Where do you find inspiration for your song writing, and what is the process like? Generally it’s from being super f@#%ing depressed, rejected, upset, heart broken... the usual. I’m no different to any other self consumed artist out there. I don’t write a lot but when I do it will be like a flood. 50 songs in a week... Generally I get the lyrics and melody first and then add guitar or a cow bell to it If I was someone who had never heard your music, what experience will I get from going to your gigs? You would be moist (winks) You’ve shared the stage with so many American bands, how does it make you feel coming from a place like South Africa? F@#%ing unbelievable. I’m a no one... just a Durban born girl who had a big dream and an even bigger ambition... I am blessed but in no way have I been handed ANYTHING! I have worked my ass off to get where I am and will continue to do so! How is living in America compared to living in South Africa and what are the different music scenes like? To be honest, even South Africa’s biggest bands look pathetic to average bands here. America is just so exposed to great music, great players and excellent instruments... I was shocked when I landed on this scene and I am literally chalk and cheese to what I was in SA.
You got a very good girl gone bad image. Tell us a bit more about it? (Laughs) Do I??? Yup. One of my favourite shirts says "smoke crack, worship satan" ... I just think people are so judgemental in their little worlds and need to chill out a little. Yes, I came from a very sheltered Christian childhood, but church was where I learnt to play and learnt to have good values, so I am thankful for the foundation. Is there any new album releases in the future and where can we get it? I am currently working on an unplugged album with WUV from POD. It’s gonna be SIIIICK! I am also doing a dance project... its metal vocal meets Ke’sha meets Lady Gaga. FUN STUFF!! What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands? ABSOLUTELY DO IT!! Be real and objective... some people don’t have what it takes to make it but it can still be fun! Don’t get trapped in the lifestyle... the sex, drugs and rock n roll will ruin your career What do you wish in the future in terms of Stealing Love Jones? To be honest, nothing much at all. I am currently writing for some big artists and am featuring vocals with Linkin Park, P.O.D. and Aaron Lewis. I don’t really see the band thing starting up again. I’m in a position right now where I can do what I love and actually have a life... so Im stoked!!!!!

Conclave Conclave
Melodic Metal at its Best
Conclave, a five piece melodic metalcore band from Durban, consists of the original two members Grant Scrooby and Deven Phillips on guitar, then the more seasoned vocalist Jared Jack, and new additions making up the rhythm section Andrew and Robin Topping. These guys put a hell of alot of effort and skills into each practice, making live shows even better every single time they take to the stage. They are very serious about their music, but aren't afraid to joke around on stage and off, making sure that people take the time to laugh as well as form a good mosh pit. They have just come off from playing shows at RiotFest, the Burn Stage at Thornfest, and more recently they opened for Contrast the Water and Seven Year Kismet (UK) while they were here on their tour. This band still has alot more coming for their fans, and if you haven't heard them, then what are you waiting for! They are currently recording and shooting the music video for their single End Of The Line, as well as having an EP in the works for release soon. Check them out on Facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation, or Myspace!
Where did it all start as band? Devin: It started at Gumtree, I placed the ad up looking for somebody to jam with, then Grant and I played for about a year just getting songs every week with one practice, then we went through a couple of members and nobody was ever committed enough, the guys would come in one practice session then never come in the next practice session . Some people came and sat, sang one Koom Baya song and then never came back (laughs). Then we found the two cousins who were Davin and Dewan who we played with for 6-8 months, then Jared came 2 months when we were playing with the cousins and he still with us unfortunately (laughs). Then we found Rob and Andy, I love these guys (laughs) and that’s where it all started. How would you define your music? Grant: Our sound is basically melodic, we try to focus more on melodic than heavy but the heavy is a natural thing that just comes into our music, cause we always listen to metal since I’ve known Devin and we always had a vision of what we would like our music to sound like. I think now with the last few songs we’ve written, it’s finally to that stage where we realise that sort of sound especially with Rob and Andy coming in it boosts up our sound and gives us a new dynamic. Jared: If you check most Durban metal bands, they are all heavy excluding Arise to Conquer and we wanted to go for something that we enjoy like Devin is a bullet, all that remains guitarist, he’s a very as I lay dying guitarist and mix it up cause we didn’t want to be this heavy band that Durban sees over and over again. Now with Rob and Andy, it has progressed so much more and we really enjoy playing with each other. Rob: I just hit things as hard and fast as I possibly can. What inspires you as a band? Everyone: Boros and Borange, (Beer and fresh orange juice). Robin: Sex, drugs, rock and roll, Harry Potter, as I lay dying, the ability to reach someone and make them listen to our music, enjoy it and make someone start a band so they can bring
