Texas culture isn’t all cowboys and farms, as some people perceive it to be. Many are unaware that Texas has a rich German heritage that dates back to the 1840s. Growing up in Boerne, TX, I was surrounded by bits and pieces of this vibrant culture. I never understood the extent of the German influence on the Texas Hill Country until my research and interviews with some of the community members in Fredericksburg, another small town like Boerne, built upon German traditions.

Fredericksburg, founded in 1846 by German immigrants, is a prime example of this heritage. Named after Prince Frederick of Prussia, the town quickly became a hub for German settlers in Texas. The German influence is evident in Fredericksburg’s architecture, cuisine, and annual celebrations.

In this issue, I have written two articles highlighting the German culture that thrives in Fredericksburg. The first article dives into Oktoberfest’s annual celebration in the city’s heart, showcasing the lively festivities and deep-rooted traditions. Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg is a three-day event that features German music, dancing, food, and beer, attracting visitors from all over to experience this cultural festival.

The second article focuses on the Fredericksburg Brewing Company, a local brewery that is the oldest brewpub in Texas. Established in 1994, it continues the tradition of German brewing brought by the early settlers. This article offers a glimpse into the state’s brewing history and its German roots, highlighting the brewery’s dedication to authentic brewing techniques and recipes passed down through generations.

Some outsiders might perceive Texas through a narrow lens, missing its unique diversity. Texas is vast, covering a significant portion of the United States, and within its borders lies a tapestry of different cultures and histories. This diversity is part of what makes Texas so fascinating and rich in heritage.

Please take the time to read my articles and learn about the essential aspects of Texas history. Even if history isn’t your primary interest, you’ll discover great places to enjoy a local brew and experience the welcoming spirit of Texas hospitality!

TEXAS CELEBRATES GERMAN HERITAGE WITH

Texas has a rich and unique German history that dates back to the 19th century and has culturally impacted the Lone Star State forever. According to the World Population Review, around 2.4 million Germans live in Texas, which makes up 7% of the state’s entire population.

One of the significant organized efforts to bring Germans to Texas was led by the Adelsverein, a society founded in 1842 to protect German immigrants in Texas and establish a new German state within Texas. The Adelsverein established several settlements, with New Braunfels (1845) and Fredericksburg (1846) among the most notable. These towns became centers of German culture and influence.

While all of Texas acknowledges this history, New Braunfels and Fredericksburg passionately celebrate it through events like Oktoberfest and invite others to join them in the festivities.

Debbie Reeh, Oktoberfest Fredericksburg manager and event coordinator, said she has helped organize the festival since its inception in 1981 and has seen it bring communities together.

“Here in Fredericksburg, we are very proud to keep that culture alive through the festival to meet the various needs of our community,” Reeh said.

Texas’ German History

When Germans integrated into Texas, their culture left a significant mark— language, traditions, and architecture that still exist in Texas today.

German immigrants brought their language, and many communities continued to speak German for several generations. People who grew up in Texas and spoke German developed a dialect called “Texas German.”

“Texas German descended from a group of dialects spoken by the early Germanspeaking settlers in Texas. Texas German is a mixture of the original immigrants’, combined with English and some natural language changes over time. It is not a single dialect—it is spoken differently in different areas of Texas,” according to the German Dialect Project at UT Austin.

This dialect was prominent up until the first half of the 20th century. Now, there is estimated to be around 5,000 Texas German speakers.

The German influence on architecture is still present in the Hill Country region of Texas today.

When Germans settled here, they brought with them a variety of Old World building customs. They adapted these

customs to the materials and climate of Texas, forging a unique blend of German and Texan influences.

What is Oktoberfest?

The most significant way Germans continue their presence is through festivals like Oktoberfest.

The festival began in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen in Munich, Germany. Now, it is the world’s largest beer festival and a major cultural event held annually. It typically runs for 16 to 18 days, starting in late September and ending on the first weekend of October. The event gained popularity and is now celebrated all over the world.

