GET THE JOB ‘Where Do you See yourself in 5 Years?’ It’s a question hiring managers like to ask. Lots of things might be running through your mind, but “running the place” is not the right answer. IS THIS A TRICK QUESTION?

It might be, but there is a way to answer it to your advantage. Sometimes the answer is, “not in this job,” or, “in your job,” or something like, “at a bigger better opportunity elsewhere.” But none of those are things you actually want to say to a hiring manager. The good news is you can be honest while still telling them what they really want to know. Do you have realistic expectations for your career? Are you ambitious? And does this particular position align with your growth and goals overall? For example, one way I like to think about it is: Think about where this position could realistically take you and think about how that aligns with some of your broader professional goals.

MORE EXPERIENCED AND KNOW MORE IN FIVE YEARS

So, what if this position is

© ADOBE STOCK

not a one-way ticket to your professional ambitions? It’s OK to say you don’t really know what the future holds, but you see how this experience could really help in making that decision.

You might say, “Well I’m really excited by this position at Double Eagle Energy because in five years I’d like to be seen as someone with a deeper understanding and expertise in oil and gas, and I

know that’s something that I’ll have an opportunity to do here. “I’m also really excited to take on more managerial responsibilities in the next few years and potentially even

take the lead on some projects. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing managers, and so developing into a great manager myself is something I’m really excited about.”

• Opportunity for advancement: A 2015 survey from the employment-oriented social media service LinkedIn found that the number one reason people switched jobs was related to opportunities for career advancement. The survey asked 10,000 people who recently left their jobs why they did so and 45 percent indicated they were concerned about the lack of opportunities for advancement at their old jobs. Switching careers is a significant decision that affects all aspects of professionals’ lives, including their families. When looking for a new career, look for one that provides opportunities for advancement after you get your foot in the door. If no such opportunities are available, you may soon find yourself switching jobs once again.

What to look for in a new career

Many people begin a new year determined to make positive changes in their lives. Some may aspire to read more books in the year ahead, while others may aim to master a new hobby. Professional goals also factor heavily into many people’s New Year’s resolutions. In a 2019 survey of baby boomers, who are generally defined as people born between 1946 and 1964, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average person has 12 jobs in his or her lifetime. That means that the average professional is likely to change jobs at various points during his or her career.

Working professionals who have resolved to make a career change but don’t know where to begin can facilitate the process by determining what they want out of their next career. Knowing what to look for in a career can help people land a job they will enjoy, and might even prevent them from changing jobs as many as a dozen times before retirement.

• Salary: Few people would scoff at being offered higher salaries, but it’s important that professionals looking to change careers don’t place too great an emphasis on a high salary. A recent survey from the online career resource Indeed

found that 58 percent of workers would accept a pay cut to change industries. That suggests that salary isn’t everything. However, established professionals no doubt also have an established quality of life, and some may not be comfortable if a lesser salary means they have to give up some of the luxuries they’ve grown accustomed to. Take some time to determine how much money you need to maintain your current quality of life and if giving up certain things, like the ability to travel or dine out whenever you’d like, is a price you’re willing to pay for a new career.

• Positive environment: It can be hard to gauge if a company you don’t work for fosters a positive or negative work environment, but exercising due diligence to determine this can have profound benefits. A 2008 study published in the International Journal on Disability and Human Development found that negative work environments contribute to insomnia, anxiety and depression. In addition, 36 percent of respondents to the LinkedIn survey indicated they left their old job due to dissatisfaction with the work environment. When looking for a new career, it’s important that professionals don’t overlook the value of a positive work environment. Professionals who have resolved to change careers in the year ahead can make their transition more successful by recognizing certain variables that can make work more enjoyable.

GET THE JOB | CONNECTIONS

Use your Network If you have spent time in the professional world, it’s likely you have built a network of peers and managers. Did you know that up to 80 percent of jobs are not published? According to experts at Career Horizons, most of these spots are filled by recommendations from others in the field to place the perfect candidates. When finding it difficult to gain traction after applying to online listings or in person, it may be time to take a new approach. Make a list of your previous work relationships and reach out to contacts to discover potential job leads. If you plan to enter a new field, there also are great situations to take advantage of when building a new networking web.

