The View Thank you from for supporting UWCS: Community Pathways
Recover, Reimagine, Rebuild
By ANNETTE DUNCAN President, United Way of Steele County
This past year brought it’s challenges; however, it also brought opportunities and reminded us to be more mindful of what we have. When things are going well, we sometimes have a tendency to take each day (and the people around us) for granted. We discovered quickly how everything that we know can be taken away, including something as simple as a handshake. We’ve learned to adapt, to keep moving forward, to stay connected, to reach people in new and creative ways. We’ve done this because this is what the community needed us to do, and we’re not alone. Individuals, organizations, and businesses across the county did this everyday throughout the pandemic, despite the risks. They made a choice to put others before themselves and exemplified what is means to LIVE UNITED. For this and so much more, we say thank you to our Frontline Heroes! We are thrilled to partner with the Steele County Free Fair to make the Jason Pritchett concert open to everyone in our community.
By ROBIN STARR Community Pathways Marketing and Outreach Coordinator
2020 was a difficult time for everyone. Being in a global pandemic brought many challenges and adaptations to our lives that, at times, were complicated to accept. It meant the loss of normalcy and our sense of security. COVID-19 ensured that uncertainty was our only guarantee. Even knowing that things could change by the second, we at Community Pathways stood our ground and pushed ahead determined to do what we had always
done: serve our community and fight food scarcity. As mandated orders were handed down and our doors were forced to close, we knew that we needed a plan. Thus came the flip phones, curbside ordering, increases in mobile deliveries, temperature checks and visitor limitations as well as strict cleaning protocols and changes to staff and
volunteer duties. June 1 was a great day. We’d made it through and could now reopen our doors to the Marketplace and Unique Finds. We transitioned to the Choice Model which allowed for members to shop weekly, instead of monthly. This also meant being able to choose what they felt would satisfy their family’s needs. This change was one of joy for us. Seeing relief and restoring connection brought us renewed vigor. Over the last year Community Pathways has seen an increase in new memberships as many in Steele County found hard times.
To best serve our community, our current capital campaign is focused on a building expansion. The new space will allow us to have more storage for food and clothing as well as room for programs from Let’s Smile Inc and Transitional Housing. We’d like to thank the Steele County Free Fair and United Way of Steele County for hosting this event and supporting Community Pathways in our fundraising efforts.
Duncan
This concert is meant to be a celebration of everything that we’ve been through together and to build up our strength for all that is ahead of us. A freewill donation will be available, for those interested in helping support recovery efforts in Steele County. The need in our community is great, but we are up for the challenge and with your support we can accomplish anything. We will Recover, Reimagine, and Rebuild, together. This is how we LIVE UNITED. Text UWSC2021 to 202-8581233 and join us in changing lives in Steele County.

County music star Jason Pritchett will be performing a free concert at the Steele County Free Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 18. The concert will serve as a community “thank you” to all those who stepped up in a variety of ways during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pritchett was a finalist in season two of America’s Got Talent. Steele County Free Fair says ‘thanks’ with free concert
By ANNIE GRANLUND annie.granlund@apgsomn.com
After the fair was forced to take a year off, organizers knew they needed to do something big for the community that missed out on being together during COVID-19. The Steele County Free Fair will be providing the first of three grandstand concerts during fair week free to the public. Fair Board Vice President Wayne Steele said it was an easy decision considering all everyone has gone through over the last 18 months. “We believe that saying thank you is important — I know that I wish I could say thank you to every single nurse and front-line hero out there,” Steele said. “I feel like this is my chance to do that — it is our chance to do that.” Dubbing the Wednesday, Aug. 18 concert “Celebrate Our Front Line Heroes,” the event will be free for everyone while also serving as a free-will donation fundraiser for two powerhouse Steele County nonprofits: Community Pathways of Steele County and the United Way of Steele County. Personnel and volunteers from those two organizations will be staff-
ing the grandstand show that night, which will feature Jason Pritchett, an up and coming country music star that was featured as a finalist on the second season of America’s Got Talent. According to Fair Manager Scott Kozelka, Pritchett was all for the idea of making his concert free. “He was on his way to coach a little league game, but he answered the phone and was instantly onboard,” Kozelka said. “He is a high-energy performer and will be a great way to recognize all of the frontline workers throughout the evening.” Owatonna native and singer-songwriter Travis Thamert will open for Pritchett. While the mind commonly jumps to those working in the health care industry when they hear “front line worker,” fair organizers insist it is to recognize every single essential worker or anyone impacted by the pandemic. Jim Abbe, who sits on the grandstand committee for the fair, said the night will set the tone for everything they want the fair to be in 2021. “It’s about the clerks at the grocery stores and the people who checked in on each other’s mental health,” Abbe said. “It is for all of the people in Steele County and our guests.”
