chronic fatigue syndrome to hormonal changes – especially since more women than men are affected with the disorder. An injury to the upper cervical spine, that may have had a profound effect on the central nervous system, may also cause fibromyalgia. This injury may have resulted from a fall, an accident or a sports injury. These types of trauma can cause a misalignment of the top vertebra, the axis, which may result in nerve interference that compromises the body’s natural ability to function and heal properly. Upper Cervical care can locate and correct the misalignment, restoring balance to the body, which can then greatly reduce or even eliminate the symptoms and the cause of fibromyalgia. In one study of 23 participants, who had fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, all of whom received Upper Cervical care, every single participant was able to resume their normal activities, including fulltime work, within seven months of beginning care. For fibromyalgia sufferers, Upper Cervical care can end their longstanding battle with pain and fatigue and give them their lives back. One of our patients, a former fibromyalgia sufferer, states, “Before I began Upper Cervical care, I thought my life was over. Now, I am pain and symptom free, something I never dreamed possible after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I recommend Upper Cervical care to everyone I know – simply because it works!” Do you know anyone who is suffering with fibromyalgia? Please show them this article to offer them hope and a way out of their pain.
About Upper Cervical Care and Our Practice The human body is a miraculous creation with the ability to heal itself under the proper care and conditions. When your head is not properly balanced on the first vertebra of your spine – the atlas – brain signals from our nervous system to and from all parts of your body are disrupted, causing dysfunction and disease. Your head must remain perfectly balanced and in alignment on top of your neck (atlas) to prevent any interference in the communication network between your brain and body parts. The Atlas Orthogonal instrument we use in our office delivers a mechanical impulse through a metal stylus. This impulse, transmitted through the stylus, exits as an instantaneous compression wave. The stylus does not move at all during the adjustment. It feels like a light tap to the patient. This instrument takes into account the fact that you are a unique individual, unlike any other person on this planet. Your internal structures differ from everyone else’s in the same way as your outward appearance does. Therefore, every adjustment using this technique is tailored specifically to your individual structure and situation with scientific precision and accuracy. The effects of this single adjustment influence the entire spine and nervous system and allow the head, neck, spine and pelvis to return to their proper positions, restoring balance to the body.

Excellence in Plastic Surgery
with a Caring Touch
by Anya Kishinevsky, M.d.
Isn’t Plastic Surgery just for celebrities or vain people? No, far from it. Plastic surgery is a medical specialty designed to correct the structural or functional problems that arise from trauma, cancer, birth defects, pregnancy, and aging. Each person’s body reacts differently to these situations, and there is no reason to have to live with a severe deformity caused by any of these conditions. In many cases, your health insur-
Plastic Surgery with a Personal Touch
ance will cover reconstructive surgery to restore your body’s natural form and to regain the self-confidence to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
What is a “Mommy Makeover?” In many cases, pregnancy and nursing take their toll on a woman’s body. We selflessly carry another human being to term and nourish him or her during infancy. Often, the skin of the abdomen loses elasticity, continues to sag after the pregnancy is over, and develops stretch marks that don’t go away. Sometimes the skin of the breasts loses its elasticity as well, with permanent stretch marks and drooping of the breasts. The nipples are areolae are enlarged and displaced. A “mommy makeover” is a popular procedure that combines a tummy tuck with a breast lift to restore the tight contours of the pre-pregnancy body. A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin, stretch marks, and fat. It tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall and results in a flatter abdominal profile. A breast lift removes excess skin and stretch marks to recreate a more youthful, round, and perky breast. Not all stretch marks will be removed - those below the belly button and closest to the nipple are taken away consistently.

A mommy makeover is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, including a good diet and exercise. The results are technically permanent but may be significantly diminished with major fluctuations in weight. Women who are planning a substantial weight loss or future pregnancies are advised to postpone surgery. Women who smoke should quit all nicotine products for one full month before surgery to reduce the risks of surgery.
What if I would prefer fuller or smaller breasts? A breast lift can be performed at the same time as breast reduction or augmentation with an implant with no

