Key dairy event returns to Telford

Now in its eighth year, the free-to-attend UK Dairy Day is returning to the International Centre in Telford on 14th September – including panel discussions on sustainability, as well as The Cattle Show, practical demonstrations and knowledge sharing zone.

Last year, UK Dairy Day was one of the rst events to take place following Covid-19 restrictions, attracting more than 7,000 visitors. It’s hoped visitor numbers will return to pre-Covid levels this year. There has so far been a record re-booking of trade stand space from existing as well as new exhibitors, who will feature across the extensive internal and external exhibition spaces, organisers say.

Exhibitors include feed manufacturers, animal health suppliers, vets, milk buyers, dairy and farm equipment suppliers – plus professional service providers and charities.

UK Dairy Day will again host the established National Holstein Show along with The National Ayrshire Show and The National Brown Swiss Show. Classes will run during the morning for Dairy Shorthorn, Guernsey and Jersey. Live streaming and social media coverage give an international marketing platform to display the UK’s top dairy cattle.

The dedicated Sharing Knowledge zone will be held on the rst oor, with four seminars and four industry panels covering sustainability within the dairy sector. Meanwhile the external areas will feature the ever-popular practical demonstrations.

Scarsdale Vets, from Derbyshire, will present their ‘Beneath the Black and White’ calf painting to help visualise and understand calf anatomy, health and welfare. Tim Carter also returns with practical demonstrations on foot trimming, blocking and knife sharpening. The quali ed team of independent foot trimmers demonstrate that the key to success is having the right tools for the job. They will also highlight The Cattle Hoof Care Standards Board, a selffunding non-pro t organisation aimed at improving the health, welfare and mobility of the national herd.

Internally by the Hall 3 cattle stalls will be the NBDC Breed Village where type classi cation and linear scoring demonstrations will be running for the Ayrshire, Jersey and Holstein breeds. A Virtual Cow demonstration will run on a TV screen, illustrating the linear scale for cow conformation traits, allowing for an improved understanding of dairy cow conformation and easy visualisation of anatomical di erences within each trait across the linear scale.

Meanwhile, a New Product competition will look for the most innovative or in uential new products on the market and shortlisted entries will be displayed in the concourse and judged during the morning of the event.

Fundraising will also be taking place during the event for the Brain Tumour Trust, in memory of Sue Cope, Holstein UK CEO and UKDD event director, who sadly passed away on 11th May 2022 after a short but courageous battle. Sue was instrumental in making UK Dairy Day happen each year since 2014.

UK Dairy Day is an accredited event with Dairy Pro for three CPD points and BASIS for two CPD points.

Diet feeder features ensure thorough mixing and consistency

A 22m3 capacity, twin auger, tandem axle diet feeder, complete with the optional feed elevator will be on the BvL stand at this year’s UK Dairy Day.

As on all BvL feeders the powerful mixing augers are made from high quality steel with Hardox leading edges and adjustable knives with mixing wedges in the mixing hopper, ensuring the ration is thoroughly mixed and mix quality consistently maintained.

BvL’s V-Mix range covers a wide range of trailed and self-propelled machines, available in single, twin and triple augers variants and in capacity from 3.5–46m3 .

A unique feature is the patented EDS (Exact Dosing System) discharge, designed to provide consistent, even forage discharge, deposited in a loose swath. Doors on the left- and right-hand side allow the mix to be deposited on both sides simultaneously. A wide range of additional discharge door options are available, as are discharge conveyors or elevators and new, highly powerful magnets to avoid metallic objects contaminating the ration.

Available as an option and suitable for retro t is the V-Connect mixer control, which allows the operator to easily monitor auger speed for improved repeatability and ration consistency.

Special coatings and hardened components for use with compact rations, or for more abrasive, higher dry matter rations, make this option particularly suited for beef cattle rations and large dairy herds. FG
