If you’re starting without a lot of experience under your belt, consider our Human Services Foundation Certificate program. It’s a great way to learn about all areas of the Human Services sectors.

Careers in

Human Services Bachelor of Applied Arts (Early Childhood Leadership) – this four-year baccalaureate program includes studies in early childhood education, program implementation, and the diverse and changing impacts upon these areas, while developing the leadership skills necessary for the future. Applied learning in case studies, research, field placements and one fourteen-week work term prepares graduates to guide and lead curriculum and pedagogy in Ontario’s early childhood settings, other family support programs and early intervention services. The fourth year integrates capstone courses with the opportunity to assimilate knowledge in the field and further develop a skill set to foster and guide quality improvements in early childhood environments. Graduates will be prepared to move into supervisory/director positions in a full range of early childhood programs.

Child and Youth Worker – is a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program offered in London and Woodstock. Not all youth make it through childhood and adolescence with success. As a child and youth worker, you can make a difference by providing care and treatment for troubled children, adolescents and their families. Courses include: child growth and development, child welfare legislation, case management, family issues, as well as art and play therapy. Graduates work in group homes, correctional services, residential treatment centres, children’s aid societies, boards of education, and hospitals. This program is offered full-time, with some part-time seats available, as well as support for part-time studies in Continuing Education.

Child and Youth Worker (Fast Track) – is a 16-month Ontario College Advanced Diploma program offered in London with a May start date. Not all youth make it through childhood and adolescence with success. As a child and youth worker, you can make a difference by providing care and treatment for troubled children, adolescents and their families. Courses include: child growth and development, counseling, professional practice, as well as family issues. Graduates work in residential treatment centres, children’s aid societies, correctional services, boards of education, and hospitals. This program is offered full-time and part-time (during the day, space permitting).

Developmental Services Worker – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program offered in London. The Developmental Services Worker program prepares its graduates to be specialists in supporting children and adults with developmental disabilities. For example, DSW’s provide support for people with intellectual and physical disabilities and autism. The DSW program includes areas of study such as disability, mental health, interpersonal skills, counselling, health, pharmacology, and teaching and intervention strategies. The DSW program has three field placements in community agencies. Graduates are employed as support workers, advocates and educational assistants by agencies providing accommodation, leisure and employment support as well as by boards of education. The DSW program is offered full-time and part-time during the day. This program is also offered as a multiple intake accelerated program at the James N. Allan Campus in Simcoe. The DSW courses are available in the evening through Continuing Education.

Developmental Services Worker (Fast Track) – a 10-month Ontario College Diploma program offered in London. The Developmental Services Worker (Fast Track) program prepares its graduates to be specialists in supporting children and adults with developmental disabilities. For example, DSW’s provide support for people with intellectual and physical disabilities and autism. The DSW program includes areas of study such as disability, mental health, interpersonal skills, counseling, health, pharmacology, and teaching and intervention strategies. Field placements in community agencies and/or schools are part of the curriculum. The Developmental Services Worker (Fast Track) program provides an opportunity for college graduates (Human Services) and university graduates (Social Sciences) or those with a combination of education and work experience in a related field to complete the Developmental Services Worker Ontario College Diploma.

Early Childhood Education – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program that integrates theory child development as the foundation for best practice in Early Development and Learning Programs. Through course work and field practicum, students will develop their knowledge and professional skills with children, families and community partners. Graduates will have the required expertise, skills and attributes to work in a diverse range of educational, community and family support settings and to become a professional registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators.


Human Services Foundation

Recreation and Leisure Services

– a one-year Ontario College Certificate program. This preparatory program provides a broad education in understanding human behaviour and serves as a foundation to prepare you to enter a career program in human services. Courses include Preparation for Helping, Special Populations, Issues in Human Services, Health Issues and Introductory Psychology and Sociology. There is a field placement with an agency. The Human Services Foundation program is an excellent way to establish a record of post-secondary success in preparation for a career in the Human Services career programs. Completion of this program does not guarantee admission into the Human Services career programs, however, will give you additional consideration.