additional scarring. In the past, breast reduction or lift surgery could only be performed with a large “anchor” scar consisting of vertical and horizontal limbs. Savvy patients know that Dr Kishinevsky performs these surgeries with a small vertical only, “lollipop” scar, resulting in rounder, perkier breasts with a fuller cleavage. Breast reduction surgery relieves long-standing back and shoulder pain by removing excess breast tissue but still achieving a beautifully-shaped, lifted breast. Augmentation can be safely performed with saline or silicone implants to increase the volume of the breasts with the most natural texture and shape. During your consultation, you will have the chance to examine and feel both silicone and saline implants and to choose the style, size, and shape you feel the most comfortable with.
Which procedures help a patient to look younger or fresher for today’s competitive job market? Depending on a person’s needs, an eyelid lift or a face and neck lift go a long way towards erasing some of the more severe effects of aging. As the eyes are often described as “the windows to the soul,” removing a bit of excess, drooping skin and the loose fat that makes up the “bags”, whether above or below the eyes, often takes years off a man or woman’s appearance. Dark discoloration can be removed as well, all without leaving a visible scar. A face and neck lift is designed to clean up the jowls and excess skin around the neck, recreating a clean, tight jawline. The scars are hidden within the hairline, so only your hairdresser will know. The result is a natural, rested appearance, without looking fake or “done.” The results often last for more than ten years without a touch-up.
What if I prefer a less invasive approach? Injectable treatments have virtually no downtime and are effective in smoothing many of the lines that appear on the face with aging. Botox is a simple
Fairfield County Woman
Medical Professionals and easy treatment that eliminates horizontal forehead lines, vertical “scowl” lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and even vertical lines around the lips. The results last for 3-4 months, and the injections are so quick and painless, they can be done during your lunch break. A soft tissue filler, like Restylane or Juvederm can be used to restore volume to the face. They are effective in smoothing the folds around the mouth, restoring a youthful fullness to lips that have thinned with age, or to erase lines around the chin. The only side effects are injection site swelling or bruising that may last 2-3 days.
What are my options for reconstruction if I will be having a mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer? In this day and age, there are so many options for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer to look and feel their best, there is no reason that any woman should be left with a defect or an asymmetry. If a woman prefers reconstruction with her own tissues, the fat from the abdomen can be used to make a new breast with a TRAM flap. If a woman prefers a quicker recovery or a larger breast size, reconstruction with a saline or silicone implant may be an option. A new technique that has been receiving a lot of attention lately is fat transfer for breast reconstruction. Liposuction is performed on the abdomen or thighs and the fat is saved and used to make a new breast or to fill a lumpectomy defect. Fat transfer is simpler and has a quicker recovery time than traditional breast reconstruction and can be done several times to achieve a larger breast size. Also, if you have been considering breast reduction or breast lift surgery and you will be undergoing lumpectomy, your breast surgeon can work with your plastic surgeon to perform these procedures together. Our office will let you know if your insurance will cover breast reduction surgery.
What should I expect from my consultation? When you make an appointment to see Dr Kishinevsky, you will be greeted by a friendly, caring staff. Your wait time will be short, in a pleasant, supportive environment. Dr Kishinevsky will perform a thorough history and physical, then recommend the procedures that would best suit your needs. She will take the time to

explain the surgery in detail and to answer all your questions. You will be able to view before-and-after pictures of different surgeries and to examine a sample of any implant to be used. For patients who are concerned with their privacy, we have a fully accredited operating suite, to ensure your safety and comfort. You will be able to speak with patients who have had the same procedures done. You will be able to relax and rest easy, knowing that your treatment will be in welltrained, caring, and experienced hands.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MEDICINE By Michael E. Doyle, MD By 1914, years of research had lead to great discoveries in the area of thyroid treatment. That year, Eugene Hertoghe, was invited to teach New York’s top physicians how to diagnose all stages of hypothyroidism by carefully listening to their patients and looking for physical signs of low thyroid. No thyroid test had yet been developed… and none was needed. Hertoghe also taught that the low thyroid condition could be reversed by simply giving patients enough natural thyroid extract to restore their health. Dr. Hertoghe’s work was so impressive that it is credited with founding the specialty of endocrinology in America. So, by the early 20th century, hypothyroidism was a treatable condition. But things soon began to change. Over the following decades, a parade of laboratory tests were developed to help doctors make the diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Each new test was touted as the “right” way to diagnose low thyroid … until it was discarded and replaced by the next test. Unfortunately, these tests began to replace the art of medicine as doctors were taught to rely on the latest test and to ignore their clinical judgment. People with classic signs of low thyroid function began to suffer once again. Hypothyroid symptoms such as fatigue, low body temperature, depression, hair loss, weight gain, muscle pains and more were left untreated because the latest test said that the patient’s thyroid was OK. Soon synthetic thyroid treatments were also developed and were used to replace the natural extracts that had worked so well in the past. Unfortunately, new medications often didn’t work as well as the older “natural” medications. This might be because the natural thyroid extracts have always contained all four thyroid hormones (T1, T2, T3, and T4) while the synthetic treatment contains only one (T4). Some doctors such as Broda Barnes, MD refused to follow this “modern” approach and continued to rely on their examination and judgment and continued to use the “old-fashioned” natural thyroid ex-

tracts. By the 1950’s, William Jefferies, MD, was at Harvard working with adrenal hormones. Jefferies quickly recognized that cortisol (a natural form of cortisone), was so important that a person would quickly die without it. He also noted that even minor deficiencies of this hormone could cause many illnesses such as allergies, chronic fatigue
Remarkably, in the 1970’s Dr. Eugene Hertoghe’s grandson, Dr. Jacques Hertoghe, flew from Europe to study Dr. Barnes’ use of natural thyroid treatment. Hertoghe was looking for an effective treatment for his patients in Belgium and he was so impressed by the effectiveness of the natural thyroid extract that he began using it for all his patients. And Jacques Hertoghe was

