Pigeons played a pivotal role in history!

Bird Jokes

What do you call fifty penguins at the North Pole? Really lost, because penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere! Where does a penguin keep its money? In a snow bank! What do you get if you cross a cat with a parrot? A carrot!

Why Don’t Birds Get Electrocuted on Power Lines?

Knock, Knock! Who’s there? Who. Who who? Are you an owl? What do you call it when it rains chickens and ducks? Foul weather!

Do birds have magic feet? Nope!

Birds can sit on power lines and not get electric shocks because the electricity is always looking for a way to get to the ground. The birds are not touching the ground or anything in contact with the ground, so the electricity stays in the power line. But people aren’t birds! If you are close enough to touch a power line, chances are it has fallen down due to a storm, high winds, or broken tree branch. Stay away! Power lines can electrocute you.

Never touch a downed power line! •Call us at 507-451-2480 if you see a downed power line. • Always assume a downed power line is energized. • Stay 10 feet away. • Don’t drive or ride your bike over it. • If a power line falls on a car you are in, stay inside the vehicle, warn people to not touch the car, and call 911. • Never climb a tree that has power lines running through it.

Our Safety Lesson:

What does a duck like to eat with soup? Quackers! What does a mixed-up hen lay? Scrambled eggs! What does an evil hen lay? Deviled eggs! Why did the turkey cross the road twice? To prove he wasn’t chicken! What did the 500 pound canary say? Here Kitty, Kitty! Daughter: Mum, can I have a canary for Christmas? Mom: NO! You’ll have turkey like everyone else. Where does a peacock go when it loses its tail? A re-tail store! What’s noisier than a whooping crane? A trumpeting swan! What kind of bird can carry the most weight? The crane!

You can watch the birds on power lines, but you need to stay safe and stay away!

Why do hummingbirds hum? Because they forgot the words!

Pigeons played a pivotal role in history! During WWI and WWII, carrier pigeons were used to transport messages to the home coop located behind the lines. The pigeons were especially useful tool of communication in military operations during these wars as telephone and telegraph were not always reliable. It is estimated that during WWI, 100,000 carrier pigeons were used by the German, French, American and British armies in this conflict. The messages were written on a small piece of paper and attached to the leg of pigeon while flying from location to location. Each branch of service used pigeons as they could fly a mile a minute! When the pigeons landed, wires in the coop would sound a bell notifying the Signal Corp a message had arrived.

One famous bird was named “President Wilson”, he was a part of the tank corp. He was credited with drawing attention of the German soldiers who fired a wall of lead to block his path after injuring his leg. He survived his wounds and retired to be used in the breeding program at U.S. Army Signal Corp and died in 1929.

Feeding Ducks at the Park:

Skip the Bread! Many of you may have fed ducks before at a local park. Morehouse Park in Owatonna is a popular park for feeding ducks. The park has a group of ducks that stick around all year and are used to being around and fed by people. Feeding the ducks at Morehouse Park is a fun way to spend a couple hours! Before you head down to the park with your leftover bread, however; take a minute to learn why feeding them your leftover bread is not good for them.

the water quality and native aquatic plants of the river or lake. What Should you Feed Ducks? Ducks like all kinds of foods that are also good for them. Ducks like lettuce, corn, frozen peas, seeds, oats, and rice. There are some foods that are toxic to ducks and you should avoid feeding these foods to them. These toxic foods include avocados, onions, citrus, nuts, chocolate and popcorn.

The following sign, which you will see at Morehouse Park in Owatonna, is a good reminder of what you can feed the ducks. The sign also tells you where you can find healthy foods to feed to the ducks. Gather up some of these healthy foods, head down to Morehouse Park and have fun feeding the ducks!

Why Bread is Bad for Ducks It’s hard to believe that bread is back for ducks; they love to eat it and will snatch it up when you throw pieces to them. While they do love to eat it, bread does not offer nutritional value to ducks. This is somewhat easy for us to understand, it’s kind of like how you probably like eating candy which does not provide our bodies any nutritional value. Another danger with feeding ducks bread is that they will fill up with it instead of other foods that could be more beneficial to them. Feeding ducks bread can be bad for the environment too, the bread can grow mold which can make ducks sick. It can also contribute to algae growth in the water, which can kill animals and spread disease. Algal blooms can also do damage to Kids Konnect • May/June 2021 • 5

8 activities to keep kids entertained (Metro) What parent hasn’t heard their child utter the familiar phrase “I’m bored” at some point? Despite a seemingly vast array of toys, electronics and other items at their disposal, children can be quick to sulk and say there’s nothing to do. Parents can counter “I’m bored” with these eight boredom-busting activities that are certain to help pass the time in entertaining and sometimes educational ways.