– a two-year Ontario College Diploma program committed to developing leadership skills that can support the creation of positive Recreation and Leisure Programs for Individuals and Communities. Professionals in the field work with all ages in a variety of settings. Graduates work in such agencies as: Seniors’ Centres; YM/YWCA; Municipal Recreation Departments; Private Agencies such as Camps, Parks and Sports Facilities; Correctional Institutions; and Resorts. They also work with Special Event Organizations that plan and implement Athletic Games/Competitions and other Events. Areas of study in the program include: Community Recreation, Program Planning, Inclusive Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Leadership and Group Development, Parks and Facility Operation, Special Events and the Environment. This program is offered full-time, with some part-time seats available. Join the team that takes fun seriously and makes an impact on the quality of life in our communities.

Police Foundations – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program offered in London with a September and January intake. This program is also offered as a 48-week accelerated program at the Woodstock Campus. If you’re interested in public law enforcement or in a career as a police officer, this program offers excellent pre-employment academic instruction. You’ll study the theory of human relations, combined with practical aspects and applications of law enforcement, police powers, community policing and investigation. The program will prepare you to compete within the Ontario Constable Selection System for employment in public law enforcement or related careers. This program is offered full-time at the London campus. It may also be completed parttime during the day, evening or online through Continuing Education.

Protection, Security and Investigation – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program designed for people who would like to work in private or public security or within the criminal justice system. This program concentrates on legal liability, loss prevention, risk-management and corporate and commercial security. Graduates of the Protection, Security and Investigation program will also learn skills and attitudes for working in the criminal justice system, including job opportunities as correctional officers, border services officers, store investigators or loss control officers, security and safety officers, customs officers, retail security, or as police officers. (Please note: The first year of this program is common with the Police Foundations program).

Social Service Worker – a two-year Ontario College Diploma program (offered in London and Simcoe). If you’d like to work with individuals, groups or families and adults who are facing personal challenges, this program could be for you. The program will give you a sound knowledge of human behaviour, individual and social problems and the necessary helping techniques to prepare you for basic social work practice in social agencies and social welfare programs. Graduates are eligible for admission into the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. This program is offered full-time, with some part-time seats available.

Social Service Worker (Fast Track) – a 10-month Ontario College Diploma. If you have a Human Services Diploma or a University Degree in Psychology, Sociology, (or Social Work related), you may qualify for the Social Service Worker Fast-Track option. Graduates earn the same diploma as the two-year program and are eligible for admission into the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. This program will prepare for social work practice and you will have the skills to work in social agencies. If you like to work with individuals, groups or families who are facing personal challenges, this program could be for you.

Graduate Certificate Program Autism and Behavioural Science – in this one-year Ontario Graduate Certificate program you’ll develop advanced knowledge of autism, and awareness of effective intervention techniques via two field placements and academic study. Graduates have an expertise in autism and behavioural science within the children’s sector and are able to select from a range of career opportunities in autism and children’s services including, instructor therapist, private provider of Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI), and autism specialist in a service agency or school board.


Apprenticeship Programs Apprenticeship programs require an employer/sponsor. The employer must register the apprentice with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities at 217 York St., Suite 201, London, Ontario, N6A 5P9, 519-675-7788. A typical apprentice might require 600 to 700 hours of classroom time (an eight or ten week block of time each year for three years). This format is called ‘block release’.

Developmental Services Worker Apprenticeship (part-time day)

Early Childhood Educator Apprentice (part-time evenings)

– the Developmental Services Worker Apprenticeship program prepares graduates to support children and adults with developmental disabilities. Courses focus on disabilities, mental health, interpersonal skills, counselling, health, pharmacology, teaching and intervention strategies. This program provides an opportunity for people already working in the field of Developmental Services to complete a Developmental Services Worker Certificate of Apprenticeship. Courses are offered on a part-time basis, during the day, Some courses are offered both in the classroom and self-directed learning. Upon completion of the Developmental Services Worker Apprenticeship program, there is a bridging program to the Developmental Services Worker Diploma.

– the Early Childhood Educator Apprentice program is designed for individuals who are working part-time or full-time in an Early Childhood Education setting, and want to obtain their Early Childhood Education Ontario Certificate.