What is your favourite Conclave song? Robin: Nations at war Andy: End of the line... Devin: End of the line... Grant: The struggle Jared: End of the line, the struggle, I just can’t choose (laughs)
If I was someone who had never heard your music, what experience would I get from going to your gigs? Jared: Well first of all they will experience the drummer being naked at times on stage (laughs), they’d expect the bassist to mosh like a drunken monkey on speed, on a serious point you will experience something different to Durban as a whole Devin: You will experience fun cause if people have fun on stage you have a good time, I mean like we make jokes on stage and do funny things like for deep heat on the balls which is one of our songs we say that this next song is about hermaphrodites with thigh injuries, it’s called deep heat on the balls!!! That kind of stuff. Jared: And also there’s another one, this is about having sex with two lesbians, all for nothing (laughs), we do that funny stuff and we want to make it fun, like at times we have funny songs and we want everybody to have a good time. We have some serious songs like The Struggle and also basically we just have a different side and want everybody to have fun and feel what we feel when giving it to them.
Jared: you know what....everybody has a different style that they like, I know what I think is like I said before, Devin has a super melodic sound and Grant has a very heavy sound and Rob is a hardcore punk that just likes to go apeshit and never keeps time and never wants to listen to the click track. I always try argue like I always try to bring punk in the band but they never want to let me do it, they rather slap me (laughs), but everybody’s unique things really make it up like our best songs have been written when we all work as a team.
What sort of crowd is your music aimed at? Everyone: Everyone and everything Robin: Everyone who listens to metal, everyone who wants to jump around and have some fun, everyone who wants to come down and have a good time Do you have any rituals before going on stage? Devin: Rob likes to set up his drums in the camp site and carry them through turnstyles (laughs) then make the lead guitarist with fragile fingers carry them for him (laughs). Jared likes to down a bottle of sours and then go on stage to perform. Andy: I get really drunk and then go play (laughs) Robin: Devin just becomes awesome, Devin exudes awesome onstage Jared: He never stops playing his damn guitar Do you ever get nervous before performing on stage? Robin: We used to, so we drank alot but we realised that hurt the music so now we don’t. Jared: I don’t think anybody really gets nervous but I shit my pants because I have to talk to everybody and I’m an idiot anyways (laughs) Do you as a band ever have differences of opinion and how do you deal with them? Grant: all the time, every friggin practice it’s like that, we argue about it, then we forget about it, then we come next practice and play again. Robin: we argue, we drink beer, we make love Robin: we argue, we drink beer, we make love
You have just played at Thornfest. How was the whole experience? Everyone: Epic, ridiculous, stupid, drunken, mental, uh disgustipation, borange, metal overload, memories lost, neck really sore, countless mosh pits, people banging their heads together and awesomeness Jared: Absolutely amazing to play out of Kwa-Zulu Natal for the first time, we saw new faces, we met new bands, made new connections and got to head bang so much to all our favourite bands and it was a really good experience to find out how the scene thrives especially up there. Where do you find inspiration for your song writing and what is the process like? Jared: Inspiration comes from each individual how we feel in that certain time, eg we write a heavy song to express how we feel. It is based on our band influences and inspiration.
Do you have any new album releases in the pipe line? Jared: Well basically I think that with Rob and Andy being in the band for about 4 months, we starting to come up with some good songs, from now we recording next weekend and doing a music video and from then on with our new writing process we just argued , fought, discussed over and loved each other afterwards and gave big hugs, I think we will probably be starting write an album now, we want it to be so good that no one has a bad word to say, so maybe in the next two months or so we’ll have an album
What do you wish for the future for Conclave? Devin: Groupies Grant: Success, lots of albums, a guitar endorsement Andy: Run around on stage using wireless guitars and mics Robin: bigger, better, longer and stronger

ARCHIE COMICS!!! These funny, but lame old school comics are just one of the things that entertained us as kids. With Archie’s stories, Jughead's jokes and the girls Betty and Veronica our teenage years were complete knowing we all had some kind of nerd in us.

