Letter from the Director
On behalf of the University of Georgia and the faculty, staff and students of the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, I want to welcome you to the 2022 Community Leadership Conference! Thank you for attending our conference, albeit virtually this year. Over the last two years, leaders have grappled with a global pandemic and any number of events and challenges that have significantly altered the way we work, communicate and collaborate. The changes we have experienced (and those we know are coming) require leaders to be attuned to what is taking place and to equip themselves with new skills to lead the way forward in their communities, businesses and organizations. Today’s conference will highlight some of the changing trends and topics shaping community leadership development, and I hope you will be empowered to apply what you learn today in your own programs. Also, we are recognizing Leadership Clayton with the Innovations in Community Leadership Award. Administered through an advisory board and the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Clayton worked alongside Fanning Institute faculty during 2021 to re-energize its adult leadership program. The Leadership Clayton program now includes workshops on inclusivity, multigenerational leadership and collaboration with the purpose of building a pipeline of leaders in Clayton County who understand the critical issues facing the community and have the skills to become actively involved in tackling those issues. Since 1982, the Fanning Institute has worked throughout Georgia to strengthen communities and organizations through leadership development, training and education. As a unit of the Office of Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia, the Fanning Institute is committed to developing leaders of all ages, in every community, from all walks of life. This conference represents one way the Fanning Institute is fulfilling its leadership development mission. This conference would not be possible without the contributions and efforts of many volunteers. I want to thank members of our planning committee, our sponsors, community partners, the Fanning Institute Advisory Board and the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach for all of their support in implementing the conference. The efforts of so many have resulted in a wonderful conference with multiple opportunities to learn and grow. Once again, welcome to the 2022 Community Leadership Conference! Sincerely,
Matthew L. Bishop, Ph.D. Director J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development

By popular demand, this year’s conference will feature an opportunity for you to connect with fellow attendees in a structured networking environment. Choose from one of four rooms to network, share notes, and discuss experiences or “aha!” moments. Networking rooms will be organized around topics and themes from the conference: (1) Demographic shifts and trends; (2) Intergenerational leadership; (3) High Potential Leaders programming; and (4) Open discussion for general program development. All rooms and conversations will be facilitated by a Fanning Institute faculty member who will get the conversation going and keep it flowing.

Innovations in Community Leadership Award This year, the Fanning Institute is honored to recognize Leadership Clayton as the winners of the 2022 Innovations in Community Leadership Award. Utilizing our Community Leadership Program curriculum, Leadership Clayton re-energized its adult leadership program in 2021. Focused on developing leaders with an increased involvement in Clayton County, graduates develop an understanding of critical issues facing the community, gain knowledge to enhance their leadership skills, and learn to apply those skills in becoming involved in making a difference. Combining leadership skills development in areas such as facilitating difficult conversations, multigenerational leadership, collaboration, group decision making, and understanding leadership with a focus on community awareness, Leadership Clayton exemplifies how a wellbalanced leadership program can lay a foundation to build a stronger community.
Leadership Clayton accepting the Innovations in Community Leadership Award In 2017, the Fanning Institute established the Innovations in Community Leadership Award to recognize individuals or programs who have moved beyond traditional community leadership programming through innovative practices, partnerships and activities that better serve participants and their communities. When selecting the award recipient, several criteria – including need, creativity, implementation and impact – are taken into account. Granting this award showcases these innovations and the dedicated leaders who strive to make their communities stronger. With the inaugural Innovations in Community Leadership Award in 2017, the Fanning Institute recognized Moultrie businessman Roy Reeves for his decades of public service in Colquitt County, including helping launch the UGA Archway Partnership. In 2018, the institute presented the award to the Middle Georgia Regional Commission and its Middle Georgia Regional Leadership Champions program, which seeks to build regional success in middle Georgia through leadership development. The 2019 award recipient was the Lynda Brannen Williamson Foundation for its work in establishing and supporting an annual women’s leadership academy in southeast Georgia. In 2020, the award went to Walnut Grove High School for its development of a student leadership program that utilizes a multi-phased, comprehensive leadership development approach that has improved student achievement and school climate. Last year, we recognized the late Superior Count Judge Horace J. Johnson, Jr. with the award for his commitment to public service and making a difference in his hometown of Newton County.

Workshops WORKSHOP SESSION I
Bridging the Gap in Multigenerational Communities Lauren Healey, Public Service Faculty, J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development Five generations of Georgians are now living and working together in our communities. For the first time in history, Millennials – adults between 23 to 38 years old – have surpassed Generation X and Baby Boomers as the largest share of the American workforce. This shift in demographics presents many challenges, but also exciting opportunities. Each generational group has unique experiences and events that affect their community engagement. Understanding how experiences shape who we are is the first step in recognizing the possibilities that exist in the multigenerational environment.

This session will focus on examples from leadership development programs that have been intentional in recruiting a diverse mix of participants. The challenges of unearthing diverse members of communities can seem impossible at times. Some communities find that they are flooded with potential candidates. Other communities simply do not have the diverse resources of ethnicities or a wide range of social and economic zip codes to pull from. The panelists will discuss the importance looking through a DEI lens when reviewing potential applicants. Participants will also have time to ask questions of the panelists that represent a variety of programs.

Navigating Through Change: Adaptive Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector Maritza Soto Keen, Public Service Faculty, J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development Jill Helme, AthFest Educates, Executive Director; Athens, Ga. Kara Holland, Hearts and Hands Clinic, Executive Director; Statesboro, Ga. Santiago Marquez, Latin American Association, CEO; Atlanta, Ga. In this session, we will discuss how adaptive challenges differ from technical ones and how one can use adaptive practices to respond to change. Organizational leaders will share their experiences in leading their nonprofits through change and how they used adaptive skills to lead through challenging times. The three nonprofit leaders will conduct a panel discussion facilitated by Fanning faculty.
Implementing a leadership development program in a metropolitan area comes with a unique set of challenges. Rapid growth, shifting corporate landscapes, and the need to stay relevant in a crowded field make it imperative that programming remains fresh and innovative. Panelists in this session will share the various strategies they have employed to address these sticky issues and more.

Fanning Institute for Leadership Development Lori Tiller, Public Service Faculty, J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development Events of the past few years and dynamics like the “new normal” have reshaped virtually all aspects of our society from how we interact and conduct business to how we develop leaders. Remaining relevant and current requires community leadership program coordinators and sponsors to adapt and rework their program’s goals, objectives and activities. Through new and innovative content areas such as vertical leadership; systems thinking; diversity, equity, and inclusion; conflict transformation; adaptive leadership; and collective impact, effective programs are empowering graduates to lead communities forward into the future. Join us as we hear from a panel of experts as they discuss these emerging trends in community leadership development.