Oktoberfest typically consists of beer tents, traditional food, Bavarian music, dances, parades, and so much more. Attendees often dress up in lederhosen for men and dirndls for women to create a traditional German environment.

Oktoberfest Fredericksburg

Oktoberfest Fredericksburg is Fredericksburg’s version of Munich’s Bavarian celebration. In 2022, the festival was named the “Most Authentic Oktoberfest in America” by travel website

Only in Your State, and it’s been identified as one of the best Oktoberfests in the U.S. by Fodor’s, Trip Advisor, and Travel magazine.

This year, it takes place from October 4 through October 6 in the historic downtown of Fredericksburg’s Marktplatz (Market Square). According to their website, the festival aims to recreate a Bavarian sense of “Gemütlichkeit,” a German-language word used to convey the idea of a state or feeling of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer.

Reeh said she and her team completely transform the grounds yearly to create a festive German environment using fresh flowers, music, dancers, decorations, and traditional art and crafts from German artisans.

“We’re a family festival environment,” Reeh said. “So many families come, and we have noticed over and over again throughout the years that more and more people dress in their German attire of dirndls and lederhosen.”

After this realization, Reeh said they added a dirndl contest several years ago for the families to participate in. The festival also has other activities for people to compete in, such as waltz and Polka contests.

Reeh said Fredericksburg’s long German history, paired with the dedication of Oktoberfest Fredricksburg’s volunteers and employees, makes this festival unique.

Other celebrations in Texas

Suppose Oktoberfest Fredericksburg isn’t possible for some. In that case, there are plenty of other festivals across Texas to

attend, such as Wurstfest in New Braunfels, Addison Oktoberfest, Oktoberfest Fort Worth, San Antonio Oktoberfest, and Galveston Island Oktoberfest.

Wurstfest in New Braunfels is from November 1 through the 10. It is in Landa Park and offers a scenic venue along the Comal River. It offers Authentic German music, food, beer, carnival, dancing, and craft vendors.

Addison Oktoberfest takes place September 19 through 22 in Addison Circle Park. It features Traditional German polka bands, beer tents, and authentic Bavarian cuisine. The festival is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, including kid-friendly activities and entertainment.

Oktoberfest Fort Worth is from September 25 through 28 at Trinity Park. It will feature German-style beer halls, traditional music, dancing, and local vendors. The event is set along the Trinity River, which provides a picturesque setting for the festivities.

The community of Beethoven Maennerchor hosts several San Antonio Oktoberfest events throughout October. Beethoven Maennerchor is one of the oldest German singing societies in Texas. The events will all feature authentic German food, beer, and music.

Galveston Island Oktoberfest takes place October 25 through 26 on the grounds of and streets adjacent to First Lutheran Church, 24th and Winnie—in historic downtown Galveston. The event is free and will include a cake wheel, raffle, and a variety of vendors.

SWEETWATER SPRINGS RANCH

LOWER PECOS RIVER OASIS

ACRES // WEST TEXAS // TERRELL COUNTY

Sweetwater Springs Ranch is a world unto itself, located downstream from Independence Creek and fronting for 1.3 miles on the west bank of the spring-fed Lower Pecos River. The ranch is located 25 miles south of Sheffield and I-10 off Hwy 349 on a well-maintained caliche road that dead-ends at the ranch.

Once part of the historic Banner Ranch, this 3,667.65±acre ranch is centered around Sweetwater Springs, which flows 2,000 gal/min into a clear, bass-filled lake. This lake is the source water to an elaborate irrigated pasture system and three tree-lined spring runs flowing into the Pecos. This area of the Lower Pecos was home to the Pecos Culture of hunter/ gatherers dating back 4,000 years, who left a legacy of extensive rock art over 8,000-square-miles. The area was also known for pioneers of the late 1800s such as Judge Roy Bean and his “law West of the Pecos,” as well as Lieutenant John Bullis, commander of the Seminole Indian Scouts who fought in the Pecos River skirmishes in 1870. Today, the Pecos River is a ranch and recreation neighborhood with a world-class canoe and kayaking experience to enjoy. Crossing through high canyon walls in a series of rapids and pools with world-class clear-water fishing, you’ll experience one of the most unique float trips in North America.