THE BIG QUESTION If you had a theme song, what would it be?
Guy Mitchell (DBN) Sunshine the werewolf by Dillinger Escape Plan.
PHOTO IN THE ATTIC Photo in the attic is basically the best onstage photo of the month, taken my one of Durban’s photographers. I search down and low, up and high. Yes... even in peoples attics to find the most arbitrary yet amazing photos. This is what I have managed to find this monthA picture of Matt Wilson of Car Boot Vendors. Taken by Robyn Paige Beattie.
Michelle Glen (DBN) All I want by A Day To Remember.
James Klopper (CPT) A 31min track called Psycho semantic blockage by Raleigh Theodore Sakers.
Alex Silva (CPT) The gardens all nighters by The Number 12 Looks Like You.
Patrick Fly Basson (DBN) Bat country by Avenged Sevenfold.
PICK OF THE MONTH! JAMES KLOPPER of CAPTAIN STU (CPT) 1O THINGS HE LOVES!!!! 1. I love waking up a few hours earlier than everyone else for some productive alone time - "the early bird" kind of vibe. 2. I love being an argumentative shit - nothing about your opinion makes any sense to me so prepare to feel stupid. 3. I love lying on hard floors listening to entire albums from start to finish, Big Lebowski styles! 4. I love long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners at romantic locations before we take a tour of my medieval themed S&M dungeon. 5. I love writing out long, self indulgent lists for random publications. 6. I love people who dress like pirates. I also have a little contempt for them, but this is about love so let’s forget I said that. 7. I love vest tans on skinny runts. 8. I love shouting "Beef WHAT?" at every muscle bound steroid freak I see strutting down some beachfront looking like he has a bunch of carrots up his arse. 9. I love side boob - often so much better to look at than the real thing. 10. I love Durban punk bands that play live at The Winston. iKapa and Jozi have fuck all on the Stone City!
Why touch the Bloodline
To be honest with you I didn’t know much of Grynd Rodd Muse up until now, even though the band itself has been together for over ten years with a new member and band name changes over the years. I think to myself how can I have not heard of them all these years because they are amazing. Having two albums under their belt, this band has definitely got what it takes to make it big in the music industry. As I listen to their 2nd and latest album BLOODLINE on repeat. I am mesmerised by the quality of this bands sound. I know I am now a huge fan and if you haven’t heard of Grynd Rodd Muse yet, then ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you, one of South Africa's finest bands Grynd Rodd Muse!!!
What is the meaning of Grynd Rodd Muse? Sean: Not quite sure how to answer this one except that the name encapsulates what we are about musically. The combination of heavy riffs and groove beats interspersed with melody. We needed to come up with a name that best described the sound we were going for and Sean used to play in a band called K-Grind and has always liked the way the word “grind” really captures the mood of metal, whilst “muse” tones it down a little. Our crossover style needed a crossover name…Grynd Rodd Muse achieves this. What does the song and album name Bloodline mean? Bloodline refers to family ties. The song Bloodline is about child abuse and how children are manipulated by the same love that is meant to mould them, by the people closest and most important to them. The concept originally came from a news piece that we read about a young girl who was molested by her father repeatedly. So, yeah, basically just a campaign against parents fiddling with their kids. Where did it all start as band? Sean: In the middle of 2004, where Chris, Alan and myself were just jamming with a colleague named Sizwe Shabala. But Al, Chris and I had been jamming for quite some time before that together in a band called Sutherland. GRM was kinda a complete change in direction for us. Alan: My brother and I started jamming together when we were teenagers. We were in a band called Sutherland. We
then had a vocalist named Dave Campbell who was in a band called Fruit Fly Navigators at the time. Then he left and Sean joined and we had a whole bunch of bass players as Sutherland was together for 10 years. We broke that up and then my brother and I just started jamming again and we invited Sean over just to listen and not to be the singer and we couldn’t get rid of him ( laugh). Then we had Sizwe on bass. When he left, a guy by the name of Wally took over...wait.... his real name is Warren.. Don’t think he would be too happy with us calling him Wally (laughs). Then after Warren left we got Neil and then about two and a half years ago we got Garry who has lasted the longest. Chris brought him in from a band called Porcelain Truck Drivers and up until yesterday we called him number 42 (laughs) coz we were so sick of learning these bassists names and then they would leave anyway (laughs), I'm kind of worried now that if we call him by his name that he might leave (laughs) How do you define your music? Garry: It’s a mixture between...... well we all have our own influences but the strongest influence that comes through is Metallica, just mainly with the groove type of beat but I say it’s a mixture between Metallica and Pantera. It’s not like heavy metal, it’s more like groove metal, it’s got a bit of bounce in it and that’s cool. That’s basically what we go for. Alan: Ja well look....the drumming side is Metallica-ish because Chris is a massive Metallica fan, but any band of today’s day and age who choke on a guitar, it’s because of Metallica. They brought it to the mainstream. Whether they like Metallica or not, they have been influenced by them. From my side its like Nirvana, Pantera, like simple guitar and catchy stuff, I’m not like this uber heavy shredder dude, which suits me fine because everybody is now. There are even twelve year olds shredding dudes under the table whereas I like to keep it simple. Sean: Groove Rock Metal…..but it’s very subjective. Different people have different views. We’ve been likened to everything from Godsmack and Disturbed to Metallica and Pantera. We even had someone compare us to The Melvins the other day!
