LiFE iN PUBLiC SPACE - A CASE STUDY OF RANCHi
THE DiSSERTATiON FOCUSED ON STUDYiNG AND DOCUMENTiNG PLACE-MAKiNG ATTRiBUTES OF A PUBLiC CHOWK iN AN iNDiAN CiTY. THE STUDY iNVOLVED STUDYiNG KEViN LYNCH’S ELEMENTS OF A CiTY AND ViEWiNG THEM THROUGH A CONTEMPORARY LENS, iDENTiFYiNG CONTEXTUAL ELEMENTS iN THE CHOWK THAT DEFiNE AN iNDiAN PUBLiC SPACE. KEEPiNG iN MiND THE THESiS PROJECT AND iTS LOCATiON, ALBERT EKKA CHOWK, RANCHi WAS STUDiED iN DEPTH TO ARRiVE AT THE CONCLUSiONS.
THE AREA iS DENSELY POPULATED WiTH MARKETS CROPPiNG UP AT EVERY NOOK AND CORNER, HOWEVER, THE TYPOLOGY REMAiNS PREDOMiNANTLY MiXED-USE.THiS WAS DOCUMENTED iN ORDER TO DERiVE THE TYPE OF USERS AND FACADE ACTiVATiON THAT TAKES PLACE iN THE AREA. ACCESS ROUTES DETERMiNE THE MAJORiTY OF TRAFFiC FLOR iN THE ZONE.

INFERENCE 1: HENCE, iT LAYS EMPHASiS ON THE CREATiON OF SQUARES AND PUBLiC SPACES AS MULTi-USE DESTiNATiONS, WHiLE AT THE SAME TiME DETERMiNiNG THE USER CONSENSUS TO SUiT THEiR NEEDS, i.E. “ PLACE-MAKiNG” INFERENCE 2: THE STUDY iTERATES THE iNHERENT PRiNCiPLE OF PUBLiC BEiNG AT THE CRUX OF PUBLiC SPACES.

INFERENCE 3: THE BUiLDiNGS SURROUNDiNG THE PUBLiC SQUARE SHOULD BE AT AROUND 4050 DEGREES ViEWiNG ANGLE. SUCCESSFUL URBAN SQUARES OR PLAZAS HAVE A 1:3 TO 1:2 HEiGHT-TO-WiDTH RATiO.
