Hello everybody welcome to the Christmas edition of Fanbase Music Mag, and what an awesome issue we have in store for you. Without being vane, I have decided, because it is the Christmas season, I’m going to make this issue extra special and put my own band “Fiery Hill” on the front cover. I play bass in the band along with some awesome talented friends. Read all about us in Danni’s Punk Pit section. Thanks to Danni for interviewing us, we luv you long time). Also in Danni section she features a great comedy idol of mine, ladies and gentleman I give to you Lamy, SA legend of “Lekka Laughter”. Lamy has been involved with comedy for over 38 years and has helped mould some of SA’s biggest talent in comedy. Go read all about him in Danni Punk Pit. Another big hit “DJ Papi” what an awesome duo. I get to interview super group “The Monroes” who are currently living it up in the US of A, go check out their interview and read all about the band and the release of their debut album “The Devils Carnival. I’m so excited about this interview. Another exciting interview with a band doing big things in Durban, non-other than, “Black Math”. “Black Math” is an energetic three piece band that blends garage rock, alternative rock, blues and punk with some dose of cycodelic rock thrown into the mix. Last but not least, I once again have the honour of featuring a gig review of the amazing “Springbok Nude Girls” – what an evening of some brilliant music ! Now we can’t have a Christmas issue without giving away a few prizes and we do just that in Jo’s Corner. Ever heard of BITE ME? Well, BITE Me is a cupcake company run by Rebecca Nicholas and she makes cool designs for delicious cupcakes. You have to check out her work. Not too long ago in a land where musical creativity had become a scarcity, destiny inspired The Monroes. Most closely described as melodic hard rock, characterized by distinct guitar riffs and solos, the compositions creatively flourished. Orchestrated by fate, with an innovative sound, The Monroes are tenaciously dealing a shockingly ever after. Having just recorded their debut album â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Devils Carnivalâ&#x20AC;? we talk to this unique band about the release of their album. Having just moved to U.S.A we find out more about life in America and take a look at what makes them miss good old South Africa. Hope you enjoy the interview

Let’s talk a bit about the history of the band, where did it all start?

Well guys let’s get straight into it - after releasing a 4 track demo, which did very well in S.A, you are about to release your highly anticipated debut album, “The Devils Carnival” what can we expect from the album? Yeah it’s about time dammit!!! You should expect devils, horrific murder mixed with love, child abuse, abortion, and that’s just the first song! he he all jokes aside it’s a depiction of life and how it really is even though nobody looks at it that way. Maybe we’re the crazy ones.

What is your fave song on the Album and why? Would have to say "Toy Orphan" cause it’s a song Ii can relate to, it’s like it just taps into my being. It moves me.

You recently moved to the US, how have the American public taken to you and just how different is the music scene to SA? Well it’s certainly different! It’s an incredible place and the artists here are phenomenal to say the least. The Americans really do know how to entertain and because of that the crowds really do come out and support. The crowds are a very responsive and crazy as hell. Bottles flying everywhere and I do believe I’ve seen one or two dildos taking to the air too! Hahaha! So yeah it’s pretty crazy. What was the question again? Ha-ha

Kenny and Sid. It’s all their fault! Kenny and Sid grew up together and Sid was actually the one who showed Kenny how to play guitar but I’m sure Kenny will say that Sid did a s**t job! Hahaha but yeah they’ve known each other for years now and so I guess it was just a matter of time before they started a band. So they spent about 2 years in a studio to record and write and basically just to find the sound they were looking for. After that they auditioned the rest of the guys, and as they say the rest is history really. One big happy family!

Who have been your inspirations as musicians? Mine changes by the day so it’s hard to say. I know it’s been said so many times by bands, but we all really do have different tastes in music, it’s insane!!!! We have a drummer who can’t stop listening to death metal; we have a singer who is obsessed with the worst instrument in the world. The acoustic guitar ha-ha we have a bassist who actually has some taste thank goodness and we have two guitarists. Well, I don’t think they ever listen to music; they just sit and watch movies the whole day! They say it isn’t p**n but we all know the truth! Ha ha ha! We watch lots of p**n

Having played in South Africa and now also in America where and what venue has been your favourite to play at? That’s a real "no brainer" for us. Without a doubt "Blue Moon" in Nelspruit! We have yet to play at every venue that exists but they’re going to have to be very, very, very, very exceptional to beat them. Even then I’d still do with "Blue Moon" – Thanks, now we miss South-Africa!