We're too hard for normal rock and too light for heavy metal so we're kind of in the middle. We're heavy rock
How does your music differ from other metal bands out there? Garry: It’s technically simpler. We don’t want to have long convoluted solos and over technical riffs. We've got colourful solos. The simpler the music, the more feeling we give to it and so we can get our message across easier. It’s all about writing songs with hooks. Sean: There are so many different genres of metal these days and at the same time the scene’s become so diluted now that a lot of the stuff you hear is becoming quite generic. Our style is a little more crossover so I’m not sure where it would fit in with the “pure” metal scene. Alan: For me I just find it that heavier music seems to be better these days and thats cool and it’s all good because I listen to some serious heavy shit and I also listen to some seriously mellow stuff, but for me personally, I see myself more of a performer then someone who’s busting these riffs that are so fast, and so heavy and so brutal. I like to move around on the stage and to do that I need to sacrifice a bit of technicality, but for me it’s more about letting myself go in that moment, and I'm not playing for a bunch of musos because the musos in the crowd are these guys going "He’s not playing that scale right." I'm playing it for the guys in the front, chicks that are dancing and drunk dudes, those are the people I’m trying to appeal to as a performer. Its more about when we're on stage. I just find its more about being a performance band so that you didn’t pay your R20 to get in the venue and you're standing there watching me stand dead still because I’m just trying so badly to get what I’ve written right. Oh and i cant Play long Convoluted solo’s (laughs) Garry: Where we do struggle in terms being in the genre of metal bands and how we differ from other metal bands.
What is your favourite Grynd rodd muse song? Alan: The one we haven’t written yet is my favourite because I’m always amped to move it forward. I love all the old songs. They're cool, but I’m always keen to see what we're going to do next. My brother Chris would like United in Hate and Distortification Sean: I dig Enigma Garry: I like United in Hate. Listening songs maybe like Bloodline and Corkage and playing songs United in Hate and Enigma If I was someone who had never heard your music, what experience would I get from going to your gigs? Alan: It’s kind of subjective because I’ve known guys who have not liked our record, but then they have come to our live shows and that turned them around and they became fans, and then I know guys that have seen our live shows and they didn’t dig it and then the one night they just came out to another live show and they were in the right mood and everything was cool and they also became fans. Sean: One thing that we do try is to get people involved in some form or another. That’s always a good thing. You're either going to get involved and enjoy it or sit in the back and just tap your foot, but we don’t generally lose people at live shows as they normally stay to watch the whole show. Alan: Yeah, people stay to watch, and at the end they also know the words and the songs. That’s where the simplicity comes in, because our songs are catchy and easy to remember. What sort of crowd is your music aimed at? Garry: Anything between 15 and 60. Anyone who is willing to go out and have a party (laughs). Sean: The most diverse crowd as possible, but we have always been part of the alternative metal scene so those are the guys who generally come and watch. But, yeah, I reckon the average age of our fan base is between 15 and25 years old. Alan: If you are a 12 year old rocking out in the front then thats cool. I’ve got a friend who has a 12 year old
son, and she has an album and she can’t get it back from him and he can’t understand why we are not famous. Why are the Parlotones famous and we aren’t? I think its age defined because my parents didn’t like us when we started out and my dads like 60 and he has listened to our last two albums and he is impressed. People's ages in our Facebook profile vary from much older people to young. Unfortunately, the younger crowd can't always come to our shows. Do you have any rituals before going on stage? Alan : Yes. Whenever we are about to play, it will be like five minutes before we have to get on stage and then I will like need to pee (laughs) so that is our ritual (laugh). To make sure we go to the toilet, I don’t think we the type of band to do a team huddle and all that (laugh)
What is the craziest thing that has ever happened on stage? Alan: Played the whole set without making a mistake (laugh) Sean: We were playing a show in Toti and Alan needed to pee, but he had a cordless guitar. So he just leaves the stage during the performance and you ould hear the guitar being played but he was nowhere to be seen ( laugh). He took his guitar in to the toilet and was playing and peeing at the same time (laugh) Alan: We had lots of hanging chords in that song so it was easy to play and pee (laugh). Another story is we were playing at the Winston and they had just got a new smoke machine... So we were playing and next thing I see smoke... I stop playing and shout the “the gigs on fire” I run off stage and everyone is looking at me and my band is saying “Dude it’s just the smoke machine.” (laugh) So I just casually walk back on stage and start playing as if nothing happened, but I was so embarrassed.

