ppliances are so-called big-ticket items, expensive purchases expected to last a long time. Because they are such a major investment, it’s wise to carefully consider which store you choose to purchase them at. You might be lulled into a store after seeing advertisements and sales featuring new appliances with all the latest features and technology. Or you may just need to replace an aging appliance on its last legs. Either way, it’s smart to figure out what you really need, how much you can afford and which stores offer the best quality and deals. Chances are you’ve already done some research or quizzed friends or family about their own experiences with various appliances, but shopping for one can be daunting. But it can also

business review sites. Don’t dismiss negative reviews, but keep in mind that customers who have good experiences are less likely to crow on the internet. Many stores also have review sections for customers to leave comments, reviews and ratings for the services and the products they sell, which can give you some insight into the business and their products.
First, do an internet search for appliance stores in your area. Local stores are easier to work with and you will likely be able to get your appliance much quicker than if you had to go out of the area or order it. If your refrigerator has stopped working, this is especially important. Many appliance stores also offer free delivery in the local area. You can get a good idea of the services offered by various companies via
For most of us, getting a good deal is probably a top concern when shopping for appliances. Check your local newspaper and your mailbox for circulars announcing the latest, greatest deals on appliances in your area. Many stores will use price-matching to stay competitive. Not all stores have policies on price-matching, so be sure to ask first.
ADVERTISEMENTS
As always, conduct research on the appliance you need to make sure you are spending money wisely. Not all appliances are the same; just because one manufacturer was excellent two decades ago doesn’t mean the quality will be the same now.
STORE POLICIES Review the store’s policies about warranties and repairs. If the appliance comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, you might not need an additional warranty from the store. Consider these questions when you’re looking for an appliance store: Do they have a delivery window, warranty options, repair services and range of products? Answer these questions, and know that you’ll purchase appliances with confidence.

harmacies play a larger role in health care in the United States than ever before, offering not just easy access to prescriptions but mini markets selling cosmetics, toiletries, home goods, food and other frequently used supplies. The big chains — Walgreens and CVS — now offer 24-hour, drive-thru pharmacies and an array of heath care services, such as vaccinations and minor medical emergency treatment. And multiple locations mean you’ll always be able to pick up your medicine in a pinch while traveling for business or pleasure, All that convenience can come with trade-offs, though. Surveys indicate independent pharmacies get top marks for service, speed, accuracy and providing information. That’s largely due to the

fact that most of their revenue comes from prescription sales. Whether you’re looking to try a chain pharmacy or trying to locate a good independent pharmacy, here are some things you may want to think about.
LOCATION
AVAILABILITY
A convenient location will make filling prescriptions and purchasing medical products much easier. If you can find a store near your home, work or school, it will save you plenty of time. It is very useful to find a pharmacy that is minutes away, in case you need help quickly.
A pharmacy’s hours of operation are a top factor for most people. Limited business hours are not helpful when you are dealing with an illness. Look for a business with convenient hours. Some cities even have all-night pharmacies that will fill your prescriptions in a hurry. Usually, pharmacies that are tied to a corporate chain will stay open late. Smaller, locally owned pharmacies may be open during limited hours, but they tend to provide personalized service.
Does the pharmacy accept your prescription drug plan? Not every pharmacy will accept every insurance policy. Call ahead to inquire about the types of insurance they accept. Paying out of pocket will likely be a huge, unnecessary burden. If you have little to no coverage for your prescriptions, contact pharmacies to ask about prescription discounts. Most pharmacies have generic ver-

sions of medications, some of which may be available to you. Between discounts and generic drugs, you could save lots. Seniors on Medicare should pay close attention when choosing a pharmacy. Ask locations in your area if they accept your Medicare Part D plan. There are many options available on these plans. It is important that the pharmacy you select is willing to work with your plan to cover the medications you need.
SERVICE Customer service is another factor when choosing a pharmacy. Do the pharmacist and staff remember your name? Are they happy to answer questions? Do you trust them? Finding a pharmacy staff that is informative and friendly will make it easier for you to take your medication.

