TIRED OF NOT SUCCEEDING THE WAY YOU DESERVE ?

By: Bret Dunbar When I was in college a decade or so ago I remember something that my coach said to me after a particularly bad loss our team had received and delivered by a league rival. He said before we look outside and blame poor game day weather, better equipment or field during practice days, or easier overall schedule for the Season, it was time to look at ourselves. As a professional in business today, his words seem to ring more true to me now more than ever – sometimes we can be our own barrier to our success…that can stop us from succeeding more than anything else. I have found through my business life so far that there are some key barriers that get in our way between where we are now, and what success would look and feel like. The first is Resignation…the feeling that we are willing to surrender to the current state of affairs and cling to things as they are. You’ve given up. “This is it… I’ve come this far and I’m resigned to my fate…there’s nothing left for me.” It stops us from moving forward. I know many of our clients come to us because they’re tired of accepting the status quo, but are not sure what sales changes need to be made. They just know SOMETHING has to shift.

Fairfield County Woman

There is a story about an elephant in the zoo that was tethered by chains that limited his range of travel. This is the reason I don’t like to go to circuses ,even today, by the way. However, after months and months of trying to go further, he became conditioned to the idea that this was his spatial limit. After awhile he stopped trying to break the boundaries of the chain and accept his limitations. Later, the chain was replaced with twine, but the elephant was incapable of breaking even this fragile link, because he believed he was incapable of going beyond the perimeter. How many of us in our businesses today, in this challenging business climate we all operate in, are acting like this elephant ? Having No Priorities is the second barrier. Highly successful people have a well balanced life – they work hard… play hard… live hard. People who are not so successful seem to be spending all of their time working. What’s with THAT ? One might say they have (20) years of experience, but what they really have is one year of experience (20) times, and keep doing the same things over and over again, whether those things are a priority or not in them being

successful in their business. The third is Need for Approval…fear of rejection. People like this seek approval and don’t see Sales as a profession which is designed to get you to the bank, and to get your financial needs met. We get mixed up and use Sales as a place to get our approval needs satisfied. People like this are faced with the dilemma of , “ Do I want her/his money or do I want his/her approval ?” Unfortunately, too many times we could pick the wrong one – we fear rejection more than anything else. It is like Catch 22 – one comes into Sales because they need approval and fear rejection. Of course, all these fears can turn into

Sales Training Programs.

strengths…it’s really up to us. And, we work with people, everyday, who are frustrated with living with this feeling and are on a mission to change it, and deliver more financial flexibility to their lives. I look back at that coach of mine today, and see what wisdom he was departing to us on that cold, rainly day where we took a loss. What he said to us then, stands today. Sometimes we can get tired of not succeeding the way we think we should…that’s typical. All of us can feel that way at times. The key is do we stay tethered to a piece of string because that’s the way it has always been, or do we choose to succeed and break our special limits and barriers ?

SEVERE BACK OR LEG PAIN?

Local Doctors Explain How Disc Damage Occurs and What You Can Do to Repair and Heal the Damage Without Drugs or Surgery Dr. Risa Sloves practices with her husband, Dr. Mark Joachim at their office Associates in Family Chiropractic and Natural Health Care, P.C. located at 156 East Ave. in Norwalk, CT. Dr. Sloves has been helping infants, children and adults obtain optimal health through natural chiropractic and wellness care for over 20years and she is 1 of only 10 Chiropractic Physicians in Connecticut who is Board Certified in Pediatric and Maternity Care. Dr. Joachim is the first and only physician in CT with Advanced Certification in The BioSET Allergy Elimination Technique, a non-invasive, drug-free and shot-free health care method that can permanently eliminate food and environmental allergies. They also are trained in Spinal Decompression with the DRX9000 and acupuncture. Should you have further questions please contact the doctors at (203) 838-1555. More information is available at www.ctchiropractic.com, www.eliminate-my-allergies.com, or www. ctspinalpaincenter.com. By Dr. Risa Sloves “The treatments are very comfortable and relaxing. Its incredible! What a great alternative to surgery or painkillers.” Maria C. I heard of the DRX 9000 Spinal Decompression from a friend and was very interested in treatment because of severe low back pain. After having a lumbar MRI, I found out that my back was a real mess. I had an L5 disc herniation that was bulging to the left and the disc was also degenerating. I felt like I was being restrained due to the pain. I was not able to be active and I could not perform my regular work and home activities. In the past, I had tried occasional chiropractic care but the relief was temporary. I knew that there was no way I wanted back surgery. I started doing the DRX 9000 with Dr. Joachim and within about 5 visits I began to feel much less pain. Dr. Joachim and his staff were great and made me feel very comfortable. I would highly recommend this treatment to others. Don’t wait! Find out what is causing the problem and see if the DRX 9000 could help you. Dr. Joachim and his staff will explain everything in plain English. If the DRX9000 is for you-get it done. It will change your life!!! After doing the DRX 9000 treatment with Dr. Joachim I can honestly say I got my life back! Carlos F. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 40% of adults will have had back pain in the past month and approximately 85% will have back pain at some point in their lives. But, just because something like back pain is so common, it does

6 JULY/AUGUST

not mean there are not potential solutions out there for people who suffer. Not long ago, it was thought that it was muscles that caused the back pain…NOT TRUE! The latest studies on back pain indicate that the majority of cases are likely caused by damage to the discs and joints in your spine. The good news is that there is highly effective, non-invasive technology that can help both! So, to find out the best way to treat your low back, let’s review five commom back pain myths… Myth#1: Back pain goes away quickly- Typically, a patient would hurt his back, go see the M.D., get a prescription for some pain pills, and then never return so the MDs thought they were cured. But when studies decided to follow up with these patients, they found out that a whopping 75% of patients still had back pain a year later. Myth #2: Pills (NSAIDs and muscle relaxers) are safe and effective for your back pain- Taking this type of approach could lead to serious complications with your health. NSAIDs is an abbreviation for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. People with back problems generally suffer over many years

and even decades. NSAIDs can cause bleeding in your stomach and intestines and lead to ulcers or kidney injury which increases with the number of pills consumed over years. Myth#3: Bed rest is good for you- Inactivity will actually make back pain much, much worse. It will de-condition your spinal muscles and make them weaker-which will mean more pain and less function for you. Myth#4: The pain is the problem- Pain is a signal that there is something wrong with your body. It’s kind of like a fire alarm. It’s not the fire. When a house is burning, do the firefighters just show up to cut the fire alarm wires and expect the inferno will stop? Of course not! But that’s just how many people approach back pain-cut the fire alarm (use a drug, shot, etc.). If you want to begin to solve your back problem, you need to determine the cause and treat it properly not just get rid of the pain. Myth #5: Age is not the primary cause of degeneration (arthritis)- We are often asked by patients, “Doctor how did this happen?” referring to damage discovered to the discs in the spine. Most have been told that age is the primary cause of the degeneration in their discs and joints and this is NOT TRUE! Age is a factor, but not the cause of it. When evaluating a patient’s MRI, we will often point out all of the normal discs in the patient’s spine in addition to the damaged disc(s). Now here is a question for you: Regardless of the patient’s age, why are some of the discs damaged and others normal? Aren’t the discs the same age? Of course they are. If age is the primary reason discs degenerate then they would all be degenerative since they are the same age. However, this is usually not the case. Usually it is just one or two damaged discs that are causing your pain. So what is the main reason why degenerative disc disease occurs? Well, the answer unfortunately is that you did not properly maintain your spine as you aged. During our lifetime we all have trauma to the spine: small things like strains from lifting or poor posture to major trauma such as car accidents. These injuries, although they may seem minor at the time, cause problems in muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints and/or discs and set the stage for future degenerative disc disease. The problem is that most people don’t have these minor injuries checked and they just wait for the pain to go away. The result is similar to never brushing and flossing your teeth…they will start to rot and decay. A rotting spine can

seriously ruin your life! The “sequence of events of degenerative disc disease” : When trauma around the spine occurs it causes abnormal motion between two spinal bones (vertebrae). The disc in between the two bones loses a lot of its blood supply after about age twenty and relies on normal motion to pump blood, oxygen and nutrients into the disc to stay healthy. A lack of normal motion results in dehydration and destruction of the disc. As the disc loses height, the pressure inside the disc increases and the disc starts to “bulge, herniate or extrude”. If it gets bad enough it will bulge against a nerve or the spinal cord which can cause even more debilitating pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. Also, as the disc height decreases, it causes the vertebrae to get closer which can “pinch” the nerves and cause the joints to rub together which causes arthritis. Once this degenerative process starts, it continues to spread to the joints and discs above and below and it causes Multi-Disc Level Degeneration. Remember-this process is due to motion dysfunction and it takes time to do all of this damage which is why it is often blamed on age. Age is a factor-NOT the main cause. Luckily, this process can be prevented, slowed, or even stopped depending on where in the process it is treated. And, many times, even spinal conditions with severe damage that were once thought to be surgical in nature, can at the very least be improved non-surgically with breakthrough technology in which we specialize. Almost 5 years later and I still don’t have pain in my back! “I am writing this thank you to Dr. Joachim. I have had back problems from my neck to my low back-spinal stenosis, arthritis, bone spurs, disc problems, etc. I have been a patient of Associates In Family Chiropractic for many years and have always been able to play golf several times a week, exercise daily, and commute into New York City to teach even though I am 75 years old. But, a few years ago, I had a fall and afterwards I began having significant spinal pain. Unfortunately, my usual treatments were not enough to keep me out of pain. I even convinced my wife to buy a new mattress for $1,500, but the back pain persisted. Dr. Joachim suggested that I have an MRI on my back to determine if I was a candidate for a new machine for spinal decompression called the DRX 9000. He explained that this was the best technology to actually heal my spine especially the discs and to take pressure off of my spinal nerves without the potentially severe side effects of drugs and surgery. Happily, I can say I am still pain-free for almost 5 yearss! I am able to get up each morning, do my exercises, swim onehalf mile 3 times a week and I play golf at least twice a week! Not bad for 75! I am grateful to Dr. Joachim for suggesting the DRX 9000-it was the best treatment I could have received and I have already recommended it to others!” Wallace S.

