We introduce materials, processes and techniques so students develop skill and confidence using traditional methods and become experts in the development and communication of images and ideas through emerging technology. Our graduates are creative, capable and ready for their chosen industries.

Careers in

Design Bachelor of Applied Arts (Integrated Land Planning Technologies) – a four-year Bachelor Degree with three paid co-op work terms for students interested in how land and buildings are brought into development in a way that respects nature and builds cost-effective and efficient sustainable communities. You’ll study landscape design and urban and regional planning as well as the principles of engineering and architecture. Industry standard software, including geographic information systems (GIS), CAD, 3-D modeling, remote sensing, spatial analysis and digital imaging/videography are used. Theoretical studies in aesthetics, sociology, economics, ecology, civics and history will also be offered. Graduates work in government, for firms specializing in urban and regional planning, as consultants for land development, or with landscape architecture companies in technical or supervisory roles.

Fashion Design – a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma co-op program. Supported by a faculty team with a passion for the fashion industry, Fanshawe College is a studentfocused organization dedicated to supporting and nurturing emerging Canadian fashion designers. Through education and guidance, students develop their creative design skills, apparel production technologies, visual communications and business marketing skills in order to prepare for a future in the various sectors of the rapidly changing global fashion industry. Graduates work as designers, pattern makers, product developers, fit technicians, quality control technicians, wardrobe technologists or CAD technologists in companies such as Danier Leather, Lida Baday, Kersh, Westbeach and the Stratford Theatre.

Fashion Merchandising – a two-year Ontario College Diploma co-op program that includes all aspects of visual merchandising, marketing, promotion, and fashion buying as well as extensive use of industry software. Courses also cover retail management, brand development, textile technology, photo styling, event/fashion show production, and fashion technology. Graduates find employment as retail managers, visual merchandisers, line/brand representatives and marketers of products and services.

GIS and Urban Planning – a two-year Ontario College Diploma co-op program for people with an interest in designing new residential communities and planning improvements for existing communities, as well as commercial and industrial districts. Focus is placed on conserving natural environments and preserving cultural heritage environments. Three leading computer applications are used in the program as tools to carry out sound urban and rural planning: Computer Aided Design (2D and 3D), Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and Graphics Presentation. Comprehensive project portfolios are developed by each student. Land use planning studies, land development projects, building and maintaining spatial and tabular databases, designing plans of subdivisions, downtown revitalization, infill and intensification cases, and natural and cultural heritage projects are examined and carried out within the context of seeking sustainable development and urbanization. Co-op students and graduates find well-paying and satisfying positions with land development companies, government planning departments (municipal and provincial), and urban planning, engineering, and architectural consultants.

Graphic Design – a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program. The Graphic Design program curriculum develops and strengthens student’s skills in objective creativity, design process, targeted visual communication problem solving, illustration, typography, fundamentals of motion graphics, website development and business communication skills; instructing in both traditional and digital technology. Students have 24/7 access to the program’s state-of-the-art digital environment using standard industry technology: Apple, Adobe, Microsoft. Graduates enjoy successful careers in advertising agencies, design studios, corporate in-house art departments, publishing, sign companies, web development companies and commercial printers.

Horticulture Technician – a two-year Ontario College Diploma co-op program which trains students to design, build and maintain landscapes, gardens and indoor spaces in residential, commercial, institutional and recreational areas. Courses include: plant identification, arboriculture, landscape materials, field construction, equipment maintenance, business management, landscape design and plant production. Graduates enjoy careers in design-build firms, plant nurseries and greenhouses, golf courses, garden centres, landscape installation companies, park boards, botanical gardens and government agencies. The horticulture industry is looking for approximately 1,600 skilled people a year. Grow your future by enrolling in an industry that is creative and environmentally sustainable with fantastic job prospects.


Interior Decorating – a two-year Ontario College Diploma co-op program for students interested in decorating and design in the residential market. Decorating professionals solve planning and décor challenges using creativity, sound design principles, and knowledge of decorating materials and products. In hands-on studio classes, you’ll learn the fundamentals of interior decorating, including space planning, colour theory, material selection and visual merchandising, as well as build interpersonal communication, sales, business and marketing skills. You’ll work with computerassisted design (CAD) software to develop your designs for both presentation and specification. Graduates find employment as retail or showroom consultants with decorating firms, home-builders, and kitchen design/build firms or in visual merchandising or product representation. Many students have future plans to pursue self-employment in their own retail or consulting business.

Interior Design – three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma co-op program for people with a desire to create exciting spaces. Interior designers plan and detail houses, businesses, restaurants, hotels, banks, theatres and other commercial and institutional facilities. Interior designers protect the health and welfare of the public by following the requirements of the Ontario Building Code and addressing environmental issues. Courses include sketching, drafting, illustrating and computer-assisted design (CAD) that develop student skills through the completion of design presentation packages and sets of full working drawings used in construction. Studio classes allow for the proper application of the elements and principles of design through analyzing, space planning, three-dimensional development, model building and experiments with colour, volumes of space, ergonomics, building materials, finishes, millworking and furniture. Graduates work with interior design firms, architects, facilities planners, furniture manufacturers and distributors and as buyers or entrepreneurs.

Landscape Design – a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma co-op program. Landscape designers create attractive and practical open spaces in residential, commercial and recreational areas. They plan the location of structures, roads, pathways, trees, shrubs, flower beds and decorative features such as fountains, ponds and statues. You’ll learn to survey and analyze sites and select appropriate vegetation and landscape materials. You’ll also learn software to create detailed site plans and take related courses in design theory, plant identification, landscape and building materials and technologies. Graduates work for residential and commercial property developers, municipalities, landscape architects, design-build firms and nurseries, in sales or as self-employed landscape consultants.

Graduate Certificate Program Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – this one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program, completed in eight intensive months, will prepare students for employment in a wide range of landbased industries that utilize spatial and tabular data. This program is project-based, software intensive, inter-disciplinary and focused on building flexible, current, high-end applied skills. You will gain mastery of foundational GIS skills and apply leading-edge techniques in GIS science to create spatial solutions. Our graduates work as GIS application specialists, GIS programmer analysts, GIS analysts, or related occupations in both public and private sectors.


Apprenticeship Program Apprenticeship programs require an employer/sponsor. The employer must register the apprentice with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities at 217 York St., Suite 201, London, Ontario, N6A 5P9, 519-675-7788. A typical apprentice might require 600 to 700 hours of classroom time (an eight or ten week block of time each year for three years). This format is called ‘block release’.

Horticulture Technician Apprentice (block release) – the Horticulture Apprenticeship program is on-the-job training: candidates spend 90% of their time working and acquiring their required skill set through their employers. This is supplemented by two in-class training sessions of twelve weeks. Both levels run from December to the end of February each year using state of the art horticultural facilities. Your apprenticeship skills and certification will allow you to earn an excellent wage, start your own business or continue your post-secondary education in the Horticulture Technician Program.
