Welcome from the Chairs Eric Wu

Chair of FanimeCon 2019 The Chair team, composed of Claudia, Evan, Alicia, and myself, welcome you to FanimeCon 2019! We kick off this special year with the theme “Silver Celebration.” For 25 years we have come together to build a community that plays together and supports each other. In this quarter-century, Fans have gathered as both attendees and staff to build a convention that not only provides a venue for us to be ourselves, but also educates others about the anime and manga culture. We look forward to sharing an unforgettable weekend with you!

I have been asking myself one question throughout this year — what is a milestone? A milestone is definitely an opportunity to look back and see how far we have come, but at the same time a milestone is simply one point of many on a long journey. We have come a long way from our humble roots and I am excited to celebrate our many accomplishments. I know that the FanimeCon fans are still brimming with untapped potential waiting to be unleashed, and I hope that together we can see what our destinies have in store for us. FanimeCon has and will always live by the creed of “By Fans, For Fans.” Over a thousand pairs of hands join together to make this event happen. I have an overwhelming appreciation for my fellow FanimeCon Staffers, and hope that you join me in thanking them for their dedication, commitment, and devotion to ensuring you have the best experience possible. Remember, you are us and we are you. Please join us in dreaming the future possibilities of this great community!

Claudia Tseng

Vice-Chair of FanimeCon 2019 Greetings and welcome to FanimeCon 2019! For those of you enjoying another year of FanimeCon, thank you for coming and supporting us! If this is your first FanimeCon, we welcome you and hope you enjoy this 25 years young convention! To all of the FanimeCon staff, I thank you for all of the hard work you have put in to this convention.

Yes, this year we’re celebrating our Silver Anniversary! FanimeCon’s start predates the first year I started staffing in Registration. Things were, of

2

By Fans, For Fans

course, much different then. With only a couple thousand attendees, we were still very much a small con in Northern California. With growth comes challenges, and this year was no exception. We wanted to go big for our Silver Anniversary and so Silver Island was born. It is very much a new avenue for us where we explore adult-oriented programming. For our younger night owls, we didn’t forget about you! There will be many new things in the Gaming Hall for you to enjoy. We are undoubtedly doing a lot of new things this year that will challenge us in new ways. We are looking forward to it as a way to continue growing our FanimeCon community, and we hope that you enjoy the changes we have in store for you this year!

Evan James IV

Vice-Chair of FanimeCon 2019 It’s time to celebrate! I may have only been a part of FanimeCon for a little over a decade now, but FanimeCon is celebrating its 25th year! With each passing season, the convention has adapted, grown, and evolved to better serve the fan community. We strive each and every year to do our best to put on an experience that both fosters connections and creates positive lasting memories for our attendees and fellow fans. You are why we strive to do what we do, and 25 years is a testament to the love and support all of you have shown us in return.

As part of our evolution and Silver Anniversary, we are launching a brand new experience: Silver Island at the DoubleTree. This venue will be fully focused on our 18 and over crowd Friday through Sunday, 8:00 pm to 2:00 am. From awesome new programming on the Stage of Stars to a variety of adult video, gaming, and shopping, Silver Island’s first year is something we are truly excited to premiere! We sincerely thank you for joining us on our journey thus far, and as we look forward to the next 25 years we are excited to see where this crazy ride will take us.

Alicia Chow

Vice-Chair of FanimeCon 2019 Welcome to our 25th Anniversary Silver Celebration! We are old enough to do things now! We can rent a car without our parents, we can volunteer for the U.N., pay for our own health insurance, and many more things! Joking aside, we have a lot of exciting events planned for this year and we’re thrilled for everyone to come have fun with us!

Good news, everyone! After a short hiatus, we’re bringing back the Art Gallery! It will showcase past artwork, guidebooks, legacy stories from staff, and other various FanimeCon memorabilia. For anyone who wants to see what FanimeCon was like throughout the years, or just wants to feel nostalgic, you should definitely stop by. This year was my first as part of the FanimeCon Chair Team, and I hope to make our fans proud! The staff has worked really hard this year, and we’re excited to share all of the things that we have planned with you!

CSI

Convention Safety Initiative

Over the years, FanimeCon has grown substantially from small anime club roots to one of the largest anime conventions in North America. Along the way, we’ve experienced growing pains like any other convention or event. The staff of FanimeCon has worked diligently to always provide a safe and welcoming environment for all our members. So, in the interest of further promoting safety for the FanimeCon community, access to the second floor of the convention will require a FanimeCon badge at all times. Access to the first floor will also require a FanimeCon Badge overnight between the hours of 8:00 pm and 5:00 am. These traffic and access changes will still be new to many of our members, but we kindly request your continued patience and wholeheartedly welcome any and all feedback as we continue to develop and implement this initiative. Our primary goal has always been and will continue to be to facilitate as safe an environment as possible. With CSI, we hope to work towards continuing and improving on that mission. So again, thank you all, and we hope you have an amazing and safe time at FanimeCon!

If you’ve lost something, please stop by and describe it to us. With any luck, someone’s turned it in! Note: Please be patient when trying to track down something you’ve lost. Many people who find a lost item or badge turn it in when they have a chance, which is not always right when they find it or when you’ve lost it.

