Beyond OUR uniforms, WE are... girls who love science. Boys earning our pilots’ licenses. Day students from across town... and boarding students from across the globe. We are all part of a community. We are all preparing for college. We are all just students. And we are each going to find our passion for the future.

IF YOU JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER, YOU WILL MISS A GREAT STORY. The same is true of us. At Admiral Farragut Academy, only our “covers” are the same. Beyond our uniforms, we are as diverse as can be. Our academic and extracurricular involvements are, too. We invite you to discover the people – and possibilities – within Admiral Farragut Academy. Our uniforms unify us rather than define us. In these pages, you’ll meet some of the fine young women and men of Farragut who speak for themselves.

About Farragut Admiral Farragut Academy is a private, coeducational, college preparatory school that develops leadership and strong character in its students by following a naval military model. Our Upper Division, comprised of ninth through twelfth grade boarding and day students, is required to participate in our Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program. Our Middle Division, comprised of sixth through eighth grade boarding and day students, receives naval military exposure. The Lower Division, comprised of pre-kindergarten through fifth grade day students, places no emphasis on the military. For students who live within an hour or two of campus, a 5-day boarding option is available.

ACADEMICS

ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY | 5

BEYOND THE TYPICAL CLASSROOM AND CURRICULUM Individualized attention is something students need, parents want, and teachers strive to give. At Admiral Farragut Academy, the class sizes are small – typically 15 cadets – allowing our teachers to devote more time to each student.

THE FARRAGUT 4 Upon graduation, a Farragut cadet will have the ability to: 1. Communicate clearly (both orally and through writing) 2. Use technology confidently and effortlessly 3. Think critically 4. Learn independently

Known for being exceptionally caring, our enthusiastic teachers inspire enthusiastic learners. Their technologically enhanced teaching methods are better able to accommodate the different ways today’s students learn, thus nurturing each student’s genuine interest in the subject matter and laying the foundation for a lifetime love of learning. ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY | 6

IT’S OKAY IF YOU DON’T PLAN TO PURSUE A MILITARY CAREER.

Most of our students don’t. It is true we are the first secondary school in the United States to be designated as an Honor Naval Academy by an act of Congress. The Department of the Navy reaccredits us each year. We are also the only private school in the country that offers the NJROTC program.

Knowledge Conquers All

Yet the true value of a Farragut education lies beyond the military influence, in its dedication to fully prepare each cadet as a college student, 21st century professional, and global citizen. ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY | 7

Develop discipline, structure, leadership ‌ Learn Chinese, marine biology and aeronautical science Here, our mission is to promote academic excellence, leadership and social development in each student. A structured, nurturing environment is key because it builds character. Our military component is in place primarily to instill the values of self-discipline, orderliness, accountability, and respect for self and others. Upon this traditional foundation, we have built exceptional scholastic programs that are both challenging and varied:

Language Learn to speak Chinese with your classmate from Beijing or Spanish to your roommate from Columbia, or help your teammates from Russia and Germany improve their English. Visit Greece, England, Costa Rica, or be an exchange student in China. Apply your language skills both inside and outside the classroom, on and off campus, or travel the world exploring cultures and countries during our annual (and optional) Perspective Week. Two years of foreign language study are required for graduation, but students are encouraged to continue their education beyond the requirement. Because Admiral Farragut Academy is popular with international students, we have a comprehensive and supportive ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program.

Science and Technology Participate in a competition with fellow classmates to create an earthquakeproof building. Then get to eat the losing entries, since all were constructed out of edible materials! Whether studying Earth Science or Internet Technology, our teachers strive to create indelible lessons. Our technology curriculum teaches a broad range of Internet Technology (IT) skills, from planning and building networks to applying advanced troubleshooting techniques, as well as web design, multimedia, Java programming and UNIX. In addition, the Academy makes extensive use of online collaborative tools. This rigorous curriculum is a stepping stone to pursuing electrical engineering, computer science, or management information systems in college.

