®
TMR Tracker Precision Feed Management Solutions TMR Tracker is a full-featured Windows® based feed management system. TMR Tracker also offers operators additional management tools including: Operator control, pen review, online feed data exchange with nutritionists, ingredient tracking and numerous reports. TMR Tracker is an indispensable management tool for forward thinking operations!
Simply enter your feed ingredients, rations, pens or groups and mixer information in your TMR Tracker software. RF DataLink™ (wireless) or USB Drive (memory device) is used to transfer feeding instructions to the indicator on the TMR mixer. The indicator displays the ingredients to be loaded, their weight, as well as the corresponding pen information. During feeding, the actual weights of loaded ingredients and fed ration are saved and returned via DataLink™ or USB Drive. TMR Tracker software generates various detailed reports, tables and graphs.

SUCCESSFUL OPERATION WALLING’S “Absolutely brilliant,” is how Rebecca Walling describes the new Abbey Vertical Feeder (VF) 2850 mixer wagon from Farmgard she and husband Len purchased for their size-able Waikato dairy farm. “We feed out 10 tonne a day, twice a day so need a good, reliable machine that is going to last. Our old mixer wagon wasn’t able to handle a 10 tonne payload when you added molasses so that is why we started looking at new machines. We chose the Abbey because it seemed to be the strongest on the market and have been delighted with its performance.” The Wallings’s new VF2850 is the largest in the Abbey range with a 28 cubic metre capacity. Rebecca says it consistently delivers a 10 tonne payload, which is what they were after for their 900 cow farm at Wharepuhunga just south of Te Awamutu, where they milk twice-a-day, every day of the year.

“Our old machine was supposed to produce a 10 tonne payload but this was totally dependent on the sort of product you put in. The Abbey can reach the 10 tonne payload with any feed combination.” Abbey’s twin vertical feeder range is designed to handle the toughest conditions, and is constructed using the highest grades of materials. The machines have the ability to handle precision chop silage, large round or square bales of silage, hay, straw and roots. Additional feed products such as maize and meal can be added at any stage of the mixing process. The Walling’s mix mainly maize silage, grass silage, palm kernel and molasses in their new workhorse, but also add straw, minerals, and even kiwifruit, apples and bread when available. “We mix this up twice a day and feed on the feed pad and into feed troughs all year round. It’s a fairly basic diet but it works for our system and is cost effective.” The machine’s specially shaped mixing auger and tub ensures the perfect blend of ingredients.
auger and tub ensures the perfect blend of ingredients. Rebecca says Abbey’s Digi-Star weighing system allows them to achieve consistency of the feed ration and lets them know “exactly what’s going on”. The mixed feed is then evenly discharged, with the feed flow rate controlled by a hydraulically operated discharge door. The VF2850 also comes with a rear self-steering axle, allowing it to turn it in a “very tight circle” without having to manoeuvre and back around which the Walling’s had to do with their previous machine. They purchased the vertical feeder from Waikato Tractors, which are Farmgard’s local dealer for the Abbey product that it imports from Tipperary, Ireland. “We’ve been dealing with Waikato Tractors for over 20 years and buy most of our machinery off them. We were also impressed by the good reputation Farmgard has in the market. A machine is only as good as the backup service from your suppliers, and we certainly get that from these two companies.” In addition to their farming operation, Rebecca and Len run Walling Contractors that provides a full range of agricultural contracting services to Waikato farmers. “We know machinery pretty well and the importance of it doing the job efficiently and reliably.” Abbey makes a range of other products including slurry tankers and muck spreaders. “We’ve had an Abbey slurry tanker for the last couple of years and it’s brilliant as well. It’s a good brand.” With the VF2850 providing good value for money, excellent performance, and most of all, happy cows, Rebecca says the couple have “no regrets” about investing in their Abbey machine. “It’s doing the job 110 percent better than our old machine. We’re just about to convert our second farm, and at this stage I can see no reason for us not to buy another Abbey mixer.” Rebecca Walling

SUCCESSFUL OPERATION RICHARD WESTLAKE Northland dairy farmer Richard Westlake says his Abbey mixer wagon is a “crucial” part of his production system. “I don’t know how we’d do without one now.” He purchased the single axle Abbey Vertical Feeder (VF) 1850 with two optional side elevators around 18 months ago to service Mayflower Farms, a family-owned 600 cow town supply dairy farm at Maungaturoto. “We calve three times a year and supply local fresh milk year-round, so the wagon is in use 365 days a year. It is a great machine which evenly mixes whatever we put in, and feeds consistently over the whole bin. We know the first cow on the feed pad will get exactly the same amount of each material in the feed ration as the heifer down the other end.” Richard believes feeding from the mixer wagon has also led to strong production gains. “We’ve noticed a big difference in our milking, with the small cows producing the same amount as the larger cows. Across the board we’ve seen a 60 kg milk solids per-cow-per-year increase in production, which goes a long way to paying back our investment in the machine.” It was after deciding to feed minerals and molasses to his cows that Richard started looking at mixer wagons, through machinery firm Te Hana Tractors and importers Farmgard. “I went for the Abbey because I’d used a lot of the brand’s gear when I was working as a contractor in the UK and still had friends over there who recommended it. farmgard.co.nz

gear when I was working as a contractor in the UK and still had friends over there who recommended it. Working with Te Hana Tractors and Farmgard made it a quick and simple process. They are easy to deal with and looked after everything we wanted.” Richard opted for electronic hydraulic controls and side discharge elevators on both sides of his 18 cubic metre capacity mixer wagon, to give him more feeding options. “The variable speed on the belts means we can feed out at different speeds on each side of the wagon for different stock whether they’re on the feed pad or calving pad. Having two elevators also gives us a bit of security. If we happen to whack one of them off on a fence post, we’ve always got the other one.” Around five tonne of feed is mixed and fed from the wagon each day – generally a large round bale of hay, combined with 3 tonnes of maize silage, 1.2 tonne of palm kernel and 350 kg molasses, plus minerals. “The Digi-Star weighing system on the Abbey is easy to use and works in tandem with the loader scales so we know exactly what is going into the feed ration.” Richard usually tows the mixer wagon behind his 115 hp tractor but says his 95 hp tractor also handles it with ease, even with a full load of maize. “I prefer to tow it with the tractor with the two speed gearbox, just in case I need to drop it into the low gearbox if it stalls with a full load.” He has applied this cautious approach to the machine’s controls with a backup redundant system consisting of three sets of hoses ready to plug into the tractor should there be an issue with the electronic hydraulic controls. “We rely on the machine to deliver every day so it’s good to have every eventuality covered.” In 18 months, the machine has required little servicing, apart from “a bit of oil and grease”. “Overall it’s a strong, reliable and really easy wagon to use, with a simple weighing system, and very good, consistent mixing and feeding out. I would definitely recommend the Abbey mixer wagon to other farmers. It is a smart investment.” Richard Westlake
