TEST
The large wheels make the machine easy to pull
his year it has been more crucial than ever to keep the boys busy, although Irish workers here for the harvest season will think this weather is pretty normal. Abbey is one of Ireland’s largest producers of agricultural equipment. Founded in 1947 by the Cavanagh family, the company still remains within the family. As times change, so does the need for modern manufacturing facilities and with 10,000m² of factory buildings where they produce slurry and manure handling equipment, toppers and diet feeders (to name a few), the Irish are not being left behind the pack.
T
The Test I met up with James Green, who owns and runs Campbell & Green Contracting in Hawera. The company provides farmers in South Taranaki with a wide-range of services; one of which is effluent spreading, with its Abbey 2500R slurry tanker. The Abbey is in its second season in the fleet and has more than proved its worth. The recessed single-axle and compact design of the machine make it great for a variety of jobs from sucking out sink holes and blocked culvets to fully fledged one-million-litre slurry jobs. The Abbey vacuum tanker line-up ranges in capacity from 4000 to 20,000 litres (although labelled in gallons) which can be fitted with a splash plate, trailing hose, trailing shoe, cereal applicator and injector. However, today I will just focus on the recessed axle range, which is where the ‘R’ in the 2500R test tanker fits into the line up.
Machine Features Recessed axle Key features of the five-model recessed tanker range include the large 30.5R32 tyres. These provide three major benefits: The first is reduced ground compaction; secondly they are easy to tow yet keep weight on the rear of the tractor to aid traction; and thirdly, the machine’s centre of gravity is kept low, which makes it very stable on hills. The low centre of gravity is achieved using folded chassis construction, with the large axle integrated into the chassis. This considerably reduces the overall height while significantly increasing strength. Pump The full range of Abbey tankers are equipped with Battioni pumps. A wide-angle PTO shaft provides the drive. With an auto filling arm, the change-over happens from the single hydraulic port. For pump protection, pressure relief valves are standard on all pumps, with additional protection from Abbey’s patented double trap system; which allows maximum pump protection while maintaining maximum filling capacity. The inverted splash plate easily covers 12 metres in one pass

Drawbar suspension Like most things in life, if you have had it in the past, doing without it is something you do not want to entertain. For tractor operators it’s the 50km/hr road speed and front and cab suspension. Trailing implements are no different, and once you have had drawbar suspension, you won’t want to go back. Most work with a single leaf spring. However the Abbey set-up uses three, which mEx depending on the weight inside the tanker and levels out the bumps accordingly. Auto lLL system This is very similar to the drawbar suspension option, as in once you have it you will never want to be without it. Green has gone one step further and opted for the turbo lll option as well. First the lLLIng arm can be either side mounted or as a centremounted articulated arm. The six-inch turbo lLler on Green’s tank means it lLLS in three minutes or less (depending on the slurry thickness). It is also available in the eightinch version. Either way you look at it, it will cut llling times by up to a third. The llling pod is well thought out in the fact it allows both pitch and height adjustment to accommodate the wide variety of pond sizes. Unfortunately on the mipside it doesn’t lT on the tanker for transport in a way that is road legal, so must be carried around separately which to be honest, is a bit of a faff. Discharge The second major selling point of the Abbey tanker for Green was the ‘low trajectory splash plate’, which essentially means it is upside-down. I also was impressed at the spread width, given how low the efmuent was discharged from the tanker. There are multiple BENElTS for this, the lRSt being that the wind doesn’t affect the spray and get the tanker

Additionally (and I can’t qUAntify this in terms of scientilc evidence), bUt SURely the amOUnt of nitrogen lost from this type of system is lower than a standard splash plate. Standard splash plate losses are said to be between 40-80 percent of the nitrogen content (depending on conditions and SLURRy concentrate) lost into the atmosphere, compared to 20 percent with a dribble bar, given this is directed towards the gROUNd.
Collared dished ends The Collared dish ends on the Abbey tankers are pUrely for added strength. The ends are pressed into the main tank cylinder with a 45mm collar overlap, which along with internal BAFmE plates, both anti implosion and explosion valves make the thing pretty mUch bUllet-proof.

