I encourage you to take some time to review this critical publication. As you read about the inspiring contributions you and other donors have made, be mindful of the need for continued financial support. The generosity of our University family is vital to our quest for excellence. I challenge you to commit yourself toward helping to strengthen our institution for the upcoming academic year. Letter from the Executive Director Dear FAMU Alumni, Friends and Supporters: On behalf of all whose lives have been touched by your generosity, thank you for your display of commitment and support. The Rattler Pride that you have expressed through giving has echoed loudly and continues to fuel our quest for excellence. The past two fiscal years have seen great success for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). The Princeton Review named FAMU as one of the “Best in the Southeast” in its “2014 Best Colleges: Region by Region” feature. The U.S. News & World Report ranked us No. 8 out of 50 public and private HBCUs in 2014, one of the top 10 best HBCUs in the nation and one of the best national universities in 2013. FAMU also appeared on the Forbes list of “Top Colleges in the U.S.” for 2013 and was awarded “Best Alumni Publication” and “Best Alumni Association of the Year” at the 2014 HBCU Awards. In 2013, FAMU was also recognized as one of the 10 schools in the Florida 20-30 Club by College Database – a recognition for being one of the top Florida colleges with the highest financial return on investment. Without question, we have seen the impact of your giving. During the 2013-2014 academic year, many students were devastated by the changes in the terms of the Parent Plus Loan. This change threatened hundreds of students’ ability to remain enrolled. Your gifts eased fears by providing financial support for nearly 350 students. More than ever, our students are counting on you and we are grateful for your overwhelming response. Looking toward the future, we are focused on excellence. Under the leadership of our newly elected President, Dr. Elmira Mangum, we are committed to providing a quality education and positioning FAMU as a best in class university. A “New Season” has begun here at FAMU and strong partnerships with people like you will help to secure our future and guarantee our success. Sincerely,

Thomas J. Haynes, Ph. D.

A New Home The FAMU Foundation purchased a building and moved from its former Lafayette Street location to a new location at 625 East Tennessee Street on December 17, 2012. Presenting a significant cost saving, this new building has hosted many University and Foundation events, including FAMU Foundation board meetings, Industry Cluster meetings, the Innovation Showcase (iSHow) and other University and community events. These activities have helped raise the Foundation’s profile at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and in the local community for further engagement, potential tenants and partnerships.

It’s a New Season F lorida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is pleased to welcome Dr. Elmira Mangum as the University’s 11th president.

provost at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, vice provost at the University at Buffalo and operations specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

After an extensive two-year search, FAMU’s Board of Trustees selected Dr. Mangum in a 10-2 vote, impressed by her enthusiasm to bring change to the University. Dr. Mangum makes history as the first woman in FAMU’s 126-year legacy to be installed as a permanent president, keeping with her theme of “It’s a New Season” and bringing a range of diversity to FAMU almost immediately.

“I would like to thank the members of the Board of Trustees, the faculty, the students, the staff, the alumni association and the community for the faith expressed in me through this recommendation. It is an honor to be recommended from among such an accomplished field of candidates,” Dr. Mangum said.

“Dr. Mangum brings to FAMU the experience, expertise and energy needed to lead the University into the next phase of its great legacy,” said Trustee Karl White, chair of the presidential search committee. “She emerged from a noteworthy pool of applicants as the candidate who the board believes is the best fit for this pivotal season in the University’s history.” Dr. Mangum has more than 28 years of experience in higher-education financial and resource management, as well as administrative leadership. Before beginning her tenure at FAMU in April 2014, she served as the vice president for planning and budget at Cornell University. Dr. Mangum also has previously held positions as senior associate

Dr. Mangum received a bachelor’s degree in geography and education from North Carolina Central University. She also graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with two master’s degrees, one in public policy and public administration and another in urban and regional planning. She received her doctorate in educational leadership and policy from the University at Buffalo. “The Board of Trustees would like to express its appreciation to everyone who invested their time and effort into selecting our 11th president,” said Board Chairman Solomon Badger. “I’d like to express special gratitude to our trustees, presidential search committee and the entire FAMU community for their hard work and support during this process.”

LIVE OUT Your

LEGACY Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) has a rich history of educating students and preparing them to become global leaders and influential members of their communities. To ensure this tradition lives on, FAMU depends on donations from dedicated alumni and friends. Rattlers from all walks of life have committed to sustaining the University through planned giving. From bequests of land to endowed scholarship funds and charitable remainder trusts, planned giving offers donors unique and creative opportunities to impact the success and longevity of the University. Tying their legacy to that of the University’s, FAMU’s planned giving donors cite their confidence in the mission and direction of FAMU as their primary reason for participating. To pay tribute to these dedicated donors, FAMU’s Division of University Advancement inducted its inaugural class of the Legacy Society at the 2014 FAMU National Alumni Association Convention in Louisville, Ky.

