D-8
D-10
Farida’s best selling model, the D-8 has come from nowhere to become one of the UK’s favourite starter guitars.
Big brother of the D-8, the D-10 has the same no-nonsense aesthetic and approach to tone. Several upgraded features, however, make the D-10 the first choice for the student wanting to put more in and get more out of their guitar.
Every aspect of the D-8 is designed for the student guitarist. The action is low and easy, the gloss neck has a slim, comfortable profile, and the design leans towards function and reliability rather than unnecessary trim. The D-8’s unassuming appearance, however, belies the hours of research and development poured into this instrument. The construction principles employed are aimed at producing the best tone with the least effort, making it an ideal choice for the beginner. The D-8 also comes with a free course of fifty-two internet guitar lessons courtesy of playmusictoday.com, and a fitted hardcase, making this the complete acoustic guitar package for the committed learner.
The deeper-profile matt finish mahogany neck allows the player to dig in for greater sustain, whilst still maintaining a low action for maximum ease of play.
Playmusictoday.com See page 23 for details
The top, or soundboard, is made from solid Sitka spruce, which resonates to produce a warm upper range. Not only does the solid top increase the tonal spectrum of the guitar but it also increases its volume, making the D-10 ideal for softer strumming and finger-picking styles. The D-10 is also available in a left handed version, the D-10L. MODEL

D-12ce The D-12ce is Farida’s entry-level Dreadnought electro, and is designed with the same easy playability as the D-8. Perfect for the new guitarist, or for the electric guitarist new to acoustics, the D-12ce has a slim, low-action neck and lightweight body, complete with cutaway for upper fret access. Electronically, this model is equipped with an under-saddle piezo pick-up system which feeds directly into a Fishman powered pre-amp. The three band graphic EQ allows the player to tailor their own plugged-in sound directly from the guitar, ideal for the gigging musician.
“I played a lot of guitars and not one compared to the Farida” Polly Mackey Tipped as one the major breakthrough acts of 2009, Polly Mackey has already created quite a buzz in the industry, culminating in her appearance in the finals of this year’s annual ‘MIBI’ songwriting awards. Her newly recruited backing group ‘The Pleasure Principle’ have added a harder edge to her sound, described by NME as ‘wandering heartstrung acoustic pop’. A year of incessant gigging at just about everywhere worth playing in the UK has paid off for Polly, being invited to appear at the prestigious South by Southwest festival in Austin Texas. Not bad when you consider that she is still just seventeen years of age. www.myspace.com/pollymackey

Pre-amps How do you reproduce the rich detailed tone of your favourite acoustic guitar through an amplifier? The answer to this question is something of a “Holy Grail” to gigging acoustic players, and the path to it is littered with plenty of fool’s gold! New weird and wonderful pre-amp solutions emerge every year, all claiming to finally deliver that authentic sound. To make things more confusing, the behaviour of electro-acoustics can alter drastically depending on the acoustics of different venues, not to mention the volume, crowd size, amplifier etc. The key to a good plugged-in sound is adaptability and tone control, with the tone of the finished electro-acoustic sound heavily dependent on the quality of its on-board pick-up and pre-amp system. Farida’s electro-acoustics feature vibration-based ‘Piezo’ pick-ups located under the saddle in the guitar’s bridge piece, ideally placed for gathering the maximum tonal information from both the strings and the soundboard. This raw signal is then fed to a battery-powered pre-amp system to produce a finished sound. What makes Farida electros’ something special is that they are equipped with top-of-therange Fishman pre-amps, famous for their fantastic capabilities in sound-crafting. From the pre-amp unit mounted in the side of your guitar you are able to mould your sound to suit the needs of the song, altering your tone with small adjustments to the equalisation faders. This control allows you to make sure your acoustic sounds sweet no matter where you play.

