LAMMA 2022: Back on show HARVESTING AND GRAIN BDC SKANDIA H-LINE

BALING AND BALE HANDLING McHALE

BDC Systems will showcase Skandia Elevators’ next generation grain handling elevators – the H-Line. Aimed at larger farm enterprises, commercial grain storage operators and milling plants, all requiring high tonnage grain handling capability, the H-Line offers elevators which are easier to maintain, have optimised flow for less wear and tear to both machinery and grain and can now reach an overall height of 70 metres. The company will also display a Svegma continuous flow drier, for which it has seen increasing demand during the recent unpredictable harvests.

McHALE has expanded its range of variable chamber balers with the introduction of the McHale V8940 non-chopper baler and the McHale V8950 15-knife chopper baler. They are designed to produce dense bales from 0.6 metres to 1.9m in diameter and said to contain 30 per cent more crop in a 1.9m bale than in the company’s 1.68m V6 bale. New features include a higher capacity intake offered by a new pick-up, with a choice of cam track or cam-less designs, larger lateral feed augers and rotor. The bale chamber has three heavy-duty endless belts, and the V8 has a high-performance netting system, automatic greasing and McHale’s Expert Plus control console.

BALING AND BALE HANDLING SPREAD-A-BALE LITE SPREAD-a-Bale launches a new compact self-loading straw spreading machine suited to one-tonne loaders for 500kg rectangular bales. Called the Lite, the 650kg machine combines a new loading system with the ability to spread straw up to 12 metres and generate minimal dust. The rear panel and one side panel have been removed from the established design to reduce weight, while the system features four bale hooks to grab and facilitate loading the bale. Power from Spread-a-Bale’s hydraulic manifold allows bales to be distributed from the stack using one materials handler.

The range is fitted with heavy-duty components to offer a machine which is rugged enough to handle the toughest of crops and ground conditions, such as in straw baling operations.

TECHNOLOGY AG-DRIVE SMARTPHONE APP AG-drive will introduce its new cloudbased smartphone app designed to help manage and eliminate paperwork for farm businesses. Functions include the ability to record digital telematic job records and send jobs direct to operators, using Google Maps to direct them to the starting point. Users can receive push notifications of scheduled jobs, travel to jobs, in progress jobs and completed jobs. Job operations are fully customisable so the app and the way billing is organised can be tailored to suit specific jobs. Material and chemical uses can also be added to a job and uploaded photos can be attached along with comments and

notes. Other features include the facility to carry out vehicle and implement prestart checklists and health and safety risk assessments before starting job recording.

compatibility and plant counting. The new version of the software will be on show at LAMMA, where visitors can experience how it works using a VR headset. The new software will enable users to see a whole field with a bird’s eye view. Rather than only viewing individual scouting points, the new interface, Scout Spheres, offers high resolution overviews of entire fields combined with the ability to inspect leaf-level scout-point data.

TRACTORS KUBOTA

TRACTORS MASSEY FERGUSON MASSEY Ferguson will be represented at the show by dealer Chandlers Farm Equipment, which will present the manufacturer’s latest developments. This includes the updated 6S and 7S tractor ranges from 135-180hp and 155-190hp, respectively, with new styling, armrest, joystick and terminal taken from the 8S series. The higher horsepower 8S now offers two more models to top out at 305hp, the flagship 8S.305 having

the Dyna-VT CVT transmission as standard. A flagship model has also been added to the 7S range, with 210hp, 6.6-litre AGCO Power engine, 2.88m wheelbase and standard Dyna-VT transmission. The MF 7S.210 is intended to bridge the gap to the 205hp, larger framed MF 8S.205. It is available in Massey Ferguson’s Efficient or Exclusive specification packages, with a choice of control and comfort levels.

KUBOTA will present its latest M6002 tractor series, with a choice of power outputs from 122-142hp using Kubota stage V engines. It offers an eight-speed powershift transmission, with three robotised ranges to provide a 24x24 push-button gearbox. The option of a creeper transmission increases the choice of ratios to 32x32. Weighing just six tonnes, the new

M6002 also features Kubota’s portal front axle with bevel gear drive and the addition of Bi-speed technology to increase traction and manoeuvrability. The M6002 will also showcase Kubota’s new agreement with leading manufacturer MX to supply fore-end loaders. This covers all M-series models, including the M4003, M5002, MGX-IV, M6002 and M7003 models, spanning 66-170hp.