Dr. Doyle has a practice in Stamford and can be reached at 203-324-4747. and autoimmune disease. Dr. Jefferies realized that small doses of cortisol could reverse many of these conditions. Jefferies’ most important contribution may have been the concept that this hormone is only harmful when patients take too much, and that small doses can actually improve overall health when needed.
not alone. The superiority of the oldfashioned thyroid treatments eventually became so clear that the president the Royal Thyroid Academy in London concluded that “the treatment of hypothyroidism is about to come full circle” by going back to the old fashioned approach that used a natural combination of thyroid hormones and did not rely
solely on test results. In the 1980’s, building on the work of his predecessors, Dr. J. Hertoghe was using combinations of hormonal therapies for many of his patients. This often included hormones for menopausal women. Dr. J. Hertoghe stated that estrogen and progesterone should only be used in their natural forms because the synthetic variants had dangerous side effects. This was at the time when most doctors were using synthetic progesterone (progestin) and horse estrogens to protect menopausal women from illnesses. About 20 years later, Dr. Hertoghe was proven right when large studies that showed that synthetic sex hormones made many women seriously ill. Sadly, the response of many doctors has been to stop using hormones. But recent evidence continues to support the safety of natural hormones. Recently, of over 50,000 European women were studied using natural (“bio-identical”) estrogen plus either a synthetic progestin or human progesterone. The women who took the artificial hormone had a 40% increase in the occurrence of breast cancer, while the women on bioidentical progesterone had breast cancer rates 10% below women who took nothing at all (and 50% lower than those taking synthetic progestin). It appears that while replacing menopausal hormones is not a panacea, women suffering from menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, poor sleep, bone thinning, etc. can find relief. And that the best and safest way appears to be using real hormones instead of the usual synthetics. In the end, a century of experience and scientific evidence shows that natural hormones can play a key role in restoring health for women and men. With a healthy balance of hormones combined with sound nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, great improvements in health are possible.

The Top 5 Reasons Why “Mothers-To-Be” Need Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
Dr. Risa Sloves practices with her husband Dr. Mark Joachim at their office Associates in Family Chiropractic and Natural Health Care, P.C. located at 156 East Ave. in Norwalk, CT. Dr. Sloves has been helping infants, children and adults obtain optimal health through natural chiropractic and wellness care for 20years and she is 1 of only 10 Chiropractic Physicians in Connecticut who is Board Certified in Pediatric and Maternity Care. Should you have further questions please contact Dr. Sloves at (203) 838-1555. By Dr. Risa M. Sloves Discovering the wonderful news that you are pregnant is both a time of joy and a time of anxiety. While pregnant, your body will begin to undergo many profound changes ranging from hormonal, biomechanical, and increased nutritional demands to other physical and psychological changes. As these changes occur, your body is likely to begin to feel uncomfortable and at times you may find yourself in extreme pain. But, just because you are pregnant does not mean that you need to suffer for nine months. So, what is a pregnant mom to do? Well, if you are suffering from low back pain or other common, but unnecessary, symptoms of pregnancy you are not alone. And, more and more pregnant women are choosing the non-invasive approach of chiropractic care to get through their pregnancy painfree! 1. Low Back Pain and Sciatica: Roughly one half of all mothers-to-be suffer from low back pain and doctors now agree that pregnancy related low back pain is associated with a condition called sacroiliac joint dysfunction (often referred to by chiropractors as SI subluxation). A subluxation is a misalignment of a joint and it creates irritation to the nerves and tissues in the surrounding area. The sacroiliac joints are created by the joining of the sacrum (the triangular bone that sits above our tailbone) and the bones that are on either side of the sacrum known as the inominate bones (the area many people consider the hips). Many hormones increase rapidly during pregnancy and some of
Fairfield County Woman
them relax the muscles, ligaments, and joints in the body. This allows the pelvis to open during delivery so that the baby’s head and shoulders can pass through the birth canal. But, this relaxation combined with weight gain, postural changes and stretching of the stomach muscles also disturbs the proper alignment of the spine and pelvis producing subluxations during pregnancy. It is these factors that increase the stress on the joints, nerves, and discs of the low back and pelvis and create pain. Sciatica, a common symptom that occurs during pregnancy, causes pain, tingling or numbness from the low back to the back of the leg and foot. Sciatica often occurs because of subluxations in the low back or pelvis along with muscle spasms in this area. Most cases of sciatica will quickly disappear with chiropractic care. 2. Headaches Due to the changes in a pregnant woman’s posture, extra stress to the spine and nervous system often occurs in the neck and shoulders. Subluxations of the neck are often the cause of neck pain and headaches during pregnancy and can be easily corrected with chiropractic care. 3.Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome causes painful tingling, burning and numbness into the wrist and hand and it occurs in approximately 20% of all pregnancies. Subluxation of the wrist bones often occurs during pregnancy because of hormonal changes and swelling of the wrist and hands and Chiropractic adjustments can help. 4. Mid-back and Rib Pain Pain in the midback that radiates into the ribcage is often due to subluxations that cause the nerves between the ribs to get irritated. Chiropractic adjustments remove the subluxations to decrease the pain. 5. A Breech Baby The “Webster Breech Turning Technique” is a non-invasive and gentle chiropractic technique that is highly successful in helping mothers with breech babies. The technique has been featured on the The Learning Channel’s “A Baby Story”, Mothering Magazine, and
Midwifery Today. The way it works is the following: The uterus is attached to the bones of the pelvis by ligaments. As long as the bones are in the right position and are moving properly, the ligaments should provide equal and balanced support for the uterus. If the pelvis is misaligned or subluxated, the ligaments become torqued and can cause a condition known as “in-utero constraint”. If the uterus is constrained as birth approaches, the baby is prevented from getting into the best possible position for birth and may end up breech. Chiropractors correct the subluxations of the pelvis and decrease spasms in specific muscles and ligaments that attach the uterus to the pelvic bones to help the baby turn. By this time you are probably wondering “ How do Chiropractors correct these subluxations ?” Chiropractors correct subluxations by performing chiropractic adjustments- a gentle procedure where the Chiropractor applies light pressure to the joints of the spine to restore normal motion and alignment,
decrease stress on the nervous system, and decrease pain and muscle spasm. Chiropractors who specialize in maternity care will often have special adjusting tables for the pregnant mother so that she can lie on her stomach without any pressure (they love these tables!) so that her spine can be examined. Chiropractors are the only doctors who are licensed to diagnose and correct subluxations and there are currently only 10 Chiropractic Physicians in Connecticut who have completed a 3 year post-doctorate degree to specialize in maternity and pediatric care. There are many benefits to chiropractic care, two of the most important are that chiropractic offers a drug-free approach to pain reduction and studies show that expectant mothers who receive chiropractic care are less likely to suffer from the dreaded “backlabor” and they have reduced labor time. Remember, pregnancy should be a time full of health and happiness! Don’t waste another minute suffering from pain or discomfort during your pregnancy. Work with a local Chiropractic Physician who has specialized training in maternity care so that you can experience the quality of life you and your unborn child deserve!