Do you get nervous before a gig? Ha ha ha always! It’s the worst feeling in the world but exciting at the same time. After the first song it goes away though. Don’t think the other guys get nervous though. A**holes.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions before you go on stage? No not really hey. I’m not superstitious at all. It’s all poppy cock! Ha ha ha yay! I’ve always wanted to use that in a sentence! Ryan drinks his disgusting tea I know that, and he eats weird s**t. Some say Ryan gets a root from the depths of the Amazon and without this he actually sings exactly like Barry Manilow.

Who is the most responsible person in the band? Klement without a doubt! He should really grow up.

Who is the wildest in the band? Ryan. Always the damn singers hey. He would just go out by himself to a bar and ends up in taxi with 2 girls who are making out - teach me Ryan! I really hate him. We have lost him many times; we actually got him a supply of “glow sticks” so that we can find him in a crowd. This is no joke.

We know it’s on ITunes, Amazon, Spotify and most other online stores. We hope to launch the physical album soon.

As we approach the end of the year and Xmas around the corner, what has been the highlight of your year? Ha ha ha! That’s deep. Well I can’t tell you unfortunately. It’s a bit personal and involves midgets, Jaggermeister and a hot tub but my second highlight would have to be arriving in the USA. Felt incredible walking through those airport doors.

Step 1 : Applied a Primer to her face. Using a Primer is the best way to get your make-up to last. They pamper the skin and create a protective base for longer-lasting, more natural looking foundation application and wear.

Is a popular American musical style that began in the rural Southern United States in the 1920s. It takes its roots from Western cowboy and folk music. Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, fiddles such as violins, and harmonicas.

Step 2: Applied a cream ultra-foundation with a wedge. Tested the colour of foundation on her jawline. It should disappear into the skin and seamlessly between the face and neck. Step 3: Applied dermacolor fixing powder with a powder puff. For a matt finish, I pressed powder into her face with the puff and then brushed over with a powder brush to remove excess.

Step 4: Brushed through her eyebrows with an eyebrow wand to groom them. Step 5: Powder is applied with a slanted eyebrow brush to fill in the scars and gaps. Your eyebrows add strength and definition to your face and frame your eyes, so they should be beautifully groomed.

In the front corner of my eyes, next to my nose I added a little bit of a silver + white shine. A black thick liquid eyeliner is uses around me eyes and mascara, eyeliner inside the eyes is added. Step7: design on my eyes- a music note is drawn sideways on my right eye with a liquid black eyeliner as well as a big music note on my cheek. Step8: cheeks: a light pink with a little bit of light orange and a shine powder. Step 9: lips- red & gloss

Is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. Punk bands created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, strippeddown instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produced recordings and distributed them through informal channels.

Fashion Has been present in the Alternative Community since the birth of punk, we have all like it or not became witness to the subculture of punk rock fashion that soon followed. On his left eye there is a black music note drawn with a black eyeliner.

At first, most breakers dressed for comfort and practicality. Loose-fitting pants (sometimes with suspenders), comfortable sneakers (with the laces left mostly undone) and colorful t-shirts (to go with other members of a dancer's crew) were standard on the East coast. Meanwhile, military-inspired outfits with baggy pants (again, sometimes with suspenders) and lace-up boots were popular with some dancers on the West coast.

BLACK M A T H Black Math are an energetic 3 piece band that blend garage rock, alternative rock, blues and punk with a dose of physcodelic rock thrown in. Featuring Cameron Lofstrand on lead vocals, lead guitar and main music composition; Tyla Burnett on bass and Ntando Mokoena on drums. Theirs is a sound that is in-your-face and ballsy with influences stretching back as far as the sixties - from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin to Nirvana, The White Stripes, Wolf Mother, Arctic Monkeys and the Hives. An essential part of the Black Math experience is their live performance. They have an explosive stage presence and personality that demands attention. They perform with passion and charisma and deliver catchy riffs, bluesy bass lines, inspired lyrics and insane guitar solos. One event organizer described their music :- â&#x20AC;&#x153;when they rock, their music makes the concrete on the walls crumbleâ&#x20AC;?. Interviewed by : Duwyne Clayton

First of all guys thanks for doing this interview. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really awesome featuring you in our Mag? Thank you Sir, for interviewing us and for your interest in our band!

