2011 MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

2011 SEASON PREVIEW

Winning is not just about your win-loss record, it’s a multitude of factors that have to be prevalent in all phases in order to obtain success. Hard work, perseverance, dedication and passion is what makes a winner, and fourth-year head coach Brad Ruzzo believes his 2011 squad has all the ingredients needed to take the Mercer men’s soccer program to the next level. “I look around on the field and I see so much talent at every position which is only going to help us get ready for our 2011 season,” Ruzzo said. “We took some steps in the right direction last season, despite losing in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Championship, but I think this year’s team is even better and I can’t wait until we kickoff against UNC-Asheville on August 27.” The 2010 edition of the Bears was a very young and talented group that featured just one senior, but the group matured and gelled into a team that showed unlimited potential and promise. The Orange and Black finished with a 10-6-1 overall record, their first 10-win season since 2004, and hosted an Atlantic Sun Championship match for the first time since 2005.

Despite losing 10 players from last season’s team, the 2011 Bears welcome 10 newcomers into the fold and look poised and positioned to make another run at their first A-Sun Championship since 2001. Schedule

PREVIEW

Year in and year out the Bears continue to face a challenging schedule under head coach Brad Ruzzo. Mercer’s 2011 slate features more of the same, with eight top-100 RPI teams and three 2010 NCAA Tournament participants highlighting a premier schedule. The Orange and Black face a tough non-conference schedule that features a pair of NCAA Tournament teams (UCF and Duke) and home matches against Conference USA and SoCon powers UAB and Appalachian State, respectively.

COACHES

Residing in one of the most improved conferences, Mercer’s Atlantic Sun lineup poses even more challenges going into 2011. The A-Sun finished with a 2010 Final RPI of 16, up eight spots from last year, and had five teams finishing in the top100. Highlighting the Bears conference schedule is a home match against defending A-Sun Conference Champion ETSU and a marquee road tilt against FGCU, who finished 2010 with the highest RPI in the conference at #34.

BEARS

Ranjitsingh hails from Pickering, Ontario and is an active member of the U-20 Trinidad and Tobago National Team. Hennessy played his high school soccer at North Gwinnett and is a big body in net, standing 6-3. Anders transferred to Mercer from Delta State and was a four-year starter in goal at Thomasville High School. Forwards

Junior forward Richie Edmondson had another strong season in 2010 and will be counted upon even more in 2011. The Montego Bay, Jamaica native finished second on the team with nine points, four goals and one assist, and was recognized for his strong play at the conclusion of the season when he was named an A-Sun All-Conference second team performer.

MERCER

The offensive side of the ball has been a work in progress since head coach Brad Ruzzo’s arrival at Mercer, but last season’s attacking unit proved to be the most explosive during Ruzzo’s three-year tenure in Macon. The Bears scored 27 goals in 2010 and ranked 54th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 1.59 goals per game.

OPPONENTS RECORDS

With the loss of two-year starter Brett Petricek, the starting goalkeeper position is up for grabs between three newcomers. A trio of newcomers in freshmen Greg Ranjitsingh and Michael Hennessy and sophomore transfer Daniel Anders are all competing to earn the starting nod.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW CONT’D

In addition to Edmondson, redshirt junior Matt Brazer and redshirt sophomore Bryson Jones also return to the fold for Mercer up front. Brazer appeared in 15 games last season and registered his first collegiate point on an assist in a 3-0 road win over Radford. After a solid freshman season, Jones redshirted in 2010 and is another big body up top Ruzzo can utilize going into 2011. Incoming Penn State transfer Ehjayson Henry will also be competing for a starting spot at the forward position this season. Henry spent one full season in State College, appearing in four games as a true freshman for the Nittany Lions. Henry brings a tremendous amount of international experience to Mercer as he is a member of the Saint Kitts U-20 National Team. Midfielders Despite the loss of four-year starter and offensive catalyst Ian Cameron, Mercer returns a wealth of talent in the midfield, which combined with some talented newcomers, looks to be another strength for the Bears this season.

PREVIEW

Sophomore Ryan King returns out wide for the Orange and Black and emerged from a spectacular freshman campaign as a very dangerous offensive player. King finished tied for third on the squad last season with seven points, on three goals and one assist, and was rewarded by being named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team.