Medical Did you know...A 2005 article in the prestigious orthopedic journal “Spine” studied patients who suffered with lower back pain and/or sciatica. Even thought 99% of the patients were told that they would get moderate or great improvement in their quality of life after the surgery, in reality 39% did not even have minimally significant improvement. AND…There’s actually a term called”Failed Back Surgery Syndrome.” The greatest risk factor for having a second back operation is having one in the first place. BUT there ARE emergency cases where surgery will be your only and best option such as when a disc compresses the nerves so badly in your lower back that you lose bowel or bladder function. It’s important to be aware of these types of emergencies, but 99% will never experience these. So, if bed-rest, drugs, injections, and surgery are not good options, what should you do for severe back or leg pain? A small fraction of the approximately 1,000,000 health care providers in the U.S. are using new technology with a treatment called Spinal Decompression and the device is called the DRX9000™ . Here’s what the DRX9000™ it looks like...

“My back pain was so bad that even simple things, such as getting dressed, putting on socks and tying shoes became very difficult. I would occasionally miss work due to pain and also gave up exercise all together. I relied on family members to help with dinner, laundry, cleaning, and shopping so I wouldn’t have to move. I have tried anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, and pain management specialist, none of which seemed to work. I was very afraid that I would need surgery, but then I saw an article about the DRX 9000. When I started treatments, I noticed a difference after my first session and I kept on feeling better. The DRX treatments were so comfortable and at times I was so relaxed that I would fall asleep. I have already recommended the DRX treatment to others. I tell people that the DRX treatments helped me tremendously and I am finally able to live a normal, pain-free life.” Robin W. This technology is giving many patients with low back pain a gentle, relaxing, non-invasive and non-surgical option. The DRX9000 succeeds by repositioning the disc, enlarging the disc space, and repairing and strengthening the disc structure. These dramatic disc improvements have

been demonstrated on patients’ pre- and posttreatment MRIs. The “DRX 9000” Works For… • Back pain and Sciatica • Herniated and/or bulging discs (single or multiple) • Degenerative disc disease • A relapse or failure following surgery (as long as there is no metal in the spine) • Stenosis and Facet syndromes Since every single patient’s case is different, it is important to remember that although you may have been diagnosed with one of the above conditions, you may not be a candidate for spinal decompression. In our office, we conduct a thorough consultation and examination, and review each patient’s x-rays and MRI reports. Even after review of these results, we may recommend additional testing such as a Bone Density study to rule out severe osteoporosis or extra x-rays of the low back to make sure the spine is completely stable. It is only after complete analysis of each patient’s examination findings and test results that we can make a clinical decision as to whether you may be a good candidate for this type of treatment. Patients who are pregnant,

patients with a history of cancer in the low back or pelvic region, a history of abdominal aneurysms, severe osteoporosis, or prior surgery with the implantation of metal screws, plates, etc. are those patients who would definitely not be candidates and who would therefore need to consider other options for low back pain treatment that we may be able to provide or else we would need to refer you to another physician. Until recently, the advice for many of you suffering with pain was to try: Stretching, physical therapy, pain medications, cortisone injections, back surgery or “live with it”. If you are like most, none of these have worked for you long term. Now, you owe it to yourself to not wait any longer! If you would like to schedule an appointment for a free screening o determine whether you are a candidate for spinal decompression please call Dr. Risa Sloves and Dr. Mark Joachim located at 156 East Avenue in Norwalk at (203) 838-1555. www.ctspinalpaincenter.com

“I had severe pain at my right hip going down my leg to the ankle, making going up the stairs painful and pain on rising from a seating position. I had to wait a few minutes before I could walk and when I took the first few steps it was very painful. At times I would have to go upstairs hanging on the railing with both feet on each step. I really did not know what the problem was until I had an x-ray and a MRI done. I had tried chiropractic treatments which helped to some degree, but then I saw an Ad in the newspaper about the DRX 9000. After 4 treatments, I noticed changes in my back pain. The treatments are very comfortable and relaxing. Its incredible! What a great alternative to surgery or painkillers.” Maria C.

Excellence in Plastic Surgery with a Caring Touch By: Anya Kishinevsky, M.D.

How can plastic surgery help me feel more confident and look younger for today’s competitive job market? Depending on a person’s individual needs, an eyelid lift, face or neck lift can go a long way towards softening the effects of aging. As the eyes are often described as “the windows to the soul,” removing a bit of excess, drooping skin and the loose fat that makes up the ‘bags”, whether above or below the eyes, often takes years off a man or woman’s appearance. Dark discoloration can be removed as well, all without leaving a visible scar. A face and neck lift is designed to clean up the jowls and excess around the neck, recreating a clean, tight jaw line. The scars are hidden within the hairline, so only your hairdresser will know. The result is a natural, rested appearance, without looking fake or “done.” The results often last for more than ten years without a touch-up. There are also minimally invasive approaches to a younger appearance with Botox, injectable fillers, or laser resurfacing.

How long do the results last? Surgery is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, including a good diet and exercise. The results are technically permanent but may be significantly diminished with major fluctuations in weight. Women who are planning a substantial weight loss or future pregnancies are advised to postpone surgery. Women who smoke should quit all nicotine products for two months before surgery to reduce the risks of surgery.

What if I Would Prefer Fuller or Smaller Breasts? A breast lift can be performed at the same time as a breast reduction or augmentation with an implant with no additional scarring. In the

What are my options for reconstruction if I will be having a mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer? In this day and age, there are so many options for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer to look and feel their best. There is no reason that any woman should be left with a defect or asymmetry. If a woman prefers reconstruction with her own tissues, the fat from the abdomen can be used to make a new breast with a TRAM flap. If a woman prefers a quicker recovery or a larger breast size, reconstruction with a saline or silicone implant may be a good option. A new technique that has been receiving a lot of attention lately is fat transfer for breast reconstruction. Liposuction is performed on the abdomen or thighs and the fat is saved and used to make a new breast or to fill a lumpectomy defect. Fat transfer is simpler and has a quicker recovery time than traditional breast

reconstruction and can be done several times to achieve a larger breast size. Also, if you have been considering breast reduction or breast lift surgery and you will be undergoing lumpectomy; your breast surgeon can work with your plastic surgeon to perform these procedures together. Our office will let you know if your insurance will cover breast reduction surgery.

Infusing Good Health Intravenous Nutrient Therapy (IVNT) and the GABY Cocktail • Vitamin B5 • Vitamin B12 • Vitamin B Complex • Vitamin C • Trace elements • Glutathione can be added for liver detoxification and support

By Stuart Erner, M.D. Intravenous Nutrient therapy (IVNT) is a method of infusing vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants directly into the blood stream. The use of this therapy applies to a broad range of goals, from correcting intracellular nutrient deficiencies, to targeting numerous common health complaints, to optimizing quality of life and personal performance. The rationale for the therapeutic use of intravenous nutrients centers on the clinical benefits of bypassing the digestive system, thereby delivering higher concentrations of important agents directly to cellular receptors. . IVNT was pioneered in the mid 20th century by Baltimore physician John Myers. Dr. Myers developed this therapy for use on a variety of acute maladies. In his time, he treated over a thousand different patients successfully with the nutrient infusion and would schedule “cocktail hours” for patients receiving regular treatments. The “Myers cocktail” was introduced by the Dr. solely as a tool to serve his patients. The treatment was never promoted and Myers did not seek to undertake “uphill battles” with the medical establishment to “get the word out”. In fact, his technique would likely have faded to extinction after he passed away in 1984, were the work not picked and built upon by another Baltimore practitioner, Dr. Alan Gaby. The Gaby cocktail, as it is more contemporarily known, is now used by hundreds of alternative medicine and antiaging physicians across the country to benefit an extensive list of conditions that include: • stress • weakened immune system • sub-optimal detoxification • various infections • inflammatory bowel disease • food sensitivities • fatigue • depression • fibromyalgia • pre-mature aging of the skin Case studies also have shown the GABY cocktail effective in quickening the recovery time from flu, acute Hepatitis A&B and infectious mononucleosis. Likewise, it is used to accelerate the recovery phase in elite athletes in training and during competition.

The GABY cocktail is a specific formulation consisting of: • Calcium Gluconate • Magnesium Chloride

Fairfield County Woman

Iterations of the GABY cocktail are put to use routinely by drug addiction treatment centers such as N.O.R.A Clinic ( a nationwide non-profit organization funded by public and private donations) to improve overall health and decrease withdrawal symptoms in recovering addicts. The broad spectrum benefits of this therapy are linked to several fundamental premises: • maximizing body functions is dependent on optimal nutrient intake; • most individuals are deficient in key nutrients necessary to meet daily contemporary lifestyle demands; • efficient delivery of therapeutic (elevated for remedial applications) levels of nutrients can boost the body’s natural response and resistance to disease and stress The superior utilization of nutrients through intravenous administration can be illustrated with the following perspective. As the oral dose of vitamin C is increased progressively, the serum (blood) concentration of ascorbate tends to approach an upper limit as a result of both saturation of gastrointestinal absorbtion and a sharp increase in renal clearance of the vitamin. Similarly, oral supplementation with other nutrients such as magnesium produces little or no change in serum concentrations. Conversely, direct infusions of the same agents can be shown to double or triple the serum levels.

Stuart Erner, M.D. Dr. Erner is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and a leading specialist in Bariatric, Alternative and Anti-aging Medicine. Dr. Erner has special expertise in the treatment of heart disease, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches using complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities. Additionally, he has helped thousands of patients over his 29 years of practice to lose weight with non-surgical programs that examine the broad spectrum of possible causes for overweight and obesity issues He received an M.D. from Tufts University in 1976. He is an active member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and American Academy of Environmental Medicine. He has served as Vice Chairman of the Obesity Foundation. is a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and has served as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the Albany Medical Center. Dr. Erner has also conducted numerous clinical trials and research for such companies as Lily, Bayer, Forrest Labs and Vitaline on products impacting chronic degenerative disease. ies, is pre-requisite, to establish that the individual is an appropriate candidate for IVNT and how it can best be applied for their particular situation and concerns. Generally a series of treatments is needed to achieve noticeable/clinical improvements However, depending on the specific condition and repletion

You’re never too young (or too old) for a Mommy Makeover

At the same time, all of the agents used in the GABY cocktail are water soluble. Hence, any true excess, not actually utilized by the body is merely excreted. Skin health and appearance can be enhanced with the GABY cocktail by achieving levels of vitamin C in tissue not obtainable with oral, or even intramuscular administration. This higher efficacy directly impacts the stimulation of collagen synthesis. With the further addition of DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) from surface infusion, via the Mesofacial, a total inside/out strategy can be developed. Tightening and firming of the face and neck will become apparent after several treatments. Hence, the patient’s skincare/age-management routine, including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, fillers and Botox can be upgraded to achieve optimal aesthetic and clinical results.