As a band where did it all start for you and whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the story behind Black Math? Tyla: I used to chill at Cameron's house and listen to him playing his guitar. He had a jazz bass guitar lying around that belonged to his uncle. He showed me some basics and we started jamming together. The rest is history. Cam: We came up with a few songs, jamming and just having fun. We felt we needed a drummer to complete the sound we were trying to achieve.

Ntando: Tyla and Cam were jamming in our school's music room, I joined them on drums one day, playing my favourite song ' Hey Joe' by Jimi . They had a gig and they told me to join them. From then on we became a band.

Do you all come from a musical background? Not really....we just simultaneously grew to love music

How would you describe your music? We can't really describe it. We try to be original and keep each song different, basically we just try to make hard, aggressive in your face garage rock.

Tell us about your song writing. What is the process like and where do you find your inspiration? Cameron: Well sometimes I'll come up with an idea, the basic beginnings to a song and some lyrics. Tyla and Ntando will then add their parts to complete and formulate the song while jamming together. There are times when we have come up with something spontaneously while jamming together. It takes each band member's creative input to make each song what it is. It needs no more and no less, three is all we need. We draw inspiration from musicians such as the White Stripes, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.

You have played along some awesome bands such as The Anti Retro Vinyl’s and The Trees just to mention a few. What do you think of Durban’s talent? Ntando: Durban talent is great. Durban bands definitely know what’s happening and there’s such a variety. Bands like Fruit and Veg, no one sounds like they do. People need to support the Durban music scene and it will grow.

Explain a typical band practice for Black Math? Are there any albums or recordings out there or in the future that we can Tyla: Every band practice has to start with a wholesome get our hands on? meal( usually bacon laden foods), we then chill anywhere from 30 minutes up to an hour and round it off with a jam.

Having seen you guys play live before, I can vouch that you put on an awesome live show. Just how important is playing live to you and how much work goes into it? Playing live is important for us as we are trying hard to get our name out there and have our music heard. The music is most important. We put a good amount of work into our shows , most importantly being as energetic as possible on stage. There’s no particular plan, but we always have the intention of going absolutely insane on stage.

If I was someone who has never heard your music, what experience would I get from one of your gigs? Well, we aren't quite sure what you would experience, but we hope that our music will be delivered upon you as a good punch in the face.

Do you have any rituals before going on stage? Tyla: Not particularly, though Cameron and I usually enjoy a good cup of tea before we play.

What do you wish for the future of the band and your music? Well, we hope to play overseas eventually. We hope to just keep doing what we are doing, if we can make a living out of it then that would be a bonus.

Hello Kids!! Hope you are all ready for Christmas time!!! I must say I am not the biggest fan of Christmas these days buuuuuut that does not make me a Grinch ;) Anyway I hope we can all spread the cheer in a less materialistic way and actually help those who are in need of food, clothes and love. FIERY HILL

Fiery Hill is a Rock Christian band that has Punk flavour and even includes rap in their variety of sound. The band consists of Brandon Jooste on vocals and rhythm guitar, Renier Kruger on drums and backing vocals and Fanbaseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very own Duwyne Clayton on bass guitar!!! We are so excited to finally feature his amazing band and it is safe to say that we are all so proud of him and we will always stand by his side! I hope you all love their interview!! <3 xx

How did you come up with the name of your band? We all brought some ideas to the table and we chose Fiery Hill over the Spunk Rockers hahaha On a serious note, we chose Fiery Hill because it sums up what was done for all of us at Calvary. Tell us a bit about each member of the band? Renz initially started as the lead guitarist for the band but moved on to the drums when we became a three piece band. He is also our sound tech. (sorry Terry) lol Brandon is the lead singer/songwriter as well as rhythm guitar for the band. He enjoys bringing in platforms for new songs. D.W: is our laid back bassist and professional chair breaker lol (sorry Colleen) its true he has broken at least two chairs from just sitting on them. He is also the peace maker in the band! How long have you guys been around? We were all friends at school and had the same musical interests as well as influences. Renz and DW started playing music together in their teens. DW went overseas when he finished school. Brandon and Renz got together and played around in their spare time. After a few failed attempts at getting a band off the ground and DW’s return to SA, Fiery Hill was born in October 2010. What is the most interesting thing a fan has ever said to you? Renz: on guitar – good guitaring and on Drumming – good Drumming!!! Yeah!!!! DW “Renz sings”… All in all it’s just another…broken chair on the floor!!! Brandon: Play it Brother! We generally get good feedback from the audience.