Make 2010 the year you actually keep your New Year’s Resolution! We are only a few weeks into January, and yes, you have already stumbled or completely broken your New Year’s Resolution. I’m here to tell you, “It’s not too late… you can do this!” According to a study by the University of Washington, more than 100 million Americans make New Year’s resolutions, and by the third week of January, the majority of those resolutions have been broken. With that, most people give up and put off making a change until another year. You do not have to join that group! The key to being successful at keeping your resolution is to set specific and realistic goals. “I will stop eating in front of the TV”, is much more achievable than a broad, “I will lose weight this year”. For someone with a sedentary life style, a resolution of “I will go walking 3 times a week” is much more realistic than joining a gym with the intent of working out five days a week for an hour or more. That goal is not only unrealistic, it can be dangerous and frustrating, and cause you give to up entirely. When a client comes to me with a laundry list of changes he wants to make, I ask him which is the most important to him and that is where we start. One change at a time. Small subtle changes are the key to lasting changes. With my clients who come in for weight loss, we begin with a realistic goal. If they have no fitness plan in place, we build up slowly. I ask “Can you commit to some form of exercise at least 10 minutes a day?” The sense of satisfaction at achieving these small goals encourages them to do more. In my private practice, a large percentage of my clients come to me for help for weight loss and to quit smoking. After setting their small achievable goals, I utilize hypnosis, N.L.P. (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and E.F.T. (Emotional Freedom Techniques). These are tools that allow for each client to access their internal power to make powerful and lasting changes. “Diets” require willpower… and willpower doesn’t help a lot late at night when your favorite junk food is calling your name. Hypnosis is a natural and effective technique for accessing the subconscious mind - the key to changing unwanted habits and behaviors. .When you tap into your true power: the amazing power of
Fairfield County Woman
your unlimited subconscious mind, you can eliminate some of the old messages like “the way to deal with your emotions is with food” and replace them with new healthy messages like “I deal with my emotions in healthy ways and food is simply to nourish my physical body”. Recently, I had two clients come to me for weight loss. Both of these clients are excellent examples of how diets don’t work. Both of these clients had lost weight on their own, one lost 100 pounds using a diet; the other had gastric bypass surgery, yet both they were both sliding back into old patterns. They came to me for help in making lasting internal changes. Trying to quit smoking using willpower, gums, patches, pills, etc. also doesn’t work for most people. Those are all external changes. Unless and until you tap into your internal power to change, some stressful event or trigger could have you reaching for that pack without even thinking about it. The late Peter Jennings is a perfect example: he had quit smoking for many years and then the stress of 911 became too much to bear and he went back to smoking. Sadly, he died of lung cancer a few years later. As a former smoker, I understand what it takes to successfully quit smoking and stay a non- smoker. I utilize hypnosis, E.F.T. and N.L.P. to arm my clients with the tools they need to leave as a non-smoker after one session, with a reinforcement session about a week later. These tools and techniques allow people to stay in control, never having the need or desire to go back to smoking. Hypnosis, E.F.T. and N.L.P. are very effective techniques to help successfully keep whatever New Year’s Resolution you may make. Whether your goal is losing weight, quitting smoking, exercising more, drinking less (or quitting altogether), getting out of debt or getting organized; the key to making lasting changes in your life is to be specific in your goals and focus on one goal at a time. I wish you the best in making lasting changes in your life this year! If I can be of assistance in helping you to set your goals and stick with your resolutions please give me a call. With offices in Danbury, Ridgefield and Norwalk, I am but a short drive away!

