2020 Graduates Accountancy

Dear Graduating Seniors and Master of Accountancy students, Well, I certainly wish I was conveying the following in person as opposed to from my basement work bunker. But, as Miamians have always done, we adapt and thrive! Mainly, I want to express my sincere congratulations on your successful graduation from a very rigorous and highly regarded Accountancy program! What a wonderful, well-deserved accomplishment! As graduates, you are now part of a large, but close knit family of Miami University alums. Remember to keep in close contact with your classmates as they are a great source of both professional and personal support! Also, please keep in touch with Miami and, in particular, the Accountancy Department. One of the pillars of our programs’ many successes is the tremendous, multifaceted support we receive from our loyal alums. In this sense, we depend on your continued involvement with our faculty, students and staff. I have very much enjoyed the privilege of working with and/or teaching you over the last several years! Please keep in touch, you are all very much welcome to contact me or stop by to talk whenever you’re on campus. Congratulations again and I wish you the very best! Love & Honor, Drew

Dear Class of 2020: Congratulations to an Accountancy graduate class who will not soon be forgotten. You were here for during many exciting transitions and challenges— starting with being the first class to experience the First-Year Integrated Core to being constantly reminded how the world is changing to be more data driven to experiencing a world-, generation-, and life-changing event that will launch your career in directions and ways that will be defined in the months and years to come. We hope that your time at Miami was exhilarating both personally and intellectually as most of you entered as high-performing high school teenagers and leave as adults prepared to do your part in shaping the future of the professional fields, individuals, and communities you impact. We as faculty at the Farmer School of Business and Department of Accountancy want you to know that we enjoyed challenging those of you we taught in class or engaged in other activities on campus. We believe that Miami does better than most any University is that we prioritize student engagement both inside and outside of the classroom. We have missed seeing you complete this journey in person but have been impressed with how you have handled the transitions forced by quarantine conditions. We have no doubt that you will prove to be adaptable leaders in your careers based on the many transitions you witnessed during your time at Miami. Please come back often to campus and take any available opportunities to stay engaged with the accountancy department or other organizations that you enjoyed during your time here. I empathize with the frustration of not having the graduation closure you expected. Hopefully, this scenario means that you will never fully close your connection and the spirit you had as Miamians! Love and Honor! Brian Ballou

There is a poem from the Chinese Tang Dynasty that reads: For a grander view, persevere and travel further (

欲穷千⾥⽬,更上⼀层楼).

To our graduating seniors and MAcc students, congratulations on your accomplishments and best wishes for your next adventure!

Hello, there! This is Dr. Chen with my TA (Treats Always), Yuki, sending a message to all graduating accounting seniors. Please accept my sincerest congratulations to each one of you on achieving this important milestone! I cannot imagine what you have been through over the past month with all the unexpected changes, but I do know that you are an amazing group showing incredible agility and a great and positive attitude towards the finish line during this unprecedented and difficult time. You should be proud of yourself! Do not let physical distancing take away the bonding and the connections you’ve established with many people at Miami. I wish you the very best and look forward to seeing you again on campus and/or at Starbucks in the future! Toast to all of you, the class of perfect vision (2020)!

Po-Chang Chen

It’s been such a privilege to see you grow and discover all you can accomplish – thanks for letting me be a part of your college years! To send you on your way, here’s my top 10 list of things to remember every day. 10) Consume information broadly and then make up your own mind – don’t simply accept what others tell you. 9) Find your own voice – and use it to fight for your seat at the table. 8) “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” -Anonymous 7) Get comfortable with being uncomfortable – if you take smart risks, opportunities will rain down on you. 6) Your reputation, both personally and professionally, is everything – protect it with your life. 5) When you feel like you’ve hit an obstacle, bang your head against the wall today – and embrace the opportunity in it tomorrow. 4) Every person’s judgments and actions come from experiences and motivations you may not see –slow down to consider where others may be coming from and treat them with kindness and respect. 3) Give back – and I don’t mean with just money. 2) You have a unique combination of knowledge, skills and spirit – use the power that brings to make positive change in the world. And the most important thing to remember every day: 1) Have fun! Annie Farrell

2020 Accountancy graduates, I thoroughly enjoyed teaching and getting to know many of you this year. Beyond the classroom, it was wonderful to see several of you “strut your stuff” in the Forensic Accounting Case Competition. From class presentations to case competitions to our informal interactions, it is abundantly clear that you have become business professionals and are prepared and “beyond ready” to begin your careers. Please take time to celebrate this fantastic life achievement with family and friends, whenever that is possible. Also, remember that although you lost some cherished time in Oxford this spring, it will always be a second home no matter where life takes you. So, please come back to visit your alma mater, plan mini and larger reunions with your classmates, and do not forget to stop by Farmer and say hello to your old professors. Congratulations! Jon Grenier

I am so sorry, especially for the seniors, that we all are having to spend the last half of this spring semester away from Miami’s amazing campus and our close friends and colleagues. Like many things in life, this situation was largely out of our control. However, in my opinion, a big part of success and happiness involves adapting to whatever life throws at you and doing so with a positive attitude. I hope that each of you makes time to come back to campus to be with friends and family again. I congratulate you on your wonderful college careers! As time goes by, please do make the effort to stay in touch with the people that are most special to you.

Dr. Dan Heitger

Congratulations on your outstanding achievement! I hope you will lead others through our example of integrity, respect, and accountability. Love & Honor! Best, James Yibo (James) Zhang