TRACTORS BASAK THE new Basak 5120 Red Power tractor features a 116hp four-cylinder Stage IV engine with 32x32 fourspeed powershift transmission and offers lift capacity of 5,500kg. In the cab there are ergonomic

controls and a multi-controller, while hitching up is eased with the addition of fender-mounted controls. The independent pto offers four speeds and specification includes a trailer braking valve.

TRACTORS McCORMICK AND LANDINI AGRIARGO UK, the UK and Ireland branch of McCormick and Landini tractor-maker Argo Tractors, will launch a number of new models. Taking centre stage on the McCormick portion of the stand will be the new X6HD, a brand new range which features an Argo-designed and built powershift transmission. There are three models in the new range: the 135hp X6.413; the 145hp X6.414; and the 155hp X6.415. All figures are maximum power outputs, produced by 4.5-litre NEF 45 engines from FPT, with four cylinders and four valves per cylinder. Other McCormick exhibits will include tractors from the long wheelbase X7 series – the X7.624

VT-Drive and a model from the X7.6 P6-Drive semi-powershift series. The focus of the Landini area of the stand will be on smaller tractors suited to specialist and stock tasks. Representative tractors from the 49-57hp Mistral 2 range have a Kohler Stage V three-cylinder engines and an exhaust gas after-treatment system which helps maintain a compact design. Also on display will be models from the Rex 4 series. Available in fruit, special and vineyard versions, these 75-112hp models can be specified with options including cab suspension and Robo-Shift electro-hydraulic reverse shuttle.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR HEDGECUTTERS SHELBOURNE REYNOLDS SHELBOURNE Reynolds’ new 7000 and 8000 series models, replacing its 700 and 800 series flagship hedgecutter ranges, will make their national debut. There are five models in the new 8000 series, heavy-duty machines suiting high-hour operators, such as contractors. The 8060T has a retracted reach of 4.8 metres and maximum reach of 6m, while the comparable figures for the 8070T are 5.5m and 7m and those for the 8080T are 6.2m and 8m. There are also two VFRT models with variable forward reach as well as telescopic capability. The new 7000 series, which comprises two models – the 7060T with 6m telescopic reach and the 7062VFR with 6.2m outward reach plus variable forward reach – takes many of its design features from the

larger models and they are styled similarly. A new operating system is also being launched. The new S-Touch system combines joystick control for the immediate operating functions of the machine, with a six-inch touch-screen for altering settings and function responses, monitoring service requirements and accessing a full operator’s manual.

MATERIALS HANDLING STOLL PROFILINE LOADERS LYNX Engineering will unveil the new generation of Stoll ProfiLine front loaders, which now offer extended model choice to fit tractors between 50 and 300hp-plus. The range incorporates a technology platform which offers the option of Work Area Restrictions,

a system of sensors, which, for example, can automatically restrict loader height when working in barns with low overhead space. Payload weighing will also be available, enabling operators to weigh the load on the job, ensuring material loading accuracy in real time. A stronger double-acting lifting cylinder has been fitted for more lifting power. In addition, Stoll’s Z-Kinematics technology, which frees the operator’s view of the implement by concealing the mechanical parallel guide rods within the lifting arm booms, has been improved by lengthening the lower lift arm to provide increased lifting height, while the cross bar has been optimally positioned for maximum operating visibility.

MATERIALS HANDLING HAUER LOADERS

AUSTRIAN manufacturer Hauer presents its second generation XB Bionic II loader, which features new styling, reduced weight and improved visibility over attachments. The brand name XB Bionic

stands for the patented Hauer X-kinematics, plus the integration of tipping cylinders and mechanical parallel control elements inside the boom for full protection of all working elements and easy cleaning.