MIDDLE DIVISION Grades 6 through 8 comprise the Middle Division. Our goal is to prepare students for the more rigorous challenges of the Upper Division (9-12). Middle Division cadets receive an exposure to the military and participate in daily inspections and weekly drill. Qualified eighth grade students are able to take math and language classes for high school credit.

ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY | 8

Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) Courses First and foremost, as a college preparatory school, we like to give our students every opportunity to challenge themselves as far as they would like to go in the subjects that interest them. That’s why we offer a variety of honors, AP, and dual enrollment courses. In fact, students can earn up to two full years’ worth of college credits by the time they graduate Farragut by taking advantage of our dual enrollment program through St. Petersburg College.

Sailing Imparting a knowledge of the sea is one of Farragut’s areas of expertise – from our Marine Lab and Naval Science program to the joy of sailing and racing a fleet of lasers, sunfish, and 420s or earning certification in SCUBA diving. Clearly one of our more enjoyable graduation requirements is that all cadets earn their Qualified Boat Handler (QBH) certification. And, with a beautiful body of water right in our front yard, it’s easy and enjoyable to learn.

Riflery Farragut has an indoor rifle range built to Olympic specifications. Air rifles are used. After passing a safety test, Upper Division students may try out for a spot on one of our three national teams.

Aviation Academy What started out as a popular science elective is now a focused academic tract. Our Aviation Academy program enables Upper Division students to complete flight training during the academic day to meet the requirements for a private pilot’s license. Students learn basic aerodynamics, aircraft performance, flight planning, weather data interpretation, Federal Aviation Regulations, and flight training.

“Being in the middle division, we are surrounded by the lower and upper divisions, but you would never know. It’s like one big community.”

What do you think is a common misperception people have of Admiral Farragut Academy? That it’s an all-boys school. Definitely. Anytime we go off campus for group activities, people are always surprised to see my girlfriends and me in our uniforms, having fun. They don’t think the school is co-ed, but it is – for almost 20 years now!

What do you think of the naval influence? I think it’s good for kids. It teaches us how to be responsible and organized. I don’t plan to go into the military, but I know all the skills I’ve learned will help me in the future.

What has surprised you the most about being a student here? Since I live around here, I pretty much knew a lot about Farragut before I came here. So I wouldn’t say I’m surprised about anything… but what I really like is that I can be serious about my school work and be into a lot of sports, too. That I can do both. I want to go to a good college when I graduate here. I think being here will help me do that.

farragut students come from all over Recent countries include:

There’s more to a campus than the physical points of interest. Sure it helps that Admiral Farragut Academy’s gated campus is located right on beautiful Boca Ciega Bay in sun-kissed St. Petersburg, Florida. But it’s the synergy of the people that make it the special place it is. Our students want to be here. Our teachers want to be here. You can feel this energy in the air. There’s a close-knit feeling – not just among students, but between students and faculty.

Whether a day student, 5-day boarder or 7-day boarder … from another country, from another state, or from around the corner, the Farragut campus is a neighborhood for everyone. We’re proud of our diversity. Having students come from all over the world truly helps to make us each better global citizens, and connects us to friends and cultures we never imagined.

What do you think of the naval influence? I like to experience new things, so the military aspect was really a new thing for me. It’s really fun to carry our rifles in drills and parades. And to make our uniforms nice and neat and our shoes shiny. I actually really enjoy it!

What has surprised you the most about being a student here? I got to go to Costa Rica with my Spanish class and, while we were there, we helped rescue sea turtles! There was so much to learn and see! BEYOND PLAYING TO WIN

Farragut athletic facilities include:

At Farragut, our BlueJackets like to win. But even more than that, we just love to compete.

❱❱ A

We also place equal value on good sportsmanship: Whether we win or lose, it’s important to do it with dignity and honor. Farragut has no mandatory athletic requirement, but all students are encouraged to participate and most students are involved in at least one athletic team during the year.

We have a wide variety of sports from which to choose. Sports really drive the spirit of our school – the energy of the athletes and the enthusiasm of the supporters. Recent Farragut alumni include Marreese Speights, the #16 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, as well as Claire Thompson, a 2008 U.S. Olympic women’s swimming team hopeful.

