ALUMNI UPDATE FORM PG 40

By CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr. Headmaster During the second week of March, representatives of the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the Florida Kindergarten Council (FKC) visited Admiral Farragut Academy to evaluate our school for purposes of re‐accreditation. The standard practice for independent schools allows each to conduct an evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities, and to receive valuable insight from other professional educators. It is comprehensive and exhaustive, but from the positive feedback we received, it was clear to the evaluation team that Admiral Farragut Academy is well equipped to produce leaders for the 21st century. In its report, the evaluation team commends the academy for our outstanding technological

strides, our curriculum, faculty, innovate multi‐cultural programs, and perhaps most importantly, our commitment to our mission, which stands on three pillars – academic excellence, leadership, and social development. It is difficult to express how pleased we are to have our efforts validated by other professionals. And perhaps it is no coincidence that our much anticipated 75th anniversary is just over the horizon. This is a time for celebration and of pride. With all the festivities we have planned, not the least of which is the 75th celebration, the event is the ideal opportunity for all alumni to once again realize, that it is indeed an honor to have graduated from such a fine institution. As I write about growth, much of what I can discuss will be obvious to our alumni upon their return. Our campus has improved. Our athletic facilities are competitive, from Al Ross Stadium to the newly

renovated Huntley gymnasium. Our classrooms employ state‐of‐the‐art technology and are supplemented by five separate computer labs, including one dedicated to the study of foreign languages. Our cadets are happy, involved, and motivated. Our teachers are caring and professional. Our Residence Hall is in the process of substantial renovations. The campus itself is now even completely wireless, meaning that our cadets now have the ability to access the Internet from almost anywhere, including their dorm rooms. Next year, as we move deeper into the 21st century, laptop computers will be required of our students and will become an essential part of the learning experience. The results of our evaluation exceeded our most optimistic predictions. The findings of the evaluation team could not have been more positive. They praised everything I have already mentioned and went a great deal further. In addition to affirming our mission, they praised our Strategic Plan – essentially our short and long term goals for the future, and also recognized the development of our Four Core Values – integrity, honor, perseverance, and wellness – as not only clearly at work in our cadet corps, but as vital to the long term survival, and uniqueness, of Admiral Farragut Academy. With this recent re‐accreditation such a rousing success, I want to thank you all for your support over the years, and to urge you to become even more involved. We want our alumni to come home to Farragut and to help continue to move our school forward. Our accomplishments have not simply been the results of work since our last accreditation five years ago, but of the 75 years of character borne out of our alumni, our parents, our faculty, and our cadets. 75 years after its creation, Farragut still stands tall and resolute, a lighthouse guiding its ships through choppy seas and toward safe ports. You have much to be proud of as an alumnus of Admiral Farragut Academy. I again encourage you to be a part of our 75th anniversary festivities. God speed to you all, and God Bless Admiral Farragut Academy.

JEAN‐FRANÇOIS ROSSIGNOL, MD, PhD, Establishes...“The Rossignol Academic Chair in Science” On Friday morning, April 11th, Dr. Jean‐François Rossignol presented his personal check for $200,000.00 to Headmaster, CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr. as fulfillment of his pledge to establish the Rossignol Academic Chair in Science for Admiral Farragut Academy. Dr. Rossignol is one of our newest members of the AFA Board of Trustees. He is a world‐ renowned researcher and educator in the field of tropical medicines. You can find him in Who’s Who in America and the World as a scientist‐educator. Dr. Rossignol is also celebrated in South America, and Africa. As a scientist‐educator at Dr. Jean‐François Rossignol Stanford University he is recognized for his medical thesis finding a cure for diarrhea and hepatitis illnesses in Africa. He is now doing extensive research in the field of human genomes. Our benefactor, is a unique human being who has placed his quest for helping humanity ahead of his pocketbook. Those who have benefited the most from his genius are those who through no fault of their own are unable to pay for the great gifts he has bestowed upon them. These peoples are insolvent people living in some of the poorest areas of our world, and suffering from infirmities that are so prevalent in their world. These diseases have been a challenge for Dr. Rossignol to conquer. Jean‐François Rossignol was born in Lyon, France. He attended the Sorbonne University in Paris, France from which he acquired his MD and PhD degrees. He is married, and he and his wife Patricia are our neighbors. He has two children by a former marriage, a son living in the United States, and a daughter living in Rome, Italy. Both of his children were brought up in Rome. Dr. Rossignol serves as Chairman and Chief Science Officer of Romark Laboratories, L.C. The motto of the Romark Laboratories is “Passion for Science. Passion for Life.” We are proud to have him as a friend and neighbor, and we are delighted that he has offered to participate in our 75th Anniversary Celebration next year. CAPT Fine accepts the $200K check.