Ok so last month boasted two great festivals... Riot festival and Thornfest...This month we look and review Riot fest organized by Fanbase’s very own Justine aka Stini and Conclave drummer Robin topping, we catch up with them to re live what was riot fest... A crazy night of bands and musicians busting it up and raising over R6000 for the SPCA... well done to all in involved!!!
Organiser Robin Topping handing over money raised from the Riot Fest. All proceeds went to the SPCA
So the original idea for organizing an event of some sort germinated in the multicolored mind of Justine aka Stini about a year ago, in the middle of a drought of good shows. At the time, lacking resources and such, she stashed it away in the back of her head, and brought it up with the always gregarious metal head Robin Topping, forming the core for the festival. After multiple name changes (Fallout Fest, Vance Fest, the First Riot, ConFest...) we finally settled on Riot Fest in the middle of a noodle eating session. The idea was to put on the type of shows that we remember the Durban scene
producing back in the day, such as the Uprising, Mishi Jones, the old SunSkate church shows... We wanted to get a good cross section of the talent that we have here in the 031, so we decided on bands that brought both acoustic, chilled vibes, rock n roll, punk, and metal to the plate. At the festival we had a few great open mic acts to start off the party, and then went into the bands themselves that we could rustle up who were willing to give us their time for charitable purposes. The bands who played were The Kickstands (acoustic GODS), The Cheap Bad Habits (rock n roll charlatans), Explosion (more like pants explosion), Car Boot Vendors (hobo chic love), The Otherwise (sex punk), Sibling Rivalry (the originals, yes I said it!), Conclave (metalcore mooseclaw lovers), and Beyond The Pale (bringing the effing thunder!).
The event started 2pm on a sunny Saturday, with people coming through the door early to make sure they got a decent look at as many bands as possible, as well as the feeling that the place was going to pack out, and it did! Close to four hundred and fifty people came through the door (that’s including all the bands, photographers, extra sponsor people, and miscellaneous monkeys who had managed to justify a way in), raising R6950 for the SPCA, you bunch of furry and fluffy lovers you! We are aiming to get that number a little higher at the next Fest, and the event will always be purely for the profit of charitable organizations, not individuals. The idea is to have the Fest probably biannually, with the first near the beginning of the year, and the second mid-yearish. We want to put the event in the same class as the old Uprising festival eventually, slowly growing the event as we go. At the moment, we are busy talking to a few bands from around the country as well as the raggamuffins here in Stone City to organize a line up worthy of a bigger, but just as passionate audience as the last Riot Fest. We are well aware of the danger of letting people down after the initial success, and are working extra hard to make sure it only gets better from here.
Without the help of the guys at Marshall Music, Prestige sound, family, friends, and all the fans, metalheads, indie kids, hipsters, acoustic klaarers here in Durbs, there is no way that we could have had such an amazing time at the last event, and we hope that next time, probably around June/July, you will all be there, this time with your grannies, uncles, aunties, frenemies, distant cousins and the cat for good measure!!!