THE GUITAR PLAYER’S BIBLE
Farida D16N, A22NS-CE & D62AN
In their review of the D-16N, Guitarist magazine declared it ‘an excellent all-rounder for the money’, and noted that the ‘dynamics are supple and sustainful’, with a ‘rich vein of low end warmth’. As popular with consumers as it is with the critics, the D-16N is a great acoustic guitar, and will lend itself to virtually any style of playing. The classic square-shouldered ‘Dreadnought’ dimensions get the most from the solid Englemann spruce soundboard, with the rosewood back and sides providing the warm bass response that so impressed the critics.
Much more than the usual ‘six string model with a few adjustments’ design so often employed by guitar manufacturers, the D-16N-12 is a perfect example of Farida’s individual approach to each new guitar.
£329, £379 & £649
10/1/07 12:58:26
GIT287.reprint 1
The classic styling of the detail employed on the D-16N, from the soundboard binding to the wood-mosaic centre strip on its book-matched back, are meticulously hand crafted, and are testament to the outstanding skill of Farida’s team of luthiers.
Every aspect of this model’s design and construction has been conceived for the increased dynamics of the extra strings, making a huge difference to the finished tone. The soundboard is a higher grade of solid Sitka spruce, giving an extra boost to the higher frequency range of the octave strings, and producing a truly massive strumming sound. The rosewood back and sides balance this brightness with a rich bass response, equally rewarding for the enthusiastic strummer or the light-fingered picker. The mahogany neck is expertly set to accommodate the extra tension of twelve strings whilst still keeping the action low, perfect for the player new to twelve strings.

D-32
D-52
A beautiful instrument, the D-32 features a solid red cedar soundboard, gloss finished and edged in walnut binding. What makes this guitar something truly individual, however, is its back and sides, cut from quilted mahogany; a wood known as much for its scarcity as it is for its stunning looks. The D-32 matches this luxuriant appearance sonically, with the mahogany adding a crisper edge to the warm, mid-range tone of the red cedar.
Total Guitar magazine gave this model a maximum five stars in its review, and a ‘Best Buy’ award to boot. The reviewer singled out its ‘Beautiful sound, slim neck and great quality woods’ as outstanding features of this model, declaring that the ‘neck on the D-52 is as slim and as comfortable to play as any electric guitar we’ve tried’.
Ideal for finger-style, the D-32 radiates a soft, even tone, with thickness of the soundboard providing a deep, lasting sustain.

The top is cut from solid Sitka spruce, giving a crisp, bright tone, perfectly complemented by the all-solid mahogany back and sides. This classic combination of spruce and mahogany is incredibly versatile, equally capable of a delicate, floating tone when picked, and a boisterous, boomy strum when really hit. This broad, open tone is also partly due to the matt finish of the D-52, with the un-lacquered timber resonating freely and delivering maximum volume and sustain.

D-62N / D-62an The D-62N is Farida’s flagship acoustic guitar, designed to be as stunning visually as it is sonically. Guitarist magazine praised the enhanced projection of the D-62N; ‘willing, exuberant and easy breathing’ it said, awarding this guitar a whopping four and half stars out of five. A quick look over the specifications of this guitar and it becomes clear why.
“When you’re playing in front of 10,000 people you need to know the gear is up for it”
The soundboard is cut from Farida’s finest solid Englemann spruce, producing a clear ringing upper and mid range. This sweet, highly-detailed tone is underpinned by a warm, full bass response courtesy of the solid rosewood back and sides. The overall finished tone is loud, balanced and luxuriant, capable of finely tuned subtlety and wilful exuberance in equal measure. The D-62 is also available in electro-acoustic form, the D-62an. To capture the breadth of tone this guitar offers acoustically requires the highest quality pre-amp system available, and so the D-62an is fitted with Fishman’s renowned Aura™ system. Neither a simple pick-up system nor a synthesised digital processor, the Aura™ system uses Acoustic Sound Imaging™, as Fishman put it, ‘a quantum leap in acoustic amplification’.
Eddie Lundon of China Crisis In their 25 year career, China Crisis have sold six million records, toured with The Police, David Bowie and Santana among many others, and still continue to fill venues worldwide with their loyal fanbase. Their arena tour earlier this year pulled the crowds once again, culminating in their fantastic homecoming gig at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. Unlike many ‘80’s revivalists, China Crisis have never been away, and Eddie’s prominence in the Liverpool music scene has seen him appointed as a director of the world famous LIPA Academy.