HEADQUARTERS

The Lower Pecos River is fed by a series of springs starting south of I-10. The largest, Caroline Spring, is located on the 19,500-acre Independence Creek Preserve, owned by The Nature Conservancy five miles upstream. This protected outflow of the EdwardsTrinity Aquifer changes the river into a spring-fed reach with water quality rivaling the Devils River! The ranch’s terrain is characterized as plateau country on top with steep, deep wooded canyons cutting through fortress limestone cliffs toward the river. The river here is easy to access by vehicles, while the canyon and high country roads have recently been improved. When entering the headquarters area, the temperature drops 15 degrees under the heritage pecans and other century-old shade trees. Sweetwater Springs at the headquarters creates a clear reservoir or lake, framed by a high limestone bluff on one side and giant trees on the other. The lake is not only a reservoir for irrigating the 18 acres of farmland, but it’s the center for

outdoor recreation, including a rope swing and swimming picnic area. Three spring runs come from the reservoir and disperse in different directions, eventually meandering all the way to the river. This property is a secluded and private water paradise. It’s your own Barton Springs!

The headquarters has a three-bed, three-bath home with a series of shops, barns, and an amazing pipe pen system with spring water running through several paddocks. Other improvements include a hunting camp along Geddis Canyon, where there is another spring nestled into a side canyon pouring out a huge volume of crystal-clear spring water with native fish. There are three wells on the ranch with two storage tanks and multiple water troughs. An amazing, recentlyimproved road system gives you access up and down the high mountains and along the river into the two large side canyon systems.

HABITAT

The ranch is situated at the convergence of three, biologically distinct eco-regions; the Texas Hill Country to the east, the

Chihuahuan Desert to the west, and the subtropical Tamaulipan Brushland to the south, creating one of the most unique wildlife habitats in the state. From ocotillo and sotol, to oak and juniper woodlands, to persimmon and ceniza, the ranch represents a crossroads of diverse habitats. The property’s browse and grasslands are in excellent condition as there has been a focus on wildlife resources. Native grasses, forbs, browse, brush, cacti, and trees not only provide excellent habitat for game species such as mule deer, quail, dove, turkey, mountain lion, aoudad, bobcat, and fox, but also for non-game species such as bear, Texas-horned lizard, neotropical songbirds, Texas tortoise, Rio Grande beaver, and native fish species. The abundance of live water along the spring runs and the Pecos River provides an opportunity to grow some of the largest oak and pecan trees in the region. Along the banks of Geddis Creek is a large, live-oak motte, providing habitat for migrating monarch butterflies and roosting areas for turkey.

WILDLIFE

The combination of river, canyons, topography, browse, and habitat creates a wildlife-rich environment for both the hunter and wildlife watcher. From whitetail population, Rio Grande turkey, dove, quail, mountain lion, and aoudad to neotropical songbirds, osprey, beaver, butterflies, fox, rabbits, and ringtail cat, the upland and riparian diversity of wildlife is unequaled.

The river itself is an important body of water for the region with its native fish and fauna, as well as game fish like small and large mouth bass, black bass, and catfish. With fly fishing in the shoals and riffles, as well as bottom fishing in the deep holes, this ranch is an angler’s dream.

WATER

The Lower Pecos River, much like the nearby Devils River, is supported by outflow from the Edwards-Trinity Aquifer and located in one the

most intact river environments in Texas. It offers unique, streamside habitat such as willow, live oak, hackberry, mesquite, river cane, and many riparian plants. This is recreation at its best. The Lower Pecos River area is all private land with limited access for launching canoes, creating a wilderness quality only found in our country’s largest National Parks. You can put into the river on this ranch and take out at Pandale below, which is a two-night trip.