MR BRETT F.BOTHA GUITARIST EXTRAORDINAIRE
My first encounter with Brett was when he first joined Kissed by Katie... the first time I saw him perform was at Jackie Horner for an acoustic set. He nailed that gig which was quite amazing because I knew that he was originally a bass player but here he was jamming lead guitar alongside the great Katie Windt. I made Kissed By Katie my favourite South African band and continued to go to every gig I could to watch them in action. I already was friends with Katie and was soon sitting at the same table with Brett drinking and having an awesome time... every time I see him perform I am amazed by his energy on stage especially at a live rock electric show. He goes insane. What age did you start playing guitar and when did you start taking it seriously? Well basically before guitar I played bass for about 3 to 4 years. I remember back in the day I was jamming with good old Greg and harry from The Otherwise. We had a few little band efforts at first before we decided to start taking things more seriously.. I use to sit in my room and play bass everyday trying to get good ( laughs) until eventually Greg said that we should get things going ... so we formed The Otherwise, After my time with The otherwise I did a couple of metal bands and so forth. I’ve only started seriously playing electric guitar for about a year now since I’ve been playing for Kissed By Katie. Tell us what setup and what guitars you use? Guitar wise, I’m a fender man, I don’t have time for Gibson unless somebody wants to give me one for free(laughs). I play a strat which was given to me by a good friend of mine who works with the likes of Steve Fitaar etc etc , he’s a guitar tech, his name is Chris, it was a gift from him to me when I started playing guitar so he gave me a Squire Strat. Amp wise, I really like Fender amps and boss pedals, I like alot of delay in my effects and I like really old school
grungy distortion and really really high mids for solos.
efforts and then I met up with Katie through Greg and we just started jamming, I still remember she was Do you come from a musical very reluctant to have me in her band background? at first, she actually went behind my Musical background, I can’t really say back and asked Grant from that I come from one, my dad played Glenwood village music and a whole a bit of organ in his church , but I bunch of other musicians about me think I’m actually the first practicing until she came to my house and let musician in the family and I learnt me audition. (Laughs) I’ve worked everything I know from listening to the guys from Silverback, they a hip alot of great tunes and watching a hop band from Durban, they work shitload of MTV. (Laughs) with RUNDBM. I’ve been in the Battle of the Tributes twice , we did Red Hot What are some of your influences? Chilli Peppers when I was in The Otherwise, And we’ve recently just My influences I would say are: The did a fokofpolisiekar tribute in 2010 ... Red Hott Chilli peppers, I used to The coolest thing was we got to meet listen to Flea a lot as a bassist, also Fokof and it was pretty cool. I did a Les Claypool from Primus , Jimmy guest with Silverback "Say Goodbye Hendricks ,slash from Guns and Forever" on their mixed tape "Be Roses (velvet Revolver) etc etc .... fearless" which you can download off When I was growing up, I used to the web , it’s on my facebook listen to a lot of metal bands like Metallica, Pantera and stuff like that page....Mostly my main Focus now is ..... even Harry from The Otherwise is Kissed by Katie and making sure that a huge influence on me, when I used things go smoothly and all that... to play bass and stuff For them, I used to watch his guitar playing and I You mentioned you played bass, and now you playing electric would be like WOW, that sounds guitar, is there any other flipping cool (laughs), I’ve learnt alot instruments you play? from him, he’s given me a good few lessons as well . Katie our vocalist, I play a lil bit of drums, guitar, bass she pretty much showed me all the and I Love singing, I reckon my basics when I first started playing biggest dream ever since I was a and now I’m better than her (laughs) little kid was to be a drummer of a just kidding. love u Kate :) band, that guy that sits at the back and makes all the noise and gets to sit down during the whole gig Before going on stage, do you (laughs) which has been always quite have a practice before a gig and appealing to me. I really love drums, that? I’ve broken a few drum skins in the I warm up quite a lot because I’m a process (laughs), but my main very, very tall man so every single instrument now would definitely be bone in my body cracks when I guitar, it’s so versatile and you can stretch and all that nonsense pretty much sit and jam with anyone (laughs). A lot of the times before the gig I’d be really bummed because and make something cool out of it.. and sing over it, my main strengths all I want to do is play guitar and I would be my guitar and my vocals. can’t because the guitars on stage and you don’t want to make a noise on stage before the gig so I usually just take an acoustic guitar to play around with before I go on stage. You currently play for Kissed By Katie, what other projects have you worked on or busy working on? After I played with The Otherwise for about a year and a half, I left and didn’t do anything with music for about a year, I was just pretty much doing the day job thing, so I didn’t do much of music for a while except just messing around with little band