Methodology A typical GABY cocktail “session” utilizes an intravenous “push” (as distinguished from “drip”) of a modest amount (35-50ml) of IV solution as earlier described. The infusion, performed by a physician in a comfortable setting, lasts about 15-20 minutes. Most patients experience no side-effects except for an occasional sensation of warmth. Medical evaluation by a physician, including appropriate lab stud-

required, certain benefits, such as improved energy levels, feeling of well being, improved sleeping are often reported early in treatment. IVNT can be received at intervals of 2-4 weeks, for 4-6 sessions. There is no “limit”, from a standpoint of safety, to the ultimate number of treatments that can be administered.

Jin Shin Jyutsu: Ancient Wisdom for Today In my previous article from the May/ June edition I mentioned the need and necessity for this ancient, dynamic art in today’s world. To be able to help ourselves heal and work through various issues, illnesses, diseases and conditions is a key component to Jin Shin Jyutsu. It is so easy to learn, do and is literally at our finger tips. In this issue I want to share some of the benefits of Jin Shin Jyutsu:

Through Our Bodies Innate Wisdom, We Can Help Heal Ourselves

• Overall to live a better quality of life • Reduces stress • Increases energy • Quiets and calms the mind • Helps to focus and clear the mind, enhancing clarity & productivity • Enhances energy level during chemotherapy • Aides and promotes better sleep • Relieves anxiety and tensions • Releases and helps us to let go of negative emotions: emotional distress • Faster healing time: great to have 3 sessions before & 3 sessions after surgery

• Enhances sports and athletic performance • Reduces depression • Increases & enhances the immune system • Reduces pains & discomforts • Allergies and migraines • Digestive disorders • Skin problems • Respiratory problems • Stroke • Chronic fatigue • Women’s issues For those who are skeptical about complimentary, energy medicine and are more comfortable with conventional, western medicine Jin Shin Jyutsu is an invaluable compliment. For those people who are uncertain and hesitant: why not benefit from the best of both worlds? Some cli-

ents have stated, “You have to feel it to believe it.” It is about the experience. A session lasts an entire hour; children under the age of 7 often require only 30 minutes. A session’s best result occurs on an empty stomach, therefore it is recommended to not eat anything one full hour prior to a session. Many of my client fall asleep. I love sharing and educating people about Jin Shin Jyutsu, so if you want to come in and experience a session, or work on some issue, please call me, Priscilla Jones 203-921-6437. You Always Have a Choice

By: Fern Tausig, CH You always have a choice but until now, you just didn’t know it… Of course you make choices every day like what to wear, what to eat, whom to call, but that’s not what this is about. This is about the way you choose to view the life chal-

lenges that seem to be presented to you on a daily basis. The boss that has no social skills, the report from your doctor that is frightening, that fender bender you had on the way to an important meeting, that pink slip you just received. Sometimes your first choice is to ‘react’ by telling yourself, “I always have the worst luck” or “What else can possibly go wrong in my life?” When you choose that self-talk, you feel awful, defeated and begin to question yourself in many different negative ways. What if you told yourself “I can handle this,” or asked yourself, “What can I learn from this? You have a choice of how to perceive this experience. One way makes you feel awful and one makes you feel challenged and curious. How would you choose to feel? Yes, you can choose how to feel! I

had a client, we will call him John. He was on top of the world feeling very successful, confident, respected and powerful in his job. One day, he describes, “ It was the worst day of my life.” He applied for a promotion at his company and his boss told him “You don’t have what it takes for this new position”. He became very angry and quit his job. For the next several years, he told me, “I became a complete failure. I have not been able to keep a job…I am a failure!” I asked him, “what if your boss was lying? What if he already promised that job to his buddy and just told you that to avoid any further inquiry?” He didn’t know he had a choice. He immediately believed his boss and became what he thought he was…a failure. In hypnosis we call that an ‘imprint’. It is something we imme-

diately believe and it dictates how we live and behave. With hypnosis I was able to remove that belief and change his perception of himself. Hypnosis works because you can reprogram your mind using a variety of methods that create lasting permanent changes. You learn to ‘respond’ to a situation before you ‘react’ with negativity. The main benefits of hypnosis are to reduce stress, increase energy, sleep better and make your dreams come true. How does that work? The next article will answer that question!

Experience The Oral Wellness ... By: Ann E. Hogan, DDS What is Oral Wellness? It is my strong belief that Oral Wellness is an experience which makes life enjoyable and interestingly colorful. It is a feeling which has tenets of oral health, harmony and esthetique appeal. I feel committed to bring this experience to my patients. I would like to share the Esthetique Dentistry philosophy of Oral Wellness in this article and in a series of articles to follow. Being a woman is extraordinary, fun and fulfilling; but let’s be honest, it’s not always easy. We experience life with its intricacies; we take on a multitude of roles throughout the stages of life; and our bodies go through so many in-

evitable changes that can alter the integrity of oral health. Let us discuss some pertinent issues which lay the basis of ‘oral health’ and bring oral wellness. Is there a link between your oral health and your overall health? The Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health states that good oral health is essential to good general health. Research has linked periodontal (gum) disease to a variety of health problems that affect women. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection which can enter the bloodstream through the mouth and may be a factor in causing other health complications. It affects nearly 75 percent of Americans. Healthy Gums and a Healthy Heart: A Connection Cardiovascular disease is the cause of 2,400 deaths a day and is the number one cause of both death and disability in women. Recently there have been major research findings that link gum disease with heart disease. A consensus paper on the relationship between heart disease and gum disease was recently published concurrently by the American Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Periodontology . It emphasizes that, “Inflammation is a major risk factor for heart disease, and periodontal disease may increase the inflammation level throughout the body”. This publication recommends that the dentists not only inform their patients of the increased risk of cardiovascular disease associated with periodontal disease; but to also assess their risk for future cardiovascular disease and guide them to be evaluated for the major risk factors. Physicians managing patients with cardiovascular disease are advised to evaluate the mouth for the basic signs of periodontal disease. A ‘self risk assessment test’ has been designed by The American Academy of Periodontology . This can help you see if you are at risk for having or developing periodontal disease. We strong-

a woman’s perspective

ly recommend that people should carry out this test at http://service.previser.com/aap/ default.aspx. Hormones- a Woman’s Enigma As a woman, you know that your health needs are unique. We go thru puberty and then have our menstrual cycles, and maybe some of us have gone through pregnancy or perhaps menopause. And we all know that our bodies go through all kinds of changes in these times and we need to take extra good care of ourselves. Did you know that your oral health needs also change at these times? During puberty, an increased level of sex hormones, such as progesterone and possibly estrogen, causes increased blood circulation to the gums. This may cause an increase in the gum’s sensitivity and lead to a greater reaction to any irritation. The gums become swollen, turn red and feel tender. Occasionally, some women experience menstruation gingivitis - bleeding, bright red and swollen gums and sores on the inside of the cheek. A similar scenario is progressively noticed with advancement of pregnancy. In some cases, gums swollen by pregnancy gingivitis can form large lumps called pregnancy tumors. Periodontal disease is often a “silent” disease; many women do not realize they have it until it reaches an advanced state. The 1999 issue of the Journal of Periodontology reports that at least 23 percent of women ages 30 to 54 have periodontal disease. And 44 percent of women ages 55 to 90 who still have their teeth have periodontal disease. Oral Health and Pre-Term, Low Birth – Weight babies Any infection, including periodontal infection, is cause for concern during pregnancy. In fact, there are studies to support that pregnant women who have periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a baby that is born too early and too small! If you are planning to become pregnant, it is necessary to include a periodontal evaluation as part of your prenatal care. Women who use oral contraceptives may be susceptible to the same oral health conditions that affect pregnant women.

Oral Health and Menopause Women who are menopausal or post-menopausal may experience changes in their mouths. They may notice discomfort in the mouth, including dry mouth, pain and burning sensations in the gum tissue and altered taste, especially salty, peppery or sour. Bone loss is associated with both periodontal disease and osteoporosis. Women considering Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to help fight osteoporosis should note that this may help protect their teeth as well as other parts of the body. Another Journal of Periodontology study published in August 1999 and a more recent one in 2007, conclude that estrogen supplementation in women within five years of menopause slows the progression of periodontal disease. Estrogen supplementation may lower gingival inflammation and the rate of attachment loss (destruction of the fibers and bone that support the teeth) in women with signs of osteoporosis, thus helping to protect the teeth. Oral Health and Diabetes Diabetes affects approximately 285 million people worldwide, and this number is only expected to increase. Studies have suggested there is a two-way relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease. Samuel Low, DDS, MS, President of the American Academy of Periodontology says “Periodontal disease triggers the body’s inflammatory response which can affect insulin sensitivity and ultimately lead to unhealthy blood sugar levels. Establishing routine periodontal care is one way to help keep diabetes under control.” What do we do at Esthetique Dentistry to assist our patients in maintaining oral health? At our office we lay a strong emphasis on our patient’s periodontal health. A detailed examination with radiographs, periodontal probing and charting is carried out for all of our patients to have a baseline for continuous monitoring of oral disease process or gum health status. Once we have diagnosed a problem, we contact your physician to discuss the underlying issues and develop a treatment plan to protect your overall physical health. We encourage our patients to keep a close watch on their blood profiles, blood pressure and be active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

At Esthetique Dentistry we practice the old fashioned art of caring for our patients in a state of the art environment … Ann E. Hogan, DDS