For UWSC, President Annette Duncan said it was easy to support the project regardless of having an opportunity to raise additional funds. “This has been a continuous conversation since last year,” Duncan said about finding a way to thank those on the front line during COVID-19. “There are so many people who gave back to ensure that we could have as normal of a day-to-day life as possible, so naturally we want that opportunity to thank them.” Duncan said it makes sense that the big community act of gratitude would be done at the fair considering the longstanding reputation of the SCFF providing opportunities for nonprofits in the area. Each year, roughly 30 local nonprofits benefit financially from the fair, some of which include money raised during the week-long event as an annual budget line item. Community Pathways Co-Executive Director Nancy Ness said that she didn’t see this opportunity coming, but that Community Pathways was quick to jump on board. Throughout the pandemic, the Steele County fairgrounds has served as a staging zoning for several “truck-to-trunk” events hosted by Community Pathways. At those events, hundreds upon hundreds of vehicles line up to receive free boxes of food.
“It has been a long 18 months, so to have this free for everyone is such a gift,” Ness said. “We are so excited to be given this ability and opportunity to say thank you.” Along with the free concert, there will be seven drawings during the night for cash prizes. As people enter the grandstand, they will be given a raffle ticket for the drawings with no purchase necessary. Five individuals will win $100, one will win $200, and the winner of the grand prize will receive $300 plus two tickets to each remaining grandstand show. Monetary free-will donations will be accepted and split evenly between the two nonprofits. Checks are asked to be made payable to the Steele County Free Fair with “concert benefit” in the memoa as the fair will be dividing the donations and gifting the money to the entities. The United Way is collecting “thank you” messages for essential workers to share during the event. Messages can be sent through their website at UnitedWaySteeleCounty.org/thank-frontline-heroes. The concert is sponsored by Hy-Vee, Camping World, Townsquare Media Group and Godfather’s Pizza.
PAGE 6 Bringing Back the Fun in 2021 Continued from page 3 classroom featuring a fully operational milking parlor. The classroom carries a live cow, milking equipment and highly trained instructor for the presentation. KRFO Town Square is also home to The Kid’s Zone where a variety of activities, including a giant coloring mural and playground, can be enjoyed by children while adults watch their children play from the comfort of the picnic tables. Enjoy a ride around the east side of the fairgrounds on the trackless, beautifully crafted replica of an oldfashioned steam engine. The Northwest Express Railroad is sponsored by House Chevrolet of Owatonna. Shows Around the Fairgrounds Alexander Lumber Company brings to the fair the Robinson Carving Company. The Robinson family has been doing sculptures for the past two decades with their chainsaws. They will be doing 3 – 4 shows daily with a new sculpture being created at each show. The All-Star Stunt Dogs Show, as seen on Ellen, Oprah and at The Minnesota State Fair, will leave fairgoers in awe as the high energy dog show entertains young and old alike with frisbee dogs, trick dogs and performance dogs. The Great Outdoors Center The new Great Outdoors Center, in preparation for Steele County Free Fair, has new siding, doors and windows. The indoors of the Great Outdoors Center will feature new exhibits this year along with some of the old exhibits.

WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF A
POWER OUTAGE Lightning strikes, high winds, fallen tree branches – summer storms can be powerful, but leave us power-less! Rest assured, Owatonna Public Utilities will work non-stop until your power is restored. Here are some things to do in the event of a power outage:
REPORT YOUR OUTAGE.
For fastest outage reporting, log into your SmartHub account (there is a mobile app available). This feeds the information directly into our outage management system. If you don’t have a SmartHub account, set one up today by following the link on our homepage. (You will need your utility billing account number.)
KEEP REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS CLOSED.
• A refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. • A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours for a half full freezer) if it remains closed.
PLAN AHEAD. • • • • •
Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices. If you need to use a generator, keep it outdoors and away from windows. Use surge protectors, or disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges. Have portable power banks charged and ready for cell phones. Prepare an emergency kit with flashlights/candles and a weather radio.
REMEMBER, IF YOU SMELL NATURAL GAS OR HAVE AN EMERGENCY, CALL 911.
View our interactive power outage map at: www.owatonnautilities.com/outages