NYC Alumni Gathering at the Penn Club

On February 29th we had a wonderful Alumni Gathering in NYC at the Penn Club of the University of Pennsylvania. Our host for the luncheon was AFA alumnus Donald Schreiber ‘46 who is also a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Though the weather was cold and blustery, there was a large contingent of Admiral Farragut Alumni present, including one wife and a guest. AFA Board Chairman, George J. Michel ‘49 spoke to the gathered alumni and presented an accurate picture of the condition of the school. He is the first member of the alumni to ever hold the position as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The Board has recently established new by‐laws requiring a rotating board of trustees, with term limits, and in addition they have added ex‐officio members. Mr. Michel indicated that the new Board of Trustees welcomes the attendance of alumni at any of its board meetings to assure transparency. He said, the desire of the Board is to establish an endowment program that will provide economic stability to the academy. These endowment gifts are for perpetuity and thus provide interest support to the school in the manner decided by the endowment donor. He encourages all alumni to make bequests a part of their manner of support. This has distinct advantages for the present, and will benefit the academy at a future moment. CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr., Headmaster spoke about the dynamics of the academic and educational programs at the academy. He mentioned that there will be five Service Academy appointments this year. Three, to the US Naval Academy; one, to West Point; and one, to the US Air Force Academy. Also, we will have

at least (12) ROTC Scholarships. The academy has raised the bar considerably over the last decade with our graduates attending many of the top universities in the country, such as Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, North Carolina (Chapel Hill), the University of Florida, and Vanderbilt. Alumni President Christian T. Chiari ‘92 spoke about the positive direction of the academy. He mentioned that he has personally witnessed alumni at Homecoming events talking to each other for over 20 minutes as they reminisced their AFA years before they realized they each had attended different campuses. Also, present was Christian Wagner ‘82 who will be the Alumni President for the 75th Anniversary in April of 2009. Other Alumni present at the Gathering in NYC were: Robert Cooper ‘ 52, David Cutler ‘88, William Garwood ‘49 Past Alumni President, Sam Heineman ‘49, Martin Ludwig ‘54, Fred Meyers ‘46, Ron Rubin ‘79, Howard Sakolsky ‘47 and Joy Stein , Don Schreiber ‘46 Past Alumni President, Donald Schwartz ‘49, Alex Siegel ‘03, William P. Smith ‘56 and his wife Faythe, Beverley C. Tyler ‘57, Robert C. Waldman ‘55, and Frank Wendt ‘42 Past Alumni President.

Board Chair George Michel ‘49 answers questions from Beverly C. Tyler ‘57 and Frank P. Wendt ‘42.

CLASS OF 1980 ESTABLISHES A MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Friends and family of Carlos Armando Uhrbach, Class of 1980 South Campus, are honoring his memory through the creation of a memorial fund to assist the continuing construction of the Alumni Center/Museum on the St. Petersburg campus of Admiral Farragut Academy. Uhrbach graduated from AFA in May, 1980; after more than five (5) years of education at the St. Petersburg Campus. He died in Miami, Florida, in February of 1987.

Named the Carlos A. Uhrbach Memorial Fund, friends, family and fellow classmates from the Class of 1980 are raising funds for a permanent fixture inside the new Alumni Center / Museum. Initial thoughts are a “computer/ technology center” for students, faculty, alumni and the general public to use.

This future gift will create a lasting legacy; not only for our fallen classmate’s family, but also to better connect fellow classmates who are currently living all over the world back to Admiral Farragut Academy. David L. Bowser, AFA

“Man the Rail” Alumni Tradition Marks its Third Year! The graduation for the 74th Graduating Class is just around the corner. For the past two years, Alumni (most wearing their Alumni Shirt) have attended the Graduation Exercises. This year, the Graduation is May 17th and we are expecting another large turnout of alumni to welcome the graduating classmen into the Admiral Farragut Alumni Association. Just before the graduates march to the front of the academy for the traditional concluding exercise, the alumni “Man the Rail” from the fountain to the Graduation Arch and congratulate them as they pass. On the outside of the Graduation Arch, the Alumni Association President, Christian T. Chiari ‘92 welcomes each new alumni. Immediately thereafter the new graduates sound the USS Farragut, DDG 37 ship’s bell as they continue to the front grinder for the final traditional conclusion of the graduation exercises by throwing their “hats in the air.”

Join us at Graduation and Man the Rail as we Welcome our New Alumni!