Sweetwater and Geddis are recorded huge springs on the ranch that flow into the Pecos River. The lake and the spring runs provide miles of additional live water to the ranch. The 18-acre agricultural fields are watered by the 2,000 gal/min Sweetwater Spring, where at one time, the Banner family grew Alfalfa. There are unlimited opportunities to create orchards, vineyards, and gardens. $2,500 per acre/$9,169,125.

Recently, an eight-stall horse barn with a tack room, feed room, and bathroom was added to the northern section of the ranch to enhance its equestrian infrastructure. The new barn measures 70x75-feet with 12-foot overhangs to provide additional protection from the elements. The northern section, which includes 422± acres, has been managed for wildlife since the mid-90s. It is home to whitetail deer, axis deer, and blackbuck antelope. In recent years, hunting has been limited to family and friends. Sandy Creek runs through the northwest corner and six stock ponds provide surface water. Several active springs along the drainage areas hold water throughout normal rainfall years. In addition, the ranch has water rights to a deep well across RR 965 and has eight water wells within its perimeter. There is also a limestone rock-lined, underground water cistern on the north property. Five large-capacity, above ground water storage tanks serve the ranch compounds and several water troughs provide additional water for animals. The ranch features a north and south headquarters, which is an ideal configuration for a private retreat or commercial enterprise. The centerpiece of the north headquarters is a custom-designed home located on a ridge with expansive views of Enchanted Rock. Thick limestone walls and high ceilings hearken back to the area’s pioneer roots, while the longleaf pine beams, custom trim, hardwood floors, and custom cabinetry add warmth. The main house features an open kitchen with commercial appliances and textured native stone countertops, a huge living room with fireplace, a glassed-in corner room, and a screened porch dining room which overlooks the yard and pool areas. The master suite includes a bath and a lovely, screened sun porch with windows framing Enchanted Rock. A home office and laundry room complete this home. Rock walkways connect the house to the nearby pool and patio area with sweeping views of Enchanted Rock. An adjacent, self-contained, chinked cedar cabin serves as a separate guest house. The hunting lodge, which is a converted vintage barn, anchors a separate compound. In addition to three downstairs bedrooms with three private baths, the second-story bunkhouse can sleep up to eight people in four beds with trundles. The second story has a kitchenette, a gathering space, and bath facilities while the large downstairs has a full kitchen, as well as an outdoor gathering area with a gazebo, pool, fire pit, and games. The original farmhouse—dating back to the early 20th century—provides additional lodging for guests or staff. The ranch office is located in a separate building adjacent to the home. An old country store provides the perfect gathering place, with a game processing area, as well as a walk-in cooler and ample storage. At the southern headquarters, the four±-bed, three-bath main house is built on the limestone bones of a 1900s German farmhouse and nestled into a beautiful grove of oak trees. The expansive house features a downstairs master suite, a large kitchen, two large living rooms, two upstairs bedrooms, and one-two downstairs bedrooms. An upstairs room off the attic could be used for an office or supplemental storage. The home was recently refreshed with new floors, paint, and a bathroom remodel. The pool and patio are the centerpiece of the outdoor gathering area, with a panorama of gorgeous Hill Country views. Comanche Rock Ranch’s potential as a personal retreat or a commercial enterprise is limited only by the new owner’s vision. Come see a life beyond the ordinary! Call Howard W. Hood, Broker at 830-739-3815 to experience the potential of Comanche Rock Ranch for yourself. Originally listed at $25 million, reduced to $18.9 million.