Health & Wellness What treatment options are there to treat the gum (periodontal) disease? Regular Cleaning Prevention is better than cure. Prevention is achieved by good home-care, getting regular physical and dental check-ups, and following through with indicated managements. Your bone and gum tissue should fit snugly around your teeth like a turtleneck around your neck. When you have periodontal disease, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, forming “pockets” around the teeth. Over time, these pockets become deeper, providing a larger space for bacteria to live. As bacteria develop around the teeth, they can accumulate and advance under the gum tissue. These deep pockets collect even more bacteria, resulting in further bone and tissue loss. Eventually, if too much bone is lost, the teeth will need to be extracted. Deep cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing) Periodontal health is often accomplished through non-surgical periodontal treatment, where we perform scaling and root planning (deep cleaning) which is a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and tartar from deep periodontal pockets that have developed, and to smooth the tooth root surface to remove bacterial toxins. Localized delivery of Antibiotics for gum disease The deep cleaning is many times followed by placement of localized delivery of antibiotic agents ATRIDOX or ARESTIN. These are placed gently below the gum line into periodontal pockets where bacteria thrive. These antibiotics locally help to fight the bacteria that are causing gum disease and help your gum tissue to reattach to your teeth. All patients will need ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain periodontal health for at least 3 – 6 months. Gum surgery / Periodontal surgery However, non-surgical therapy does have its limitations. When it does not achieve periodontal health, surgery may be indicated to restore periodontal anatomy damaged by periodontal diseases and to facilitate oral hygiene practices. If the pocketing depths around your teeth are so deep that the non-surgical approach isn’t completely effective, surgery including any combination of osseous surgery, bone grafting, pocket elimination, soft tissue grafting or flap surgery would be indicated. We perform most of such surgeries at our office. Oral Health and the Role of Orthodontics / Invisalign After the active periodontal disease is at bay, in some instances it may be indicated that we align the teeth using Invisalign or comprehensive orthodontics. Teeth that are overly crowded or teeth that are widely spaced can both contribute to periodontal disease. Orthodontic therapy is often suggested to lead to an improved periodontal status by increasing ease of plaque removal and reduced occlusal trauma due to an unfavorable bite. Though more and

more adults are undertaking orthodontic alignment of the teeth for a better esthetic result, many of them don’t realize that they are also increasing the longevity of their dentition by improving their periodontal conditions at the same time. What should I expect from my consultation at Esthetique Dentistry? When you make an appointment at Esthetique Dentistry, you will be greeted by a friendly, compassionate staff. You wait time will be short, in a pleasant, supportive environment. We believe that the first consultation appointment is the basis of achieving and maintaining oral health. At this appointment, once you have been acquainted with our office and with our team, we will first take a thorough medical history. We will take a complete series of radiographs, as well as photographs of your face and the mouth. Once these diagnostics are completed, a detailed head, neck and oral examination are carried out. These are all used to design a plan to achieve your optimized oral health We will take however much time is needed to explain in detail our findings, and will be very happy to answer all of your questions. If after your thorough exam it is determined that you have conditions that need addressing, we will make further appointments to carry out the steps to lead you to experience the Oral Wellness which we believe makes life more enjoyable. We are a team of dedicated and competent general dentists and dental specialists devoted to empowering you on a journey to oral and dental wellness and overall health. Home Health for Elderly Family Caregiving - Helping a Parent Age in Place with Non-Medical In-Home Care giver, usually a middle-aged daughter who is also working, spends an average of 20 hours per week caring for an elderly parent. Forty percent of the caregivers who work full time report missing work on a regular basis due to the health needs of an elderly family member. Over half of the primary caregivers state they were unprepared for schedule juggling. Forty-two percent were unprepared for balancing work and care giving responsibilities.

Article 1 of 3 in a series

By Marie Diaz Enabling an elderly parent to age at home in accordance with their wishes is a responsibility one wants to fulfill with virtuosity. The co-management of a parent’s life often becomes a daunting task when coupled with the competing demands of career, other family members, friends, and need for personal time. While not the total answer, engaging an in-home non-medical care provider, such as Senior Helpers, can be of significant value in maintaining balance between being the primary family caregiver and the other aspects of your life. Your delivery of transportation, personal, and chore related services through an entity that becomes a trusted provider, can be crucial to promoting the quality of the familial relationship you want with your parent. In-home care can provide a means for your parent to have ongoing control of her/ his own schedule, dignity in having personal needs addressed, and additional socialization opportunities.

Most of Us Will Face the Challenge

Caring for an elderly family member is a reality most of us will face. As of April 2009, six out of ten U.S. families have a relative or friend needing long term care. That year there were 36 million seniors living in the U.S. with the senior population expected to double. “Aging in Place in America,” a commissioned survey conducted by independent research company Prince Market Research, indicated that seniors fear moving into a nursing home and losing their independence more than they fear death. An overwhelming majority, 89%, wants to age without having to move from their homes, and yet more than half are concerned about their ability to do so.

Understand and Be Prepared for the Scope of the Responsibility

One estimate is that the primary family care-

Additional responsibilities include managing medical appointments, transportation to and from these visits, home modification for safety and/or optimal use, home maintenance, housekeeping, and shopping. Perhaps the individual will need assistance with dressing, bathing, grooming and/or other personal care needs. Also, keep in mind your parent’s desire to remain as socially engaged as possible for the enjoyment of life? The tasks of researching, planning, and executing parental care may at times seem overwhelming. To avoid or reduce the impact to your career, own family and the emotional strain reported by 80% of working caregivers know what you are facing and how to thrive will managing it. Understand how you will achieve time for yourself and have a personal plan for stress relief. There are a plethora of resources. Geriatric care managers, social workers, financial planners, elder law attorneys, aging-in-place interior designers/home remodelers, benefits advocates, senior centers, the Agency on Aging, family caregiver support groups, home nurses, non-medical in-home care providers, and others all exist for you to use in planning, managing, and delivering parental support. Engaged effectively, they can reduce the strain, help you remain productive, and enjoy your relationship with your parent. One would be well served to understand the roles and capabilities of the agencies and service providers. Know the ones to use in care planning and have preselected ones to provide care if/when the need arises.

Should the time come for in-home care for your parent, a non-medical in-home care provider may be able to play a pivotal role.

How In-home Non-Medical Care Can Be of Benefit

It may be that you need to have the time to focus on the brain intensive needs of your parent(s) such as the legal, medical, and financial aspects. Or, your work does not enable you to accompany your parent to all appointments with doctors, shopping trips, or barber/ stylist appointments. Sometimes they may want to sit in the park, go for a walk, see a movie, be accompanied to the local senior center yet, your schedule makes this difficult. Perhaps there are events such as weddings, birthday parties, and graduations which they would like to attend and you know they will have to leave early. Someone needs to get them home and settled. It might be that you normally have everything covered. However, there is upcoming work related travel or a vacation when your parent will not be with you. Who can provide the necessary support to enable you to focus on the business activity or enjoy a much needed respite? Has full-time undertaking of laundry, meal planning, meal preparation, housekeeping, and errands become exhaustive for your parent and too time consuming for you? Then periodic or daily assistance for these chores might be the answer.

Testimonials I am writing [to say] how pleased I am with the services of Marie Diaz [Director of Operations] of Senior Helpers. She is perfectly matched to her position. Marie is kind, caring and goes above and beyond the scope of her job, a quality very rare indeed in today’s world! Barbara L. I can’t thank Marie enough for the great support provided. Marie is exceptional. She handled several scrambles with seeming ease, but I’m sure they were challenging. She supported us so very, very well. All the staff, Dawn, Kadena, Rosa, and Loida, were all great. They all took care of Dad as if he was their own. Their updates to my brother, my sister and myself were all very much appreciated. They did a great job to make sure that Dad was comfortable and provided good advice for us. If you would like, I am more than happy to be a reference for your firm going forward. Joan H.

It could be the family member is at the point where some level of incontinence care, bathing, and/or dressing assistance is needed which is uncomfortable for them, and you, to be done by a family member. Providing services to address these needs are just some of the ways that a non-medical in-home care provider can collaborate with you in care. Find the provider, or providers, with the dexterity to complement your needs and approach to maintaining your life balance and desired type of parental relationship. A provider can be of significant value in keeping your parent at home safely and engaging in life. Next in the Series: Considerations in Selecting the Right Type of In-Home Care Provider and the Specific Professional Caregiver.

IMAGINE THE SAME CONTRACTOR FOR LIFE Your home is your largest investment – and the place where you live. Ideally it should be a welcoming and peaceful environment for you and your family. An experienced contractor can help you achieve that ambiance. Important points to consider when hiring a contractor: • You must be able to work with him. He must be communicative, responsive and flexible. These are all important attributes in someone you will be working with closely, for weeks, or months. • Timeliness at the interview, solid references, returning calls promptly and neatness in person and on the job, all illustrate a high level of professionalism. • His portfolio will give you an insight into the types of projects he does well and his ability to adapt to his clients’ and the designers’ style. • Research him on Google to see if any complaints pop up. • Confirm that he has a license, credentials and insurance. At FJC Designs & Construction, LLC we work with clients as partners to provide superior results within budget. We deliver on all the points above.

It’s All in the Details! Topside Detailing, LLC – an up and coming Stamford-based mobile detailing outfit - is front page news in major publications like the Hartford Courant, Stamford Advocate and Fairfield County Business Journal thanks to the enthusiastic, savvy leadership of its two young owners, Jonathan Piazza-Harper and Parth Thaker. The company’s strength is in their mobility. Topside’s unique mobile detailing units and conveniently located express detailing shops offer automotive and marine vessel packages for everyone – from the busy business professional to active caretaker. Topside has also made a name for themselves with their highly trained staff and exclusive use of environmentally friendly products, cleaning and disposal methods.

What is ‘mobile’ detailing?

It means that we can detail any vehicle or vessel on-site from the convenience of your home, office, marina or commuter parking lot.

How often should I have my car detailed?

We recommend that a vehicle be properly and thoroughly cleaned with a complete detail every 4-6 months. Your car should also receive a waxing every 1-2 months. All vehicles should be hand washed approximately 2-3 times a month if possible.

How long does a detailing take?

It depends on the services involved. An express detail takes just 45 minutes while a complete detailing takes about three hours.

Do you offer multi-car discounts?

Yes, we offer discounts for 3 or more vehicles as well as bi-monthly, monthly and quarterly maintenance packages.

Is there a fixed price?

We charge a ‘soft’ price unless there is excessive wear and tear on a vehicle that requires additional attention. Topside will inform you of any additional service recommendations before they are rendered.

Why do you have a DEP permit?

Our DEP permit allows Topside to properly handle, collect and dispose of vehicle maintenance wastewater (Permit # GVM001161.)

How are you environmentally safe?

Our waterless car wash allows us to detail any vehicle using less than a cup of water! This saves over 100 gallons of water per wash and leaves no mess behind! We use 100% environmentally friendly cleaning products as well as a state-of-the-art wastewater reclaim system.

What areas do you cover?

Our auto services cover the state of Connecticut as well as Westchester County, NY. Our mobile marine detailing units service the coasts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island.

