chess, STEAM projects, music, dance, drama, etc.
Our school offers a variety of opportunities for families to stay connected and get the information necessary to support the academic growth of our students. We host many academic themed nights throughout the year including; back to school night, STEAM nights, math night, and literacy night. These are all focused on sharing academic strategies and approaches we are utilizing with your children. In addition, there are many family social opportunities throughout the school year that we collaborate with PTA to host that offer opportunities to strengthen our community. All of our evening events are planned for Thursday nights. The school calendar is a good reference for when these will be held.
We feel privileged to have a strong and supportive community around us here at BEH. We have several businesses, churches, and other community neighbors that have supported us and continue to support us in the work that we are doing with our students each year. As a STEAM school, we are always looking to expand and grow further partnerships. If you are interested in providing support or collaborating with us in our work moving forward, please contact us at the school. We would love to expand our reach and further connect our students to the many individuals and organizations that make up our Portland community.