Brandon: At a very young age it was the metal scene, Metallica, Pantera and the heavier bands, I think it was the guitar licks that had me interested. I enjoyed the grunge scene as well. I gotta say these days it’s a lot softer, I love Counting Crows, Matchbox Twenty, David Crowder, P.O.D, 12 Stone, Kutless, anything with good chords and meaningful lyrics. Where does your band play gigs? Due to the recording and being a relatively new band we haven’t done many gigs. We have played at JD’s bar on the Bluff a couple of times and done a bit of outreach. We are looking forward to getting out there a lot more once the C.D is done and released. Who is the craziest person in the band? It’s a toss-up, Renz and Brandon have their days, if they are both having one of their days on the same day, then we usually cancel band practice! Haha Who is the craziest person in the band?

Bass Guitarist : D.W What do you all do in your free time? Since we grew up together, we hang out quite a bit, watching rugby, having braais and just socializing and jamming. Going out to gigs. Who inspires your music? Renz: I grew up on Bruce Springsteen, pink Floyd, Cat Stevens, later moved to Pearl Jam, Creed, Audio Slave, Stone Temple Pilots, basically anything with a good tune and words that are cryptic. DW: From an early age it was Nirvana, Pearl Jam, any grunge rock or metal (the heavier the better). As the years went on I’ve enjoyed more subtle bands like counting crows, Tree 63, Just Jinjer, Prime Circle etc. but my music taste varies in so many ways. At the moment I am a huge fan of The Anti Retro Vinyl’s, Kissed by Katie, The Cheap Bad Habits and THRONE

It’s a toss-up, Renz and Brandon have their days, if they are both having one of their days on the same day, then we usually cancel band practice! haha Do you guys have any rituals you do before going on stage? Not really, it’s usually just P & P, prayer and play. DW usually phones his Mom just before the gig. Describe how you feel when you're on stage. How do you think music changes lives? Music is a universal language, which brings people together, moves emotions and sooths the soul. How are you guys going to spread the Christmas cheer this year? What does it take to make it in your industry? This industry has a lot of levels, it takes a lot of hard work, and perseverance, sacrifices and so much patience, just to get to the first level of the industry. The rest of it takes more effort and long nights.

How would you describe your sound? Our sound is exciting, hot, crazy and electrifying! We guarantee you an absolute new experience in music, and guarantee you that you will have goosebumps while you are on the dance floor. That is the best description we can give you about our sound.

Tell us your list of credentials! Where is your favorite place to perform? We are DJs/ music producers and video producers. We create electronic sounds with exciting rhythm and make music videos to give it the final product.

We have been DJn in some huge events and other places but we have to admit that our most favourable place to perform is at Koko's Margate , its where we were discovered and became international DJs.

Why did you want to become a DJ? We always thought we would be somewhere else if we didn't have parents in the music industry we would have probably become a pilot, or doctor or a grocery store packer lol. We love music and not only the dance/electronic genre, we love all types of music. We became DJs because we love to learn all types of music, especially the electronic genre e.g. Electronic house , Dub-step and a new genre circulating the Latin American mainstream called Moombahton (pron. Moom-bah-tin) and of course to entertain the crowd , nothing beats the scream of a crowd that loves your music!

Tell us a little about who you are as people, behind the scenes Basically we’re just kids that love music .Our origins are from Madagascar, we were raised in South Africa. We weren’t exactly popular kids at school and we didn’t have any friends at school, music has always been there for us. We truly found ourselves after school and never looked back; if we did we could've sworn we would get a knuckle sandwich again lol. We love life. You can't take life it as it comes, we influence it and that is how ChiN3gro roles!

Where is your favorite place to go out on the town? We love to go to News Café at Bedfordview, Johannesburg it’s exciting and we meet interesting people all the time. If it's not News then its XL at Margate , GREAT seafood they got there! Who are your inspirations? We were inspired by many but God is our main inspiration in our lives. If He didn’t have a sense of humour where would we be now? In music we were inspired by Dylan H “The King of Dirty house”, Swedish House Mafia , Skrillex , Steve Aoki and Afrojack. Each of these people play a major role in our style of music especially when it comes to producing our own music it’s like mixing double Vodka and Coke with a shot of Tequila to give you that new kick. Do you do anything else besides DJ? Well, I (Papi Murf) usually make music videos for our fan page or manage the fan page, otherwise just chilling watching movies and producing with my brother (Mickathies James) and sleeping, say what you want, sleeping is hard work. I (Mickathies James) usually producing music and hanging with friends and listening to different sounds. If you could say anything to your loyal fans, what would it be ? We love you all (and haters too), if it weren’t for you all, we would be DJn in our bedroom or worse at school functions! Follow your heart , if you are a vampire then that's just too bad! Seriously just have fun all the way, life is too short for any seriousness.