LinkedIn for Business – Part 2 of 3

By: Carol McManus If the article in the last issue peaked your curiosity, then you are probably well on your way to making LinkedIn a powerful weapon in your social media arsenal. In this issue we will delve into more detail about what you can do to start attracting more business today. PROFILE: It all starts with an effective and complete profile. An incomplete profile says as much about you as not having one at all and in either case, the message you are sending is not a good one. LinkedIn provides you an opportunity to present your personal biography in a positive, professional, and engaging way. It allows you to show the world everything you want people to know about you – your background, your capabilities, and your services. The first challenge clients usually bring up is, “I can do all that on my website, and there I don’t have to compete with everyone else’s message.” And my answer is, “That is absolutely true – but – you have to first attract people to your site and then get them to stay long enough to seek out the information about you.” This takes time, talent and money, and there are no guarantees it will work. When people visit LinkedIn, however, it is with the purpose of finding people, finding out about them, and then taking appropriate action (which may be to follow the link to your website where your services are fully displayed). Think of your LinkedIn profile as your permanent classified ad about you! PHOTO: Why is a quality headshot your best shot? It’s simple really. For people who know you (or have known you in the past), it’s reassurance and confirmation that they are connecting with the right person. For people who don’t know you, it puts a face to a name and goes a long way in humanizing you.

A quality headshot requires you to be wellgroomed, looking into the camera so people can see your eyes, and above all – smiling! This postage stamp digital image is your best way to say to the world, “I’m real, I’m human, and I’m approachable.” Dress can vary depending on what you do for a living but should reflect how you want people to perceive you as a professional and what they can anticipate if and when they meet you in person. For example, if you are competing for corporate business, then a suit is appropriate. This would also be true for lawyers, CPA’s, insurance representatives, financial advisors, etc. If you’re a doctor, a dentist, or a chiropractor, then a lab coat could work very effectively. If you’re in a business where casual dress is the norm, then men might choose an open neck shirt or polo while ladies might select a blouse or sweater. While you certainly want to look your best, this is not the time for Glamour Shots as they tend to lean toward provocative rather than professional. A little bonus tip about photos: you should seriously consider using the same primary head shot on all your social networking profiles – Facebook, Twitter, Plaxo, Squidoo, etc. Why? So that when people navigate from one site to another looking for people, you will stand out as familiar and recognizable. That visual reinforcement will encourage connecting, friending, and following. (More on this in the 3rd series article). NETWORK: Set a goal of 250 connections. For some this may seem daunting at first, but you will be surprised at how quickly you will get there. With a systematic approach of sending 5 invitations every day, you can reach you goal in a couple of months. You will go through stages of identifying and connecting with people on LinkedIn. For most of my clients it becomes a stream of consciousness… one person leads to another who reminds you of someone else and when you connect with them another person will pop up. Start with your current database – it might be your Outlook or Yahoo or AOL email list but it is the best place to begin. Search by name to see who is already on LinkedIn and send them an invitation to connect. After you have exhausted this list, begin searching the companies you have worked for in the past as well as educational institutions you have attended. I guarantee you will find names of people you haven’t seen or talked to in years, but would

enjoy reconnecting with you on LinkedIn. The third area to search is the connections of the people who you are now connected to. Take a few minutes every day and pick 1 or 2 people in your new virtual universe and see who their connections are. Chances are there will be a name you recognize and someone else to invite into your network. GROUPS: The real secret to LinkedIn success lies in the Groups. You have the opportunity to join up to 50 groups (it took me 18 months to reach the maximum). The categories are: Alumni (look for all the schools you attended – whether you graduated or not); Corporate (join the groups of companies you have worked for or perhaps had business associations with in the past); Conference (many conferences today create their own groups to facilitate networking before and after the event); Networking (great for just common interests – mine is Starbucks Enthusiasts!); NonProfit (great way to connect with other volunteers, fund-raisers, leaders, and members of non-profit organizations); Professional (more general groups to appeal to your profession – lawyers, doctors, CPA’s, etc.); and finally, if all else fails, there is a category for Other (covers any group that doesn’t fit into one of the other categories). There are thousands of groups on LinkedIn and many have thousands of members. Once you are approved for membership in a group (sometimes automatic and sometimes requires approval by group manager), you can begin to dialogue with other members through the Discussion Forums. Be careful not to sell – be a valuable contributor. More on this in the 3rd article for FCW coming in September. ACCESS: Opening your Profile for everyone to see is the easiest thing to do and the very thing that most people do wrong! Once you have your profile ready to go, open the settings and set it to Full View. Remember, this is your online classified ad about you. What is the point if you don’t let people know about you? I am continually baffled by people who limit access to their profile. It makes total sense on a site like Facebook where you are sharing personal photos and information. But LinkedIn is your professional persona and there is no reason to hide the information. Recruiters, hiring managers, potential clients, or new business associates will look to Linke-

dIn to check you out. If they can’t see the information you are slowing down the potential for new business. If you develop your profile the way you want yourself to be known, there is absolutely no reason to make your profile private. Well that’s a lot of information for today, but hopefully it has been helpful. If you haven’t done so already, please send me an invitation to connect today. www.linkedin.com/in/carolmcmanus In the September issue, we will discuss specific strategies to drive new business to your door without selling anything and in only 7 minutes a day!

Testimonials: “Thank you for your coaching today. I never really thought that LinkedIn was that important but now I see how it can really connect you with people, groups, etc. I also see the benefit of using my business email rather than personal. Thank you for that, too.” J. Cicalese – Fairfield County, CT “I met Carol through LinkedIn and was very impressed with her professionalism, insightfulness and her passion in making a difference in other people’s lives. I have the pleasure to partner with her on a new venture and she has made huge strides in a short period of time due to her ability to identify top talent and help others reach their full potential using her natural coaching abilities.” A. Borgardt – Oshkosh, WI “Companies that work with Carol are in for a treat. She is a commensurate professional who can combine both strategic and tactical thinking into action that creates dynamic outcomes for companies.” M. Ferrara – Boston, MA “Carol delivers an enthusiastic, positive nature to her professional consulting endeavors. Whether she is coaching her clients through challenging management situations or guiding them through operational efficiencies, Carol’s leadership and enthusiasm is contagious and drives results for any organization, large or small.” R. Business to Business What is image consulting? By Dianne Boras It’s not about looking like you just stepped off the red carpet. It’s about you looking comfortable and confident in the clothes that you wear. It’s about walking into the mall, knowing at first glance if an item might be right for you. It’s about walking out of the mall, with a shopping bag full of clothes that look great on you, and that you will actually wear! It is the end of having clothes in your closet for years, with the tags still on them! Why is this important? Because your image defines who you are. Your appearance tells a story about you. When your clothes look and fit great, you give an impression of confidence and success. We can assist you in defining your personal style and teach you how to dress to achieve the look that you desire. Very simple, when you look great, you feel great! Who hires image consultants? Our client base consists of both professional women and stay at home moms. Professional business women enjoy the help in selecting the right business wardrobe to make them feel professional, yet feminine. Many stay at home moms are looking to turn their casual attire into stylish casual attire.

Summer Vacation Planning means of travel. How do you want to reach your destination? How much time will you spend traveling? What is your budget? Do you want to go international, or stay close to home? What compromises are you willing to make? Answering these questions and creating a plan will help you organize the right vacation for you.

By: Steven Brillon Personal Organizational Prefessional Summer has arrived and it’s time to plan a vacation. Before the fun begins there is much to be managed to ensure a successful summer retreat. We have to consider the cost, dates, political and social climate, weather, accommodations and

32 JULY/AUGUST

Some of the most popular travel sites that will help you navigate your way to a great deal include: www.travelocity.com, www.orbitz. com and www.priceline.com (one of my personal favorites). All of these websites allow you to search through individually priced airfares, accommodations and car rentals or you can have the option of searching through packages deals. (Note:

If you book your flight directly with an airline carrier you might want to buy two one-way tickets, which can prove to be a cost saver). Priceline offers a service called “name your own price” for airfares, accommodations and car rentals. You just might be able to score that $700 ticket for about $500 or less. Just be reasonable in your request and if it is accepted you will immediately be charged the cost of the purchase with no cancellations or refunds. Prepping your home while away is another very important step. If you have furry, feathered, scaled or green children you’ll need to find a responsible candidate to appropriately and carefully care for your precious friends in your absence. Find someone who is pet or plant

friendly, reminding them that some pets and plants are more finicky than others. Also make sure they are well equipped to do what is needed. Finally, know your travel restrictions, requirements and costs of checked baggage, which varies with each carrier. Make a travel list of things you intend to bring. Arrange your packing list by category: electronics, toiletries, clothing and shoes, identifications, credit cards, etc. Check these items off as you prepare your luggage and be prepared to revise your list and leave things behind. Once you have completed your lists, the only thing left to do is to count the days, hours and minutes until your fun begins. I’ll see you on the beach.

Spirit of WomanConnect™ ~ Harnessing the Power of Connection Networking for business is an essential part of business strategy. Not only does it provide an opportunity to market and promote one’s business, it can be a very fertile field to establish meaningful connections that can result in gaining a word of mouth recommendation, known as a referral. However, not all networking experiences are created equal, nor are they formed for the same purpose. Some are nothing more than opportunities to collect contact data and very often a connection is never made. Valerie Fields understands that it is the element of CONNECTION that makes the difference between a networking event and a fruitful networking experience. That is why she made “establishing connections” the foundation and focus of Spirit of WomanConnect™. To be given a referral is an act of trust; where the giver trusts the person they are giving the referral to because they have first CONNECTED with the person and a relationship was established based on the connection. By nature women are relational and intuitive beings, with instinctive, supportive and connective powers - making them a natural for networking. Imagine a networking experience where these uniquely feminine energies are always in operation. It is doubtless that the whole dynamic of networking amongst women would change; receiving a much needed makeover from the pretentious introductions, phony pleasantries and cold collection of contact data that too often characterize traditional networking events. It is precisely those characterizations that Spirit of WomanConnect™ seeks to change in the launch of a new networking experience designed to serve the interests of women. Spirit of WomanConnect™ is an inclusive and dynamic monthly networking experience that harnesses the connective and relational power of women. The meetings facilitate an inspiring environment that increases opportunities to establish meaningful connections ~ providing fertile ground where women can be a part of a vital system of support. Spirit of WomanConnect™ was created in 2010 by Valerie J. Fields, founder of Spirit of Woman Unlimited and creator of signature empowerment events for women since 2005. It serves the interests of women providing business-to- business and woman-to-woman networking for women

Fairfield County Woman

business owners, women entrepreneurs and women who want to discover their passion and explore their entrepreneurial interests.

