MEET THE CROPTEC Steering Committee

New for this year’s show, we introduce to you our committee of carefully selected members who bring insight and expertise from growers, agronomists and industry thought leaders. This mix of highly skilled and experienced individuals will be on hand to provide insight and actionable advice during the event. The committee help shape the industry, inform our attendees and promote The CropTec Show as a valuable space for knowledge exchange.

COLIN CHAPPELL

Colin Chappell is an award-winning arable farmer from Northern Lincolnshire. Currently, custodian to 645 hectares of heavy clay loams in the Ancholme Valley, he runs a wide and diverse rotation with less productive land growing miscanthus. Around 5.5% of the farm is dedicated to environmental measures, and every year around 300 schoolchildren visit the farm to learn where their food comes from. Passionate about soil health, his current focus is on nutrient use e ciencies and decreasing his carbon footprint. As a former AHDB monitor farmer, he cites knowledge exchange as key to his progressive approach to agriculture.

THOMAS GENT

Thomas Gent is a fourth-generation farmer from South Lincolnshire. He and his family farm 800 hectares and have been doing so regeneratively for 15 years. Thomas is also the UK market lead for Agreena. Agreena operates Europe’s largest carbon farming programme. With the sector going through a huge period of change, Thomas is keen to promote the bene ts of great knowledge-sharing between farmers and experts.

HARRY HENDERSON

SARAH COWLRICK

Following a career in farm business management and overseeing one of the rst benchmarking systems with ICI, Sarah Cowlrick heads up the Association of Independent Crop Consultants (AICC) as its chief executive. She has strong organisational and communication skills and an exceptional knowledge of agronomists throughout the UK. She manages the continued independent agronomy market share growth and success of the AICC national technical winter conference, R&D trials, member training and the summer technical event as well as outside contracts with a team based in Hampshire and a Board of Directors, all established agronomists throughout the UK.

Harry Henderson started out as a tractor, combine and crop sprayer operator for Rothamsted Research, then becoming farm manager at Monsanto Cambridge. From there he took a role with John Deere as a crop systems specialist involved in sales support in combine harvester, crop sprayer and precision technology products. In 2013, Harry joined AHDB as a regional manager for the North of England and is now technical knowledge exchange manager with a focus on knowledge transfer, mechanisation, soil management and sustainable arable farming.

WILL OLIVER

MICHAEL KAVANAGH

Michael Kavanagh is a farm manager from Shropshire who was a Soil Farmer of the Year nalist in 2020. A focus on biology, manure, cover crops and correct nutrition allow him to farm successfully. He grows a diverse range of combinable crops including milling wheat, malting barley, and quinoa among others. Farming operations extend to 1,700 acres on a mixture of land owned, contract farmed and grazing licensed.

PATRICK LEVINGE

Patrick Levinge is based in the Cotswolds and has worked for Velcourt for four years, with most of this time as head of agronomy. The Velcourt Advisory Services is made up of nine agronomists from North Yorkshire down to the south coast. His time is spent mainly with clients but also with a remit to develop the team. There is an ever-increasing requirement for good independent advice and they have their own R&D team within the business, along with farming about 60,000 hectares in the UK.

Will Oliver is a fourth-generation farmer working with the family as part of a diverse farming business. The business includes a wide range of activities from arable, poultry, glamping and lettings. Will is on the National Crops board, Maize Growers Association Council and is an ambassador for Clean Up Britain. The mainstay of the farming business has been arable. The organic manures from the poultry has revolutionised the business’ cost of production, especially during this volatile time. Will is passionate about e ciency and moving the business forward. He utilised manures by growing grain maize for GLW feeds and is seeing huge bene ts to the soils by bringing cover crops, sheep and using manures into the rotation. The business is moving towards direct drilling and reducing xed costs and working on improving e ciency further, with the future aim of being net zero.

Come and meet the Anglian Water Catchment Management Team at CropTec. We have invited industry leaders to come and discuss and debate:

The Future of Farming – Preparing for What the Future Might Hold

If you have a question on this hot topic, come and share it with us and our guests and we’ll try and give you the answers.

The Water Hub

Our sessions at the Water Hub will be chaired by Jill Hewitt, chief executive of the National Association of Agricultural Contractors and we will welcome 11 industry experts, Professor Tim Hess, Cranfield Professor of Water and Food Systems Irrigation; Pam Chambers, British Sugar Technical Support Manager; Simon Day, Farm Manager at AH Worth; Alice Cannon, Farmacy Agronomist and regional technical Support Manager; Andrew Laughton, Beef Farmer of the Year 2018; Kelly Hewson-Fisher, Savills Head of Rural Research; Tim Harper, Director of Blankney Estates; Lincoln Heath, Abstraction Group; Guy Smith, Farmer and NIAB Board Member; Ron Granger, Limagrain Arable Technical Manager; Martin Williams, former AHDB Monitor Farmer and Contractor; and Andrew Ward MBE, Farmer and Founder and Chair of Forage Aid.

The sessions will run from 11:45am on both mornings and 13:15pm on both afternoons.

About Anglian Water

Farmers play a key role in not only producing food for the nation but also in protecting the wider environment. Anglian Water has eight Catchment Advisors across the Anglian Water region. We work with farmers, landowners and agronomists to help protect our crops, food, rivers and drinking water. Understanding the agricultural industry puts us in a good position, we know how important our relationship is with farmers so that we can maintain healthy crops and healthy water.

We work with and support farmers to find ways of reducing pesticide and nutrients found in our ground and surface water. We understand that this isn’t always easy and so we offer grants to help support and develop new and innovative solutions to local water quality challenges (pesticides, nitrates and phosphates and soil loss) in key priority catchments across the Anglian Water region.

Richard Reynolds heads up Anglian Water’s team of agricultural advisors. He says: “These days the pressures on farmers are huge, but when it comes to water quality, doing nothing is not an option. The Anglian Water Catchment Team have been working with farmers since 2015 and I am extremely proud to see the diverse array of solutions and success we have delivered together. Our catchment approach was recognised for a Water Industry Award in 2022, evidencing how raw water protection can be achieved through partnership working at catchment scale.”

SMART FARMING Hub

UPL will host the Smart Farming Hub on their stand at CropTec this year. Visitors will also discover more about their Natural Plant Protection (NPP) range of biosolutions, allowing farmers to reduce reliance on traditional chemical pesticides without compromising e cacy or yield.

NPP was rst launched at last year’s CropTec. Looking ahead to spring agronomy programmes, their agship bio-fungicides Thiopron (sulphur) and Iodus (laminarin) will feature prominently. UPL’s technical experts will be on hand to advise farmers and agronomists about how to best use them in combination with conventional chemistry for cost-e ective disease control.

The NEW Pantera with DirectInject for less spray time

Targeting a specific plant protection product to a precise area of the field is now possible with DirectInject.

Offering the utmost in flexibility, the new DirectInject system pumps an additional undiluted plant protection agent directly into the spray line on demand - meaning less passes with the sprayer, less product used and better timeliness – a win-win situation for both profitability and environmental protection.

And now the AMAZONE Pantera self-propelled sprayer comes with a choice of tank sizes from 4,500 litres to 7,000 litres and boom widths up to 48 metres - so don’t get left behind; spraying technology is changing and the AMAZONE Pantera is leading the way in intelligent crop protection.