ccording to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other brain changes serious enough to interfere with daily functioning. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80% of all dementia cases. While it is mostly associated with older people, Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. There are over 100 other types of dementias, or neurocognitive disorders which cause brain changes. Learning that you or a loved one has Alzheimer’s or dementia is a life changing experience, so you’ll want to learn all that you can and choose the right care for your situation. The first step is choosing the right care provider who is knowledgeable about dementia, can help determine the care needs of the person with dementia, and who is available to listen. When
Choose Alzheimer’s Care
possible, seek help early and involve the person with dementia in care decisions. Deciding how much care a person needs depends on such factors as how independent he or she is; can they still live alone or do they need assistance with basic care needs. A person with dementia may still live independently early on, but as the disease progresses, supervision will be needed and care needs become more intensive. The care provider should conduct a cognitive evaluation to determine where your loved one falls in the dementia spectrum — beginning, middle or end stage.
LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE Brain changes also impact a person’s ability to communicate with others, particularly in areas of reasoning, language comprehension and speech. Care partners can help by learning about brain changes, how to recognize changes
in their loved one and how to support them with positive approaches, such as not correcting them or saying ‘don’t you remember.’ While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, and current medications for memory approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration can help slow progression of some symptoms, learning communication approaches is vital to supporting and maintaining a person’s remaining abilities. Quality of life is important to everyone, whether you have dementia or not and includes aspects of well-being including freedom of choice, independence, purpose and emotional connection.
TREATMENT FACILITY When care needs increase, it may be necessary to seek a care community. The best care facilities dedicated to treating Alzheimer’s and dementia also provide training for their care staff on
communication and brain changes associated with dementia. The care they give should fit the personal needs of the individual. When choosing a residential facility, tour the entire center. Ask to see a model resident room and if permitted, ask to speak to some residents or family members. How is the living environment at the facility? Are the rooms clean and comfortable? Are there quiet areas to relax? Does the center have group activities, special outings, open visitation, family programs and other services? Are the residents engaged during activities or passive? Active people stay healthier longer. Residents need to feel comfortable and safe but also need to have purpose. The best facilities provide a safe place where your loved one can explore the environment and the outdoors and provides a homelike community where each person is treated with dignity and respect.
Sell your home in a price-sensitive market . . . o t w Ho I HOW TO GUIDE 2022
f you’re considering selling your home in the white-hot post-pandemic real estate market, chances are you’re in a position of great control. Existing home inventories are low and new construction is struggling to keep up with demand, so sellers may be able to command prices well above market value. But selling isn’t just a financial proposition. Deciding when to put your home on the market is driven by many factors that do not always include market considerations. Maybe you need to move for a new job or have limited time to make a deal on your dream home. Here are a few pointers form making the sale in a price-sensitive market:
BANG FOR THE BUCK When preparing your home to sell, do not overspend on renovations. Keep renovations simple. If your
kitchen seems outdated, remodeling it might have made sense years ago. The marketplace would’ve allowed you to get your money back — and maybe even make a profit. Most experts agree that you should simply add a fresh coat of paint to update the room. It will keep your costs down and make it easier to price your home competitively. A minor home makeover will not break the bank. Painting a room, decluttering the interior, neatly trimming the lawn and putting fresh mulch in the flower beds can make a big difference. Of course, every community is different. When in doubt, consult your real estate agent for advice on where to best spend your money to get the most value out of your home.
PRICE IT RIGHT The right asking price is another essential step toward selling your home.
It is a big mistake to assume that you should ask for a high price in the beginning. Your home will get the most interest in the first few weeks it’s on the market. When people see your home first appear in the listings, or neighbors see the “for sale” sign in your yard, that’s when people will be talking about your home. Starting with a sales price that’s too high — even slightly so — will discourage potential buyers. They might think you are asking too much for your home. It is better to start with a realistic, fair market price. It is the best way to make a quick sale.
ONLINE VIEWS Clever sellers are starting to price their homes in a way that will get the most views online. For example, if you are thinking of asking $255,000, that might put it out
5
of range for people who see “up to $250,000” as a search option on a website or mobile app. When pricing your home, look for common categories in real estate search engines. Think of a price that will cause your house to come up the most in search results.
LISTEN CLOSELY Perhaps the most important step of all is finding a great real estate agent. These professionals are your most valuable tool when selling your home. The best agents will have knowledge and expertise about the local market and how to get your home sold for a great price. Listen closely to their advice and follow it precisely. After all, in a price-sensitive market, an experienced real estate agent’s suggestions can be worth more than gold.

veryone seems to know someone who’s good at auto repair. A relative, friend or neighbor who has experience fixing cars. For most simple fixes, that might work. But often the complexity of modern vehicles surpasses even the knowledge of the best backyard mechanics. That’s when owners begin the search for an auto repair shop. Some new car owners may naturally gravitate toward their dealers to follow scheduled maintenance to keep their vehicle in top shape. Older cars will likely need more attention. That’s why it pays to develop a relationship with a qualified, reliable and professional auto repair shop. Talented, honest mechanics can extend the life of your car and help you avoid costly repairs. And if the unexpected occurs — an accident or a major
Choose a auto repair shop
malfunction — that relationship can be the difference between hundreds and thousands of dollars. Even if your car is new, at some point it will need tires, oil changes or even a new engine. If you have a relationship with a good auto repair shop, you won’t sweat it when these things come up. If you haven’t had a regular mechanic is recent years, now is the time to find one. Here are a few points to consider: • Less than 40% of new customers in auto shops are walk-ins. That means word of mouth is still king in the industry. Find a shop that gets rave reviews from family and friends, and you’ll be in good hands. • If you travel often, consider a shop that offers a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, particularly in older cars. • Ask about the shop’s range of ser-
vices. They will need the latest technology to diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Does the shop provide a loaner, rental car or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • Look around the shop. Is the equipment in good condition? Is it clean, well-lit and organized? These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism. • Look for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Shops may use remade or generic brands which your insurance policy may not cover, so be sure to check. • Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National
Institute for Automotive Services or Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90% or higher and the ability to adequately perform the services advertised. • Compare the services and fees of each shop in the area to find out the average price ranges. Don’t pick a shop based on cost; poor repair work will mean higher costs in the long run. You’ll also want to ask about the shop’s warranty policy. Imagine spending hundreds on a repair only to learn the work isn’t guaranteed. Once you have found a shop you trust, establish a good working relationship and try to use the shop for all of your automotive needs. Your mechanic will come to know you as a dependable customer and always be sure to provide you the highest level of service.