Why settle for good hair when you can have Great Hair!
Angela Cosmai and Daniel Nault Give your Hair the Star Treatment
Angela Cosmai is the colorist to whom A-list celebrities and socialites turn to for hair color and healthy hair care. She is the one other colorists recommend when it comes to fixing over-bleached or brassy hair into silky, natural looking tresses. She works with her clients to find the flattering, believable shades of hair color that work with your natural coloring. Angela believes in protecting the hair from harsh chemicals that is typically found in hair color, instead at her salon they use exclusive hair custom color without ammonia which helps to protect the hair. She also uses non ammonia product for covering gray which causes less damage and requires less upkeep. Her exclusive coloring technique is also safe for pregnant women.
FAIRFIELD COUNTY WOMAN SPECIAL
C o s mai’s approach to hair coloring is subtle. “Most women do more than is necessary” Angela says. “They figure if they’re paying a lot of money for a change, the color had better be noticeable. Actually, I think the best hair should not be overt; it should look like it’s growing from the scalp, not like it’s been slapped on your hair.
Great Hair Equals a Great YOU
Angela Cosmai has earned her celebrity status as the Hair Repair Guru. She’s the one you go to when you’ve done a real number on your hair. Whether it’s too many years of over processing or one memorable bad dye job, damaged hair tends to grab color unevenly or make strange color combinations, and that is when it’s time to turn your locks over to seasoned expert, Cosmai. Her hair repair process involves restoring the health of the hair first and then utilizing a combination of judicious highlight-
ing to cover roots and darker “low lights” throughout the hair with a vegetable dye in a shade close to the natural color.
Her products are available at her salons or online at www.angelacosmai.com.
All Natural Hair Care Products
Angela’s Connecticut clients had been urging her for years to open up a salon in Stamford. The salon offers a full range of hair services, keratin treatments, eye lash extensions and makeup consultations. Each staff member goes through an intense hair color training course before being allowed to take on clients. Each week NYC hair stylists Elizabeth Khawaja, Linda Nicholas, Ron Shepard and Elena Quaglino visit the salon so that her Connecticut clients can benefit from their trend setting expertise. The Angela Cosmai Stamford salon is a warm and friendly place where everyone is treated as a star. Her staff is caring and attentive and puts great emphasis on hair and scalp treatments to maintain hair shine and luster. Before you spend anymore money on your hair, visit Angela Cosmai Salon for a complimentary consultation. 1026 High Ridge Road, Stamford CT. 203-461-8252. Angela splits her time between her Stamford, Connecticut salon and Pierre Michel in NYC.
Over the years, Cosmai’s clients repeatedly asked her to recommend home products to help maintain their color. But nothing in the market met her specifications. So, with considerable “clinical” experience already behind her, she and her husband, Daniel Nault created the Angela Cosmai Color Protective Hair Care System—a full line of hair care products, wonderfully mild, cruelty-free products, and rich in natural botanicals. Not only do Cosmai’s color clients swear by these products but so do women who have never colored their hair but still seek to give it the shine and luster every woman wants! Her products contain natural ingredients such as Canadian Cedar Leaf Oil, Linden Extract, Wheat Protein, Avocado Oil, French Clay, Aloe Vera and Lavender Oil. You will see a difference after the first use, even on hair that is coarse and over-processed. Also found in Angela’s hair care system is her European Treatment for thinning hair, especially formulated to restore the health and beauty of your hair.

Managing weight:
Finding Your Path with a Naturopath
The number of overweight and obese individuals has grown dramatically in recent years and has reached epidemic proportions. As demonstrated in the table, more than two-thirds of adults in the United States struggle with weight management. Aside from cosmetic and self-image issues, excessive weight poses a significant threat to many bodily systems and functions. The joints are strained and have decreased functional life as a consequence of having to carry a heavier load. The heart has to pump blood harder in order to push it through the miles of blood vessels that penetrate inches of extra fat. Additionally, adipose tissue (fat) is capable of producing hormones that affect the metabolic balance of the entire body. The combination of the increased physical demand on the heart with the alteration of lipid and hormonal profiles leads to a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease, the number one killer of Americans. Although excessive fat is harmful, we must keep in mind that adipose tissue is an essential component of the human body. As a species, we have developed the ability to store extra energy as fat, which serves both as our insulation—preventing excessive heat loss—and as our energetic insurance in times of food shortage. Because fat is such an important part of the body, once formed, it has the ability to preserve itself. With food no longer a scarcity, bodies that have been conditioned to save energy as fat are now over-accumulating it. Fat cells, or adipocytes, are multifunctional—not only do they store energy, but they also possess significant synthetic ability. For example, adipocytes are able to transform testosterone (the male sex hormone) into estrogen (the female sex hormone), which is responsible for certain feminization characteristics in obese males. Excessive body fat also impairs the body’s ability to use insulin, increasing the risk of developing diabetes. Finally, adipose tissue contributes to the inflammatory status of the body, altering the course of multiple physiological and disease processes and leading to an overall decreased quality of life. Hence, it is clear that maintenance of a healthy level of body fat is essential to living a long and vigorous life. Despite the many tools that have been developed to
promote weight loss, American society continues to grow heavier. This is because the “one-size-fits-all” approach of many diet programs does not take into account each person’s individuality. Research has shown that we all process our foods differently. For instance, some individuals are less able to process carbohydrates than others; this may be due to genetic predisposition and/or environmental and lifestyle factors. While certain people seem to store every calorie that they consume, others having difficulty keeping enough weight on their bodies. Metabolic differences account for the fact that a high-complex carbohydrate/ low-fat diet may be beneficial for one person but detrimental to another, who may be best suited to a high-protein and fat/ lowercarbohy¬drate plan. For these reasons, a thorough evaluation of each person is essential in order to create an optimal weight loss/maintenance plan.
Five Simple Tips for Healthful Eating 1. When hungry, grab a glass of water. Many people confuse thirst with hunger.
While many weight loss programs are potentially effective, indiscriminate selection of a plan may be futile, or, indeed, dangerous. Some diets can induce rapid weight loss, which stresses the body’s metabolic and elimination pathways. Naturopathic physicians are trained to perform a comprehensive assessment of every patient; this includes taking a detailed history in order to under¬stand the physical, social, environmental, and emotional components of a person’s life. Diagnostic tests, including blood work, may be used to aid in this evaluation. The physicians at Northeast Natural Health create weight management programs that are tailored to the metabolic needs and lifestyle requirements of each patient. In order to facilitate this process, Northeast Natural Health has an ongoing weight management support group, at which clients can share their frustrations and successes and provide encouragement to one another.

