Renovation of PISCINA MIRABILIS

Architecture, old and new, define a city's skyline and have a lasting impact on our perceptual memory of a place. While historic buildings have their own charms, there is no doubt that, at their best, modern buildings have the power to inspire. But in fact, it's better to draw inspiration from history and culture. When these two worlds, old and new, come together, the results can be stunning.

02

In this portfolio, I would like to espress my observation of the relationship between history and culture, the preservation and continuation of historic architectural relics, as well as responding to the accumulation of the past with a contemporary design language.

ROAMING OF AQUEDUCT Renovation of PISCINA MIRABILIS

[Location] Bacoli(Naples) , Italy [Type] Re-use the Roman Ruin [Duration] September 2021 - December 2021 [Team make] Fanyu Gao, Yanping He [Tutor] Li Zhihui

Piscina Mirabilis is a Roman reservoir built by Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD,inorder to feed with drinking water the headquarter of his western Mediterranean war fleet. It was dug out a tuff hill, and it is based on a regular grid of pillars and arcs, with vaulted ceilings. This site are asked to reuse this space as a Contemporary Art Museum. To bring life back inside one of the most important reservoirs of the ancient world. Establish a dialogue between the past and the present. I imagine the whole swimming pool as a new museum, a space dedicated to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. The design concept of the project is to use circles of different scales to break the homogeneous space between columns. The museum design includes an accurate exhibition path for tourists to experience the swimming pool space, bookstore, bar / restaurant area at the end of the course and conference space for tourists. These spaces are available in winter and summer. There is a reception area in the upper part of the swimming pool. The lower part is designed with toilet (2m + 2f) and administrative office (3 people). The ramp designed by the project allows visitors to perceive the reservoir space at different heights. I selected the works of several artists and displayed their works in the space.

This image of The Piscina Mirabilis, ancient Roman cistern, 1st century BC, Bacoli, Campania, Italy, engraving by Giovanni Volpato from a drawing by Natali, from Antichita di Pozzuoli - Puteolanae antiquitates, by Paolo Antonio Paoli, plat 61, 1768, Naples.

Water was pumped out of the cistern using machines placed on the roof terrace of the cistern, which were increased in the 2nd c. AD by adding a series of supporting barrelvaulted rooms on the north side. The ancient cistern is currently in private hands, but it may be visited by the public.

Pr

The Piscina Mirabilis was probably constructed between 33 and 12B.C. as the terminal reservoir of the Augustan aqueduct Serino-Napolis- Misenum. The main channel of the Serino aqueduct in its route toward Naples and Miseno was approximately 96 km long and had 7 main branches to towns along its trace such as Nola, Pompeii, Acerra, Herculaneum, Atella, Pausillipon, Nisida, Puteoli, Cumae and Baiae. The length from Naplesto Miseno was around 18 km. Since the total length of all the branches was approximately 49 km, the Serino aqueduct complex had a length of around 145 km and therefore it should be considered the largest aqueduct system in the Roman world. Piscina Mirabilis is in the Municipality of Bacoli, close to Lake Miseno (the ancient Misenum), over a hill which faces the Bay of Naples. It was realized during the Augustan Age. During the war with Pompeius, in fact, the son of Caesar ordered the construction of a harbour complex in the west side of Puteoli (Pozzuoli), named Portus Julius, which became the headquarter of the western Mediterranean war fleet. In order to feed with water the militar base, Augustus decided to build an aqueduct from the Serino mountain to the Lake Miseno, which had, as terminal point of the path, a reservoir, today well known as Piscina Mirabilis.