MATERIALS HANDLING BOBCAT BOBCAT’S new generation R-Series agricultural telehandler range will receive its first public outing, with the top-of-the-range TL43.80HF Agri 4 Star model and the compact TL30.60 telehandler on display. Including these models, Bobcat’s R-Series agricultural telehandler range provides a choice of seven models with Stage V engines, covering maximum lifting capacities between 2.6 and 4.3 tonnes, with lifting heights from six metres to 8m. A new cab design features a Grammer Maximo Dynamic air suspension seat with heating, featuring a suspended armrest with joystick, new LCD colour display available with a larger seven-inch touch-screen with built-in radio and a phone page allowing the operator to dial their contacts instantly. The new Bobcat multifunctional

joystick enables faster operations. An FNR button located at the back of the joystick is controlled using the index finger, allowing the operator to use their thumb to actuate the usual boom and auxiliary functions and new smart functions, such as the Auto Grab, the bucket shaking feature, the boom float and the speed shifting system.

SPRAYERS KNIGHT 5,000-LITRE SPRAYER

KNIGHT Farm Machinery is launching a new model in its 1850 self-propelled sprayer range. The 1850V features a 5,000-litre stainless steel spray tank and added under-chassis clearance, yet still has a lower centre of gravity than its stable-mates due to a revised

tank design with single sump and nearside extension for the integrated 500-litre clean water tank and new circular induction hopper. A lower boom folding angle also reduces the overall height of the machine by around 50cm.

SPRAYERS CHAFER RAVEN HAWKEYE 2

SPRAYERS HOUSEHAM CAB UPDATES HOUSEHAM’S Spirit, AirRide and Harrier self-propelled sprayers are now being fitted with a state-of-theart X10 cab from Claas which brings new levels of refinement and operator comfort. This replaces the current Excalibur unit, offering more space, a higher spec interior and better visibility. Views to the boom have been improved in particular, with large, sweeping corner windows and a redesigned engine canopy with chamfered corners.

Standard features of the X10 include automatic air conditioning, a Bluetooth radio, three-way tilting steering column and adjustable sun blinds on all windows. There is also a larger buddy seat with a 27-litre fridge housed underneath. All of the vehicle and boom controls have been integrated into the cab’s original controls, for easy operation by existing Househam users, and avoiding the need to add additional switchgear.

CHAFER will show the new Hawkeye 2 version of the Raven Pulse Width Modulation nozzle control system. Designed to build on an already proven product, Hawkeye 2 offers increased nozzle output, variable PWM frequency and further improves the system’s reliability and spray consistency. These updates further increase the system’s suitability to liquid fertiliser applications, with larger nozzle outputs allowing

higher application rates and forward speeds. Turn compensation, individual nozzle control and the rapid rate changes the system offers make it beneficial for applying liquid fertilisers, giving a more consistent crop canopy with reduced lodging. Chafer has successfully fitted Raven PWM to a range of other brands of sprayer, stating the IsoBusready nature of the system makes this a relatively simple process.

SPRAYERS BATEMAN RB35 R.J. Bateman will show the latest RB35 self-propelled sprayer, which offers third generation PWM plus a new back frame designed to be lower, lighter and stronger.

The RB35 is available with variable geometry booms from 24-36 metres, with the option of Bateman’s own boom levelling system, and has a 4,000-litre tank capacity.

The nine Claydon Evolution models have working widths of three to six metres, incorporating nine, 13, 15 or 19 tines and most featuring a 1,910-litre hopper. The 3m 3MF and 4m 4MRF have a 2,700-litre tank split

A 5,000-litre pressurised tank is designed to meter and convey high application seed and fertiliser rates accurately at higher forward speeds. To work into a range of surface types, including cover crops, stubble, grassland and cultivated ground, the leading disc cuts through surface residue, ahead of a primary knife coulter which clears trash from the till and band places fertiliser below the seeding zone. The Mzuri iPass is available in widths from four to eight metres, with a choice of two row spacing options.

CULTIVATORS AND DRILLS FARMDROID FROM OPICO OPICO shows the fully autonomous, solar-powered FarmDroid Seed-NWeed robot, capable of precision drilling and weeding. The FarmDroid uses GPS to record exactly where it places each seed. Then on each subsequent weeding pass it has no need to identify what is a weed and what is not – it simply knows where the crop plants should be and works around them, hoe shares running between each row and blades slicing off anything between each crop plant, in the row.