MEETING NEW PEERS

Building a network isn’t difficult but requires plenty of work on your end to execute efficiently. Take advantage of professional social media outlets such as LinkedIn to display your career goals and accomplishments while connecting with like-minded peers. You also should be aware of conventions or job fairs in your area. Consider different ways to market your brand and explain your openness to new opportunities during conversations. A good way to make a

© ADOBE STOCK

lasting impression is by creating a memorable business card.

FACTS ON THE HIDDEN JOB MARKET

To understand the importance of networking, check out these statistics from the Association for Talent Developers regarding the hid-

den job market. • 51 percent of top organization leaders find new hires from current employee referrals; • The expected period for job retention of networkers is eight years — only four for job searchers; and • The average annual income is 6 percent higher for

those who are referred to a position.

RECONNECTING WITH FORMER PEERS

It may feel awkward to reach out to a peer you have lost contact with to ask for a referral or recommendation letter. To lessen the stress of this situation for both parties, don’t

begin the conversation with an agenda to land a job. Instead, send a short email or request to connect on social media outlets to catch up. Once you feel comfortable with bringing up your agenda, do it in a way that benefits each of you. For example, ask what you can do for them — not what they can do for you.

How volunteering benefits students Volunteering is often seen through the lens of how volunteers help to improve their communities. Though there’s no denying the valuable role volunteers play in strengthening their communities, it’s worth noting just how much volunteers can benefit from donating their time and effort to worthy causes. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness asked 70,000 participants about their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had

volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. Volunteering can benefit anyone, and can be especially valuable to students, benefitting their overall health and helping in myriad other ways as well. • Volunteering can get a foot in the door. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that employers expect to hire 7.2 percent more new college graduates from the class of 2021 than they did from the class of 2020. That’s encouraging news,

but recent graduates will still face stiff competition as they look for their first job. Volunteering with an organization in their field can be a great way for current students and recent graduates to get their foot in the door. Even if a volunteering opportunity does not ultimately lead to a job offer, the experience students gain can help them stand out in a crowded pool of job applicants down the road. • Volunteering can help students find a career path. A 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Education found that about 30 percent of

PAGE 19

undergraduates in associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs who had declared majors changed their majors at least once within three years of their initial enrollment. The same report noted that roughly one in 10 changed majors more than once. Those statistics suggest that many students are uncertain about what they want to study at the onset of their college careers. Volunteering before and during college can help students explore their interests and see where their skills are applicable. They can then rely on that experience as they choose a major. • Volunteering expands students’ social horizons. Volunteers serve and work alongside people from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. That’s a great way to see the world through a new perspective, and it also can positively affect students’ eventual careers. Professionals who have worked with people of various backgrounds are in better position to effectively communicate with a wider array of people, which can help them build a more diverse set of business relationships. Organizations recognize that value and often prioritize hiring candidates with the kind of strong interpersonal skills students develop through volunteering. Volunteering can be a great way for students to develop an array of skills that can benefit their personal and professional lives for years to come.

How women can keep their careers going forward

Women have played essential roles in the global workforce for quite some time. Despite their contributions, women continue to face professional obstacles that many of their male colleagues never experience. The differences between the professional challenges faced by women and those faced by men have been evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. A 2020 study published in the journal World Development examined general inequality during the pandemic, focusing particularly on certain factors, including job loss. The pandemic had a devastating impact on economies across the globe, and women bore a seemingly disproportionate percentage of that impact. The study found that, during the pandemic, women were 24 percent more likely to permanently lose their jobs than

men. Women also expected their labor income to fall by 50 percent more than men during the pandemic. Strategies to keep careers on track can be especially useful in the face of these obstacles and the many more female professionals will face even after the pandemic has ended. The following are some ways women can keep their careers going forward. • Continue education. The Graduate Management Admission Test, often referred to as the GMAT, is used to assess candidates for admission into graduate level management programs, such as MBA programs. A recent analysis of GMAT test takers found that 47 percent were women, which marked an all-time high. The value of education is undeniable, and women can continue their educations via the pursuit of

advanced degrees as they look to keep their careers going forward. • Emphasize networking. The Association for Talent Development reports that 57 percent of job openings are filled through networking contacts. Networking is more accessible than ever thanks to social media sites like LinkedIn, and women can utilize such resources to build connections with mentors and colleagues that can share everything from career advice to access to new job openings. • Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion

seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers. Women face professional hurdles many of their male colleagues never experience. Various strategies can help women clear such hurdles and keep their careers going in the right direction.