The inaugural class included the following 16 honorees: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Deitra Michelle Benton posthumously Phyllis “PJ” Benton posthumously Mirion P. Bowers, M.D., and Geraldine Nixon Bowers Alvin Bryant, M.D. posthumously Gregory L. Clark Jemal O. Gibson Erica D. Hill Carolyn D. Jones, Ph.D. Madeline D. and Rodney H. Portier posthumously Hezekiah Richardson Leo P. Sam, Jr. Kathy Y. Times Virginia A. Williams Freddie Gilliam Young, Ed.D.

Through the generous contributions of members of the new Legacy Society, financial resources are available to the University for decades and centuries to come. According to Audrey Simmons Smith, director of planned and major gifts, the Legacy Society also will serve as an avenue to encourage and inform alumni about the plethora of options available. “In order to sustain this great institution, it is imperative that alumni become engaged and give back,” Smith said. “Our strategy going forward is to continue educating them on the value and simplicity of supporting the University through planned giving.” Planned giving signifies a pledge to preserve and extend the FAMU legacy of continuing excellence in education.

An Inspiring Mother-Daughter Duo FAMU Foundation, Inc. 2012-2013 & 2013-2014 Annual Report | 10

A

ffectionately known as “P.J.,” Phyllis Benton was a mentor, role model and friend to many. Born in Plant City, Fla., P.J. graduated magna cum laude from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s (FAMU) School of Business and Industry (SBI). Following a 10-year career with Southern Bell Telephone, she ventured out of the corporate world and into entrepreneurship. She launched her entrepreneurial career by acquiring McDonald’s restaurant franchises in Gulfport, Miss., and in St. Petersburg, Fla., and became known throughout the Tampa Bay area as a pioneer in the restaurant industry. An outstanding alumna and supporter of SBI, P.J. also provided support for scholarships and other special initiatives. Guided by her mother’s tender love and devotion, P.J.’s daughter, Deitra Benton, learned at an early age that discipline and commitment were the keys to

success as she assisted her mother in operating the McDonald’s franchise. P.J.’s footprints also led Deitra to FAMU’s SBI, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration. Having a determination to make a difference, she worked in corporate America where she used her business management and marketing skills at several corporations. Continuing to excel as an entrepreneur, P.J. relocated to Charlotte, N.C., where she established PJJD Enterprises. As CEO, P.J. operated three quick service establishments under the umbrella company – Papa John’s, Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina and Einstein Bros. Bagels. Deitra later joined P.J. and served as the president of PJJD Enterprises. Together, the motherdaughter duo expanded the company to include ownership in approximately 20 food and retail brands located in five airports in the U.S.

Following Deitra’s untimely passing, P.J. and her family established the Deitra Benton Endowed Scholarship to honor her legacy by creating an opportunity for another SBI student. In May 2014, the University unveiled a bronze plaque at the Eternal Flame Monument in her memory. Later that month, P.J. also passed away and the endowment was renamed the P.J. and Deitra Benton Endowed Scholarship to remember the Benton’s family legacy and their contributions to FAMU and the community. Through this scholarship, P.J. and Deitra’s qualities of commitment and passion will become the fuel for another legacy in the making. Left to carry on their legacy are P.J.’s two sons, Keith and Frank Johnson. The FAMU family is eternally grateful to the Benton family for their unwavering commitment to preserving the future of the University.

Celebrating 25 Years of Support from Dedicated Faculty and Staff

Sustained by the commitment and dedication of its faculty and staff, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) has created and maintained a legacy built on academic excellence, affordability and diversity. Dedicated to shaping the lives of students, the support of faculty and staff extends beyond the classroom and includes an annual commitment of financial support.

The Faculty and Staff Scholarship Endowment Campaign is an annual fundraising effort advocating student scholarships. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the campaign has experienced a tremendous increase over the past few years. With donations amounting to nearly $169,000 for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, they totaled over $161,000 in 2012-2013 and increased to more than $182,000 in 2013-2014. Next

year, the Foundation’s aim is to reach an overall goal of $250,000. The continued growth and success of this endeavor would not be possible without the campaign’s area ambassadors and generous donors. The FAMU Foundation would like to thank participants for their unwavering support and Rattler pride.

Get Social and Support FAMU on #GivingTuesday

You know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but have you heard of #GivingTuesday? In 2013, the FAMU Foundation participated in #GivingTuesday, a national campaign designed to raise awareness and funds for important causes each Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Participating for the first time, the FAMU Foundation relied on social media, text messaging and email marketing to invite students, faculty, alumni and other supporters to show their support for the University. Raising more than $7,000, the Foundation looks forward to continued participation in the coming years. The donations and support received helps sustain the University’s commitment to providing students with an affordable, quality education.

Increased Scholarships Keep Students in School The 2013-2014 academic year saw students greatly affected by the devastating changes to the terms of the Parent Plus Loan. Threatening to hinder students’ ability to remain in school, the FAMU Foundation countered these effects with an increase in student scholarships. Providing nearly $2 million in additional scholarships, this financial support helped nearly 350 students continue their education at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU).