All Lost & Found items are held for a three month period after the convention, after which they are then turned over to the San Jose Convention Center. To contact Lost & Found after the convention, email lost@fanime. com. Please do not email us during the convention, as it will not be received!

Convention Etiquette Photographs

Everyone enjoys photos at a convention, but no one appreciates having their picture taken by surprise! Ask permission beforehand to ensure the highest quality photographs. Remember to be considerate and never block traffic. Convention traffic is a terrible background, and it's hard to take a nice shot when people walk into your photo, or bump into you or your subject. Keep FanimeCon safe and take wonderful pictures!

Autographs

Every year, FanimeCon hosts Guests of Honor and every year FanimeCon attendees wish to obtain their autographs. That’s why FanimeCon has designated a special area for you to gain those cherished memories. The schedule (found online and in your Pocket Guide!) will have the times and places where our Guests of Honor will sign autographs, so be sure to check it when planning your FanimeCon experience. Remember, these people are our guests and should be treated with respect. Kindness and smiles go a long way! Have fun and enjoy your time with this year’s Guests of Honor! Please check our updated Autographs policies online.

In Honor of Monkey Punch – Anime Screenings

Legendary Lupin III manga creator Monkey Punch (real name: Kazuhiko Kato) died on April 11, 2019 due to pneumonia at the age of 81. Born in Hamanaka, Hokkaido in 1937, he made his name known debuting in Nyumon Futabasha's Manga Story Magazine in 1965. His iconic series Lupin III was featured in 1967 in the same magazine. Due to the high demand of the series, the first Lupin III television anime premiered in 1971. The franchise series that took the county by storm has since inspired numerous television anime and films, as well as live-action works and games. Starting in the 1980s, Monkey Punch received honors from his fellow peers such as Comic-Con International's Inkpot Award, Romics' Golden

Romics, the Association of Media in Digital (AMD) Awards' Meritorious Service Award, and Tokyo Anime Award Festival's Meritorious Service Award. In the past couple of years, Monkey Punch had advanced his craft by learning 3D art using CGI, and spoke as a guest lecturer for manga production at major universities. Please come and join FanimeCon as we show our love and respect for this legendary creator by showing his work throughout the weekend.

Video games that are some of the most frustrating, buggy, and hated games in history. Be sure to stop by and partake in this celebration of humor and all things retro-gaming!

Remembering the Past with the Nostalgia Critic

Along with 5 Second Movies, The Nostalgia Critic is the most popular video series created by Walker, in which he plays the titular Nostalgia Critic, a grumpy and easily aggravated character who mostly reviews entertainment from the 1980s and 1990s. His catch-phrase, “I’m the Nostalgia Critic. I remember it, so you don’t have to,” usually opens and ends each video. Not all reviews are negative, such as the reviews of Double Dare and Gargoyles. He also does “Top 11 Countdowns” and “Old vs. New” comparisons between two movies that share source material.

The Best of Zero Punctuation

Zero Punctuation is The Escapist’s groundbreaking video review series starring Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw. Every Wednesday, Zero Punctuation picks apart the games so you don’t have to! Called “hilariously cutting…the first legitimate breakout hit from the gaming community in recent memory” (by Boing Boing), join us for this presentation and see why gamers love Zero Punctuation and developers fear it!

Video Game Movies

Many video games these days have enough in-game cinematics to be considered movies (Cowboy Bebop: The Song Remains the Same, God of War 2018, Dead Fantasy, Sony’s Spiderman 2018, etc.) We take some of the best video game cutscenes/cinematics and show them as if they were a movie (with gameplay intelligently mixed in). Come join us for these memorable moments in gaming!

made it blows your mind and makes you wonder why Hollywood hasn’t made something like this yet. Will we see unauthorized something-Rangers? Maybe The Apprentice, or will Kung Fury tell us he’s a cop? Come in and witness what came from beyond the net.

Abridged Series Screenings

Following the satire and comedy tradition of Mystery Science Theater 3000, these anime abridged shows hold nothing sacred as they poke at plot holes and have a good laugh. First proposed by our attendees, FanimeCon introduced this room a few years ago and we have never looked back! We welcome you to join us in watching these fan-made parodies, which are often the most ridiculous things you could ever imagine from your favorite shows! So pull up a chair and prepare to bust a gut!

Classic Anime Hell

Come and see a classic screening from the past depths of Anime Hell. Will you see Forklift Driver Klaus – The First Day on the Job? Will Hard Gay make an appearance or will he be rejected by Don Hertzfeldt? Well, you’ll just have to come on in to the mouth of madness to see...

Anime Hell

Anime Hell is a free-form video presentation featuring short film clips, commercials, failed pilots, amateur films, found video, instructional and educational films, music videos, and film trailers from Japan and elsewhere. Unfunny cable TV clip shows cannot compare to the live group fun of Anime Hell!

Midnight Madness

Some otaku hear voices…

Voices that say something completely different… Sometimes, they do what the voices say… Welcome to the twisted bizarro-world of fan-made parodies: an altered state in which pimps orchestrate Armageddon by pop music, dwarves sell life insurance to witches, and ninjas do “the Macarena.” Can you stand the shocking goof that is Midnight Madness? Or will you keel over in