What do you think is a common misperception people have of Admiral Farragut Academy? “ This is my first year here and I would say I have some of the best friends I’ve ever had. A lot of the kids here are just like me: We all love to play sports.”

That we aren’t regular kids and we’re not allowed to have any fun. And that’s just not true. Yeah, we work hard, but we play hard and joke around a lot, too. Even with the teachers – especially since they’re our coaches!

What do you think of the naval influence? I like the structure. I like the military aspect because I have aspirations to go to the Naval Academy.

What has surprised you the most about being a student here? My experiences at Farragut have taught me a lot of leadership skills. They’ve taught me how to be much more prepared for college – and afterward, too. Farragut has basically given me a life that I never really would’ve had if I’d been at another school.

What do you think is a common misperception people have of Admiral Farragut Academy?

“ Here at Farragut it is a community environment. It’s like your own little neighborhood. You have people that board here, and you can hang out with people all the time. There’s always going to be somebody around that you’re friends with. Everybody basically knows each other.”

A lot of people have the misperception that it’s really strict and really tough. But I tell them it’s actually a really fun place to go. Admiral Farragut Academy is a great school. It’s a good place to learn and it prepares you very well for the future, no matter what you want to do. A lot people think we are sent here because it’s a military school. But in fact we choose to go here because of what we want to do in the future.

What do you think of the naval influence? I’ve learned to be really responsible. In the Color Guard or the Exhibition Drill Team you have to be responsible for every mistake you make. You have to really own up to it.

What has surprised you the most about being a student here? I’ve been a student at Farragut for eight years now. Something that has always impressed me is that we have many different people here who have many different interests – from bionuclear engineering to flying planes. There are great opportunities here to study what you want to study and get to know people you might not have met otherwise.

LOOK BEYOND MY UNIFORM “The school’s motto – Honor, Courage, Commitment – all three of these things help me to get along in everyday life, even when I’m not here at school. I think they’ll help me in the future, wherever I plan to go to college.” “I also take pride in wearing my uniform. I really enjoy wearing it, especially since I’ve acquired so many JROTC and Farragut ribbons to put on it.”

Full speED ahead! LOOK BEYOND ME, INTO MY FUTURE “Full speed ahead!” Admiral David Glasgow Farragut is known for uttering these words (after dismissing the potential danger of some infamous torpedoes). At our college preparatory academy named after this maverick man, we take his charge to mean, “wherever our graduates’ passions take them, they’ll have the self-discipline, wealth of knowledge, and belief in themselves to lead their lives full speed ahead – even when they encounter uncharted waters.” Our students rightly believe that their military exposure will serve them well in the future, as they face college visits and job interviews.

ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY | 28

The college of your choice Imagine being able to choose between the US Naval Academy and an ROTC scholarship to Cornell. Or choosing between the University of Florida and New York University (NYU), as our last two valedictorians did. Farragut graduates not only receive college acceptance, most have several choices as to the college or university they attend. To help in this process, our College Placement Office’s full-time counselor assists students with: ❱❱ college

applications ❱❱ college visits & interviews ❱❱ scholarship applications For a small school, Farragut continuously boasts significant scholarship dollars per capita. The Class of 2008, for example, earned approximately $6.69 million in scholarships and financial aid.

NJROTC – Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Because of our status as an Honor Naval school, Farragut is automatically authorized 12 nominations to service academies. Numerous cadets receive full-pay ROTC college scholarships. No public or private school in the U.S. consistently produces a higher percentage of ROTC scholarship appointments than Admiral Farragut Academy.

BEYOND A DOUBT As part of the admissions process, we actually ask each prospective student: “Do you want to be here? Desire is part of motivation. All Farragut cadets are highly motivated. Naturally, applicants must be able to do gradeappropriate college prep work and submit the required application, grades from the last three years, teacher references, and standardized test scores. Admiral Farragut Academy is committed to attracting a diverse and talented student body. We admit qualified students without regard to race, color, creed or gender. A misconception about Farragut is that it is expensive to attend. The cost of a Farragut education is competitive with other preparatory schools. Our Financial Assistance program strives to make it possible for deserving students to attend who might not otherwise be able to.