IS FARRAGUT IN YOUR WILL? As Farragut begins its 75th year, we hope that you will consider ways to assure its continued well‐being for the future. One important way is to remember the Academy in your will. To sustain its place among independent schools of the first rank, substantial endowment funds will be needed. With your support, Farragut will continue to educate young men and women for roles of leadership and responsibility in our complex society, plus prepare them adequately for whatever higher form of education they may choose. We ask you to plan now so that through your will, a life‐long interest in Farragut can be perpetuated by the establishment of a fund to endow Student Aid Funds, or perhaps a teaching chair or other special program of interest to you.

How to Make a Bequest to the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation

In addition to being one of the simplest ways to distribute your estate, your will can be a superb vehicle through which to make a charitable gift to the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation. The Foundation can be named as a beneficiary through a will or an amendment to the will. This amendment, called a codicil, means the entire will does not have to be redrafted. The following are types and examples of bequests:

Residuary bequest: A residuary bequest is used to give a portion of the estate property after all debts, taxes, expenses, and other bequests have been paid.

Example: I give the rest or residue of my estate (or a stated percentage of the residue) to the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation, Inc. ‐ a nonprofit corporation qualified under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, located in St. Petersburg, Florida ‐ to be used for its exempt purposes.

Specific bequest: A specific bequest is another way to make a charitable gift by will. With this bequest, you simply specify a dollar amount or a specific item of property. Example: I give $100,000 to the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation, Inc. a nonprofit corporation qualified under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, located in St. Petersburg, Florida ‐ to be used for its exempt purposes.

Contingent bequest: When writing a will, it is important to include provisions for the distribution of your property in the event that a beneficiary dies prior to your death, or a beneficiary disclaims the property. In anticipation of such an event, the Foundation could be named as an alternate or contingent beneficiary. Example: If (name of beneficiary) predeceases me or disclaims any interest in (describe property), I give such property to the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation, Inc. ‐ a nonprofit corporation qualified under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, located in St. Petersburg, Florida ‐ to be used for its exempt purposes. Restricted bequest: In the bequest provisions mentioned above, the language "to be used for its exempt purposes" is a general and unrestricted statement. If you have more specific purposes in mind, you should identify them more clearly. For example, if you wish to memorialize a family member or an honored colleague, you could establish a named fund (subject to required minimums) that will provide support for a program in which you or the named person have had a particular interest. Example: I give $50,000 to the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit corporation qualified under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, located in St. Petersburg, Florida. This gift will be held as a permanent endowment to be known as the (insert name) Endowed Fund, to be administered in accordance with Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation endowment policies for the benefit of (insert the program or purpose for which the gift is to be used).

If you plan to create such an endowment through your will, it is best to work with AFA's Development Office to draft a Memorandum of Understanding or other agreement that specifies in writing how your bequest will be used. This document will then be available upon the actual receipt of funds to ensure that your wishes are known and carried out.

The South Florida Alumni held a Spring Golf Gathering at the Miami Springs Golf and Country Club. This year, there were three

foursomes participating in friendly competition. One member of the group, David Bowser ‘80 had flown down from New Orleans to match up with his classmate Amed Paredes ‘80 who lives in Miami. Though there were only 12 participants this year, the concept has certainly caught‐on! The talk around the 19th Hole lunch table indicated that they needed to hold this event more than once a year. Amed Paredes suggested that the next golf event be at his Doral Golf and Country Club, and he promised at least a group of 30 AFA alumni from his and other classes that live in the Miami area. Richard DeWitt ‘65 suggested that the group meet more often, perhaps every month for some event such as cocktails and dinner. Everyone thought this was a good idea as

it has great potential for social as well as business networking. This year’s participants included Ramon Usategui ‘66, Teo Babun ‘66 and his son, Scott, Rudy Dominguez ‘78 Larry Schneider ‘64, Richard DeWitt, Jr. ‘65, and his son, Rick DeWitt, III, ‘87, Christian Chiari ‘92, Alumni President, David Bowser ‘80, Amed Paredes ‘80, and their guests, Hansel Rodriguez and Camilo Zas. Where in the world is Lorenzo?

One thing you can count on is that if an AFA Brother is coming to town for any reason, a crowd of his AFA Brethren will show up to give their support. Case at point, Lorenzo Lamas ‘75 has undertaken a new turn in his career. Known for his acting, this son of his famous Father, Fernando Lamas and Mother, Arlene Dahl has thrilled audiences for years on the screen and on TV. His new career is absolutely wonderful. Lorenzo has a phenomenal singing voice. Unlike many actors who try to sing, he has a tonal quality and pitch that is absolutely terrific. If Lorenzo had recog‐ nized this talent before now, he surely would have become the Frank Sinatra of his generation. His delivery was perfect. Clear, crisp annunciation, and definitely on key! The following evening CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr., Headmaster and I joined Ed and Wanda DeSeta at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach for his second performance. Again, he was absolutely wonderful and “Wow’ed” the whole assembly with his charisma! I’m trying my best to get him to come for our 75th Anniversary Homecoming and am even try‐ ing to get him booked for the week at the Trade Winds Resort. I am certain that in addition to his alumni brotherhood, the facility will be packed. Lorenzo has so many admirers, its surely a given!

