What is STEM? • STEM is an acronym for – SCIENCE – TECHNOLOGY – ENGINEERING – MATHEMATICS • Students benefit from the knowledge, team building strategies, and problem solving abiliNes taught in STEM‐based courses.
STEM in High School • IntroducNon to Engineering ‐ students work in teams to learn how to use sketching and geometry in the design process. • Principles of Engineering ‐ students use formulas to make calcula2ons for material tes2ng and explore the fields of reliability engineering and kinema2cs. • Digital Electronics ‐ students learn the fundamentals of analog and digital electronics to solve open ended problems. • Aerospace Engineering ‐ students are engaged in the world of engineering design related to aeronau2cs and flight.
STEM in Middle School • The Middle School Gateway to Technology curriculum is a sequence of 9 week units that prepare students for a successful secondary STEM experience.
STEM. in Middle School • Design and Modeling ‐ students learn about the engineering design process and computer 3D modeling. • AutomaNon and RoboNcs ‐ students discover the complex development and problem solving that they involve. • Flight and Space ‐ students explore the technology of aeronau2cs and the connec2ons between math and science. • Magic of Electrons ‐ students develop knowledge and skills in basic circuitry design and the impact of electricity in our lives. • Science of Technology ‐ students learn how science has affected technology through history: mechanics of mo2on, etc.

Naval Science & Leadership • The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Program prepares students with leadership and self‐discipline skills for college. • AFA can nominate 14 cadets to service academies and numerous cadets receive full‐pay ROTC college scholarships. • For the past 10 years: 32 Academy appointments and 77 ROTC scholarships.
• AFA is located on Boca Ciega Bay and has its own boat basin equipped with various boats: lasers, sunfish, 420’s, and powerboats. • All students must earn their Qualified Boat Handlers (QBH) license in order to graduate.

Academic Programs • The AviaNon Academy allows students to complete flight training during the academic day in order to meet the requirements for a private pilot’s license. • Naval Science builds leadership skills to ensure that each cadet enrolled is prepared to apply to military service academies and/or the universi2es of their choice. • Marine Science Focus will feature in‐depth explora2on of the aqua2c environments, capitalizing on all the excellent resources available at Farragut.