1. Craft time: Pick a theme and gather the materials for the project. For example, kids can evoke a trip to the ocean by creating handmade sea creatures. Paint a paper plate and hang brightly colored yarn underneath it to create the “tentacles” of a jellyfish. Kids can use salt dough clay to fashion seashells, sea snails or crustaceans.

3. Build a birdhouse: Birdhouses or bird feeders can be made from scraps of material found around the house. Scavenge for spare lumber or other supplies in the shed or garage. An adult or older sibling can help cut the wood into pieces. Young children may enjoy painting the house. Wood adhesive or screws can be used to assemble the project.

2. Painting: Shaving cream is a great sensory material that is relatively easy to clean up. Kids can whip up a batch of shaving cream paint and use it to finger paint on a table or even in the bathtub. Simply mix shaving cream with food coloring in a bowl, or use a muffin tin to separate the colors.

4. Plan a garden: Kids can help to design a garden the entire family will maintain and even be responsible for a special parcel that’s all their own. Gardens can grow food, flowers and more. Add a touch of whimsy with figurines for a fairy garden or even small superhero figures for a spot for boys to tend.

5. Box makeovers: Tissue boxes or cereal boxes can be made into many different creations with paint or construction paper. Use a few craft supplies like pom-poms or wiggly eyes to turn boxes into “monsters.” 6. Boat races: Fill up a long, shallow container and take turns racing the boats by blowing on the sails. 7. Leaf art: Gather leaves and twigs from around the yard and then combine pieces to make them look like various animals. 8. Spray park: Create an at-home spray park with a garden hose and a pool noodle. Poke several small holes into the pool noodle on all sides. Stick a garden hose into the end of the pool noodle and hot-glue a wine cork into the hole at the other end. Turn on the water and let kids run through. Head off kids’ boredom by having plenty of ideas at the ready

Birds are some of the most amazing creatures in the world and Minnesota is the home of over 300 species of them. In this issue let’s take a look at the wonderful biology of birds, how we’ve used them as models for technology, investigate what allows them to fly, the beauty they use to find mates and how scientists track birds by their movement and calls they make.

Birding is one of the most popular pastimes that American do all over the country. There is even competitive birding where children, teens and adults will compete with others to see the most species or the fastest to find a rare bird or quickest to identify a bird song!

10 • May/June 2021 • Kids Konnect

Most people keep a Life List, this is a record of the bird species you’ve identified living in the wild. When you’re out hiking, camping, boating, or birding, record what species you identify using a bird species identification book, poster or diagram like the one above. You can start by easily identifying birds

you see right in your backyard, the diagram here shows you many of the birds that are commonly found near feeders or parks here in southern Minnesota.

Let’s create a Bird watching Checklist for the birds we might see nearby. It’s important to record what birds we see and when so we can keep a record of how often these birds are around in the wild. Scientists study how the populations of different bird species change over the years, we can help by being Citizen Scientists and recording our observations at Project FeederWatch and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (Ornithology is the study of birds): https://feederwatch.org/

TECHNOLOGY

What technologies do we use that are modeled after birds? (Besides airplanes) How can we figure out where birds go when they migrate? How do birds learn to sing their own species songs? What’s it really like to fly like a bird?

To answer these questions and many more there are exciting new technologies that people can use to help answer questions like these. For example, tracking migrating birds used to rely on attaching leg bands to birds and hoping someone will catch them again in a different location that can then be mapped.

New technologies allow researchers to attach radio tracking devices that are so small that birds can easily fly while wearing the trackers. The radio signals the bands send out allow the researchers to track the birds using their own computers, instead of hoping someone catches the bird!

Some scientists, called ornithologists, use special microphones to record birds, these are parabolic microphones. They put a large plastic dish around a microphone. 12 • May/June 2021 • Kids Konnect

Birds sing to find other members of their own species and especially to find mates in spring. But since most birds are only one year old when mating seasons comes around, how do they know what song to sing? New technology in studying bird calls allows scientists to figure out what birds do to learn the songs of their species. You can do this with an app on a cell phone!

with sily do this You can ea n lid garbage ca a plastic r phone! around you

But what is it like to “fly like a bird”? Some researchers are using goggles with cameras attached to a bird to record what it’s like to fly, as we see in this example of a parrot with “flight goggles” BionicSwif t by Fesco

Engineers in Japan were exploring new ideas on how to create a faster train that would speed across the land but with reduced air friction. The Kingfisher is well adapted to flying at high speed but its beak is used for spearing fish. The engineers of Japan’s “bullet train”, called the Shinkasen, designed the new trains based on the Kingfisher’s beak. The new engines travel at speeds of 320 Km/hr or 200 mph! Hummingbirds are the only bird capable of flying backwards, and this is due to the shape of its wings. Every other species of bird relies on

flying forward, so their wings are shaped to lift off into wind. Hummingbirds can fly in any direction, so engineers copied this idea into designing the flight patterns and propellers of new drones. Hummingbirds wings move in a “figure 8” pattern that allows them to swim through the air just

like the way we can tread water when swimming. New airplanes are being designed that copy the shape of bird bones. This allows the planes to be of lighter more flexible materials that can reduce the amount of fuel needed and the ability to react more quickly during bad weather.

Bird bones aren’t solid like mammal bones, but are hollow with lots of cross beams for support. Engineers are using this adaptation as a model to design a hollow plane that uses a lot of light weight cross beams to support the structure, but still allow people to ride inside!

Birds by the number, how many birds are there in Minnesota, in North America, in the world? Ornithologists (People who study birds) at Cornell University Lab of Ornithology have been trying to figure this mathematical problem out for many years. We can help by

Here in the United States researchers estimate we may have lost almost 29% of the total wild bird population since 1970, which means over 3 Billion, that’s 3,000,000,000, have disappeared across our country. Some species have had a worse drop in population than others, such as the Bobolink has lost more than 60% of its population since 1970. The biggest problem has been a loss of habitat for birds, land has changed into either agricultural land or cities & suburbs. We can help by landscaping our yards to help provide food, water and shelter for birds however we also need to remove predators. 18 • May/June 2021 • Kids Konnect

participating in citizen science project like Project FeederWatch, Great Backyard Bird Count, or eBird (digital recording of bird spotting).

House cats are the number one predator of birds in urban areas where almost 2 billion, that’s 2,000,000,000, birds are killed by our own pets! Keeping cats away from birds by having them indoors or staying within yards can help reduce the loss of wild birds.

We can do our part to help protect birds by learning about them, finding where they live, helping scientists estimate bird populations and providing food, water, space and shelter for all the wild birds in our community.

Practical ways to raise confident kids

By Maegen Storm, nurse practitioner, Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Mayo Clinic Health System, Faribault, Minnesota.

It’s only natural that as parents you want to instill confidence in your kids. Confident children believe in themselves and can face new challenges without fear — essential factors for a happy and fulfilling life. Children’s confidence depends on hearing certain messages, and parents are in the best position to send them. Confident children know they are worthy of being loved and belonging with their friends and family. Parents communicate this selfworth to their children through verbal and nonverbal messages every day.

There are many ways to send these messages, but parents interested in increasing their children’s self-worth can use these five messages as a starting point: 1. I delight in being your parent. Spend one-on-one time with your children doing what they love to do ― and let them lead ― for no other reason but to enjoy being with them. Give your children lots of physical affection in a sincere, natural and ageappropriate way.

2. Your self-worth does not depend on what you do, but on who you are. Praise your children for character traits rather than talents or achievements. Point out what is genuinely good and likeable about who they are. When they misbehave, focus on the specific problem behavior instead of communicating that they are bad. Praise character traits and discipline behavior.

CARE WHEN YOU NEED IT. Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna remains committed to providing the expert care you and your family need. Whether you are seeking routine or preventive care, or treatment for a more serious condition, Mayo Clinic Health System has convenient and safe options available, including virtual or in-person appointments.

3. You deserve to be treated well, and when you are not, you are strong. When children are hurt and it’s not their fault, they need three things: emotional validation, the right interpretation of what happened and to know they can do something about it. When children are hurt, do not feel sorry for them. Rather, work with them on practical ways they can stand up for themselves, such as using their words to stand up to a bully. If children know they deserve to be treated with respect and kindness, their self-worth

will not be affected when someone is mean to them. 4. Your feelings are worth being known. Children who can be their true selves will grow in self-confidence. Always encourage your children to show how they are really feeling. When children are upset, they can work through it if their feelings are validated. So be a listener rather than a teacher. Try to see things from their perspective and then let them know that you see how they are feeling.

5. You can use your strength to meet challenges. Let kids take age-appropriate risks to do what they’re excited about, even if they might get hurt. If you don’t, what they might hear is that you don’t think they are strong enough to do it. Teach your children that they can make their own decisions. Giving them simple choices when they are young teaches them to be confident decision-makers.