Twin Creeks Ranch, located about 11 miles from Kerrville, boasts iconic, gently rolling Hill Country terrain and a 300-foot elevation change from the highest point on the southeast corner to the lowest point on the northern boundary. Bottomlands with deeper soils encompass about 150 acres of the ranch, providing strong pastureland. The landscape is pockmarked with small canyons. Between 50 and 75 acres of cedar have been strategically cleared along the ridge lines. Disturbed areas have been re-seeded with native grasses to further enhance the habitat. The over-story features mature post oaks and live oaks, while the under-story is comprised of a mix of native brush, browse, and forbs that serves as a buffet for wildlife. Whitetail deer and a small number of feral hogs call the ranch home. Both mourning doves and waterfowl pass through during their migratory seasons. Hunting has been private and limited. The perimeter is high fenced and improved roads make the entire ranch accessible. Live water is a rarity and a highly sought after treasure, but Twin Creeks, as the name implies, enjoys an abundance of water. Stretching from the southern boundary to the northern boundary, the year-round Fall Creek runs across the ranch for approximately one mile, providing crystalline water for wildlife and recreation. Wolf Creek, which meanders onto the ranch and converges with Fall Creek, enhances the land’s natural ambiance and the options. An approximately five-acre lake, in close proximity to the main house, is stocked with bass and outfitted with floating docks. It is the perfect place for angling, paddling, or even jet skiing. The ranch also has two water wells. The two-story, 3,700-square-foot main house—which displays a statement-making mixture of limestone, stucco, and cedar posting—is the perfect backdrop for Hill Country living. The four-bed, four-and-one-half-bath house blends design touches from Texas, Mexico, and the southwest, making it perfectly suited to its locale. The well-appointed interior is a study in rustic elegance, with solid wood cabinetry and beams, a mix of stone and wood floors, an oversized limestone fireplace, soaring ceilings, and plenty of windows to bring the light inside. The kitchen is anchored by a butcher block island and its own fireplace. Outdoor entertainment is easy with the front or back porch showcasing long views, in addition to a back patio, a covered sitting area, and a barbecue area with a fire pit. The creek, which runs right behind the main house, provides the soundtrack for

outdoor gatherings. The main house has a detached two-car garage with two apartments above. The apartments can be individually accessed and used for staff or overflow guests. In addition, the property features a two-bed, two-bath house built in the same style as the main house. Encompassing 1,800±-square-feet, the house, which includes a kitchen, a living area, and a sunroom, could be purposed as guest or staff housing. It also has a porch on the front and car port in the back. Twin Creeks Ranch is also outfitted with a four-stall limestone and wood horse barn that measures about 4,600-square-feet. The barn includes a veterinary room/lab, an office, a tack room, and two storage rooms. The barn also has a game processing area out back with running water and a winch system. Call Howard W. Hood, Broker at 830-739-3815. Listed for $17,160,000.

the land, providing shade and shelter for game. Nine water wells with varying production and several stock ponds are scattered throughout the ranch. BIG MOUNTAIN RANCH

2,465 ± ACRES // CENTRAL TEXAS // UVALDE COUNTY

The Big Mountain Ranch is a 2,465±-acre property surrounding the northeast side of Uvalde, TX; adjoining the city limits with frontage on Hwy 90, FM 2369, and Hwy 83. It also offers over four miles of rail frontage. The ranch is currently being operated as an income-producing irrigated farm and hunting operation, with an ASR forbearance program as well. A cell phone tower—accessed by a easement—located at the top of Big Mountain also generates income. This ranch allows several different opportunities and options for the prospective buyer. It offers great potential for material sales, conservation easements, solar power, residential and commercial development, and water sales. There are four permitted Edwards Aquifer irrigation wells on the ranch along with a few other domestic wells; gpm ranging from 790 to 1,500. These allow for an annual groundwater withdrawal amount of 1,691 acre-feet; 795 acrefeet of which are unrestricted and 895 are base irrigation groundwater. This water is currently pumped to six pivots irrigating approximately 650 acres. There is another pivot on the ranch that is currently not being used. The Leona River and Taylor Slough run through the ranch, holding pockets of water during normal rainfall along with a handful of tanks. The remainder of the ranch is dry cropland, native pasture, and brush. Four of the pivots belong to the ranch and the other three would need to be negotiated with the sale. The ranch is partially high fenced around the perimeter and also has some interior high fencing. Big Mountain itself is totally high fenced, consisting of approximately 600 acres which would make for a nice exotic pasture. The wildlife on the ranch is all native to the area including deer, turkey, quail, aoudad, and hogs. There are no minerals to convey with the sale and no current mineral leases. The only current structural improvements on the ranch are a few equipment sheds.