2. Add colorful vegetables to your meals. In addition to being visually pleasing, the colors of vegetables are due to healthful nutrients and phytochemicals. 3. Savor every bite. Take time to experience the pleasure of eating, and stop eating when you cease to enjoy the food. Also, eating slowly gives the body enough time to sense fullness, which usually takes 20 minutes after the beginning of the meal. 4. Eat only until you are 80% full. This is the Okinawan proverb of ‘harahachibu’ and is a simple means of promoting healthful eating. 5. Find a support network. Being part of a group of individuals with shared concerns and struggles helps to ease the difficulty of making major lifestyle changes.

Law Professional WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES tunately, despite efforts by the Department of Motor Vehicles, there may still be many vehicles on the road that are uninsured, and with the current state of the economy, that number may grow. Your health and well being insure that your family and your ability to function at your job, are protected. If you become injured by an uninsured driver, you need to be protected.
Presented by Adele R. Jacobs, Esq. When you purchase an insurance policy either for your home or automobile, it is important for you to be an informed consumer. Outlined below are some critical issues that could afford you and your family more complete insurance protection.
CAR INSURANCE
A. Medical Payment Coverage Whether you are a first time buyer of car insurance, or you are seeking to renew your existing insurance, it is important to review the policy for its terms, conditions and the available endorsements. Medical Payment Coverage is what is offered as a replacement to the former “No Fault” insurance coverage. It is optional coverage, but something that you should seriously consider. Medical Payment Coverage affords you protection for medical bills that you might incur as a result of being injured in an accident, and for a relatively small premium, you can obtain such coverage. Even if you have health insurance, it is an endorsement that should be considered, because in recent years, many health insurance companies seek reimbursement from the insured for treatment for accident-related injuries out of settlements and recoveries. Medical Payment Coverage is not something that is reimbursed, and may help to protect you, and your family, from financial strain related to accident-related injuries. B. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage 1. Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM Coverage) If you are involved in an accident with another vehicle that is not insured, having Uninsured Motorist Coverage may protect you if you are injured. For example, Jane Smith is driving on the Post Road, when she is hit by another car that speeds away from the scene. She is injured, and has the protection of her UM Coverage, which will hopefully compensate her for her injuries and her pain and suffering. It is important to purchase as much of this coverage as possible, as in some instances, it may be your only avenue of compensation if you are injured. Unfor-
24 JANUARY/FEBRUARY
2. Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM Coverage) Underinsured Motorist Coverage is triggered when you are involved in an accident with another vehicle that has inadequate insurance for the injuries that you have suffered. For example, another vehicle’s minimum limits of $20,000 of insurance for bodily injury, may not be sufficient to compensate you for your injuries. UIM Coverage affords you protection in a scenario where you are injured, and should be compensated over and above the minimum limits. It is a provision in your policy that allows you to seek compensation from your own insurance company, for damages over and above what the offending vehicle has for limits, of course, depending upon the severity of your injuries. A common misconception is that when you buy bodily injury limits, you and/or whomever is driving your vehicle at the time of an accident, are covered as well, however, that is not correct. Your bodily injury limits are triggered only if you injure someone else. Your Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage covers YOU if you are injured through someone else’s negligence. For example, Joe Jones is driving on I-95, and is struck by another car from behind, seriously injuring Joe Jones. Joe is sent to the hospital, and has a long recovery with permanent injuries. The car that struck Joe only had $20,000 bodily injury limits, however, Joe’s medical bills alone, total over $25,000, and Joe has no health insurance and no medical payment coverage, to pay those bills. If Joe has Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage greater than minimum limits of $20,000, then he can make a claim against his own insurance company for damages, including his pain and suffering for fair and reasonable damages over and above what he collected from the other driver. It is critical that your UM/UIM limits are at least as great as your bodily injury limits, and that your bodily injury limits are more than the minimum, if affordable. In the example, if Joe’s UM/UIM coverage was only $20,000, then he would be limited to making a claim solely for the other driver’s insurance coverage. In other words, if your UM/UIM limits are equal to the other driver’s bodily injury limits, then your UM/UIM limits are not accessible, and you are paying for an endorsement that is going to be
triggered by an accident with an uninsured driver only, as opposed to someone who has inadequate limits. We all think that this can never happen to us, until it does. Be an informed consumer, and sit down with your insurance agent armed with the knowledge of these types of endorsements so that you can ask the right questions. Often, people are unaware of either Medical Payment Coverage because it was never offered to them, or of the need for adequate UM/UIM limits, so that they are fully protected. It is pointless to pay for endorsements that don’t fully protect you. C. Conversion Coverage Many companies offer conversion coverage, but only if you, as the customer, ask for it. It is coverage that allows you to make a claim under your own UM/UIM policy limits, even if your limits are less than the limits of the policy of the person who caused the accident. Conversion coverage serves to greatly enhance the amount of insurance protection available to you and your family. In the example above, if you were involved in an accident with someone who had the minimum of $20,000 bodily injury limits, and you only held $20,000 of UM/UIM coverage, without conversion coverage, you would only be able to be compensated for the maximum of $20,000. With conversion coverage, you would have a total of $40,000 available to you. Again, it is something that you should be informed of, so that you can ask the right questions of your insurance agent. D. Raising of premiums Many of us are reluctant to make a claim against our own insurance policy, because we are fearful that our premiums will increase as a result of making such a claim. Insurance companies are not allowed to raise premiums simply because a UM/UIM claim is filed. While insurance companies can raise premiums for any number of “business related” reasons, the law prohibits any increase in premiums based solely on the filing of a UM/UIM claim. Again, you must understand that, as a consumer, you already purchased this UM/UIM protection when you purchased your liability policy for your own automobile. Although we hope to never have to use it, since none of us ever wish to be involved in an automobile accident, we must understand we have this protection available, so we can better protect our loved ones. In many instances, the protection afforded by the UM/UIM coverage is our last, and sometimes only line of defense for injuries sustained as a result of an automobile accident, caused by an uninsured/underinsured individual.
PROPERTY INSURANCE
Whether you rent or own your residence, it is critical that you have as much property insurance as possible. As a rentor, you are not protected for your personal property by any insurance that the landlord may have. As an owner, it is important to know your insurance options. A. Replacement Cost Coverage Replacement cost coverage is insurance that will fully compensate you up to the amount of your limits, to replace what you lost, whether it be by water, fire, smoke, or any other type of damage. For certain items of property, the insurance company will compensate you for the depreciated value of the item, until you replace it, and then they will pay you the balance of the cost of the item. B. Actual Cash Value Actual Cash Value coverage is insurance that will compensate you for the depreciated value of your property, as it is valued at the time of the loss. Its name is deceiving in that some people may think that this type of coverage will compensate them for what they “actually paid” for the item. The companies utilize a depreciation schedule, and you will only be compensated for a small percentage on the dollar of what you actually paid. This will not make you “whole”, and may result in a loss for you financially. C. Keeping good records Regardless of the type of insurance that you are able to purchase, it is important for you to keep good records regarding the property kept in your home. If possible, photograph the valuables, and place those photos in a fire proof safe, or in a safety deposit box. If you make a major purchase, obtain an appraisal for the item, and submit it to the insurance company so that they may consider it to be a “scheduled” item, and so that in the event of a loss, you may be fully compensated for it. Scheduled items may include jewelry, furs, and/or fine arts. In conclusion, be an informed consumer, and ask questions of your insurance agent or company. Even if you have already purchased your policy, you may make changes and/or additions to it during the term of that policy. If you or your loved ones have been involved in an accident and have sustained serious personal injuries, or have suffered property damage due to fire, water, or smoke, call the Law Offices of Adele R. Jacobs, to speak to an attorney who will help guide you through the process of being fully and fairly compensated.