FarmDroid is capable of working within 5mm of each seedling between the rows and 20mm in the row, eliminating the need for handrogueing problem weeds.

CULTIVATORS AND DRILLS AGRIWELD SUBSOILER AGRIWELD introduces the Multi-Till 5T, the company’s first trailed machine. Designed as a low disturbance subsoiler, it can be run with discs or legs only in work and with its Agri-Packer roller down or up, or complete with discs, legs and Agri-Packer roller in work.

Features include hydraulic depth control for the Agri-Packer roller, which rotates and brings in the depth wheels. Models range from three metres for smaller farms up to a 6m model and there is also the option to mount a seeder kit or liquid fertiliser applicator.

COUSINS of Emneth returns to LAMMA on the occasion of the company’s 70th birthday with a number of new products. The latest Cousins low disturbance soil loosener will be shown in three-metre rigid and 4m hydraulic folding mounted models, both fitted with the new Step Change low disturbance leg and new shark fin roller option.

The Step Change leg can also be retrofitted to all existing Cousins V-Form soil looseners, giving users more versatility.

Low disturbance The low disturbance soil loosener has a working depth of 20-30cm and the Step Change low disturbance leg can be changed to Micro-Wing, Quick Foot or Level Lift tines to suit the task in hand.

CULTIVATORS AND DRILLS VADERSTAD SPIRIT INLINE VADERSTAD introduces the Spirit 600C InLine combination high capacity seed drill, complimenting the Nordic and Fix fertiliser application systems already in the Spirit range. The InLine-version of the six-metre Spirit places a low fertiliser rate together with the seed in the seed furrow, providing the plant with easier nutrient uptake and shortening the time of emergence. Separated airflow ensures

fertiliser is distributed independently from the seed. The intensity of the airflow is easily adjusted, ensuring both the seeds and fertiliser are placed with optimal precision. Fertiliser is metered with the Fenix electric metering system, which is the same unit used for the seed metering. Split cells in the rotor and an angled exit from the metering unit prevent any pulsing and ensure all plants have the exact same access to fertiliser.

CULTIVATORS AND DRILLS STANDEN CUP PLANTER STANDEN Engineering will launch the SR 200 two-row cup planter. Designed to be easy to set up and accurate, the SR 200 features a new cup design which is capable of handling longer and larger seed potatoes. The Standen SR 200 can work at forward speeds of up to 10kph, with new stainless steel hood design with hydraulic pressure adjustment maintaining the desired ridge shape even at high forward speeds. Updated in-cab touch-screen controls operate the hydraulic space selector to give high levels of control over seed spacing and ensure accurate planting, says the company.

Optional equipment includes a hillside kit which includes a steering and vibrating seed return system, as well as an automatic depth control. Three-row and four-row offset models are in development for 2023.

HOW IMAGES AND DATA ARE CHANGING THE AGRI-FOOD SECTOR Being able to control processes more easily and design them more efficiently - these requirements also play an important role for agriculture and the food industry.

KRM will have a focus on hoeing and will show the Rotanet Control from Carre, a new addition to the range it distributes for the French manufacturer. The complete Rotanet range will be available through KRM, including the Rotanet Control and the recently introduced double-folding models with working widths of 8.1 metres to 10.3m.

Rotanet Control features the patented SPC module, which allows the pressure of the hoes to be precisely adjusted from the tractor cab, from 18-29kg. These models can be fitted with a new patented comb harrow option, integrated directly into the hoe to ensure the roots of the weeds are brought up to the surface and ensure they dry out.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR GRASS MACHINERY KRONE KRONE brings a raft of new machines to LAMMA, including the EasyCut B 1000 butterfly combination mower with features including hydraulic suspension, non-stop impact protection and the Krone SmartCut, SafeCut and DuoGrip systems. The EasyCut B 1000 butterfly combination offers a variable 9.28to 10-metre working width which is controlled hydraulically from the cab and on the move. The mower’s weight-balancing design ensures the machine’s centre of gravity is close to the rear axle, with transport height

less than 4m and a width of 3m. The entry-level four-rotor Swadro TC 1250 rake is capable of gathering material from 9.8-12.5m, while leaving a box-shaped swath 1.4-2.2m wide. Front rotors are equipped with hydraulic suspension, which can be altered quickly from the tractor. The rear rotors have mechanical spring suspension. Working height for the four rotors can be independently set by a crank handle on each rotor. The front rotors can be lifted out of work independently for awkwardly shaped fields.