In an effort to streamline the application process and increase accessibility, the Foundation also launched its new FAMU Awards and Scholarship Tracking System (FAST). Powered through STARS Online, FAST allowed students to apply for scholarships online in minutes. With over 200 scholarships available, students could apply for as many scholarships as desired. FAMU’s alumni have provided many of these merit and need-based scholarships.

Enhancing Customer Service During Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) Business & Industry Cluster’s fall 2013 meeting, members of the Key Executive Council continued dialogue centered around customer service resulting in an identified need for what they’ve called a “balanced scorecard.” Under the direction of

1. What do customers value and need from FAMU?

Cheryl Harris Booker, Business & Industry Cluster chair, the group sought to identify FAMU’s “value proposition” and called upon Dr. Jennifer Collins to mediate the discussion. Focusing on corporate partners, Collins guided this conversation by posing the following three questions:

2. How should the University view corporate partners as customers?

3. How does the University convey its message?

Noting “active alumni participation” as a metric used by some companies in the philanthropic process, the group also held an extensive discussion on “selling” FAMU to alumni. Enthused by the discussion, the Cluster made plans to finalize the “balanced scorecard” and outline a strategy for implementation. The FAMU Foundation looks forward to working with the Cluster to maintain the scorecard, striving for an enhanced customer service experience.

Shanise Bush: A Student Excelling Thanks to University Scholarship Donations Shanise Bush, a senior at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), did not receive a scholarship her freshman year. As an out-of-state student from Washington, D.C., schooling costs added up to be more than expected. As Bush tried to focus on her school work, she worried about her financial obligations and began seeking employment, while her mother assiduously paid tuition out-of-pocket. Bush knew something had to change in order to get through school and achieve her dreams. She applied for several scholarships using the FAMU Foundation’s new scholarship database, and finally her hard work paid off – she was awarded several scholarships to help pay for her education. Thanks to the generosity of FAMU’s donors, Bush is now able to focus on academics and pursuing her career. Bush is a biology/pre-medical student with aspirations to go to medical school and become an OB-GYN. She hopes to work in an underserved, underrepresented area, such as a rural community where patients typically would have to drive long distances for medical services. She is the president of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and secretary for Alpha Kappa Mu honors society. She is also a member of the FSU College of Medicine’s Undergraduate Science

Shanise Bush, FAMU Chapter President of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity and Excellence (USSTRIDE) Program which rigorously prepares students for medical school. “I would not be where I am today if I hadn’t applied for FAMU Foundation scholarships,” Bush said. “I feel blessed that I have been able to accomplish so much at FAMU, and I look forward to being able to pursue my future goals.”

Cheryl A. Harris Booker: A Leader in Promoting Diversity After graduating from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Cheryl Harris immediately started working toward becoming a powerhouse in procurement and supplier diversity. Her impressive resume includes various positions held at American Express Financial Advisors and Accenture, LLP. Currently, she serves as the senior vice president and chief procurement officer of Sourcing and Procurement Solutions at Allstate Insurance Company with responsibility for optimizing a spend portfolio of $6 billion and overseeing Allstate’s supplier diversity program. Since the beginning of her career, Harris has been committed to inclusive diversity in the corporate realm with an authentic commitment and dedication to serving her community. At American Express Financial Advisors, Harris led the Black Employee Network as its president (with another FAMUan serving as the vice president). Harris joined Accenture and launched the company’s first supplier diversity development program and acted as an executive sponsor for Accenture’s African American Interest Group (AAIG). Now at Allstate, she oversees the Supplier Diversity Exchange, an all-day networking event held for diverse suppliers to meet one-on-one with staff members to promote their products and services. Harris’ work in this arena has resulted in her nomination to serve as a board member for the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). She is known as a thought leader in this business segment and is often sought out as a national speaker.

Understanding the importance of relationships, and in appreciation for all that she gained at FAMU, Harris has tirelessly served as an advocate for her alma mater. As chair of FAMU’S Business & Industry Cluster, she has worked to enhance and expand FAMU’s corporate relationships while also seeking to provide professional opportunities for students. As a testament to her dedication, Harris has recruited FAMU students at every company she has worked at over the last 25 years. She has also served on the FAMU Foundation board of directors for the past two years. Harris has received numerous awards and accolades that highlight her professional accomplishments, including a Global Women of Influence award in 2009 by Global Women’s Executive magazine. Additionally, Savoy magazine recognized her in 2012 on their list of “Top Women in Corporate America” and again in 2014 among the “Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America.” In 2012, the NGLCC named her the “Outstanding Corporate Leader of the Year.” FAMU recognized Harris as an “Outstanding Alumnus” at its 125th anniversary celebration. Most recently, she was inducted into the FAMU School of Business and Industry Hall of Fame as it celebrated its 40th anniversary. Harris is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., serves on the boards for Teen Living Programs and the Chicago Humanities Festival and serves as the spokesperson for Allstate’s Quotes for Education Program. Harris and her husband, Attorney Brian Booker (a fellow FAMUan), have five children and currently reside in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.