PROJECT E Fengchaoshan Community Renewal Project

[Location] Fujian Province, China [Type] Community Renewal [Duration] September 2021 - January 2022 [Team make] Fanyu Gao, Yanping He [Tutor] Suyu Li

"Project E" means "everyone can meet here, everything can happen here, and the project can be spread everywhere." The project aims to encourage people to meet and have more interactions here. The project is located in the Fengchaoshan Community of Xiamen City, Fujian Province, China. After visiting the community, it could be found that a dozen dangerous houses are adverse to the community. Also, the Daxue Road outside the community is a hot spot among tourists, but the community is secluded. In order to attract the tourists outside, we decided to build a kind of unique hotel in the location of these dangerous houses to make a netty happy space.

1 SITE ANALYSIS

3 TARGET GROUPS AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN After visiting the community, it could be found that The Daxue Road outside the community is a hot spot among tourists, so a short stay in the area for a few days would be a popular option. Meanwhile, there is another phenomenon that the community seems secluded compared to the scenic spot. More than a dozen dangerous houses seriously affect residents' quality of life, which means their living space needs improvement. Therefore, a system that combines the functions of a hotel and common community spaces is created. 9

Most of the houses here were built in the 1950s, with around three floors, and were rebuilt and expanded later. Each building can be considered as a combination of three parts: A, Courtyard Area; B, Vertical Traffic Space; C, Living Space.

-9-

These small-scale buildings are modular units that can be pre -installed in the factor y and easily assembled at the construction site. In line with the composition of the other buildings, these modular units are also composed of three parts:

A Shared Space (Courtyard Area): It is both for visitors and residents to meet on the first floor and the roof terrace.

Any parts can be refreshed and replaced by another unit which is another function.

B Vertical Traffic Space: An outdoor staircase connects the two shared spaces on the first floor and the roof terrace.

A unit's daily cleaning and check-in are managed by its neighbor, who voluntarily joins the project and gets paid.

C Living space, which caters to visitors staying here for short periods.

The headquarters supervisors the daily management of all units to guarantee a high quality of living for tourists who reserve the hotel.

The modular units can be placed in any suitable location. The positive impact of either the greenery in the units or the shared activity spaces spreads within the community.

This system implements in three steps. Each modular unit can be regarded as a "depot" because it can supplement the community's social activities, greening, lighting, and income, improve quality of life and community value, and enhance people's social life.

RETHING THE COURTYARD Artist Apartment Complex

[Location] Suzhou, China [Type] Residence [Duration] September 2020 - January 2020 [Team make] Fanyu Gao [Tutor] Rachael ouyang

Suzhou is benefiting and suffering from mass tourism, especially day-trip tourism from Shanghai; with sites of popular interest causing the streets around them to suffocate. One solution is dispersal; with tourist journeys spread further around the historic centre. Such a strategy includes promoting walking routes to less visited places of interest, along with establishing patterns of complimentary mixed use, particularly between residential and commercial mixed use neighbourhoods, neither belonging to residents nor to visitors, and thriving day, night, and weekend. The specific requirements of the joint-studio (the Type-Project) will be communicated separately. The specific requirements of the Project are as follows— provide guest accommodation for 150 residents (a double bed counts as two people); Free to divide the programme into separate related buildings; the project is expected to involve at least two apartment types; the project must involve a courtyard or courtyards; the project is car-free however e-bike and cycle parking are to be provided, as well as vehicle drop-off areas and emergency vehicle access and bin collection; landscaping and access paths are to be designed as part of the complete submission, the project is to respond to the reality of the site as I find it. The project studies ancient folk houses and traditional academies in Suzhou from the perspective of typology. It also deconstructs and reorganizes the traditional garden courtyards. The purpose is to retain the memory of the place, rethink the concept of "courtyard" and its relationship with contemporary life, and arouse meaningful dialogue between the existing and the new, internal and external, public and private, architectural space and environment.

