COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Tips for Success in General Chemistry General chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it can undergo. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space and is composed of various combinations of basic elements. This course involves the study of many chemical elements and reactions when they are combined. Understanding the basic properties of matter and learning how to predict and explain how they change when they react to form new substances is very important in chemistry. The following tips are provided to help enhance your understanding of the course material and to assist you in successfully completing the course. In Chemistry, fundamental concepts are static, therefore retention of knowledge gained in lower level classes (e.g CHM 1025) definitely helps to be successful in upper level classes (e.g. CHM 1045). Class attendance, proper note taking, comprehension, and application in terms of problem solving are very important for improved performance in class. Read lecture notes before class. Actively participate during the lecture by answering questions and completing calculations. Test your understanding: Practice solving problems. Be motivated, increase your effort and be persistent with your studying.
Review your math skills.
Avoid false fixation that Chemistry is hard!!! Use your resources (Professors, Learning Assistants, Tutors, Supplemental Instructors, Peers): Do not wait until the last minute to study or get help.
