MAKHBAZ HIKAYAT

The proposed project (translating literally to a “Bakery of Stories” in Arabic) is grounded in the simple idea that breaking bread with those whose lives and backgrounds are different from our own can play a key role in bringing communities together.

Makhbaz Hikayat hopes to address the issue of urban refugee integration by focusing on the intangible connections of the human spirit, brought about by similarities in regional culture. Specifically, the network of pop-up community restaurants and food trucks seeks to build off the basic human connections taking place over meals and shared food habits - through the use of both traditionally laid out tables and modern grab-and-go interfaces.

The proposed project (translating literally to a “Bakery of Stories” in Arabic) is grounded in the simple idea that breaking bread with those whose lives and backgrounds are dif ferent from our own can play a key role in bringing commu nities together.

Makhbaz Hikayat hopes to address the issue of urban refu gee integration by focussing on the intangible connections of the human spirit brought about by similarities in region al culture. Specifically, the network of pop-up community restaurants and food trucks seeks to build off the basic hu man connections that take place over meals and shared food habits - through the use of both traditionally laid out tables and modern grab-and-go interfaces.

The program, accessible to both refugees and Jordanians, features varying delivery systems. In the economically dis advantaged neighbourhoods of East Amman, where the majority of the city’s Syrian, Iraqi and other refugees live amongst their Jordanian hosts, community nodes consisting of multiple modules form the core of the Makhbaz Hikayat network.

In the more affluent neighborhoods of West Amman, home to middle and upper-class Jordanians and expats, food trucks rotate between sites and have a stronger urban presence, springing up at public parks and mall plazas. In downtown areas, woven into the tight urban fabric and congested flow of traffic, single or double modules serve as quick-bite stops at popular souqs and public markets.
