At Prairie Mountain, we focus on a school-wide positive approach to student behavior while having high expectations for all of our students. We place a strong emphasis on attendance and work with families on strategies that they can utilize to help their students attend school each day. We are committed to providing quality instruction in a welcoming environment for all, with a focus of equity and culturally proficient practices. We support student achievement in reading for all students by providing small group reading instruction at grades K-5, and by offering strategic individualized support for students.

The Oregon Department of Education is partnering with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% ontime, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, provide a well-rounded education, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

Our number one goal at Prairie Mountain is to provide a safe and welcoming environment where all students can learn. Each staff member makes it a priority to build strong relationships with their students and families. We teach socio-emotional skills and relationship skills by using the Second Step and Welcoming Schools programs. Our office staff participate in yearly training that focuses on creating welcoming schools and positive customer service.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

Safety from physical and emotional harm is a primary commitment at Prairie Mountain. We hold annual ALICE safety drills and training for all staff, and students participate in at least two Lockdown drills each year. Students and staff prepare for emergencies such as earthquakes and fires with planned drills. All students have a basic right to feel safe at school. We do not tolerate bullying and harassment. Students are taught the definition of bullying and harassment, and what steps they can take if they are witnessing or experiencing bullying or harassment. Prairie Mountain follows School Board Policies regarding responses to bullying/harassment incidents.

Prairie Mountain is proud of the widevariety of extracurricular activities that it can offer to students: Jazz Band Track Digital Arts and Media Culinary Classes Robotics Coding (4th and 5th grades) After School Club (ELD students) Eagle Studies Homework Help (grades 6-8) Oregon Battle of the Books Safe Routes to School Program Kids in Transition to School (KITS)

Engaging families to be a part of the fabric of our school is a pillar of Prairie Mountain’s mission. We encourage families to join our Parent and Teacher Organization, which meets monthly and conducts fundraisers, supports student efforts, and purchases needed supplies and enrichment materials for our students. We welcome and encourage parent voice and input and look for opportunities for our parents to get involved in all facets of our school. Parents receive communication from staff and administration in multiple ways: school blog, Remind, email, mail, and phone calls.

Willamette’s mission statement is: To inspire all students academically and prepare them for success as high school graduates and career professionals who will continue their education as life-long learners. To achieve this mission, we emphasize the importance of multi-tiered systems of support, which include specific support around 9th grade on track, attendance and behavior, school climate and culture, and relevant and rigorous instruction. We support all our students by being engaged in our community, both in the classroom and in schoolsponsored activities such as music programs, drama, athletics, AVID, and a variety of clubs.

We advertise the SafeOregon Tip Line as an anonymous reporting system. We provide annual community trainings around the topics of teen cybersafety, teen suicide prevention, encouraging healthy relationships, and we have a drug and alcohol counselor on-site.

Willamette is a local leader in providing advanced coursework, much of it for college credit, including Physics, AP Human Geography, IB Sports, Exercise, and Health Science, IB Chemistry, IB Calculus and Precalculus, IB English, IB Global Politics, IB History, IB Psychology, IB Spanish, IB German, IB Theory of Knowledge, and IB Theatre, Writing, Computer Science, and Math.