GRASS MACHINERY EVERS HARROWS JC Machinery will show an expanded portfolio of products, including the Evers GPG range of spring tine

harrows. Combining a front levelling bar and two rows of tines, the harrows are designed to activate the soil by combing out debris, breaking up and dispersing lumps of soil and muck and stimulating new grass growth. Front- and rear-mounted versions are available in widths from 2.5-6.3 metres and in frontmounted configuration can be used in conjunction with a roller and seeder to improve pastures.

GRASS MACHINERY WEAVING MACHINERY WEAVING Machinery will show a new version of the Grassland Sublift, an implement eligible for the Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (Grassland Sward Lifter) and now available in three-leg and four-leg models, both with 2.8-metre working widths. The main updates are designed to make the Sublift more operatorfriendly, with an improved design which also features hydraulically adjustable front-cutting discs.

GRASS MACHINERY STRAUTMANN UPDATES EXACT-Cut is now standard on all Super Vitesse Forage Wagons. The number of blades and chop length are the same as previously, but the Exact-Cut system features new double-sided knives, a plastic damper and a return spring so knives reset automatically under reduced tension, meaning the knife bank stays cleaner and maintenance time is reduced. Smart IsoBus 570 is now available as an option to replace the FO 130 control terminal on all Giga Vitesse 01

models, for compatibility with any tractor IsoBus. The Giga 02 and Magnon forage wagons are fitted with the new IsoBus 570 control unit as standard.

The Roelama range is manufactured in the Netherlands and includes trailing shoe machines with working widths of 6.4-12 metres. Models can be specified with trailing shoes or cutting discs and have a vertical, three- or five-part hydraulic folding mechanism. The swinging arm for the drag hose has

been designed to prevent the hose from running underneath by angling it away from the machine at all times. On display will be the 12m Sleepflex unit, suitable for larger farms and contractors. It features an integrated lift, fully electrical hydraulic steering and two turning points on the swinging arm, which enables the operator to reverse without crossing the drag hose.

VREDO Dodewaard will show its latest slurry tankers, the addition of 15-metre and 18m Profi XL completing its slurry injector range. In addition to the standard folding and unfolding cylinders from the Profi series, the five-piece 15m and seven-piece 18m Profi XL injectors are equipped with an innovative folding and unfolding construction, said to provide extra stability and power transmission plus optimum

has highlighted that up to 30 per cent of soils in the UK are severely degraded and that 39 per cent of the cost attributed to compaction could be reduced by choosing the correct tyres and running machines at the optimum pressure for load. Continental suggests increased axle weights, caused by heavy implements and more powerful machines, can be offset by tyres which can spread this weight. To help operators, Continental has designed an app which calculates the correct pressure for load based on the type of tyre and the weight of the vehicle, including any implement being used. The Agriculture TireTech app can be operated using both iOS and Android devices. It is free to download and easy to use.

The Can-Am Traxter HD9 offers power and low-end torque through the new Rotax HD9 engine, which delivers 62hp and has up to 28cm ground clearance, 14-inch steel wheels and dynamic power steering for use on difficult terrain. MACHINERY AND TRACTOR There is nothing like the buzz of an indoor show and as LAMMA returns to the NEC to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Jane Carley offers a guide to the venue and how to get the most out of your visit.

Visiting LAMMA

AMMA 2022 takes place at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, on May 4-5, with nine halls of exhibits offering the latest in machinery, products and services for farmers. More than 600 exhibitors will be at LAMMA 2022, from multinational manufacturers to individual entrepreneurs. Visitors can take the opportunity to compare sprayers, dairy and livestock equipment, components and business management services in themed areas, while the wide range of machinery on show – from

tractors, combines and self-propelled applicators to specialist potato and vegetable equipment and precision farming devices to crop storage solutions – means there is something for every farming sector.