Monthly Access Networking Experiences - The “M.A.N.E. Event Spirit of WomanConnect™ Monthly Access Networking Experiences are known as (the “M.A.N.E. ™” event). Hosted at a

local venue in downtown Stamford, unlike other networking groups, there are no membership requirements; the meetings operate on a “pay-as-you-go” system and are limited to 30 participants. The meetings are informal and intimate - increasing the probability that meaningful connections are made. Attendees must reserve space and pre-pay for their attendance at each meeting. Cost to attend each meeting is $25.00 which also includes lunch.

What Can Participants Expect Women who attend the M.A.N.E. ™ event can expect to be acknowledged, appreciated and recognized for what they uniquely have to offer to others; opportunities are provided to promote their businesses or passions; there is access to resources, information and other powerful women who have specialized knowledge and a particular expertise. It’s an engaging experience where everyone comes in on equal footing. No exclusive circles.

What’s in it for those who attend? Testimonial “Valerie Fields is a powerful force and inspiration to all women. Her conferences and workshops offers to women healing, restoration and inspiration to become a better woman. I am grateful for her work and her ability to connect women with themselves and to each other.”

What each participant gets out of the networking experience usually mirrors what they come to contribute. When each woman activates her connective power, she can expect amazing results. There are opportunities to expand personal networks; increase circles of influence and establish vital and meaningful connections. It’s an environment that makes it easy to get referrals because the atmosphere inspires connection which often leads to relationship.

De Boone CEO De Boone Consulting

Benefits of Participation Each month there is a business card drawing giving each business owner the opportunity to be the monthly business in the spotlight; participants get a free listing in the resource directory on spiritofwomanconnect.org, and a chance to network, be coached and inspired by women regarded as experts in their field.

The Value of Connection is Incalculable

For more info, visit www.spiritofwomanconnect.org or feel free to contact me directly at 203.912.2756

Every M.A.N.E. ™ event is treated like an oyster; you never know which one will contain the pearl. Spirit of WomanConnect values connections because you never know in what way the impact of that connection will have in changing the course of someone else’ life. This has been the impetus that has fueled Valerie’s passion to create a “different” kind of networking experience that really makes establishing connections possible. As a result of her events, Valerie says many women have received courage to push into their passion and give life to a deferred dream because they attended an event and connected with another woman who inspired them to do so.

Daniel R. Kaufman, CPA By: Daniel R. Kaufman, CPA Managing Member of Daniel R. Kaufman, CPA, LLC

we have at the beginning of the year? How did we utilize those resources? What do have left?

The main difference between a small family owned business and its regional, national, and international competitors is not only the size of the companies, the expertise of management or the drive of the owners, but the breadth and depth of the information available in the decision making process. In this modern economy, a one-person “shop” can work globally. There are no more boundaries.

The purpose of an accounting system is not just the collection, collation, and regurgitation of data in order to prepare a tax return or financial statement. These are compliance issues and have very little value. The true purpose of an accounting system is to provide the information needed in order to make intelligent decisions regarding the resources and assets of a business.

The accounting department is the main provider of information to the business owner. The main drawback is that the information provided is historical in nature. What resources did I, and my firm, provide a wide array of services to a diverse client base, including real estate professionals, attorney’s, doctors and dentists, chiropractors, insurance agencies, and contractors.

Computerized Accounting Systems I am fully expert in QuickBooks™ and Peachtree™ Accounting Software and can help you install, set-up and configure your new computerized bookkeeping system. In fact, in 2007 I became a Certified QuickBooks Pro-Advisor Once we install your system. My firm can help you customize it to meet your specific needs and resolve any issues that arise in your day-to-day use of the system.

Bookkeeping Services From periodic “write-up” services or “real-time” check writing and bookkeeping, I can take the worry out of running the accounting function or your small business. Today’s entrepreneur may not have the time or expertise to keep up with the minutiae of bookkeeping. Bank reconciliations, loans, credit cards, fixed assets, and depreciation

schedules, you could spend a significant portion of your time making sure that the information you need to make financial decisions is in good order. When are you going to have time to do what you are good at, the reason you opened your business was not to be a bookkeeper.

Income taxes Individual, business, estate, and gift tax, I have over a decade of experience helping people and small business meet tax compliance obligations. However, taxes are not limited to April 15th. The real goal; is not just filing your taxes, but also making sure that you only pay your fair share. Planning is a year-round pursuit, and if it is done well, you can sleep easy on April 14th knowing that you only paid what you were supposed to, and not one penny more.

Financial Statements There are many reasons to have financial statements prepared. You may need a loan from a bank, your vendors may require a financial statement to extend credit, or you may just want a periodic snap shot of how your business is doing. I can prepare financial statements for

There are two main categories of data sets. We are familiar with financial metrics and the information provided by them. Operating expenses, cost of goods sold, current assets, long-term liabilities. These measures only tell half internal, management use only, or can provide a compilation, review, or audit, if those types of statements are called for as well

Financial Analysis Financial statements are a useful tool for running your business, a financial statement provides information that is critical in the decision making process, however financial statements of all types have severe limitations, the only see the past. In order to see where your business is going, how it compares with its peer group, how effectively the business coverts sales into profits, consider a more in-depth analysis using both financial and non-financial metrics.

Business Valuation Are you buying or selling a business? Are you taking on a new partner, or working with a financial planner to make sure your family’s needs are covered with life insurance? Consider the fact that your small business is an asset that may have a substantial value. However, in most instances you cannot go to the Wall Street Journal and look up the stock price. How will you know if you

the story. The other data set needed to make intelligent decisions regarding your business are non-financial and change depending on your specific industry. A retail store might want to track overhead or sales by square foot. A professional services firm may need to know net income per billable hour. A restaurant should probably concern itself with revenue per seat or table. When we combine financial and non-financial data, we can begin to plan and take a proactive approach to solving problems before they arise. Until this point, your accounting system is only telling you what happened yesterday. It is not helping you dictate what will happen tomorrow.

are overpaying for the business you are buying, or if you have enough life insurance to cover your assets when you pass away? Consider having Daniel R. Kaufman, CPA prepare a business valuation so you know how much your business is worth.

A little bit about Eagle Point Financial LLC ing for our credit card processing services, while providing superior customer service. Our hope is that this article will provide you with a little more knowledge and information then you currently have on the subject. Knowledge is power and what you do with it is up to you.

What are you paying for your Credit Card Processing?

Jo knows merchant processing is a matter of dollars and sense. Hunter Lipton started Eagle Point Financial, a credit card processing company back in August 2008; by chance, Hunter had lunch with a good friend, in a similar business, who I had just met with to discuss some potential opportunities. Although Hunter had already started Eagle Point, it never occurred to this mutual acquaintance to put us together until that day and the rest is history. Hunter knows the world and I know credit card processing. It was a partnership made in credit card processing heaven. Josephine was a stay-at-home Mom opening and managing several small business ventures; including home decorating and improvement and another one designing and selling terrariums, all honing her entrepreneurial skills. Jo re-entered the work force in 1985, beginning her career in financial operation at a Gulf & Western subsidiary, after which she worked for Showtime Networks, as Director of Financial Operations, and then at First Data Merchant Services as Director of Credit Accounting managing 30 employees and a portfolio of $800MM. Jo splits her time between New York City and Long Island. We have been in business for almost two years, growing while we continue to pursue our goal and promise to our clients which is to offer fair and transparent pric-

Do you really know what you are paying for your credit card processing services? While this is an important and essential service to bring in, maintain and keep your customer base growing, like all services, it is essential that you know what your cost is. Over my fourteen years in the industry I continue to hear this as a pet peeve, and a bone of contention and concern from many Merchants. Unlike other services and hard items that a merchant might consider a “cost of doing business expense” such as linens in a restaurant, fixtures and shelves to a retail merchant to display their goods, or phone and internet services, credit card processing is generally viewed as a necessary evil, even though for most businesses in today’s marketplace credit and debit card sales make up nearly 70% of their overall sales. I am confident that after you read our article you will no longer feel this way. Our hope is that we will provide you with the information you need to have a better understanding and be more comfortable with the ins and outs of credit card processing and pricing. Our goal has always been to educate our Merchants. We believe that education and knowledge allows our customers to see the value in our service.

Your Credit Card Processing Statement

Even with my extensive experience in the industry, it never ceases to amaze me how creative some of the credit card processing companies can be with their monthly statements. This is not to say that they are charging unfairly or at an exorbitant rate, only that the credit card statement is often indecipherable even to a trained eye like mine. At the heart of the issue is that this industry is not currently regulated and a Processor can charge the merchant whatever the market will bear. Often time the credit card pricing offered to the merchant is a

result of the geographic and economic climate of the merchant’s location (inner city, rural, high end) as well as, the existence and level of competition or options for the merchant to choose from. In addition to the multitude of pricing types, Tiered, Bundled, Enhanced Bill Back and Interchange Plus, confusion can reign when it is not clearly displayed on the monthly processing statement, or not outright explained to the merchant. For example, Tiered pricing is generally at three different pricing levels with a low Tier 1 or qualified rate, with much higher pricing for Tier 2 and Tier 3 sales. Needless to say the majority of the sales will fall into the higher tiered categories, thereby costing the Merchant more for this service. Bundled pricing pretty much speaks for itself, in that all the fees are bundled into a few categories, and are not clearly stated, making it impossible to understand true cost. I would like to explain to you how Eagle Point treats our customers and tell you a little bit about the competitive and transparent pricing structure we offer. What does that mean to our Merchant? Unlike some of our competitors, our monthly merchant processing statement is clear and concise with transparent pricing. I’m sure you are wondering, what transparent pricing is, and how it differs from Tiered or Bundled. First, there are no hidden or unexplained fees making our pricing structure transparent to our customers, this is also referred to as pass through pricing. With transparent pricing we pass through the hard cost of fees that Eagle Point pays to Visa, Mastercard and Discover. In addition to the hard cost we pass through to our merchant, Eagle Points charges a marginal mark up. In these current economic times, where business owners are watching every dollar, we need to make sure that we understand exactly what we are paying to our essential vendors to control costs and overhead. Eagle Point’s assurance to our customers is that without fail you will know exactly what your costs are for our service. Eagle Point consistently shows our clients a savings of between forty and fifty percent over cost after we perform an analysis on their current credit card processing statement. The analysis is free and we are so confident in our pricing that if we cannot meet or beat your current price, we will give you a $500.00 Visa/MC debit card.