The ranch has an abundance of character with favorable topography ranging from 320 to 440 feet, along with great soils and big brush in the lower portions. Gravel hills characterize the high points and there are also some open fields with good Buffel grass and numerous preexisting roads. Improvements on the ranch are modest, but very usable for the weekend outdoorsman. The house consists of two bedrooms, one bath, and a very nice sized kitchen and living room. In addition to the house, are three older implement barns and one covered shed with a cement floor. There is also a shooting range near the house for sighting in your rifles. In regard to the perimeter fencing, there is approximately two-and-one-half miles of low fence and two miles of high fence. The ranch is well watered with two working water wells and a third that needs some repair. There are three ponds that hold water after good precipitation and four different creek drainages through the middle of the ranch that provide extra water locations. Wildlife on the ranch is consistent with southern Texas native species, including whitetail deer, hogs, turkey, and quail. The creek drainages provide good cover and roosting for the turkey, which seem to be very abundant. Quail can also be heard all over the ranch. Only light family hunting has occurred on the property over the past several years. There are no minerals to convey with the ranch and no current production or leases.

Craft beer and community intertwine seamlessly at Fredericksburg Brewing Company. Established in 1994, it holds the prestigious title of the oldest brewpub in Texas. Back then, microbreweries—small, local breweries specializing in unique, limited-production beers—had just been given the green light in the Lone Star State. Fredericksburg Brewing Company was the pioneer, opening its doors to a new era of Texan beer.

Courtney Walker, who co-owns the family-run brewery with her sister Haley, knows this place inside out. They grew up

immersed in every aspect of the business, working alongside their parents, Richard and Rosemary Eston. Now, Courtney and Haley are at the helm, steering the brewery through its daily operations with the same passion their parents had.

“The plan for our company is to keep it in the family for generations, and if we can grow, we will,” Walker said. “But for now, that small “hometown feel” is what we want—we want to keep Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg.”

Richard and Rosemary had a vision when they left Houston for Fredericksburg. They saw the town’s lively community and rich German heritage as the perfect backdrop for their microbrewery dream.

Fast forward to today, and Fredericksburg Brewing Company is celebrating its 30th

anniversary, firmly embedded in the heart of this vibrant town.

From day one, the Estons aimed to give back to the community. They wanted to draw people to Fredericksburg and contribute to its charm.

“Our parents always instilled in us, you know, we build to keep, not to sell,” Walker said. “So that’s something my sister and I have taken to heart.”

It’s this family-oriented, local touch that makes Fredericksburg Brewing Company so special. The brewery isn’t just about great beer; it’s an experience. They have an air-conditioned biergarten and 12 cozy “bed and brews”—a unique take on the traditional bed-and-breakfast, where you can enjoy a beer and a place to stay. For those on the go, there’s also a logger room for quick stops.

“To this day, we still have our own seasonal craft brews,” Walker said. “We do not bottle or distribute, so the only way you can get our beer is if you actually come to visit the brewpub in Fredericksburg.”

In true German fashion, Fredericksburg celebrates all things Bavarian, with Oktoberfest being the pinnacle. As the town gears up for this annual festival, the brewery joins in the excitement.

Starting Oct. 1, you’ll find Oktoberfestthemed merchandise and a special Oktoberfest beer on tap. But that’s not all—this fall, you can also savor brews like Not So Dumb Blonde Ale, Peace Pipe Pale Ale, Pioneer Porter, Harper Valley IPA, El Hefe, and the special Anniversary Double IPA, celebrating their 30th year.