8

Juniors Will Betts and Joey Heavner provide two more experienced players returning to midfield and each brings a unique set of skills that Ruzzo says cannot be replaced. Betts is a force in the defensive midfield position, providing protection for the Bears back line while generating steady play and service through the middle of the pitch. Heavner made the switch from left back to wide midfielder during the middle of last season, and the results were undeniable. The Landisville, Pa. native brings incredible playmaking ability out wide and will be counted on to contribute even more on the offensive end in 2011. Junior Sharpe Sablon and redshirt freshman Michael Lewis also return to the fold in 2011 and will add depth to the unit. Sablon played in a career-high 10 games in 2010, while Lewis looks for some playing time of his own after taking a redshirt last season. Newcomers Carl-Oscar Andersson, Ashani Samuels and Sean Baumann are three highly touted recruits that also figure into the mix in the midfield rotation going into 2011. Defense As with every team coached by Brad Ruzzo, defense is expected to be the heart and soul of the squad. This 2011 edition of the Bears is no different, with all four starters returning to Macon this season and ready to improve upon last season’s success. The Orange and Black recorded six shutouts in 2010 and were ranked 44th in the country in shutout percentage. Seniors Phil Thoren and Ryan Young, junior Josh Shutter and sophomore Brady O’Brien provide Coach Ruzzo with “the best backline” in his four-year tenure at Mercer. Shutter stepped right into the middle of the Bears defense last season, after transferring in from Clemson University, and provided an attitude and swagger not seen in years past. The Sinking Spring, Pa. native was named an A-Sun AllConference second team performer in 2010 and was just recently voted onto the 2011 Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team. Young and Thoren are the only players that have been with Coach Ruzzo for all four of his seasons at Mercer and bring so much leadership and poise to the team. Young possess a 6-2 frame and the ability to become a force on set pieces due to his skill in the air. Thoren has been a model of stability and consistency on defense and is usually assigned to the opposing teams’ best player on the outside. Not to be forgotten is the fourth member of the group in O’Brien. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native is one of the fastest and most athletic players on the team and is a consistent threat with his service and forward runs. Sophomore Cole Mitchell and redshirt sophomore Vaughn Thomas also return to the fold in 2011 in search of extra playing time. Mitchell played in five games, including one start against VMI, while Thomas looks for some playing time of his own after taking a red-shirt last season. Freshman Zachary Steuer and sophomore transfer Jared Williams will also add depth to the unit.

COACHES

PREVIEW

The former associate head coach at Bradley University and assistant coach at Xavier University, Ruzzo was announced as the ninth head coach in school history on June 24, 2008.

10

A former center back during his playing days at the University of Cincinnati, Ruzzo has brought a renewed passion to the men’s soccer program at Mercer and the results have been very clear over his first three seasons on the job. Ruzzo has taken a program that missed the A-Sun Championship in 2007 and improved the squads’ win total in every season from two wins in 2008, to seven wins in 2009 and 10 wins in 2010. They say that a coach should be measured once he enters his third year running a program. If that is the case then Ruzzo passed with flying colors. The 2010 edition of the Bears ended up with a 10-6-1 overall record and a 5-4-0 mark in A-Sun play. The Orange and Black exceeded expectations in 2010 finishing third in the conference standings after being picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches’ poll. Mercer reached double-digits in total wins and won at least five conference matches for the first time since 2004. The Bears scored the most goals in 2010 (27) since 2005 and carried a goals against average (GAA) of 1.15, which was the 93rd lowest in the country. The Orange and Black’s banner season also produced two firsts in the 40-year history of the program. Under Ruzzo’s guidance, the Bears defeated their first-ever ranked team, when they downed then No. 29 ranked UAB 1-0, and earned their first-ever regional ranking when they appeared as the No. 10 team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Regional Poll. With all the success the team experienced in 2010, a number of individuals received personal recognition as well. Six Bears earned A-Sun All-Conference awards with senior Ian Cameron and sophomores Richie Edmondson, Josh Shutter and Brett Petricek earning second team honors while Ryan King and Taylor Krek were voted onto the All-Freshman team. Ruzzo had his first chance to bring in his own players and implement his style of play in his second season with the Bears, and the returns were immediate. Mercer concluded the campaign with a 7-11-2 overall record and a runner-up finish in the Atlantic Sun Championship. Under Ruzzo’s guidance, junior midfielder Ian Cameron and freshman goalkeeper Brett Petricek received conference and national recognition. Cameron was named an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region third team member, while Petricek was tabbed an A-Sun All-Freshman team honoree. Cameron, Petricek, senior forward Arkenson Neckles and sophomore striker Richie Edmondson were also all named to the 2009 A-Sun All-Tournament team after falling in the conference final. Not only did Coach Ruzzo generate success on the field, his squad produced in the classroom as well. Under his watch, the Bears were one of just 141 men’s soccer teams across all three NCAA divisions to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