You’ve been known to play acoustic and live shows, what do you prefer to play and what do you get out of each show? Acoustic shows are fun because it’s more of an intimate thing with the crowd because everyone sits around and sings along and gets drunk with us, that’s cool. Live shows are definitely my favourite thing because I get to go insane on stage and release all the nonsense in my head (laughs) and it’s a fun time of meeting new people at shows and getting my music out there and it’s just a load of fun but it’s also very nice to play an acoustic show like say at Billy the Bums because it’s very chilled and it’s a completely different experience, it’s actually harder work playing an acoustic show because when you play a live show, everyone is so finished and there’s such a vibe that even if you make a mistake, nobody will hear it but at acoustic show you’ll hear it. Are you looking to expand overseas? Definitely. I want to be sitting on the L.A Strip eating a McDonald's burger sitting in my Chevrolet looking all “fly” (laugh) , I really want to make music my bread and butter one day, I want to work with everyone from Timberland to Eminem to Jazz musicians and cross all musical boundaries .. what I mean is .... I want to work with everyone (laugh) What is the best and most weirdest thing that has ever happened to you on stage? The best thing that happened was during Splashy Fen 2010, there were a whole bunch of girls in the front row throwing panties and at us. (Laughs) The weirdest thing that happened was during a show we played at Good Music Tuesdays last year And there was a group of girls and guys that jumped on stage with us and grabbed my microphone and nearly pulled my guitar off my body to play .... that was super rad (laughs).
Lookout for Brett F.Botha playing for Kissed by Katie who have been confirmed for Splashy Fen
You’ve just played at Thornfest, how was the whole experience? Thornfest was super cool because it was a different audience completely....There were a lot of rock acts, punk bands and stuff, and plenty metal bands so it was cool. I remember partying with a few bands from Durban : The Hollow and Conclave and it was so different because we were sorta like a commercial band and them partying with us was super cool because they came and watched our show and we had all these metal heads rocking out to our music ... They such legend guys as well....... And how they do stuff there in Joburg....... like how they run their festivals there is completely different to Durban and the vibe is so different. I wouldn’t say it was a better vibe, it was just different....But rad :)

Two of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians – Karen Zoid and Valiant Swart – have been confirmed for the 22nd Splashy Fen Music Festival to be held near Underberg over the Easter long weekend from April 21 to 25. A multi award-winning artist, Karen Zoid recently released her highly anticipated fifth album entitled ‘Terms and Conditions’. Known for her super-charged rock energy and distinctive voice, she is a South African music icon whose song writing is studied by university students as part of their academic modules. Never without his trademark harmonica and acoustic guitar, Valiant Swart is regarded as one of the foremost Afrikaans songwriters of the past 20 years, during which time he has notched up over 3 000 local and international performances and released 14 albums. Aside from being an acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician, he is also a poet, composer and actor. Both Zoid and Swart are being sponsored by the new KFC in Underberg, which is set to open its doors towards the end of April 2011 – just in time for Splashy Fen! The new restaurant will also have a snack stand at the festival to satisfy visitors’ taste for the original flavours of KFC. Other artists confirmed for this year’s festival include the likes of Dan Patlansky, The Rudimentals, Good Luck, Holiday Murray, City Bowl Mizers, The Kickstands, Boulevard Blues, The La Els, Wrestlerish, Margaret’s Daughter and The Aquarian Quartet, featuring guitar maestros Steve Newman, Syd Kitchen, Greg Georgiades and Tony Cox. The full line-up will be announced shortly. Aside from awesome music and top-class sound, lighting and stage production, Splashy Fen also offers fun outdoor activities for the whole family, colourful arts and crafts, as well as a variety of food and drink outlets catering to all tastes. This year will also see the introduction of a new Freestyle Tribal Village, which will host workshops in various art forms, plus activities like fire poi and interactive drumming. In addition to Splashy Fen’s on-site camping facilities, which include a separate family campsite and tent hotel, there is also a wide selection of guest houses, self-catering cottages, backpacker lodges, hotels and B&B establishments in the Underberg area, all of which are within easy reach for daily commuting to and from the festival.