HOW TO GUIDE 2022
Choose a feed store
f you have a farm with lots of animals — or even a smaller spread with fewer animals or a specific type of animal — a good feed store is prepared to meet all your needs with a selection of nutritious, quality feed. Providing your livestock with quality food is essential to their health and wellbeing, so feed stores will typically offer a variety of brands approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure feed is safe. Additionally, feed stores are required to prevent mold from building up so that animals don’t consume contaminated feed. Here are some things to look for when selecting a quality feed store.
QUALITY Just like humans, animal health is directly impacted by the quality of food they ingest. While most feed stores will carry a range of products at different price points, it’s a good idea to select the best food you can afford for your pets or livestock. All feed products contain nutrients with a mixture of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, proteins and minerals, and they also contain filler such as cheap grains and animal byproducts. The best feed brands have the right nutritional mix to grow strong, healthy animals, with more beneficial substances and less filler. When you buy better quality food, your pets and livestock will have fewer allergic reactions, be able to digest their food better and will ultimately live healthier lives.
KNOWLEDGE Look for a feed store that offers not only quality brands, but also knowledgeable expertise to help you pick the right product for your animals’ needs. The best stores are run by people with years of first-hand experience raising pets and livestock. They’ll know which
products are the best fit for your goals, whether it’s bulking up your cattle, raising healthy horses, or growing a shiny coat for show dogs.
SERVICE Like any retail operation, service can vary widely between different feed stores. You’ll want to find a store that puts their customers’ needs first, taking the time to get to know you and going the extra mile to make sure you’re satisfied. Some things you may notice: • Serving the community: Some feed stores are more like a central meeting place for the community. They may have bulletin boards for farmers and ranchers to exchange information, and they’ll sponsor local events or youth sports teams. • Staff recommendations: A good feed store will have employees who know enough about their products to offer informed, meaningful advice. • Special orders and mail orders: If the feed store doesn’t have the product you need in stock, they should be able to place a special order for you. • Delivery: Some feed stores may offer a delivery service to their customers.
SELECTION Beyond offering feed products, the best stores will have other products that help with agriculture. From fencing to seed, tractors to gardening supplies, many feed stores offer a wide range of other products. The best feed stores can be a one-stop shop for all your farming and ranching supplies. If they don’t have it in stock, they can help you order it, offering service with a smile for no extra charge. If you find a store with top-quality feed products, a knowledgeable and experienced staff, and service and selection that go above and beyond the basics, you’ll know you’ve found a great place to do business.

P
urchasing heavy-duty farm equipment is heavy-duty decision. Tractors and other machinery are among the most expensive purchases farmers and ranchers make, so you want to make sure you’re getting the highest quality bang for your buck. You want to get a good deal, but remember that cheaper isn’t always better. After all, you’re making an investment in a valuable asset you’ll be using around the farm for decades to come. Here are a few keys to consider.
right tractor to fit the job you’re doing. The brand’s reputation should factor into your decision. Look for online reviews and talk to farmers you respect about the brands they use. Also, visiting a retail location and talking to knowledgeable salespeople will also help you narrow down your choices. Keep in mind that while there are plenty of low-end, affordable tractors out there, few have a reputation for durability over the long haul.
DURABILITY
Tractors and farm equipment come in a wide range of capabilities and price points, from affordable models designed for home use to multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-art automated machines. In between those extremes, you’ll find a

vast mixture of features and capability. You can select the right model by asking yourself how you’ll use the equipment. The size of your farm is important, of course. Bigger farms need larger, more capable equipment to operate at the highest level of efficiency. Remember, too, that when you buy a tractor, you’re committing yourself to a whole line of equipment. Most of today’s tractors are designed as flexible platforms that can be used for all kinds of jobs, so check on the accessories and tools that are available with each model.
WARRANTY Every manufacturer of farm equipment says they’re built to last, but how many of them back up their claims with a solid warranty? The warranty term and coverage can be one of the most
critical considerations you weigh as a buyer. Not only will a great warranty help you if your equipment has a malfunction down the road. It’s also a sign of how much faith the manufacturer has in their products. Strong warranty coverage usually corresponds with products that are designed with toughness and durability in mind.
DEALER Finally, finding a good farm equipment dealer is an essential part of the shopping process. Look for an experienced retailer with a long track record of happy customers. The best ones will have lots of positive references in the local farming community, so just ask around for which farm stores people in your area trust.

onfronting one’s own mortality can be a sobering thought. But like other end-of-life planning, selecting a final resting place can bring you peace of mind. Choosing a spot, whether it’s part of traditional family plot in a cemetery, a special spot that brings you joy, or more permanent place like a mausoleum, finding a final resting place should be given serious, thoughtful consideration. Your final resting place is also designed to keep your memory alive, so planning your own funeral and choosing a resting place with the your finances and wishes in mind is one of the most compassionate and selfless acts you can make and can preserve your legacy for years to come. So whether you’re pre-planning for yourself or helping a family member with choices, end-of-life decisions will

have a lasting impact. Here are some things to consider when choosing a final resting place.
CEMETERY Choosing a resting place is similar to buying real estate. Location will play a large part in choosing a cemetery plot or mausoleum. Your final resting place should have special meaning for you and your loved ones. Ideally, it should be neat, clean and have long-term arrangements for taking care of the grounds. A convenient location is preferable, so loved ones can pay their respects easily and conveniently. Much of this decision will be based on personal preference. It might be a small, quiet country location or a plot in the middle of a bustling city. There are plenty of options available, depending
on your wishes. The property manager should have a stellar reputation and a lengthy track record of being professional. It is important that they make you feel comfortable and at peace with your decisions. Look for a cemetery that will be run in perpetuity. It should have stable management now and detailed plans for ongoing maintenance through decades to come. Do not be afraid to ask questions about the company’s history and plans for the future.
HEADSTONES Deciding on the right headstone is another way to leave a legacy. The monument or headstone can say a lot about the deceased’s life. You can choose a simple, straightforward stone or an elaborate stone with a custom design. You can also leave a message

for descendants. This headstone will be around for a very long time, and it can inform people about your life. So you might want something more unique. Monuments can also reflect the personality and interests of the person they are honoring. Many companies offer a variety of designs and layouts for people who want a special headstone. They have symbols and messages that can honor religious beliefs, clubs, honors or careers. These elements will add personality to your headstone. These companies are happy to cater to your request. They might also make recommendations. A final resting place will honor a legacy for many years to come. The decisions you make will leave a meaningful impression, so take the time to choose wisely.

hoosing a skilled nursing facility is among the most important decisions you’ll make in the long-term care of a love one. You’re entrusting the staff with their health and well-being and to make decisions about emergency needs. These facilities were once just known as nursing homes. But much has changed in the industry. Along with round-theclock care and supervision, patients and clients at these facilities can receive rehabilitation services, therapy and assistance with daily activities. Some people stay for a short time after being in the hospital. After they recover, they go home. However, most residents live there permanently because they have ongoing physical or mental conditions that require constant care and supervision. A skilled nursing facility is usually
much more skilled and regulated than an assisted living facility. That’s because the staff at skilled nursing facilities provide and administer prescription medications. Assisted living facility staff does not usually have the same authorization. If you’re searching for a skilled nursing facility for a loved one you have hundreds of options to pick from. The problem is, it can be difficult to sort through all of your options. Your best choices are facilities that have high scores from state agencies such as the nursing-home regulatory agency or department of health. The nursing staff in these facilities are required to complete a formal certification process. As a result, Your loved one will need reassurance that he or she will be safe and well taken care of by a highly skilled nursing staff.
Select a facility close to your loved one’s family and friends. It should be easy to see your loved one. Frequent visits will help ease the transition from independent living to a skilled nursing environment. You can form an accurate opinion by visiting several facilities. Reputable centers will have no problems with scheduling interviews with staff or giving tours of the living areas and grounds. If a facility doesn’t allow you to see these areas or have a meeting with the director, it should be dropped from your list. Cleanliness, cheerful decor and happy residents neatly dressed are symbols of a quality facility. Speak to current residents and their families to get a good assessment of the facility. Family members will likely provide the most unbiased and unvarnished opinion of the facility.
Most high-quality skilled nursing facilities are significant investments. They provide a much higher level of care and so they cost more. Talk with an attorney who specializes in nursing facility cases for advice on cost, as well as quality of care. The decision to put your loved one in a particular facility is not permanent. If your family member is not receiving good care or shows signs of abuse, you have the right to remove him or her. Frequent visits are important so you can monitor the health and well-being of your loved one. See him or her at different times of the day to verify the level of care. Take all the time you need when searching for a skilled nursing facility. Putting a loved one in a facility can be difficult and emotionally challenging. Finding the best one you can afford will give you peace of mind.
. . Choose an attorney . o t w Ho
T
here are many reasons people choose attorneys. Sometimes it’s a decision resulting from an immediate need — an accident or injury, or more dire circumstances involving the police and courts. Others choose attorneys to watch over their personal legal and business matters, as well as wills and estate planning that require legal documents. While there are some reputable online services that offer people the ability to complete simple legal tasks without hiring an attorney, most Americans at some point will need the services of a professional lawyer. One thing is for sure — it’s best to have a trusted attorney by your side before you need one. Choosing the right attorney can mean the difference between freedom and a criminal conviction, losing your shirt in a divorce settlement or ensuring you don’t get taken advantage of in a busi-
ness deal. Opting to represent yourself under these circumstances is often a costly mistake. Attorneys know the laws loop holes that may help your case. They know how to work with other attorneys and can recommend the best legal strategy for your case. They also understand how to properly fill out the correct files, forms and paperwork. Here are some factors to keep in mind when choosing a lawyer.
AFFORDABILITY Settling for inexpensive legal representation can be a big mistake. Quality should always come first when it comes to attorneys. If you’re facing a criminal case and cannot afford an attorney, you have the right to a court-appointed lawyer. Taxpayers pay these representatives to help people in need. A court-appointed attorney can provide you with invalu-
able assistance. Also, never hire an attorney who has been disbarred in any state. And be wary of those who have been sanctioned by their state bar.
RELEVANT ISSUES When selecting an attorney, be sure to find one specializing in the area in which you need assistance. For example, people who have been arrested for driving while intoxicated will require a criminal lawyer who specializes in traffic law. Real estate transactions are best handled by a lawyer specializing in that field. Many lawyers specialize in a variety of legal issues.
REFERENCES Finding a quality attorney can often be as simple as asking your family or friends for referrals. If you are get-

ting a divorce, look for people in your social network who have been through a divorce who were pleased with their representation. You can also ask attorneys for references. A true professional should be able to provide you with recommendations from previous clients.
CASE HISTORY Check your attorney’s case history to get an understanding of the legal professional’s competency. Websites will help you determine a lawyer’s success rate. You can also find out if an attorney you are considering has a high settlement rate. Ask attorneys directly about their case histories. Any lawyer with a good track record will readily provide the information.
CONSULTATION The meeting will allow you to discover if the lawyers is a good match for you. If you feel discomfort during the meeting, do not hire the attorney. Simply thank them for their time.

But it’s worth the time and effort to survey funeral homes in your area and take account of the services and prices before making a selection. People often select a funeral home because it’s nearby or has been recommended by someone they trust. Here are some tips to help make choosing the right funeral home less stressful.

rangements in the past, you may be tempted to just go with the funeral home you have experience with. While this may be a smart option for some people, it’s not always the right option. Depending on how long it’s been since you needed to make funeral arrangements for a loved one, the price of that particular funeral home may have gone up. That’s why it is wise to shop around and compare the prices of the various funeral homes in your community.
ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS Even if you have never had to choose a funeral home in the past, you may have a friend or two who has. Ask these friends if they would recommend the services provided at the funeral homes they have used. They may be able to share valuable information about the staff, facility and
prices of a specific funeral home.
ASK ABOUT PACKAGES Whether your deceased loved one had a specific list for their final wishes or you have to make these decisions for yourself, it is important that you ask a potential funeral home what types of packages they offer. You will find that not all funeral homes are created equal, and each offers their own different ways of handling a service. No matter what type of requirements you have, it is best to choose a funeral home that will cater to your specific needs in order to make this difficult situation a little less daunting.
CARING STAFF When visiting a potential funeral home, the funeral director can be a major deciding factor when you choose
whether or not to use this particular company to handle the funeral of your loved one. A caring and professional funeral director and staff will take the time to explain all your options in an empathetic way so you can make a better choice when choosing a funeral home. If the director seems short or uninterested in your needs or makes you feel like you and your deceased loved one aren’t important, you won’t want to choose this facility to handle the funeral of your loved one. While dealing with the death of a loved one is hard, choosing the right funeral home can help relieve you of some stress. If you want your loved one to receive the proper funeral he or she deserves, following the above listed tips should help you make the right choice.

f you, like millions of Americans, have experienced a hearing loss, you may be advised to obtain a hearing aid. Hearing aids are miracles of modern science, restoring hearing and increasing a sense of confidence and erase feelings of isolation. While an audiologist can diagnose and treat hearing loss and inner ear and structural issues, a hearing aid dispenser can assist you in assessing your loss and selecting the proper hearing aid. Here are some things to look for when choosing a hearing aid dispenser.

Since most of us aren’t experts on hearing aids, you need to look for a dispenser who is. Not only should they have an understanding of the medical reasons behind hearing loss — since every hearing situation is different — but they should have in-depth knowledge of their hearing aid products.
Hearing aid dispensers offer products from several brands at a variety of price points. Find out which brands the dispenser carries and also inquire about their price range. Find a dispenser that accepts major insurers such as Humana, Aetna, United Healthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. These insurers may cover some or all of the cost of hearing aids. Look for Vendors such as TruHearing, Nations Hearing, Hearing Care
Ask if the dispenser offers a trial period for hearing aids. Some companies offer a 30-day trial so you can make sure the product works exactly as you expect. You should also ask about what kind of warranty the hearing aid comes with. Many hearing aids are available with coverage for loss or damage, almost like an insurance policy, which can be

very important down the road. Make sure you understand what the warranty covers, how much it costs and whether there will be any fees if the hearing aid needs to be replaced or repaired during the warranty period.
FOLLOW-UP SERVICE When you buy a hearing aid from a dispenser, one of the things you’re paying for is good service. And that includes service after the sale. This is especially true when it comes time to have your hearing aid adjusted or repaired. It’s common for hearing aids to require several follow-up visits to make sure they are fitted and adjusted correctly for your ear, so you should look for a dispenser that is both technically proficient and a good listener. They should be able to understand your hearing needs and make any changes necessary to fix any problems you find.

hether you’re establishing personal medical care for the first time as an adult or your changing needs require you to find a new doctor, finding a good primary care physician is not easy. Some people have limited choices, depending upon their health insurance plans, but most have options. You may prefer a male or a female, or a doctor who specialize in internal medicine. Location and access, too, are always primary concerns. For your best health, you need to have a good relationship with your doctor. And if you want to have a good relationship with your doctor, you’ll need to begin by choosing a physician who is an excellent listener and who takes patient concerns seriously. But there are some other things you need to consider when feeling out a new doctor’s office.
Here are some things to think about:
INSURANCE
Insurance companies have contracts with individuals or group practices. It is likely that you cannot go outside of your insurer’s provider network without paying an additional fee. Your primary care doctor should be able to understand your medical needs, as well as offer you appropriate referrals should you need a specialist. Some insurance carriers do not impose restrictions on your choice of physicians. If you have this kind of policy, look to find potential doctors in your area.
MEETING YOUR NEEDS Experts recommend selecting a general practitioner to serve as your primary care physician. This professional might be an internal medicine doctor or a member of a family practice.
Under some circumstances, it is better to select a doctor practicing within a particular specialty. Women might feel more comfortable with an obstetrician/gynecologist as a primary care physician. A pediatrician might be the primary care physician for children. Seniors could even have a geriatric specialist for their primary care physician.
ASK FOR REFERRALS Friends, family and other trusted sources are the best way to find a new doctor. People will gladly give referrals when they have had positive experiences with their health care providers. They will also provide feedback when the experience was not to their liking. The American Medical Association or other professional physicians’ organizations in your area will be another useful resource.
Prior to making a final decision, always confirm that your physician has a current license to practice with the state medical board. This licensing body will also tell you of any pending disciplinary action or complaints. Not every doctor accepts new patients. Once you have collected a list of possible physicians, contact them to make sure they will accept new patients, as well as the insurance you carry.
CONVENIENCE Convenience is another important factor when choosing a physician. His or her office should be easily accessible from your home or workplace. Ensure the doctor has admitting privileges at your preferred hospital in the event you need treatment. Ask where your physician can perform diagnostic tests and procedures. Some doctors might use a separate facility rather than their own offices. Finally, inquire how long it usually takes to book an appointment. When an emergency arises, you will want to know that your new doctor can see you quickly.

any people wrongly believe that estate planning is for the wealthy with a large number of assets. Everyone should have a will, but most will benefit from an estate plan, the best way to ensure your wishes are fulfilled after your death — or even prior to your death if you don’t want to handle your affairs or are unable to manage them. With an estate plan you can dictate how you want your property and other assets handled to help your family avoid legal difficulties, inconvenience, unnecessary taxation and family arguments. An estate planning professional can have a lasting impact on your legacy. Estate planning isn’t just about protecting heirlooms and it’s more than just creating a will; it also provides security for your family. Consider these tips for creating a sound, logical estate plan.
HOW TO GUIDE 2022
Choose an estate planner SEEK LEGAL COUNSEL
While some people use online forms to draft a simple will, most people will benefit from consulting with an estate planning attorney. This experienced professional can create legal documents with your specific circumstances in mind. It’s true everyone should have a will, regardless of age. But that is only the first step in developing a solid estate plan. You should also create a living will, power of attorney and possibly a trust. Consult an attorney who has experience in developing estate plans for those whose situations are similar to yours.
LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES Life insurance policies provide for loved ones in the event of your death. There are a wide range of options, and only a few will make sense for your
situation. A professional can guide you through the possibilities and help you make appropriate choices. Term life insurance policies are generally less expensive than other types of coverage. But whole life policies, annuities and other insurance products may be more appropriate for your circumstances. Understand what you might be buying. In some cases, a policy may benefit the salesperson more than it does the customer.
FUNERAL EXPENSES Funerals are very expensive, sometimes costing up to $10,000. You don’t want to leave your family with large bills. That’s why you should plan ahead to cover the cost of your own funeral. Pre-paid funeral plans are a popular option, or you can simply buy a burial

plot in advance so that one major task will be handled before your death. It may be uncomfortable and even frightening to consider, but it is something that must be addressed as part of a solid estate plan. Visit funeral homes in your area to discuss prepayment options.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY Communicate with your family in general terms about your estate plan. Talking to them about what they can expect could head off estate disputes and heartache. A good estate planner can help you navigate complicated family dynamics and concerns that may accompany this process. The right estate plan and experienced professionals can make your legacy a blessing that your heirs will treasure for the rest of their lives.

ccording to Forbes magazine, more than 50 percent of the working population works for a small business. The Small Business Association reports there are almost 28 million small businesses in the United States. Many small businesses are home-based and hundreds get started each month. Despite their prevalence, only a handful of small businesses survive more than 10 years. Small-business owners must learn how to properly market their businesses and garner a larger audience to stay afloat. While there’s no set amount a business should devote to advertising and marketing, such expenses should be included in an organization’s operational budget. Small-business owners just getting started may want to consider the following tips as they attempt to market

Local newspapers, television and radio stations often offer small business discounts. • Create an online presence. A survey from online marketing firm Yodle found that only about half of small businesses have websites. Customers routinely go online to learn more about businesses and make purchases. Customers will visit websites to find directions to brick-and-mortar stores, find store hours and/or learn about the products or services offered by a particular firm. Small-business owners should establish
an online presence and ensure the site is routinely updated and modernized. • Sponsor local events. For a relatively small investment, small businesses can get their names out to the public by sponsoring community events. When approached by schools and other organizations, lend your help. Donate a basket of goods or a certificate for services for gift auctions. Work with organizations to donate a portion of sales to a charity or school through a specialized fundraiser. Contact a sports league to see if your company name can be printed on uniforms or used on banners around the field. Not only will this get your name out, but it also will establish a positive image of your company. • Establish yourself as an ‘expert.’ Be accessible to journalists and media outlets who may need quotes or insight
when writing articles. Local papers and circulars can get your name out to the community and bring in new customers. Being quoted in print helps establish a reputation as being an authority in your field. • Don’t ignore social media. According to Adroit Digital, 75 percent of Americans who use the internet admit that product information found on social media influences their shopping behavior and enhances brand loyalty. ou own a car. You are, more than likely and unfortunately, going to need the services of a professional auto body shop at some point. From dents and scrapes to fenderbenders and more intense damage resulting from an accident, repairing your vehicle requires the services of expert professionals from an experienced, reputable auto body shop. Not surprisingly, shops specializing in this service can vary in quality, reliability and cost. It’s not unusual for auto body repair estimates to differ by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. To get the best work at the fairest price requires an investment in time and asking the right questions. Choosing the right body shop depends on many factors, such as the extent of damage, whether the costs are

born by yourself or insurance, the experience of the shop with your make and model of vehicle and the shop’s history and reputation, among others. Paramount to your search is finding an auto body shop that’s honest, trustworthy and dependable. That choice will ensure that your vehicle is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are an unfortunate, but necessary, part of life for most people. Have a list of companies, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be
displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. A good source for finding an auto body shop is your local newspaper. Local businesses advertise and many times you can find special deals to help save you money. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone and ask pertinent questions. How long have they been in business? What are their specialties? How soon can you bring your vehicle in for an inspection? Ask to set up an appointment for a free inspection. Then further investigate the business. Look around their lobby. Is it clean? Do they have their license and any awards or certificates posted? Do they care enough about their customers to offer reading material, coffee or water? Consider prices. Are they comparable

to other body shops? While you want to find a great deal, cheaper is not always better. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Often, there are hidden damages that cannot be detected until repair work begins on the vehicle.

n a world of almost exclusively electronic communication, it’s surprising how much paperwork still piles up. While many Americans have elected to receive electronic copies of sensitive documents such as tax files, there’s still a great many who prefer to maintain paper copies of these and other important documents. If you own or run a business, even that small trove of financial and personal documents quickly piles up, and disposing of it thoroughly and securely becomes a priority. Confidentiality is important, particularly for businesses in competitive industries. That’s why a good shredding service can be a major help in keeping fraudsters and potential spies from viewing your business documents. Shredding services will handle confidential paperwork easily and efficiently.
Choose a shredding service
Medical professionals, attorneys and banks are particularly in need of shredding services. If sensitive, confidential information is leaked, your business could be legally liable. Why risk a lawsuit? A good document shredding service will help you avoid the hassle and scare of being vulnerable to lawsuits and crime.
TRUST AND SECURITY Trust is the key word when looking for a document shredding company. After all, they will be handling your confidential papers. Ask other area businesses which shredding company they use. Getting a good recommendation from a fellow business owner is a great way to guarantee your satisfaction with a shredding company. Look for a company with a long track record. The more experience they have,
the better service they can provide. Inquire about their method of destruction. It is a key consideration, as you need to be certain these documents are handled with great care. If you are comfortable with using an off-site service, ask for references before determining if they have a high level of security. Ask how and where waste is disposed. If your company values environmentallyfriendly products, using a document shredding service that recycles can be a fantastic choice.
CERTIFICATION Choose a company that is certified through the National Association of Information Destruction. Proper certification means your documents will be handled with the utmost professionalism. A certified service takes
superior precautions so that your documents will not wind up in criminal hands. When interviewing service companies, ask about liability insurance. You need to know that your business is protected in the event something happens while your records and documents are being transported. Take your budget into consideration. Ask for written quotes from several companies. Comparing these prices and service details will help you understand what you are paying ahead of time. When choosing a document shredding service, always consider confidentiality and safety first. The lowest price quote will not always be the best. Remember, the reputation of your company is at stake. Select a company that makes you feel comfortable. It will leave you and your company feeling more secure and satisfied.

etting a great tan used to mean hours lying at the pool or outdoors in your backyard. Not so anymore. Tanning salons have long been staples in many towns and cities. A relatively brief visit every week under special lamps on tanning beds can keep that healthy glow fresh year-round. But choosing a tanning salon isn’t like other self-care boutiques and salons, such as hair styling or nail care. Because it involves exposing your skin to light sources that may be damaging, selecting a clean salon with professional employees will ensure you get the most out of your visits whether you choose a tanning bed or a spray tan. There are plenty of options available, and that can make finding a salon that fits your needs a daunting task. You could research tanning salons on

the internet. Many salon websites list prices and hours of operation. Finding one that fits your schedule will help narrow down your choices. Also consider using your friends and family as a resource. Ask them where they tan. Once you have several options on a list, visit each salon and ask questions. If you have never been tanning before, the salon should allow you a maximum of 10 minutes for the first few visits. If you are an experienced tanning salon client, you probably know what you need. But if you are a novice, consider the following factors:
and fall asleep while others require you to stand. Some salons offer both types so you can experiment to see which style works best for you. Are there UVA or high-pressure beds available? Studies have revealed that UVA-only beds are a safer option because they do not contain cancercausing UVB rays. Spray tanning is another safe, fun option. Some salons offer spray tanning packages or spray tanning/tanning bed combinations. Spray tanning can be expensive, so including it in a package is often great for your budget.
EQUIPMENT
Safety and cleanliness are important considerations when choosing a tanning salon. Never use outdated, dirty or ill-kept equipment. Your health depends on the salon you choose, so pick wisely.
Does the salon offer modern equipment? There are various tanning bed manufacturer and spray tan companies. Some tanning beds allow you to relax
CLEANLINESS
19
Are the beds cleaned after guests have finished using them, or are customers required to clean the beds? Avoid salons who do not handle the cleaning and sanitizing themselves. Are tanning bulbs changed only after the lights burn out? Is there a strict changing schedule in place? Ask them about the safety and health regulations they follow.
PRICES There are usually a variety of packages available at salons. You might pay for a single tan or a set number of tans. You might also purchase a package with an allotted number of months. Understanding your state’s regulations will help you. Some states only allow you to tan once every 48 hours. In that instance, an unlimited package might not be a good value for your money.

o matter where you live, everyone experiences power outages from time to time. Those living in storm-prone areas suffer worse than most. That’s why investing in a powerful generator can bring you peace of mind knowing you have instant access to power when outages occur. Even if you rarely experience power outages, generators are useful for powering all sorts of tools and appliances without needing access to power outlets. Generators come in a wide variety of sizes and power output.
AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS Automatic standby generators are on continuous standby, meaning that the generator can power itself on and off, regardless of whether you are home.
Choose a generator
Once a stop in the flow of electricity is detected, these machines respond instantly. They turn themselves on and begin supplying power. Installed outside of your home, these generators are similar to central heating and air units. They are powered by liquid propane or natural gas. The generator supplies electricity directly to your home’s circuit breaker. Because they operate quietly and smoothly, they are not an annoyance or distraction to you or your neighbors.
PORTABLE GENERATORS Portable generators are built to remain outside of your home. These mobile units are fueled by gasoline and manually operated. Extension cords will make it easier to plug objects directly into the generator. These kinds of generators are usually cheaper than
automatic standby generators.
STANDBY VS. PORTABLE Despite the price difference, there are plenty of advantages to buying an automatic standby generator. Since automatic standby generators use natural gas and liquid propane, the cost of running this machine will be cheaper. The Red Cross endorses automatic standby generators because they are a cleaner method of powering your home. Portable generators produce harmful by products that can damage the environment. These units keep your house neat and clutter-free. Portable generators require numerous wires and extension cords running through your home. It is much easier to have power connected directly into your home’s
infrastructure.
GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR GENERATOR It is important to pick a generator that can supply power to all the items you need in your house. Understand running and surge wattage. These two values inform you how much power your appliances need and the maximum amount of electricity they can handle. Prior to purchasing a generator, check the safety tags on your appliances for the correct wattage. The running and surge wattage on the generator needs to be high enough to satisfy the ratings of your most demanding appliances. Don’t be caught wishing you had bought a generator the next time there’s a power outage.

e’re taught early the basics of oral care — brushing and flossing — and to form a morning and evening routine to clean our teeth. As adults the onus is on us to continue that pattern and schedule regular visits to the dentist to keep our teeth and gums healthy. Finding a dentist and developing a relationship with them is an important part of maintaining overall health. Seeing a good dentist regularly allows them to become familiar with your concerns and treat any specific issues. A good dentist will make you feel comfortable and explain every procedure in an understandable way. Finding a dentist near your home or workplace will help you make your appointments on time. When searching for a dentist, make sure the office hours work for your schedule.
HOW TO GUIDE 2022
Choose the right dentist
Whether you’re moving to a new area or haven’t made time to find a regular dentist, here’s a few tips on how to start your search.
ASK AROUND First, ask your social network for recommendations. Friends, family and colleagues can be a great resource. Searching on the internet for dental offices in your area will also help. Professionals often have their own websites, which include the backgrounds of those working there. The website may also tell you about how they handle procedures and appointments, as well as specialized services they offer.
INTERVIEW DENTISTS Once you have gathered a list, begin calling each prospective dentist. You can talk to a receptionist or other staff
person if the dentist is unavailable. Check to make sure the dentist earned the necessary degree from a reputable school and is current on all licensing and continuing educational requirements. Ideally, he will be familiar with the latest dental technologies and trends. Ask if the dental office provides emergency services. If you break a tooth or need to have a root canal done right away, you will want to use your chosen dentist. You don’t want to have to search for a dentist when you are in pain. Lead time for appointments is another consideration. Some offices might be able to see you right away, while others may have a three-week wait time. Your prospective dentist should accept your dental insurance. If don’t have dental insurance, inquire about payment plans. The office should give you an estimate before performing any work.
21
OFFICE VISIT When someone meets all of your requirements, visit the office. The staff should be professional and friendly. Every dentist should be willing to answer all of your questions. Some people are afraid of dentists or of pain. If you have any concerns, communicate with the staff and dentist. Many professionals are willing to go above and beyond to help you work through these issues. A basic oral health history should be taken by the dentist or staff. They should tell you about future treatment and prevention options. A quality dentist will help you feel comfortable. Teeth are extremely important to your overall health. They can also help or hinder your appearance. Finding a good dentist is like finding a friend who consistently brings out your best smile.

oday’s small business owners face unique challenges that businesspeople of yesteryear never had to confront. While the internet has made it possible for even the smallest businesses to have a global footprint, it’s also forced business owners to devote substantial time to managing their online reputations. A company’s online reputation can have a major impact on its ability to survive and thrive. In its 2018 “Local Consumer Review Survey,” BrightLocal, a company that focuses on the needs of digital marketing agencies and local businesses, found that 91 percent of consumers between the ages of 18 and 34 trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In addition, the survey found that 57 percent
of consumers won’t use a business that has a star rating of fewer than four stars. The BrightLocal survey underscores the effort small-business owners must put into managing their companies’ online reputations. Whether business owners feel their online reputations are warranted or not, ignoring them can greatly affect their bottom lines. The following are a handful of simple ways business owners can manage their companies’ online reputations in the hopes of benefiting their businesses and expanding their customer base. • Don’t ignore negative reviews. Small Biz Ahead, a service from the insurance provider The Hartford that aims to help business owners manage and grow their businesses, advises busi-
ness owners to acknowledge negative reviews. Respond privately to customers, apologizing for their unsatisfactory experience and thanking them for their feedback. When communicating with customers, always keep these communications friendly and constructive. Dismissive, confrontational and/ or rude interactions with customers will only further damage your online reputation. • Actively monitor your reputation. Websites such as Yelp and Google, via its Google Reviews capability, give customers plenty of places to go to share their comments about your business. Stay up to date on these, making a concerted effort to monitor your reputation. If you’re open for business seven days a week, chances are customers

HOW TO GUIDE 2022
Choose the best pediatrician for your child
23
rom the time they are born until they become young adults, growing children have particular health needs tended to by medical specialists known as pediatricians. If you haven’t developed a relationship with a long-term pediatrician, your doctor may refer you and there are likely dozens to choose from in any given town or city. But primarily, you’ll want to find an experienced pediatrician who communicates well with you and your child, who understands your child’s specific problems and how best to treat them. Fortunately, pediatricians are trained not only in medical treatment for children but how to make them most comfortable during their visits. Welcoming, child-friendly waiting and exam rooms, along with a caring, easy-going manner work wonders on youngsters. If you’re looking for a pediatrician for your child, here’s how to get started.
RECOMMENDATIONS Family, friends and acquaintances will likely have recommendations about good pediatricians in your area. Parents will be happy to share about their experiences at the pediatrician’s office. You can also check with your family doctor or obgyn who delivered your baby. They will have informed recommendations to help you select the best doctor. Don’t just collect one or two names. Ideally, you should have a list of at least three professionals. It will help you compare and made the right selection.
INSURANCE Next, look at your insurance policy. Find out if any of the people on the list are part of your network plan. Remember that children visit the doctor more frequently than adults because they catch a lot of viruses while building up their immune systems. Doctors not covered by your insurance should be crossed off your list. You might also reconsider your insurance policy, if possible.
When you meet with the doctor, focus on his or her philosophy. Some physicians prefer to run lots of tests. Others have a more relaxed and homespun approach. Parents who follow a wellness philosophy might have to look harder to find a doctor who is openminded about alternative medicine. Be sure to find out if your doctor is receptive to this idea.
NARROWING THE LIST
THE VISIT
It is time to arrange a meeting with each physician so you can find out who will work best with your child. Look at their office locations. They should be in a convenient location, not far from your home. You will probably visit this doctor quite often, so convenience is a big factor.
If you haven’t chosen a pediatrician before giving birth, bring your child along for this meeting. It will help you gauge their interaction. The doctor should make your child feel at ease. He should be patient, tolerant and friendly. You must feel comfortable with this medical professional as well. He should take the time to answer your
questions thoughtfully. Inquire about their emergency policy. Does the office accept walk-ins? If your child gets sick in the middle of the night, can you call the pediatrician or nurse? Find out about office hours and when you need to visit the hospital instead. Is the office decorated with children in mind? Is it a safe, inviting atmosphere? Does the practice use modern equipment? Are exam rooms clean? Many pediatricians now offer separate waiting rooms for children who are not sick. These “well child” waiting areas help stop the spread of viruses. If your child is there for a checkup, it is a bad idea to have him sit next to another child who has the flu. With this strategy, you should have an easier time selecting a pediatrician. Choosing well now will save you time and trouble in the future.
