River: The other important lead in Harbin is river. There is a big river called SongHua passing by the city and also has a smaller one called MaJia passing through the whole city. The river has witnessed the glorious of the city. And the primary element in our site is a segment of MaJia River. This point make it become another lead in my project.

Railway: Harbin's railway was built in cooperation with the Soviet Union. The city became increasingly prosperous and wealthy after this cooperation. However, it lost many rights and land at the same time because of a unequal treaty. The railway link the city to Shenyang CIty to the south and Soviet Union to the north. This made Harbin became a very importand transfer agent at that time. Nowadays, our site has a railway precast yard inside it and lead to the main route of the railway. We need to retain it with respect and promote it.

Interoir Design As a public building in cold region, light is most important in winter. I took the courtyard as main lighting well. Thus, these area will be the primary space to design. The landscape should be took into consider at the same time. The left rendering show the courtyard besides cafe. There is a water pool, which has the same shpe of the courtyard, in the yard to play a landscape role. In the up rendering, vistor can pass a glass wall which faced to the bigger courtyard. And there are the cement mixer of the old site. In this area, light/ steel/ concrete all kinds of texture can be feeled at the same time. In the down rendering, I combine the skylight with exibition space. With the regular skylight on the roof, the light can lead visitors go to next exhibition room.

Site

The site is located in a tri-point of Somerville, Cambridge and Boston. According to the historical map of Great Boston area, we can tell that the city is growing rapidly in the past 100 years. But a strange phenomenon is that our site didn't change too much duiring these years. The main reason is the role it played as a freight center of this area. Another reson is that this site is envloped by highways from outside and filled with many railways inside. Our purpose is to design a new city inside this area to meet for the topic architecture in 4th Dimension. It means a city can last for a long period which can meet the changing of demand for decade of years in the future.

Uraban Operating System

The main idea of this concept is to translate the relationship between Building and City into the relationship between Software and Operating System. System, which is superior to software, doesn’t need to update as frequently as software. Thus, the system can maintain a long-term sustainability for decades of years and the software can update freely to meet different demands of the city. This system can help the city sovle waste building junction and meet the change at the same time.

Definition

Layers of Mega Structure

Firstly, on the left is the arial view of residential buildings and blocks in Boston. Why residential buildings? Because residential building depends on utilities more than other kinds of buildings. Besides, it changed more frequently in the past decades because of the development of technology. Thus we should begin with residential buildings. The definition of each part of the Urban Operating System: Software: Different types of buildings. Hardware: Energy collectng device. Since Boston is always cloudy. I take wind as the main energy source Operating System: The medium between them. Sperate them means free them from the limit of the otherone. Thus we can updated each part freely.

Population

Parameter: Population and Distance In the 1st part, I use parametric method to analysis the effect of raiway and highway in the site. Using grasshopper to generate randm, points inide the site and calculate the distance between each point and the cloest railway or highway. Then use this number to control the height of the point and lift it up in a specific number response to this number. These lifted points are the control points of the mega structure which is a framework for the system. In the 2nd part, I use population of surroding block as another parameter to control the size of each unit of the mega structure. The higher the population is, the distance between control points will be closer.

Module

Each unit of the mega strcture is shaped in tri-angular and the function is showed on the right. Each unit has its own software to consum the energy and its own hardware to collect energy.

Mechanism

The operating mechanism is that Operating System module play a role as medium to transfer energy from each hardware to another one. In this case, each module contribute there energy to the whole system. And all of the software in this system share the energy to each other. It means freedom to all of buildings. They don't need to worry about lackness of energy from its own hardware. And at the same time, we could change any harware or software at any time we want.

Section

Modules get their own hardware at the begining phase of the Operating System. With the time past, more and more software will be built and modified or removed...........

30

Section of Module

This section show details about how each module works and how does the energy and freight transfer between software and hardware.