Farida Parlour
M-2 Since hitting the UK in 2007 the M-2 has been one of the surprise success stories of the UK guitar market, and one of Farida’s best sellers. Guitarist magazine gave this model a glowing five-star review, declaring it ‘a big hearted vibrant-sounding parlour that’s an absolute snip’, and praising its ‘clear quick response’. Add to this the praise heaped on this guitar by a multitude of happy customers online and it is no surprise that this model has acquired such an awesome reputation, and is often pre-sold before it reaches UK shores. The M-2 is clearly inspired by 1920’s design principles, with its small ‘parlour’ size focusing on player-comfort, and its Canadian red cedar top radiating a soft, even tone. For such a boutique-styled instrument to garner such interest is a testament to the breadth of musical styles to which the M-2 lends itself. Completely at home with Hawaiian, Bluegrass, and open-tuned playing styles, this guitar is also a favourite of anyone from Indie-strummers to Classical pickers new to steel-string models. Quite simply far too good for its price-tag.

Following in the footsteps of the M-2, the M-5 follows the same simple, focused design, but with an emphasis on a more contemporary sound. The solid spruce top provides greater projection than its cedar counterpart, and a more trebleorientated tone overall. This extra volume is ideal for the new player, giving maximum output for minimum effort, and is also perfect for the player new to fingerstyle guitar.
This is the top of Farida’s parlour range, and a very special guitar indeed.
The more precise tone of the spruce makes it great for getting heard when sitting in with other instruments, perfect in a small acoustic group, or in a teaching environment. T-7
T-16
Originally conceived as a travel guitar for adults, the T-7 has also proved extremely popular with junior players. The price-tag has made this guitar an affordable choice for parents wanting to provide an instrument of real quality for their budding guitarist, with the smaller size not sacrificing tone or volume for the sake of playability. Whilst the thinner neck width and low action are ideal for the new player they are also a treat for the more seasoned player wanting a great little second guitar to take anywhere.
This guitar is a real treat for a younger player, or for anyone who likes a little guitar with a big sound. The T-16 takes the same easy playability of the T-7 and adds the extra tone and volume of a soundboard cut from solid Sitka spruce, braced to get the most from its smaller dimensions. Incredibly loud and resonant, the natural wood tone of this guitar will mature in time and grow with its player. Ideal both as a very special first instrument, or as a travel guitar for the serious guitarist. Comes complete with padded Farida gigbag.

F-8ce
F-12ce
Farida’s starter electro-acoustic, the F-8ce has proved popular with a wide range of players. The smaller body size makes it a popular choice for younger guitarists, while the cutaway design and low string-action appeal to electric players new to acoustics.
Big brother of the F-8, the F-12ce takes the same cutaway design and easy playability and adds a greater tonal variety and attention to detail. The slim, gloss finish neck is finished to a higher degree, and the improved pre-amp ensures a more professional plugged-in sound. With its tobacco sunburst finish, this model is perfect for the electro player wanting a great looking electro that will not break the bank.
The F-8ce is fitted with a piezo pick-up system and powered pre-amp system which provides a clean crisp amplified sound.

C-9 The C-9 is aimed at the serious or intermediate student of the classical guitar. The same approach to reliability and stability is evident here, but with more of a focus on serious tone. The soundboard is made from solid sitka spruce, giving the nylon strings much greater projection and tonal colour. The construction is designed to get the most from this soundboard, with the internal fan-bracing giving extra sustain. Like all solid wood models the C-9 is a guitar that will develop with time, resonating more freely the more it is played, and evolving to suit its player. The aesthetics are again understated, with all the emphasis squarely on the sound. MODEL

C-35ce The serious choice for the gigging or recording classical guitarist. The C-35ce is both a fantastic stand-alone classical guitar in its own right, and a superb electric instrument. The solid spruce soundboard, set on its rosewood back and sides, gives out all the tone you could expect from a top quality classical, while the Fishman powered EQ translates it into a powerful, rounded, plugged-in signal.
“very light and comfortable, the response of the sweet Spanish sound was quite something, thanks Farida” Brian Locking - former bass player with The Shadows Brian ‘Liquorice’ Locking is one of the UK music industry’s founding fathers. Achieving chart success in the 50’s as a bass player with both The Shadows and Marty Wilde’s Wildcats, Brian has been playing and performing ever since. A massive influence on generations of fans and contemporaries, Brian still regularly thrills crowds with his musicianship and engaging on-stage banter. A true multi-instrumentalist, Brian (nicknamed ‘Liquorice’ for his penchant for clarinet) has recently recorded a new album of harmonica standards, due for release soon.