I must admit, I was very excited to do this interview with my Dad. Lamy is an excellent and legendary Comedian who has been in the game for many years. What made you get into comedy?

Tell us a bit about the man behind all the laughter?

Ever since I can remember Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always wanted to entertain people. Acting was my first love but comedy and singing came naturally so I combined them and 39 years later Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still doing it full time.

First and foremost Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a family man who loves cooking, FB, chatting to friends and generally trying to be a good person.

Why do you think it’s important for comedians to be recognized in South Africa? I think we make a difference in everyday life by bringing out the lighter side of issues and subjects that people are too scared to talk about as well as making the audience feel good. Comedy is therapy for the soul and that’s the main reason why comedians should be recognized.

Tell us about some rituals you have on stage? I don’t really have rituals although I like to be alone for at least 5 minutes before the show and I have to have an upright mic stand. I used to smoke about 10 cigarettes before I went on but that’s gone out the window as I no longer have that vice.

Who are your biggest comedic inspirations? Charlie Chaplin was my very first hero as he could make you laugh and cry without even saying a word, to me a genius.

Where is your favorite place to travel? I’ve been to so many places and countries in my life that I don’t have a favorite, as a matter of fact I don’t like traveling that much.

Where can we catch you performing regularly? I’m based in Durban so I’ve been doing my shows every Wednesday for the last nine years at CoCo’s Comedy Lounge in the Umhlanga Sands Hotel .

What are your pet peeves? I dislike people who don’t have a sense of humour as they must lead miserable lives, the government, racists and hypocrites although I can see the funny side in them.

Please tell us a joke!! ;) I bet you get asked this all the time! People always expect a comedian to be funny, what they don’t realize is that it’s what we do for a living and its work. If you’re a plumber I don’t invite you over to my house for a braai so you can fix my pipes. I think that was funny!!!

What is your group on Facebook all about? The group on Facebook called “Lamy SA’s Legend of Lekka Laughter” was actually created by an ex pat now living in New Zealand. I’m very chuffed with it as everyone from all walks of life, are allowed to share their humour. Isn’t that BRILLIANT !!!!

What is your motto in life? Peace and laughter will make you a better person.

Is there anything you would like to say to your loyal fans? Thank you so much for letting me entertain you for so many years, doing what I love most and bringing a smile to you all.

Describe what it feels like when you are able to capture your audience and keep them entertained. Once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve read your audience and capture their attention, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an adrenaline timeless journey of absolute satisfaction. There is nothing better than seeing happy people.

Is there any advice you can give to any up and coming comedians that may read this? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m lucky enough to have inspired a few local comedians, Barry Hilton being one of them. My advice is, you must have a passion for comedy, never panic and timing is your weapon. Stay grounded.

So I take it you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t love me? So I take it you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care? Am I not pretty enough? Do I not dress well enough? Are my nails not up to your standards? Is my job beneath you? Am I beneath you? Is my age really that much of a problem? Are my dreams a bit too far out for your approval? Are the places I go to inferior to your liking? Is my future yours? Am I yours? Who are you beneath your arrogance? Is time against us, or are you? Is my personality almost too similar to yours? Is she really who you want? Am I what you want in your future? Could your promises be based on intoxication? Do I believe them or do I really want to believe them? Could you Love me? All I can ask is if you could please try to just see ME? Is my innocence the issue? Or are you the issue really? Perhaps you are the issue.

“Westlife”

My son Darren is a 21 year old young adult who has Cerebral Palsy, he is hemiplegic and has no functional speech. He is a very sociable young man and absolutely loves music. His favourite band is Westlife and he listens to Westlife every day. In July this year, I saw an advert for a festival taking place in September in Windhoek which would be featuring Westlife. Unfortunately Windhoek was too far for us to go, but I found out that Westlife would be playing in Pretoria as well. I wrote to the organizes of the Festival and asked if it would be possible for Darren to meet the group in Pretoria. After hearing nothing for some time, I received an e-mail from the relevant people saying that the Westlife guys had agreed to meet with Darren and that (in their words), “it would be an absolute pleasure”.