The rear inverted splash plate I woULd sUspect is the best discharge option, withoUt having to add additional weight and cost in either a dribble bar or direct injection rear implement, to rEDUce nitrogen losses. “ABSOLUTELY RAPT” Taranaki agricultural contractor James Green is “absolutely rapt” with the Abbey 2500R Slurry Tanker that is about to complete its first full season in his fleet. “The quality is right up there. It is a strong, well-built machine and is extremely reliable. This is the first year I have run it for a whole season, and I haven’t had to do a thing to it.” James’ company Campbell and Green Contracting provides a full range of agricultural services in the Taranaki region. He says effluent management is a growing part of the business given the need for dairy farmers to meet tightening regulations around effluent storage and disposal. “I got into effluent spreading around three years ago, but hired a tanker in the first year to make sure it was something I wanted to continue with. Now it’s a big part of the business. We do a lot of pond emptying and effluent spreading onto pasture paddocks, and are particularly busy around cropping time, spreading slurry onto cultivated paddocks when the maize and turnips are going in.” At the beginning of 2013 James started “shopping around” for a new slurry tanker, and settled on the Abbey after researching numerous makes and models. “A friend of mine works at Power Farming Taranaki, and he recommended I take a look at the Abbey brand. After reading some information I became highly interested, so he organised a meeting with the guys at Farmgard to discuss the best options for my operation.” After discussing the finer points of the Abbey Recess Tanker range with Farmgard, James decided on the single axle 2500R, with 11,350 litre capacity, six inch autofill and six inch turbofill. “I was a bit unsure at the start about having a big wheeled machine with recessed axle but now I’m extremely happy with it.” James had seriously considered buying a 10,000 litre tandem axle machine from another brand before deciding on the Abbey, but says a recent “big job”, where his Abbey worked alongside two of these other machines in wet conditions, proved he made the right decision. “The double axle on these machines was like a big boat anchor and they seemed to spend more time getting stuck and having to be pulled out by a tractor and chain than they did working. We were able to drive straight in behind with the Abbey, load up and drive back out under our own steam, all day.” James says the Abbey’s ability to work under any conditions is a big plus. “It doesn’t make a mess in wet ground and is extremely stable on the hills. The Abbey tanker also travels well on the roads whether it is full or empty and doesn’t bounce around.” A filling speed of just over three minutes depending on the thickness of the slurry is another positive that makes the process, “faster, easier and more cost effective for the client”. The Abbey Recess Tanker Range comes in five different options from 7,000 up to 13,500 litres. Along with the standard Abbey specifications in the barrel construction, the recess range has some class-leading qualities, including full length chassis construction; a weightsensing sprung drawbar, anti-movement internal baffles, and more. James says he would have no hesitation recommending a machine from the Abbey Recess Slurry Tanker range to other contractors or farmers. “I’m rapt with it and with the big increase in effluent work definitely plan to buy another one in the next couple of years, hopefully sooner.” James Green

ABBEY HARDLY LEAVES ANY MARKS Surging growth in dairy effluent handling prompted Carterton contractors Shane and Sonya Gray to “take a bit of a gamble” and buy an Abbey slurry tanker from Farmgard Equipment. Four generations of his family have been contracting in Wairarapa. “But if I was starting now I don’t think I’d bother. The legislation facing us now is mind boggling.” Bureaucracy gone mad, he says. New rules constantly on road travel with implements, and on drivers and staff. “Not that contractors have a bad safety record; we’ve been responsible and safe. But these new rules are costs to be passed on to our farmer clients.” Gray bought his Irish-made Abbey slurry tanker (model 2250R, capacity 10,000L) from Wairarapa Machinery Services, Masterton. It has an auto fill which goes next to the pond with a suction hose going into the liquid. The hydraulic arm is lowered and the tank begins filling. A double trap prevents over-filling. Two relief valves prevent the tank over-pressurising during emptying. “I like to have the pond stirred for at least two hours so the material flows better and it only takes about five minutes to fill the tank.” An innovation by Abbey is an inverted splash plate which, during emptying reduces spray drift. The material is evenly spread 8m from the tanker. Gray likes the unit’s big flotation tyres. They make the full tank easier to tow and “hardly leave any marks.” He tows the tanker with a JD 160hp tractor. The axle is placed for lowest centre of gravity and the draw bar is sprung to minimise stress on the tractor. Their business is based as a separate entity on their dairy farm from where they work up to 30km north to Masterton and to Cape Palliser 65km to the south. They do silage, baleage, straw and hay with two self-propelled Claas harvesters doing 3000ha annually. For the baleage, straw and hay they have two Welger round balers and two New Holland for baling medium squares, processing about 30,000 bales a season. The region’s many lifestyle blocks demand a lot of hay – 20,000 conventional bales per season. Gray does a full cultivation, plough, disc and drill service for 400ha in the spring and the same in the autumn. He also does 200ha of direct drilling. “We have 12 John Deere and two Claas tractors a JCB loader and five trucks with five permanent staff with numbers rising to about 20 as needed.” The area is not a large in dairying (40% milk cows) but 95% of his customers are dairy farmers.