Business Connections LLC: Bringing Businesses from Surviving to Thriving Agency Partners with Melissa Diamond Public Relations
This article is presented by Connections, LLC Every business has its own mission, goals and dreams. The mission of Connections Public Relations and Special Events is to assist other companies in realizing those goals and dreams. During these difficult economic times, it is especially hard for many nonprofit organizations and merchants to meet their target income—or even keep their doors open. Through fundraising events, strategic alliances, media placements and promotional campaigns, Connections works to not only prop those doors, but stimulate the flow of revenue through them. A resident of over thirty years, Westport and its surrounding towns are owner Robin Scarella’s passion and expertise. She is invested in her clients from the onset of their relationship because of her pre-existing dedication to the local area. She cares deeply about the people and places in Southern Connecticut, and the success of her business is attributed to the network she continues to build every day. In other words, the key to Connections is just that—their connections. Entering its sixth year of business, Connections is proud of its client roster. From renowned names like Tiffany & Co. and Donald Trump to luxury spas and smaller boutiques, Connections customizes campaigns to suit each client’s personality and agenda with the determination to reach their full potential through guidance and contacts. The client’s vision of expansion is accomplished by creating a compelling, compassionate, creative and fiscally successful publicity program. Connections works to develop, write and place stories that promote the strengths that differentiate organizations from their competition. In addition, Connections brainstorms, plans, advertises and executes events that attract new customers— encouraging them to become

Angela Cosmai In the pressure-cooker, trend-aminute world that is New York, Angela Cosmai stands out as a singular figure. A hair colorist-contrarian, she is an outspoken pragmatist who avoids this season’s or any season’s trends. The beauty industry cites Cosmai as a color corrector. But those who know her work beyond its reputation regard her as something more--an artist with tints. Some have read about her in Vogue, Glamour, and Allure. Others come by way of recommendation from fellow colorists, often to mend a too-platinum tint that’s turned to straw. All her life, Angela Cosmai has been tangled up in hair. Her mother ran “Funny Girl Salon” in Brooklyn, New York. In her early twenties, she got a job as right hand to Robert Renn, then one of New York’s superstar colorists, and worked with him for seven years. Practicing a less is more philosophy, Cosmai’s forte is finding the believable, perfect tint. Angela has been voted Best Hair Colorist of NYC by New York Magazine and Color Corrective Specialist by Vogue. When not traveling to foreign places to take care of her clients or working in NYC at Pierre Michel Salon, Angela can be found at her salon here in Stamford, CT (203)461.8252. www.angelacosmai.com