2011 MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Despite a 2-11-5 record in his first campaign, Ruzzo’s squad was in virtually every contest. Of their 11 loses, six came by a one-goal margin. In the 2008 Atlantic Sun Preseason Poll, the Bears’ were picked to finish last, but their sixth place finish in the standings earned them a spot in the A-Sun Championship. Ruzzo also mentored his first Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team selection Bolade Ogunmade and instilled a sense of purpose and excitement back into the Mercer men’s soccer program. A tireless worker who is a constant advocate of the game, Ruzzo stepped up his involvement in soccer in the southeast region. Upon his arrival at Mercer he founded and currently directs the Mercer Boys Soccer Academy, which is the organization that organizes and directs all Mercer men’s soccer camp activities. Ruzzo also began to work with the Region III Olympic Development Program as a staff member for premier players. Ruzzo came to Mercer from one of the Missouri Valley Conference’s elite programs, Bradley University. He spent the past eight seasons as the Braves’ associate head coach.

-Mercer University and City of Macon Snapshots

THIS IS MERCE What distinguishes a good university from a great university extends far beyond the boundaries of its curriculum and its campus.

The competence and character of an institution’s graduates are, more often than not, the hallmarks by which its reputation is both earned and measured. As a private, co-educational institution, Mercer University has emerged as one of the premier universities in the Southeast and the nation. Mercer is truly a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Mercer’s outstanding faculty take students beyond the rigors of academic programs to explore the challenges of reason, responsibility, compassion and character. Through learning, living and leading, Mercer students are prepared not only to confront, but also to embrace the challenges of their future. Under the leadership of prominent Georgia Baptist leader Jesse Mercer, Mercer University was founded in Penfield, Ga., in 1833 and later moved to Macon in 1871. From its humble beginnings as a small liberal arts college, Mercer now offers programs in 11 schools and colleges. Conveniently located in the middle of the state, Macon serves as the educational, medical, cultural and commercial hub of central Georgia. Located just one hour from Atlanta - one of

ER... the nation’s most popular international cities - and two hours from the Atlantic coast, Macon is easily accessible from two interstate highways - I-75 and I-16. Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review among the nation’s leading universities, Mercer considers one of its strengths to be its superior faculty, who “teach from the heart.” At Mercer, students benefit from learning experiences guided by caring faculty, not teaching assistants found at many universities as is the case at many universities. The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA recently named Mercer as a “highly selective” university, and The Princeton Review has placed Mercer among the Best 351 Colleges in North America. The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the Walter F. George School of Law, the School of Pharmacy and Health Services, the School of Medicine, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, the School of Engineering, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, the Tift College of Education, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Townsend School of Music. The University also operates the Mercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins. Mercer’s enrollment is nearly 8,100 students. While many students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30 countries are represented among the student body. The average class size at Mercer is 21, with a student/faculty ratio of 13:1 - unusually low for a major university.

CAMPUS LIFE Even with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not in the grandeur of its buildings, but in the graciousness of its people - a friendly, family-like community of faculty, staff and students who strive for excellence in all that they do. The University offers a wealth of fascinating experiences and activities both in and outside the classroom. From academic clubs and honor societies, to performing arts and special interest groups, to 16 national fraternities and sororities on campus, students can choose from more than 80 on-campus organizations to discover new talents and interests and to gain important leadership skills they will need for life after college.

RESIDENCE LIFE The benefits of campus living are numerous - the development l off life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhancing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students, this is the first time they have lived away from home, and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family. All freshman and sophomores (first-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes first and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times, and students use their identification cards to gain access into their residence hall.

MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT WILLIAM D. UNDERWOOD

President Underwood has led Mercer during a period of dynamic growth and development for the University. Since his arrival as Mercer’s 18th President in 2006, enrollment has increased by approximately 15 percent to more than 8,000 students. Mercer has launched a second medical school campus (in Savannah), initiated a master’s-level physician assistant program, announced a doctorallevel program in physical therapy that will begin in 2010, and added Ph.D. programs in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and Nursing. Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer will meet the criteria established by the Carnegie Foundation for reclassification as a research-doctoral university during the 2009-10 academic year. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiving funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance. The University has intensified its longstanding commitment to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitaliza-

tion of the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission program, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.” Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an extended period. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation. President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William.

Strength and Conditioning The strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport. Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning. Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following: • three top of the line power lift full racks • over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines • three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches
