10 things to do at the Rice County Fair
By MICHELLE VLASAK michelle.vlasak@apgsomn.com
Whether you like the musical entertainment, grandstand events, fair food, carnival rides or 4-H exhibits, the Rice County Fair offers something for all to enjoy.
After a year off due to the pandemic, Fair Manager John Dvorak is looking forward to the five-day celebration beginning July 21 and going through July 25.
So what is this year’s fair offering? Here are 10 fun things to do at this year’s Rice County Fair
1. Autocross racing
New to the grandstands this year is autocross racing on July 21, followed by enduro auto races July 22, both at 6 p.m. Barnes PRCA Rodeo takes place July 23 followed by Central Minnesota Pullers Truck and Tractor Pull July 24, both at 7 p.m. A power wheels event will be held Over the course of the weekend, 4-H’ers and open class participants will display the reat 4 p.m. July 25, followed by the demolition derby. After the derby, fairgoers will have one last sults of their hard work through livestock shows and general exhibits. On July 20, the 4-H chance to walk through the midway, go on one more ride or snag one last boat of cheese curds Poultry, Pigeon & Dove Show takes place, followed by the 4-H Lamb Lead Show/Sheep Show, before the fair officially ends at 8 p.m. (File photo/southernminn.com) Open Class Sheep Wool Breeds Show, 4-H Cow/Calf, 4-H Beef Show and 4-H Meat Goat Show all on July 21. The 4-H dairy, horse and rabbit shows will be July 22, with the 4-H swine show, Paradise in Porkland show, open class sheep meat breeds entry, 4-H goat show, open class WSCA entry and open class beef show on July 23. July 24 will begin with the 4-H auction buyers breakfast, followed by the open class sheep meat breed & Wether lamb show, WSCA open class horse games show, 4-H ribbon auction, Minnesota State Suffolk Show and 4-H premier showmanship. 3. A glance back at the past
Along with the Rice County Historical Society’s primary attractions during the fair, there will be several more opportunities for fairgoers to take a glance back at the past. Two displays will be featured near the Historical Society Museum throughout the weekend. One is an individual who turns wooden bowls on lathes and the other involves early 18th century pottery making, both highlighting how things were done before technical advances came about. 4. Jamaican style jerk-chicken
Dvorak said the fair will have its regular main food vendors throughout the weekend, along with one new vendor offering Jamaican-style jerk chicken. Along with vendors, local organizations and businesses operate stands, like Cammy Breitenfeldt, Shelly Breitenfeldt and Don Bowers at the St. Luke’s food stand in 2019, which has been active at the fair for at least 25 years. 6. Meet the 2021 fair ambassadors
With the crowning midway through the fair (Saturday, July 17), Dvorak hopes that by changing the day from a Tuesday to a Saturday will make the evening more intimate and special for the Rice County Fair Ambassadors, instead of rushing to take care of 4-H duties after the crowning. One other change from previous years is the way that the ambassadors will be judged. Instead of only judging the candidates based on their personal interviews beforehand, judges will also take candidate’s interviews onstage into their deliberations. Throughout the five-day festivities, fair-goers are encouraged to interact with the ambassadors and junior ambassadors and get in a photo op with them. Ella Schmidt, center, reacts as 2018 Rice County Fair Queen Megan Vikla crowns her as one of the three 2019 Rice County Fair Ambassadors. On her left, candidate Vicky Erickson shows her support. 5. Rice County Fair President’s pick
Gold Star Amusement will provide over 20 ride/carnival game opportunities at the fair this year. Some fan favorites include the Tilt-a-Whirl (a Faribault original), Scrambler and ferris wheel. For Rice County Fair President Tara Langevin, taking a ride on the ferris wheel is something she makes sure to do every year. As someone who has quite literally been going to the fair ever since she was born, she enjoys getting a view of the town from a different perspective, particularly at night. Whether she has her children, husband or a friend with her, she is able to find someone to go with her every year. The rides open at 1 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday, and at noon Thursday-Saturday. 7. The Whitesidewalls
The Whitesidewalls will be rocking their 15th year performing at the Rice County Fair this year. Scheduled to perform in the evening of July 22, the Twin Cities based band features classic rock ‘n’ roll, doo-wop and rockabilly music. Other free entertainment will include events like like Midwest All-Star Wrestling July 23 and La Raza de Mexico on July 24. Performers include Brodini Family Comedy/Magic Show, Tuey the Juggler and Dazzling Dave with yo-yo tricks. All will be onsite over the week/ weekend. Tuey Wilson has been entertaining fans with his juggling skills for well over three decades. (File photo/southernminn.com)
8. Senior Day
Senior Day takes place July 22, and features a senior spotlight meal at 11:30 a.m. followed by the senior volunteer program at 1 p.m. Other senior day specials include golf cart rides from your car and around the grounds, look for special “senior spotlight” price signs and all Shows on the Cannon Stage and Sellner Midway Stage. The 2021 Outstanding Senior Citizen will also be awarded during the 1 p.m. program. Accordions on Fifth will provide musical entertainment. Pictured are 2019’s recipients Sara and Marvin Schrader. 9. Kids activities/attractions
Before attending the Central Minnesota Pullers Truck and Tractor Pull, kids will have the opportunity to pull a tractor of their own. On July 21, the kids pedal tractor pull will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the 4-H Plaza. The contest is for children ages 4-11, and each contestant must have parent or guardian’s signature to participate. Whoever pulls the weighted sled the greatest distance in his/her age group will be the winner in that group. First- and second-place winners will be able to advance to the Minnesota State Pedal Tractor Pull. Other activities for kids include Kids Day specials July 23, demonstrations with the Rice County Historical Society from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, visiting with Tuey the Juggler or seeing what adventures are available in the Children’s Barnyard which is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Baby bunnies, calves, goats and more will be waiting for children to see in the Dairy Barn. ing gardens at the fairgrounds several years ago after the Rice Soil and Water Conservation District installed a rain garden on the grounds in 2008. Signs set up throughout the garden are intended to help teach visitors which plants thrive in what conditions. Aside from a sun garden, shade garden, rain garden and water garden, there is also a butterfly garden. Most recently, Bethlehem Academy agriculture students tended to the master gardeners’ teaching gardens. Dvorak encourages all fairgoers to take a look at this space at some point during their trip to the fair and see the hard work put into it over the An area of the fair Dvorak was particularly happy to see improved was the space between years. Master gardeners will be onsite from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the fair to answer fairgoers the Conservation Building and the gazebo. The master gardener volunteers started the teach- gardening questions. (Michelle Vlasak/southernminn.com)