FH-18 Astoundingly simple and effective, the FH-18 has been a surprise hit with a broad spectrum of players since it entered the UK market. The lightweight, solid body combined with the hand-rolled edges of the fingerboard make this guitar incredibly easy to play, with the low-output ceramic pick-ups lending themselves to a variety of sweet vintage tones. Arguably the most impressive feature of the FH-18, however, is the two-point Wilkinson tremolo system, able to withstand even the most rigorous use and stay perfectly in tune.
“These guitars are a great find, I can’t believe the price tags they have put on them, everyone should have two in their collection” Colin Hinds – Session guitarist A renowned session player since the age of seventeen, Colin Hinds has played with a host of household names including Paul Carrack, Ruby Turner and Gary Barlow. Colin became a full time member of ‘80s legends China Crisis eight years ago, and has since divided his time between recording, touring and holding guitar master-class sessions. During his career Colin has been lucky enough to play just about every guitar out there, but has now found his ideal touring guitar, the Farida FH-18.

Farida’s intermediate guitar in the Hypersonic range features the same easy action as the FH-18 but with several upgraded features.
The deluxe model of Farida’s Hypersonic range is designed as the ultimate lead guitar weapon.
The body is made from solid alder, which combined with the alnico single-coil pick-ups delivers a harder edged sound, great for use with overdrive. The solid wood body is contoured along its edges, giving the FH-39 a highly individual retro look, finished off with black hardware. Like all guitars in the Hypersonic range the FH-39 is fitted with a Wilkinson pivoting two-point tremolo system: absolutely awesome in terms of scope and reliability.
The solid mahogany guitar body itself is ergonomically contoured at the back, and finished with a highly figured flame maple veneer top. Output is the name of the game here, with USA-made Seymour Duncan pick-ups and a five-way switch offering plenty of screaming tonal options. The ebony fingerboard grinds out a dark resonant sustain, with the Wilkinson tremolo allowing even the most drastic dive-bomber room for expression. AB-10 A superb instrument, the AB-10 delivers the same full, rounded tone acoustically as it does through an amplifier. The solid spruce soundboard moves freely, instantly responsive to the breadth and depth of tone generated by the AB-10. All the details of this guitar, from the bone nut to the rosewood neck, are of the highest quality, making this guitar a stand-out professional instrument at a reachable price-point.
In just two short years The Wombats have come from obscurity to become one of the UK’s most successful bands. Hit singles, hit albums, non-stop sell-out tours, NME awards, there is very little this band haven’t done, and next year looks set to be their busiest yet. One of our most successful musical exports, The Wombats also have an awesome global following, with their signature brand of on-stage showmanship selling out venues from here to Melbourne.

The solid plugged-in tone provided by the Fishman Prefix pre-amp has proved popular with a broad spectrum of players, including Tord Averland-Knudsen of indie superstars The Wombats. Tord was so impressed that he used the AB-10 at the launch of their latest single and The Wombats’ recent BBC Radio 1 live lounge session. MODEL

Farida’s entry level FPB model punches way above its weight, with a solid low end that will lend itself to virtually any style.
Farida’s upgraded FPB-18 model includes a number of features truly outstanding for a guitar of this price-point.
The solid wood body and set maple neck give a great natural tone, boosted by the split humbucker pick-up configuration. The simple straight-ahead functionality of the single volume and tone controls are enough to give the player a host of easily accessible tonal options.
The body is made from solid swamp ash, matt finished to allow maximum resonance and movement. The clear open grain of the natural finish body is complemented by the rosewood fret-board, itself adding an extra layer of sustain to the overall tone. The plugged-in tone of the FPB-18 is solid and detailed, with the split hum-bucker getting the most from the superior wood construction.