Growing up I always had a passion for sports. I later created an interest in the business field as well while taking numerous business classes in high school. When it came time for me to decide what to study in college I was fortunate enough to come across an area that combined both of my fields of interest. While attending Springfield College I majored in Sports Management and minored in Business Management. Coinciding with my studies I was also a member of the Springfield College field hockey team, where I was named captain my senior year. I credit my entire college experience, both in the classroom and on the field, for my hard work ethic and drive to continue to progress in my profession. Currently I am the Ticket Operations Manager for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. My job is to make sure that our fans’ ticketing processes run as smooth as possible from the start of their order until they enter into the arena. I handle all ticket processing from full season ticket plans, to mini ticket packages, to group outings. Being the top affiliate for the New York Islanders, the Sound Tigers offer an affordable night out for the entire family and the opportunity to see the future stars of the NHL today. Maryam Hedayatzadeh, M.D. During my undergraduate training, I realized that I wanted to help people and make a difference in their lives; becoming a physician would allow me to do just that. Once I entered medical school, my clinical rotation in women’s health interested me the most. Being able to educate, treat and work with women has been very fulfilling for me. I chose to continue to be an advocate for women’s health by becoming an OB/GYN; by doing so, I am able to care for women and have the fortunate ability to educate and empower them. Developing Leadership Skills Helps Teens Succeed Teenagers who exhibit the personality traits of a leader are more likely to succeed in college and at their first job, studies show. A recent research paper produced by St. John’s University concludes that “college students and early career workers can benefit from continual leadership development in order to prepare for the business world.” The study, sponsored by Entrepreneur magazine and conducted by St. John’s business professors Larry W. Boone and Monica S. Peborde, shows the importance of learning effective leadership skills such as establishing credibility, managing time, being proactive, empowering others to act, and networking. Graduates of Generation.Next, a leadership training program for teenagers, report progress toward mastering all of these qualities and more after attending the three-day immersion course developed by Dale Carnegie Training. Generation.Next focuses on giving high school students the skills they need to tackle the real world of college and beyond, helping teens develop leadership habits that will last a lifetime. The program focuses on the Five Drivers of Personal Success – Building Self-confidence, Enhancing Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skill Development, Teamwork and Leadership Skills, and Effective Attitude Management. Thousands of shy, uncertain young people have entered the Generation.Next program and emerged with a new attitude of confidence and eagerness to take on challenges and reach for more meaningful goals. “I feel like I understand how to deal with people better now,” said Alex N., a recent graduate. He described the course as “life-changing” and said it had inspired him to develop better relationships with his teachers, earn better grades, worry less and become a leader at his school. Samantha K., another recent graduate, described her transition from a self-conscious, fearful wallflower into a confident public speaker after participating in Generation.Next. “This class has been amazing. My self-confidence has skyrocketed!” she exclaimed after delivering a speech on the final day of class.

Internationally acclaimed song writer Daniel Nault, has created a masterful blend of music that entertains children while introducing them to the English or French languages. Your family will learn easy children’s songs and before you know it, your kids will be singing the beautiful language of love. Any of Daniel’s five award winning CD’s or tapes make thoughtful and precious gifts for anyone with kids! Music and singing provide the educational platform for parents and their children to spend quality time together - it’s more interactive than television. Families are introduced to easy-to-learn French lyrics, and those with a basic understanding of the language can re-fresh and reinforce their skills. Daniel, a French-Canadian who has become known as “the singer with the soft voice”, came to the United States 25 years ago. He spent 9 years in Florida before migrating to Stamford 16 years ago where he came up with this novel music approach: young kids learning the art of a second language through entertaining songs and music.
niel Nault “Time-less favorites which delight the ear and invite children (and grown-ups) to sing along.” Linda Levine of the Teachers Room chil dren’s boutique. “Daniel’s lush acoustic arrangements provide a comfy environment for these free language exercises - and make for soothing quiet-time listening whether you’re linguistically motivated or not.” “Daniel’s music - a joy to teach with or listen to.” Deborah Maher, voice teacher and interna tional opera singer. “The album is lovely, with its heavy emphasis on the acoustic guitar and Daniel’s soothing voice.” “Parents will enjoy playing these songs for their children, while teachers could use the songs individually for classroom atmosphere.”
“Parents will enjoy playing these songs for their children, while teachers could use the
songs individually for classroom atmosphere.”
Through the years, Daniel has released 2 more cd’s. One made of old standards with a French flair, of course, that he simply named “Dreams” and the other, a collection of Religious songs that he recorded with the Holy Spirit Church Choir in Stamford, CT entitled “My Spiritual Legacy”. Daniel is now performing on week-ends at the Roger Sherman Inn in New Canaan (203.966.4541). Daniel and his wife Angela are both owners of the Angela Cosmai Salon here in Stamford.