Of course, much excitement ensued and we booked our air tickets to Pretoria, made hotel reservations and hired a car. It was Darren’s first time flying so he was a bit apprehensive but all went well.

We were due to meet the band at 20h00 on the Saturday. We arrived at the concert venue at around 16h00 and listened to all the other bands playing and eventually 20h00 came and we went to our meeting point. The guys were running late, so we eventually got to meet them at 20h40. By this time, Darren was so excited! He had asked me to buy each of the band members a gift and I bought them South African scarves. Shane, Mark, Nicky and Kean came out looking awesome, with Black suits on, looking really cool!

They were so friendly and greeted us and shook hands with Darren and asked

questions about him, shook hands with Darrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brother, Craig and chatted to him as well and also had photos taken. When Darren gave them their gifts, they were so pleased, put the scarves around their necks and admired them and Shane said that they would use them during the show. They were really down to earth and pleased to meet their fans. We stood in the media pit to watch the concert and during the course of their show, they would wave at Darren or give him a thumbs up sign. At the point that they used the SA scarves that Darren had given them, they told the audience how pleased they were to have received them from two of their biggest fans, Darren and Craig and waved at the boys and sang two songs wearing the scarves. Their concert was amazing, they have such good rhythm and relate so well to each other on stage and just look like they are having such fun together. It was so enjoyable. For Darren, it was the best thing ever that he has experienced and it is something that he will remember forever. We made up a photo album of our trip and Darren looks at it all the time with a big smile on his face!

Reaching 1.3 billion people across the globe, Earth Hour is an environmental awareness celebration created and run by WWF International which encourages citizens of the world to make a symbolic gesture by switching off their lights for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30pm. All for an awareness message and commitment towards combating climate change. It is the largest peaceful civil society participation movement the world has ever seen with 1.3 billion people from over 4000 cities in 88 countries from across the globe taking part on the last Saturday of March every year. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switch off and people across the world from all walks of life turn off their lights for the hour with many coming together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common â&#x20AC;&#x201C; our planet. The event began three years ago on the suggestion of a four year old South African girl, to host an Earth Hour picnic where all South Africans of all cultures could celebrate Earth Hour together under the stars. This resulted in the Hermanus Earth Hour Jazz Festival in the beautiful sea-side town of Hermanus, known for its visiting whales and great white shark projects, show casing the exciting jazz roots now growing from the township areas and the implementation of the first youth upliftment in the area.

There is much need for youth upliftment in this area who's economic growth is based on environmental tourism as it has been wracked with the negative impacts of Abelone poaching and alleged Chinese gang involvement leaving the youth in an economically down turned area with poaching, gangs and all that comes with it with this as their only perception of success. The event provides Musicians that perform at the local schools giving messages of hope and motivation within this environmental context. The platform of the event is used to highlight the fantastic jazz that is coming out of the poorer areas from musicians that do not normally have the opportunity towards exposure and networking that this presents to them.

Did someone say “Bubble gum on my boots today?” Wow Burn night club will never be the same again, one of South Africa’s biggest rock acts rocked out so hard that whoever was part of that gig will not forget it any time soon. If only more big acts will come to Durban then we will really be on the map, maybe this is a taste of things to come because I know if I could attend a gig like that again in my lifetime, my life would be complete ☺ When a successful band like “The Nude Girls” come to town, you would consider it an honour to be a support act for the evening, and that is exactly what it was for bands Scarlett Hill and The Anti Retro Vinyl’s. Speaking to Chris Van Reenen (drummer of The Anti Retro Vinyls) before the gig, he said this is like a dream come true for him. Opening up for the Springbok Nude Girls was definitely on his to do list and he was about to make that dream come true. As we both remembered and shared stories of the first time