Meeting place For many companies in the engineering, component and technology sectors, this is the only major agricultural show they attend, so it is a unique meeting place for the manufacturer, trade and end user. There are also plenty of new and returning exhibitors this year. There are a number of new

features at the show. The LAMMA365 Dealer Zone will provide the opportunity to see a range of new and used machinery from dealers for leading brands and visitors can get information on the latest opportunities in foreign markets in the Export Advice Centre. The Safety Revolution Farm Safety Zone is back, providing vital information on how to make the farm a safer place, while visitors can learn about the latest technology all around the show in the new Farming 4.0 Trail. Catch up with the latest industry knowledge at the Fendt and Valtra Speaker Zone, covering everything from careers in agriculture to improving machine and systems connectivity. Visitors wishing to clock up BASIS, NRoSO or Dairy Pro CPD points will be able to do so on both days of the show. Maps will help visitors navigate around the halls, which all interlink – no need to walk back out into the elements to get to the next hall. Halls open at 8.30am, but the NEC Atrium will be open early, allowing visitors to meet up and get a coffee and breakfast. Catering comes from well-known brands such as Starbucks, Subway and Wetherspoons. Each hall also has its own catering and toilet facilities, and cloakrooms allow visitors to store coats or luggage, making for a more comfortable visit to the show.

LAMMA offers a great opportunity to inspect the latest machinery close up and all under cover.

The NEC offers free visitor WiFi and enhanced 4G/5G networks so it is easy to keep in touch with home or business contacts or to check social media; the LAMMA Show Twitter feed will keep you updated with all the news and new products from the show. Excellent transport links and access are among the main benefits of the venue’s location. Birmingham International train station is located within the NEC with direct services all day, with Birmingham New Street just a 15-minute journey away.

Bus It is also possible to access the NEC via bus or coach and there are numerous clearly marked taxi ranks. The closest airport is Birmingham International which is connected directly to the NEC by a free and fast air-rail link to Birmingham International Railway Station, located at the upper level of Terminal 1. The train runs every two minutes and takes 90 seconds and the NEC is clearly signposted from the station.

Meet the finalists for LAMMA 2 A diverse mix of projects and ideas were put forward for the 2022 Young Engineer Award. Toby Whatley gives an introduction to the five finalists. COLIN TAYLOR RUMEX SPRAY SYSTEM DEVELOPED as part of an MSc degree, the product has been developed to offer vision-based spot spraying of specific target weeds in a grassland environment. The system is designed to work with an existing boom sprayer and automatically controls the nozzles, switching to target specific plants through the use of cameras and some fairly sophisticated software which can recognise certain plants and identify their position to be sprayed. Colin’s design currently can recognises persistent weeds, such as docks, thistles and ragwort, and removes the requirement to spray the whole field area. The judges liked how the system has been developed using off-theshelf components but also the ability to target weeds within grass; sometimes called ‘green on green’ application, which is more advanced than other commercially available spot spraying systems.

Additionally, the level of complexity to develop the system to a working prototype showed great capabilities in both software and mechanical engineering.

Understanding A good understanding of chemical reduction achieved through using the product, which offered a financial and

significant environmental benefit compared to conventional application, but also the agronomic benefits of reducing chemical application to the grass and clover, offering potential improvements in growth for the grass and removing the challenge of targeting broadleaved weeds without destroying the clover within the pasture; a key species for diverse grazing.

STEPHEN DAVIES FEED MIXER BUCKET THE entry presented by Stephen showed some interesting potential and some well organised business plans. Currently developed as a desk-based prototype, the design process followed some valuable market research and a good understanding of the product’s place in his intended market. From a farming, sales and engineering background, Stephen has used these experiences to recognise the need for his product in the market. The design is based around a

shear grab which can also mix and deliver a mixed ration in quantities for smaller farmers,

or those with groups of stock on more remote sites. Stephen noted that although tractor- or telehandler-mounted mixer buckets currently exist, they are focused towards mixing maize or wholecrop silage not grass; a much more available winter fodder for his target customer. Typically, a mixed ration is delivered using a wagon and tractor, however he felt the costs and logistics of this put it outside the budget of many small farms. His design

is based around a conventional shear grab, so should remain fairly simple to build and operate with fewer moving parts.