Eagle Point has a vast array of merchants using our services around the country, with our highest concentration of clients in New York City and the Connecticut area. Our client base extends from a 100 location parking garage in New York City to many luxury brand retailers, as well as, famous and well known restaurants nationwide. Of course my personal favorite is the fabulous beauty salons we have in our client base. As a lady with a few years behind her, (and for you folks that are not in this category it’s when they start to call you wise or learned, or worse someone calls you Ma’am) it is always a wonderful experience to go to the Valery Joseph Salon on Madison Avenue and get a great hair cut and color experience. Revi Roman the owner of Valery Joseph has three other salons in the City, which I like to frequent as often as possible, and one in Bridgehampton for the summer months. Our Sales Manager, Brian Feeley, has cultivated and grown his relationship with many merchants in Fairfield County and neighboring Connecticut areas. When we speak to his customers it is clear they love Brian’s home town style and how he supports their needs in a very personal way. They also know that he has the might and support of a large corporation behind the scenes to assist him and his customers whenever needed. Eagle Point is growing our business one merchant at a time by building relationships with our local venders and long distance through our network of Sales Representatives. Eagle Point believes in supporting the growth of our merchant’s businesses by dining at their restaurants, parking in their garages and enjoying their salons. We pride ourselves on superior customer service and added value products, to support most any need our client may have, thereby giving them the ability to grow and support their clients’ needs. In the next issue I would like to talk about our “added value products and services” and how they can help you to grow your business and client base. After reading our article if you should have any questions regarding your credit card processing, or would like us to perform a free financial analysis, please do not hesitate to call us. We can be reached at 212207-3427, my extension is 116.

THE NOTICE FOR JURY DUTY HAS ARRIVED‌NOW WHAT? Presented by Adele R. Jacobs, Esq. Being a juror is to serve an important role in our democracy. The jury system furthers the freedoms and liberties we enjoy, and are blessed to have. Having a trial by “a jury of our peersâ€?, is firmly established by the State Constitution, and as a juror you uphold our liberty and freedom by serving as a decision maker in a legal dispute. There are so many places in the world where people do not have the right to trial by jury, or maybe even a trial in the first instance, so it should be with much gratitude that we approach our jury duty, with a true belief that we are doing our civic duty, and upholding democracy that it is our great privilege to enjoy.

be open and honest, as jury duty is not an opportunity to change the law—that is for the legislature. So if you feel the slightest hesitation about your ability to be fair to ALL parties to the litigation, it is imperative that you voice those feelings during jury selection. Admittedly, it is not the most comfortable situation for some people, but it is the only opportunity for all parties to find the most fair and impartial jury to decide their dispute.

While we all consider ourselves to be “fair people, our individual fairness barometer has understandably been colored or influenced by our life experiences. You may not be able to be fair and impartial in a particular case, or a particular issue, but that does not make you a “bad When you come into court for the person, and, in fact, the parties and first day of jury duty, you will be the attorneys will greatly appreciate seated in a room with many other your honesty. all of the evidence, and ultimately come to a resolution. The hope is that jurors realize the significance of their position. Without juries, the democracy that we now enjoy would be greatly compromised. A juror provides a valuable service to the community, and their country. The goal is to have a juror present himself or herself to court, ready to serve with an open mind, and decide a case in a fair, just, and reasonable manner. Jurors’ decisions have the power to change someone’s life forever. However, if you are picked for a jury, you have a responsibility to actively participate in the decision making, and voice your opinion to your fellow jurors. Many of us have very stressful, busy lives, and we never stop to think that

one day, we may need six jurors to decide a case for us. If you needed a jury to resolve a legal dispute, you would want them to take their duties seriously. It is very important, that when, or if, that day comes that you are picked to serve on a jury, you step up, listen, while keeping an open mind, and make a fair decision. Although it may seem like an inconvenience at the time you receive the notice to present for jury duty, it is truly an integral part of our Court system, and one of the privileges of living in a democratic society. “We have a wonderful designer from New York who can design anything your heart desires,” says floor sales representative Diane Hein, a staff member since October 2008. Founded in 1976 by Roger Boroway, Midas Touch has been an anchor on the Post Road in Fairfield’s busy downtown. As the retailer has grown more successful, it has supported and contributed to local charitable organizations and been an active member of the local Chamber of Commerce. It has also allowed Boroway to become an avid collector of fine art and a classic car enthusiast. While providing a full complement of jewelry services, Boroway says the shop’s custom design work is a distinguishing element that makes Midas Touch stand apart from its competition. Salesperson Hein, who has been in retail for the past 20 years, says Midas Touch is the most exemplary business for which she has worked. “We try to be extremely helpful and listen to our customers’ needs and determine how we can assist them. We really bend over backwards to accommodate people.” Rolleri echoes Hein’s sentiments. “Midas Touch deals in fine, high-quality jewelry and is upscale. I worked for Tiffany’s and I think we compete with them as far as quality. I also worked on Jeweler’s Row in Philadelphia dealing with all sorts of jewelry. Midas Touch has a similar wide range and good selection. The shop definitely ranks up there. The Fairfield Museum and History Center Shop is a Treasure Quickly Being Discovered “It’s almost impossible not to find a gift which will be received with enthusiasm and delight in our gift shop,” says Lee Walther, manager and buyer for the Fairfield Museum and History Center gift shop, a wonderful treasure inside the museum. “Our visitors are always surprised at the wonderful and unique items displayed in the store and we consider our gift shop the ‘go-to-place’ when a buyer is looking for something special and a great shopping experience.

creative and astute about buying gifts that relate to major exhibits. For the current exhibit, It’s a Hit! A Hometown View of Our National Pastime, a retrospective on the history of baseball in Connecticut, she found a wealth of baseball treasures, including baseball-related art, sculpture and photographs by nationally known artists, as well as baseball-related games and toys. Those items will be on sale over the next five months until the exhibit closes January 2ND, 2011.

Visitors will find a multitude of elegant and stylish pieces for the home, personal use and for special occasions. The Fairfield Museum Shop features a collection of carefully selected tabletop accessories for entertaining and home décor; as well as books, one-of-a-kind jewelry, stationery, blown glass, candles, women’s accessories and children’s merchandise. Shoppers will also discover original pieces by featured artists throughout the year.

“In one case I’ve discovered a wonderful supplier, who used bits and pieces of game-used baseballs and bats, crafted into necklaces, cufflinks wallets and bottle openers,” Walther says. “There is a hologram on the back of each item that shows in which memorable game the ball or bat was used. It’s fascinating.” The gift shop hours are the same as the museum’s hours – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the week and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Museum members receive a 10 percent discount on their purchases. There is no admission for the gift shop and it is not restricted to museum goers.

Walther assures shoppers that they’ll be delighted with the shop and will want to visit again and again. Fairfield Museum and History Center members save 10% on Museum Shop items over $10. Personal Lessons

Locker room banter! With Debbie Brooks of Fitness solutions Does it really matter if you succeed? Hopefully your answer is yes. One day while I was in the locker room of a well known and very large gym, a woman came up to me and proclaimed “ how can I get your butt! And Thighs! And legs! And abs!“ My response? “What are you currently doing with your body? “ The woman looked at me funny at first then said “ everything, I take Pilates, kickboxing, I run, I take a weight lifting classes and I cycle” what happened next changed this woman’s out look on how she was training herself. I asked her a simple yet very important question “Are you satisfied with your results?” The woman seemed both annoyed and intrigued as she answered “ well obviously not!” this seems to unfortunately be a recurring problem with many gym dwellers. It’s all to common to get into the habit of taking the same classes or doing the same routine not for weeks or months but for years. And then you are left wondering why you are not reaping the benefits of such extremely hard work. I will explain to you what I explained to that woman, who is now one of my best training clients. Your beating a dead horse doing what you are doing now. Your routine needs to be a little something called tweaked. Which means basically you need to change it up. I know you’ve

heard it a hundred times, and I’m not just talking about switching from walking to jogging. What I am talking about is 3D motion Our bodies meaning our muscles as well as our joints function in 3 planes of motion Sagital : front to back; Frontal: side to side and Transverse: rotation (both internal and external) therefore in order for everything work efficiently we should train 3 dimensionally as well. Training 3 dimensionally allows us to: • Properly condition our bodies • Move with efficiency • And alleviate pain during functional movement So how do you train 3 dimensionally. First I will tell you it’s important to work where you are successful. And grow from there. What does that mean? well it means, unlike traditional training, which takes you to where you are unsuccessful and keeps you there until you magically become successful, lets take you to where you are thriving with a move-take a traditional walking lunge-and build upon your winning points in that move. Now we can do that in all the three planes we talked about above. Using the walking lunge again as an example, traditionally it is done sagitally, a forward stepping motion. But it can

also be preformed in the frontal plane or in a side to side motion (traditional side lunge) or it can be preformed in a transverse plane motion with an internally or externally rotated toe. And that’s just one example of one exercise. With 3D training there are literally thousands of exercises you can perform. The push up is another example of a traditional exercise that can be tweaked, for your benefit. You can perform a push up with your hand position being narrow, or wide, or you can internally and then externally rotated ( turning you hands in and out) them. Training should be beneficial right? Then make it work your while. Train 3 dimensionally. Work to your body to where you are successful, and keep at it! Push yourself to surpass your goals, and you will! When you choose a profession like personal training, it is imperative that you understand that people are trusting you with changing their lives. My main focus with you the reader and with my clients is for you to understand you can and will succeed with the right kind of training and exercise program. Got questions? Salsa Picante:

Moderately coordinated Caucasian male tries Latin Dance class and finds inspiration By Mike Lauterborn © 2010. All Rights Reserved. 4/5/10 Plantains, frijoles negros, Montecristo cigars and brown-eyed chiquitas batting their eyelashes and calling out “Guapo!” were the images that swirled around my head as I headed to The Dance Collective in Westport to meet Latin Dance instructor and business co-owner Amanda Parton. For the moment, I was Miguel de Cervezas and was about to partake in my first Salsa dance lesson! Very toned and tall, Parton ushered me right in. Her English name gave no hint of Latina spiciness but her body suggested otherwise. She was “La Mamacita”! I had expected a one-on-one lesson but suddenly found myself deposited into a class full of women led by a lithe hombre calling out, “I want to see those hips! HIPS!” It was Enrique Alarcon, Parton’s partner and founder of The Dance Collective. I quickly fell into line, all my illusions of suaveness going straight out the door as I tried to capture the steps he was demonstrating. “In salsa dancing, you have to imagine a center

point,” Alarcon explained to the group. Sensing my panic, a fellow classmate pointed to another participant, “Watch her, she’s Brazilian!” Forward, back, side to side, left, right… we all moved collectively like a school of bonefish, grooving to Celia Cruz beats. All the while, Enrique, like a mad toreador, drove us on, crowing like a wild tropical bird and clapping out a beat. “You have to move your hips, in a graceful way. You have them there for a reason!” he chided. The age range of the group was mid-30’s to mid-50’s, with an average age of 40. Though skill levels were mixed, all class members were enthusiastic and having fun. For Heather, 47, this was her fourth year with the program, pursuing a schedule of three 1-hour classes per week. A friend had initially encouraged her to try it. “It was so not me… but I came… and got hooked. It was out-of-thebox, different. I had been a runner and cyclist. This was a different challenge.” Fellow classmate Chiara Rudzin, 50, a former Manhattanite, says the program has “saved my spirit.” She explained, “I didn’t want to go to gyms or do Zumba. I wanted a class run like a Manhattan dance studio. I quickly got rid of eight pounds. I can see a difference in my dance

abilities.” Business founder Alarcon, 31, a native of Peru, was initially pursuing a law degree in college in his native country. It was a six-year program and he had completed four years when he began to more closely consider what he wanted to do with his life. Alarcon became a dance teacher when he was 16, performing for several different dance companies. “I would always have to sneak around my parents… and a macho cultural society. I thought I wanted to be an actor maybe… and wanted to go to Europe, to Italy. At one point, I just decided I didn’t want to be a lawyer anymore.” At age 23, Alarcon came to the U.S. for a sixmonth stay, expecting it would be easier to get travel papers for Italy. “I had many dreams in my head,” he said, spoke no English and had to look for work. He took a quick after-school program to learn the language and did odd jobs to earn wages. Then he started dancing and teaching, for free at first to get exposure. In 2005, he met Amanda and they started dancing together as partners in June of that year. In November 2008, the two formed The Dance Collective. “We’ve become best friends. It’s

easy to work with her. I learn from her a lot, she learns from me.” In Alarcon’s opinion, Amanda brings stability, is a very talented contemporary class leader and assumes a fair share of the workload, particularly administration and marketing. “We agree and disagree, but at the end of the day create a good work product. I appreciate that I can work with my best friend.” Parton echoes Alarcon’s sentiments. “We have a very strong relationship. He’s the closest person in my life, especially with my family overseas (Yorkshire, England). I think of him as a brother. He has amazing energy and lays it all out… he doesn’t hold back and people love getting the attention.” At present, the dance duo sublet their space from a gym. “We would love to have our own place and own name on a door. That would make it legitimate,” says Amanda. Their prospects seem rosy. Alarcon sums up, “She goes for it. I go for it. We’re not scared to do things.” The Dance Collective is located in Playhouse Square, 275 Post Road East, Westport, CT. 203521-6555. www.thedancecollectivect.com

RADIO TALK SHOW HOST TALKS ABOUT HER NEW BOOK As written by Nancy Burton in The Westport Patch.

new whistleblower revelations about BP, Wexler said.

secret recipe for chicken soup with matzoh balls (“Be warned: this takes two days”).

Lisa Wexler was interviewing Congressman Jim Himes live on her afternoon radio talk show recently when she demanded to know why the Obama Administration has not shut down all offshore oil rigs for safety audits in light of the ongoing BP catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico.

Wexler took the cue from her mother, investigated further, and pronounced Himes’ response even more unsatisfactory the next day on her radio show.

Wexler wrote the framework of the book, published by Dutton this year, but each chapter has personal, even intimate comments penned by Kamen and Zarin. There are chapters on friendship, dating, beauty and health, education, career, marriage, money and parenting.

What followed was like a chapter out of her new book, Secrets of a Jewish Mother.

Wexler and her mother see eye-to-eye on everything that matters - family love, values and loyalty - and almost everything else. They talk on the phone daily and Kamen has even been a guest on Wexler’s radio show.

Wexler dismissed Himes’ response -- that the U.S. Government lacks the capability to go out and check every rig to determine its potential for leaks -- as unsatisfactory on the air. No sooner was the segment over than the telephone in Wexler’s studio at 1400 WSTC/1350 WNLK rang. The caller was Wexler’s mother, Gloria Kamen, her most devoted fan. Kamen had tuned in to listen to the radio show on her computer from her home in Boca Ratan, Florida, as is her daily custom. “Mommy says to me, ‘You didn’t see ‘60 Minutes’”? Wexler related in an interview with Patch. Kamen, equally fired up over the BP calamity, fed Wexler the tip that the CBS program had just aired a piece with

“I’m really agitated about this one,” Wexler said.

“She’s a popular guest,” Wexler says affectionately. “It’s her energy, she’s very direct, very funny, very opinionated.” In other words, an older version of herself. And while Wexler’s new book’s title is Secrets of a Jewish Mother, it’s a play on words because it’s really about three Jewish mothers - herself, Kamen and her sister Jill Zarin, a star of the Bravo cable TV series “The Real Housewives of New York” - and their unusually close-knit relationship. (Lest Kamen be accused of inciting sibling rivalry, she has also appeared as Zarin’s guest on “Real Housewives” and was so popular she was asked to contribute an online advice column.) Wexler’s book is indeed full of secrets.

Such as how Wexler came to skip her senior year in high school to enroll at Johns Hopkins University (an unusual telephone call to the admissions office by Kamen), which of them had breast reduction surgery (that would be Jill), and how to keep a man after you’re married (“Who said your husband has to know everything?”). It even has Wexler’s

It is a recipe book for success and happiness for a woman who is Jewish, and it even has a glossary of the Yiddish terms sprinkled throughout the book, but the lessons can apply to everyone. “As you now know,” she writes at page 126, “the Jewish mother is matchmaker, but not only for people. We are always making connections, and one of the most important is connecting someone’s natural talents with a career that would allow those talents to flourish.” Wexler is a co-founder of Women in Power, a group of local women who convene at the Women’s Club of Westport to network and lead panel discussions on women and careers and balancing careers with family obligations. “We are really just trying to figure out how to keep our families in reasonably good shape while preventing our brains from dissolving into mush” is one of the book’s passages on balancing traditional roles of motherhood with career aspirations. Wexler is a pro in the balancing act department. After practicing law for 20 years, during which she and her husband raised two children, Wexler had grown to resent the law.

“I started thinking to myself, Why should I spend my time solving your problems?” she writes. “You created them, you solve them.” As the children’s chauffeur, she found herself talking back to talk radio and thought she could be a better host than the ones she listened to. Taking time out to study at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting, she soon landed positions at the Yale University radio and moved on to Cox’s 1400 WSTC/1350 WNLK, where the show airs live Monday to Friday from 4 to 6 in the afternoon. She’s won the Gold Coast Best Radio Personality award in 2009 and she’s just returned from Los Angeles where she was a recipient of the American Women in Radio and Television 2010 “Gracie” award in the “outstanding talk show -news” category. She interviewed Gov. M. Jodi Rell on her first show and ever since has been using the radio talk platform to “try to counter the dumbingdown of America” and be an opinionated bridge between commercial radio and National Public Radio. “As a child I was so listened to,” she said. “I was raised to believe everything I said had an impact.” Talking to her Jewish mother gave Wexler the confidence to talk to an estimated 40-75,000 daily listeners, she says. “I love it so much,” she says expressively. “I’m finally doing what I was born to do.”

Family & Child PHOTOGRAPHY

Matthew C. Abourezk Family Photographer I have been a photographer for more than 30 years but it wasn't until my first son was born (12 years ago) that I became interested in Family Photography. I have been an avid photographer of children ever since. I'm startled by how quickly the moments of my sons' childhood have flown by, and I'm grateful to have recorded their lives so meticulously. I shoot family keepsakes. I am not interested in shooting typical “smile for the camera!” portraits, I love to capture the joy in children. When kids are having fun, magic happens… magic that you can’t plan, magic that you can’t control, and magic that you will never see when you tell a kid to “smile for the camera”. Thinking Out Loud By Gina Brillon Today, while reaching for the first aid kit, I pulled a muscle in my butt cheek, how ironic. Here I was reaching for help and getting hurt in the process. It dawned on me that perhaps while working out I had over done it, pushed just a little too hard. I was so determined to work out every part of my body to the full extent, that I literally put my butt in danger. It was the physical embodiment of how I am when I’m in love. In retrospect, my new favorite word, I realize that the demise of my past relationships might have fallen apart for the same reason my body now seemed to be falling apart, I pushed way too hard.

I Wanna Know What Love Is

I’m currently on my third long term monogamous relationship, I was with a man for 5yrs who said he could never love me like I loved him, I dated another man for 3yrs that wanted to keep me in the backseat for the sake of his career and my current boyfriend well we’ve just had our first “Facebook relationship status” fight (why is it that guys have such a problem putting the “In a relationship” status on their pages?). The commonality in all these relationships was that I gave and I gave and I gave, expecting nothing back until I got just In his poem “The More Loving One” that, NOTHING back. I can comW.H. Auden writes ‘ If equal affec- pare all my relationships to a horse tion cannot be, let the more loving costume and I always end up getone be me’ it seems there is always ting the butt piece. an imbalance in relationships, one person loving more than the other, They (the relationship gurus) say well according to my research that the key to a long lasting happy reis. I’m not exactly sure where this lationship is communication, but imbalance stems from but it seems that seems highly unlikely if most prevalent in every relationship. Why relationships are totalitarian. Do is it that when two people share you want to know the most ironic a life together there is always one part of this whole scenario? You more willing or likely to sacrifice? Is would think that the one who loves there room for equality in love or is more would be the ruler, WRONG! it necessary that one person have Quiet often “the more loving one” who ends up just doing whatever it the upper hand?

takes to keep his/her partner happy, so what, you’re a glorified court jester? Dancing around trying to please the royals!!! No wonder relationships are so hard, they’re just like politics! And if we can’t get something as simple as democracy to work, how on earth do we expect to perfect or even understand the complexity of relationships? What’s a girl to do when the scales of love are so grossly one sided? This is more a question for you out there. Do you feel like love

is imbalanced? And is love the ability to accept this imbalance rather than try to correct it? I wanna know what love is, to you.