we saw “ SNG” play or heard their music we could start to feel the excitement of what was about to take place. First up was a band, who in my opinion don’t get enough recognition at this early stage of their career and if they were able to play a bit later that night, they might have pulled in a bigger crowed, but nevertheless they still rocked and really got the night started. Who might that be ? I’m talking about Scarlett Hill. A band destined to do big things in the music scene. Well done boys you guys are awesome!!! And watch out for future issues of Fanbase coz I am going to make it my mission to get them featured in the mag. Next up was a band who, in my opinion was the perfect choice to be a support act for “The Springbok Nude Girls”. There is at least two bands that come to mind that I would want to see open up for Nude Girls and that is “The cheap bad habits” or “The Anti Retro Vinyls, and at least one of those bands was playing, so this just added to my excitement. Greg Allan has such a Rock star persona that he is one of the best front men this country will ever see. He interacts with the crowd so well and really knows how to rock out. Each member of the band “The Anti Retro Vinyls” really know how to play their part to give off a real rock show, with Harry Alan’s unique guitar licks, Carl Van Reenen’s perfect bass lines and backing vocals, and Chris Van Reenen’s insane drumming, this band could easily have been the headline act of the evening and I know they are going to be just as big as The springbok Nude Girls. Well done dudes you guys were insanely good. After what all that rocking out did we had what it took to welcome The springbok Nude Girls on to the stage? As Arno Carstens stepped on the stage to do a bit of sound check you could feel the excitement in the air with the crowd going mad just by him singing 1,2 mic check. As the rest of the members came on and off the stage to get their stuff ready, this huge crowd starts to get impatient urging the band to get on.

Then in true rock star fashion Arno announces they will be back right now, they are just going to down some Jaggermasters quick. Just then you know you’re in for something wild and if you don’t go home with at least a bruise from the mosh pit then you might be disappointed hehe

“The Nude Girls” came, they saw and they conquered!!! Playing all of their well known hits such as Blue eyes, Genie, Little and one of my all time favorites, Bubble gum on my boots today, which is always a crowd pleaser. Their heavy sound and stage performance caused one of the biggest mosh pits I’ve seen with even the women pushing the men just as hard as they got. Well done to Springbok Nnude Girls and to everyone else involved, this was defiantly one of my favorite gigs ever... Long live “The Nudies”

DEWALD VON SOLMS How did you get into photography?

What style of photography do you like?

I have always been an artist, and photography is a brilliant way to live out my artistic nature when I’m not on stage performing somewhere. I started professional photography with my wife in 2003, a way we can spend more productive yet quality time together. We are one of the few couples that love to work together, without killing or strangling one another. Ha ha ha!

I love studio work, you are always in control of everything, well except if you have a 2-3 year old in the studio. Photography is all about lighting, angles and obviously an undeniable understanding of your equipment and its boundaries. I love a challenge and every person I work with has their own little challenges. Doing fun shoots with striking themes are stunning. All people have life stories in their eyes, I love reading these stories.

What camera are you currently using? I’m a Canon man and I still use my old 30d most of the time in the studio, but my 60d goes on location shoots. My favourite lens is the Canon EF70-200is for outdoor shoots and landscapes.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years in terms of your photography? In 5 years I would like to have all the necessary equipment to go into Africa for at least a month to study and capture the fascinating lives of people and animals on our intriguing continent.

What do you like about photography? There are so many things I love about photography, but I Who is your favourite South African think the fact that you can, as a photographer, change photographer and why? the way a model looks at herself by creating an almost Wessel Oosthuizen award winning sports photographer. perfect picture of what they would like to look like with He has devoted his life to his photography, and every different angles, lighting and a little help from shot tells a great story. Photoshop. In other words making art of photography. Taking the picture is just the first step of the artistry of photography. Boosting someone’s self-esteem is priceless!

Describe a day in the life of a photographer? Wow! Are you sure you want to know…..? Well at 06h30 I take my kids to school and when I return I check my diary and then I take my place behind the flat screen of my computer to edit all the recent shoots. About 60% of the day is spent behind the screen editing. We do an average of 6 shoots a week and a lot of time goes into preparing the studio: repainting the infinite wall, painting and designing new backdrops and buying new props for the studio. I hardly get to bed before 23h00. “Shame”

What advice do you have for up and coming photographers? You have to be passionate about your art and secondly never stop learning new tricks to push the boundaries of your equipment. It is great to start by specializing in one type of photography and then later expand your horizons.

Out of your portfolio, give us the one image you’ve taken recently which really blows your mind. This is like asking me to choose which of my children are my favourite, impossible. Every shoot I do has at least 2 – 5 striking shots that capture the essence of the model or theme of the shoot. It’s like an endless search for that perfect shot