Getting Interview Experience

When you’re looking for work and trying to keep the lights on at the same time, it’s not atypical to blast your resume all over the place in hopes one of them sticks. You’re called for an interview, but beforehand you discover it’s a job you don’t really want. What to do? Glassdoor advises it’s better to go ahead and show up. Good things might happen nonetheless.

GO FOR THE INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE

Attending job interviews can be nerve-wracking, so the more experience you have under your belt, the more confidence you’re apt to gain. Candidates are often advised to do trial runs before attending actual interviews, so if you’re invited to meet with a company you don’t think you’ll end up working for, you can use that interview as a test run of sorts in order to do better in the future.

EXPANDING YOUR NETWORK CAN HELP

Attending the occasional needless interview, so to speak, can actually help your career in the long run because every interview you go on gives you the chance to meet new people and make new connections, and that, in turn, can lead to different opportunities down the line.

GET THE JOB | THE JOB OF JOB HUNTING

Get Organized If you’re disorganized during a job hunt, it’s likely that it won’t result in your favor. Because you may find yourself applying for multiple positions, it’s likely your resume will be fine-tuned to meet the keywords and requirements of a hiring manager. Forgetting which copy you sent where can lead to embarrassing mistakes or worse, a dishonest and unprofessional impression. Getting lost in the shuffle when discussing career opportunities can lead to missed interviews, blown deadlines and misplaced contact information. Stay on top of the organization during your job hunt by following these helpful tips.

USE A SPREADSHEET

To organize your job applications, using a spreadsheet can keep everything organized in a neat package. When developing this data tracker, here are some important things to include in your list: • Company name and point of contact; • Email addresses and phone numbers of company; • Date applied and application summary; • Interview dates, follow-up actions and post-interview status. This will give you a clear perspective of which stage you are in for each position you have applied for and how you should move forward.

REDUCE THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS

While a spreadsheet is effective to organize multiple job submissions, limiting the number of applications you send at once also is helpful. When you only have a few to

focus on, it’s easier to follow up. For instance, it will be easier to manage sending thank-you emails to hiring managers following an interview. If possible, apply for a few batches that meet your criteria at once, rather than sending

applications to every company on a hiring website.

GET THE JOB | SELF CARE

Make Time for Yourself Looking for a new job can be stressful, especially if you are already under financial strain. One of the biggest advantages you can give yourself is to make time for yourself and improve your attitude. It will be refreshing during a job hunt and give you a boost in confidence to continue. According to experts at Career Rescue, job search fatigue is a real issue that arises when hunting for a position provides little results. Once this happens, it’s easy to become discouraged and fail to complete important steps such as networking, selling your brand and sending out more resumes. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut, here are some ways to give yourself a break to breathe before hitting the market again.

EXERCISE

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, seven out of 10 adults in the United States say they experience stress or anxiety daily, and it at least moderately interferes with their everyday lives. If an unsuccessful job hunt has you down, an efficient way to lessen feelings of dread is exercise. Blow off steam by taking a run or signing up for aerobic exercises such as yoga. You will

also gain confidence by testing your body’s physical limits.

TALK TO SOMEONE

If you are experiencing job search exhaustion, remember you’re not alone. Reach out to loved ones in your social network to explain how you’re feeling. It’s likely they have

experienced similar situations and can offer beneficial advice to get you back on track. When feelings of despair are persistent, you should seek the assistance of a professional therapist. If cost is holding you back, ask your insurance provider if their policy will cover appointments.

STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Once you are refreshed, analyze your strategy and create a new plan to hit the job market. Have you mostly applied online to little response? Perhaps your resume needs to be adjusted to entice the hir-

ing managers in your specific field. You should also get outside and apply to positions in person whenever possible. Connecting with professionals in person can boost your confidence and keep your job search exciting rather than exhausting.