ARCHITECTURE-LANDSCAPE MECHANISM The project is located at the riverside of the outer city of Suzhou. Suzhou osmanthus garden basin garden site. Continue the design of Phase1, design a creative and artist apartment complex. A mixed use short-lived residential building with about 150 people, including other commercial projects and courtyards. The culture and Art Center is divided into four parts. It is mainly composed of Suzhou folk traditional art and modern youth art. It includes functions such as residence, studio, exhibition hall, library, cultural entertainment and art sales, combined with architectural elements such as courtyard brick, so as to attract young people to activate the site and nearby areas. Because of its unique natural and geographical conditions, profound cultural and artistic accumulation and exquisite architectural technology, Suzhou ancient architecture has become a wonderful flower in the World Architecture garden. Compared with gardens, ancient folk houses in Suzhou are often ignored, but they are the largest number of architectural forms in ancient buildings in Suzhou and an important part of the ancient city of Suzhou.

ARCHITECTUR AL THINKING IN THE CONTEXT OF MIGR ATION Caribbean Cultural Research Center

[Location] Colchester, British [Type] Research Center [Duration] September 2021 - December 2021 [Individual work] [Tutor] Richard Hay

Throughout the history of human civilization, human beings have always been in the process of continuous migration. Human migration is the movement of humans from one place to another. This project explores population migration in the Caribbean and Colchester, England. Through the study of British and Caribbean history, largescale population movements stemmed from the Roman Empire's colonization of the British Isles and the European slave trade in the Caribbean. This colonization and colonial domination brought not only bloody killing and destruction, but also culturally, technologically and racially mixed populations. The project will establish a Caribbean cultural research center in Colchester, England, with a total area of 3000 5000 square meters. The research centre will be home to researchers, educators and artists, featuring permanent and rotating exhibitions, cafés, accommodation and performances. The concept of the project comes from the concept of free flow, which defines the connection between the buildings. The project applies the design theories of Aldo Rossi, Robert Venturi and others, involving the protection of old buildings, the multi-layered and transparent architecture of buildings, the connection between man and nature, etc. Globalization and marketization are changing the world we live in. To explain contemporary architectural phenomena, we must examine these two main social contexts. In the context of globalization, the study of the phenomenon of cross-cultural architectural communication is an important field. The local environment, maintaining its own uniqueness, seeks the coexistence of order and non-order, the fusion of revolution and tradition, history and future.

SITE DESIGN STRATEGY Introducing the new to the old - symbiosis with old buildings,Architecture and nature merge

In the method of symbiosis between the old and the new, I used to introduce the new to the old, focusing on the old buildings and considering the overall environment. The first floor is a storefront along the street, one of which is a very famous pizzeria in Colchester, and the second and third floors are residential buildings. I cannot blindly settle for ignoring it or even discarding it. If it is removed, it still exists and cannot be replaced. Considering its important value in this street and city, I decided to keep it and let them become the background of my new building.

Keep the existing buildings and add new houses to the old buildings. People can see the view of the street by opening the window.

At the entrance of the underground parking lot, vehicles directly enter the underground parking lot from the outside.

The beginning of the flow, from the house to the studio, is connected by walkways.

The main entrance of the building, close to the river, is an atrium with huge rotating stairs.

Tree SYMBIOSIS WITH OLD BUILDINGS

Solar Radiation The solar radiation of the site in December and June was analyzed respectively, and the division of functional areas was judged. The gallery and theater were placed in the north because they did not require a lot of light, and the studio and library that needed good sunlight were placed in the south. 12.21

05 OTHER WORKS Adaptive Kinetic Facade Experiment Group work, with drawings completed individually ||9.2021-11.2021| Academic coursework in BEng undergraduate study ARC301 Architectural Thechnology Tutor: Gergely Csikvari (Module Coordinator), Abdullah Ibrahim (tutor), Mark Tholen (tutor), Nicola Pagnano (tutor) Collaborator: Yunyi Huang, Mingkun Li, Yongqi Zhan, Zihan Xu

We designed a variable facade for a building in Suzhou, China. The project consists of two different units: one inspired by armadillo shells and the other inspired by origami technology. These two types have their own functions and are expected to work under different conditions, but they have the same dynamic principle in machinery (umbrella structure driven by hydraulic device).