Training The entry impressed the judges on the identification of market and a good handle on the required equipment and training required to make his design a commercial project, also the understanding of the value to the livestock his product could offer showed some good market knowledge.

A 2022’s Young Engineer Award HYWEL PHILLIPS TELEHANDLER ATTACHMENT TRAILER RECOGNISING a need to improve harvest logistics for productivity and safety, Hywel developed a range of modifications to a surplus combine header trailer to carry a range of attachments for use with a telehandler during harvest. The product uses a modified 12-metre header trailer which has been adapted with brackets and support structures to carry a grain pusher, a pair of different sized buckets and weigh beams as part of a mobile weigh bridge. This combination leaves the telehandler carriage free to transport the pallet forks and access basket. Although the design was based around a complete existing trailer chassis, Hywel showed some innovative ideas for how the attachments would be safely secured without the operator climbing onto the trailer with dedicated brackets

and carriers for each item, cut-tolength ratchet straps and the position of the attachments to keep the assembly balanced. Overall the design recognised the increase in productivity and safety both on-road and in the yard; the telehandler and its attachments no longer required the additional support of another tractor and trailer to transport

attachments, the machine would always be on-site with an access platform, making work at height much safer, and the implements were mechanically locked with dedicated brackets to the trailer, reducing the risk of straps slipping and the load becoming unstable.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR TOM LAND LANDWRX INTER-ROW DRILL DEVELOPED to address some of the soil health challenges with overwinter maize stubbles, Tom’s design of inter-row drill won praise from the judges in several areas. Initially for the recognition of the environmental impact of soil erosion but also the detail of development and testing, showing a good understanding of the agronomic challenges in establishing a companion crop with maize. The product requires a moderatesized tractor of 100-140hp to operate and achieves a good output of up to 5.5 hectares per hour. Unlike other inter-row seeders which blow the companion seed

onto the soil surface, the design uses three dedicated coulter and press wheels per row attached to a ground-following parallel linkage. This design establishes 25 rows of grass within eight rows of crop. As the crop is established using a coulter and press wheel, good seedto-soil contact should result improved establishment and growth. As the drill is designed to operate within established crops

of maize, high under-chassis clearance is offered to reduce any crop damage and maximise the working window for the machine.

The app is cloud based and operates with both web or smartphone users and offers wide range of functions for reporting tasks or sending jobs to operators. Jobs are created and sent to view on a smartphone and once they are complete, the report of the task is sent back ready for record creation or invoicing. The app should reduce the endof-month saga of rounding up job sheets from different operators to make sure all invoices arrive with the correct customer, for the correct value. The judges liked the opportunity to integrate the app with other financing software, which allowed the user to send complete invoices and track payments, alongside the

opportunity to offer a much more professional and timely service to customers; details of each job completed; specific information, such as bale quantity or weights, diesel used or any job specific photos, could be uploaded by the operator and included in the invoice pack. In regards to operator safety, some nice features included prompt for pre-work checks and live tracking should help to monitor exactly where machines are and what they are doing.

Farming 4.0 Trail anywhere safely and securely while on the go. Intrepid Minds, a research and development company with a rich history of engineering and system technology research, has developed a virtual fence product for keeping livestock in an imaginary boundary outlined via a remote display. The project involves using the company’s knowledge of radio-frequency identification and renewable energy solutions. Omnia, part of the Hutchinsons Group, combines the latest precision farming technologies with expert agronomy insight to help growers improve efficiency, productivity and profitability. This includes Omnia E-Seed, a variable rate drill conversion kit, which allows a standard land-metered drill to be used for variable rate seeding. SmartSola is a new software program from crop storage specialist Crop Systems which looks at The N-Tester can measure leaf nitrogen.