New England Alumni Gathering in the Boston Area

Thank you for your patience. We conducted a survey concerning a New England Area Alumni Gathering. Our survey indicated we would have better attendance during the first week of June. Therefore, we are planning this event for the Boston Area on Friday, June 6, 2008. Many alumni have indicated they will attend but would like to be able to return home following the Gathering. Therefore the Gathering will be held during the mid‐morning hours. Please join us to learn of the exciting future in store for all Admiral Farragut Academy Cadets and Alumni as we approach our 75th Anniversary Celebration. You will meet the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees, George J. Michel ’49. Yes, that’s correct, an Alumni is now heading our school as we drive toward an exciting future. Mr. Michel is a retired Chairman & CEO of a multi‐national Fortune 500 Company and has over 38 years of experience in all phases of corporate management. Our dynamic Headmaster, Robert J. Fine, Jr. will also be on hand to meet you and relate the many changes underway since the restructuring of the Board. You will be happy to learn about the great things that are taking place to assure that AFA will continue to make an astounding impact upon our world. We will hold the Gathering convenient to an Inter‐State Highway at a hotel near the Logan Airport. We’ve been cautioned against holding it in downtown Boston due to the traffic and parking problems. As soon as we hear from you we will send the full details. Let us hear from you if you plan to attend! Send an RSVP email to: alumni@farragut.org or Phone 727‐343‐3678

Please help us get an accurate count of attendance. Email us if you can come: alumni@farragut.org.

WHY CELEBRATE 75TH ANNIVERSARY IN APRIL 2009? We are planning a grand celebration to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Admiral Farragut Academy. Our 75th Anniversary Celebration will be in the Spring of 2009, which is the closest time to the graduation of our 75th Graduating Class, thus closing out a quarter century of AFA education! Also, we don’t need to remind you of how the weather seems to be so erratic lately. Therefore, in order to prevent the normal uncertainties of the Fall Season, we are holding the 2009 Homecoming during the Spring. This time of year is particularly inviting as our beaches are truly beautiful. Our Major League Baseball Season is underway. Our daytime hours are warm (high 70’s and low 80’s), and our nighttime hours are still cool (mid‐60’s and low 70’s). It’s a great time to celebrate our great school and what it has meant to our World!

Some Food for Thought! This is from Frank Wendt ‘42 As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of groceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of his car up and a lady sitting inside the car, with the door open. The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty‐five feet away. I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm, walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too and took a few steps towards him. I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something. The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade and then turn back to the old man and I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying, "You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age." And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot. I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief and mop his brow as he went back to his car and again looked at the engine. He then went to his wife and spoke with her and appeared t o tell her it would be okay. I had seen enough and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight and as I got near him I said, "Looks like you're having a problem." He smiled sheepishly and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood myself and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me. Looking around I saw a gas station up the road and told the old gentleman that I would be right back. I drove

Page 31

to the station and went inside and saw three attendants working on cars. I approached one of them and related the problem the old man had with his car and offered to pay them if they could follow me back down and help him. The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared to be comforting his wife. When he saw us he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated engine) I spoke with the old gentleman. When I shook hands with him earlier he had noticed my Marine Corps ring and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, "What outfit did you serve with?" He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was over. As we talked we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechanics lower the hood. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet, but was stopped by me and I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card. He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket. We all shook hands all around again and I said my goodbye's to his wife. I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the station. Once at the station I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to

fwendt@aol.com

pay for the help, but they refused to charge me. One of them pulled out a card from his pocket looking exactly like the card the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then, that they were Marine Corps Reserves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given to me and I said I would and drove off. For some reason I had gone about two blocks when I pulled over and took the card out of my pocket and looked at it for a

long, long, time. The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his name........."Congressional Medal of Honor Society." I sat there motionless looking at the card and reading it over and over. I looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on this day, four Marines had all come together, because one of us needed help. He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage and an honor to have been in his presence. America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war. America is at the Mall.

We Need Your Support . . . Will You Help Us Cut Costs?

Page 33

To: All Alumni, This request is in the form of an open letter to ask for your support. We are constantly reminded by you how much you are enjoying the alumni newsletter, Reveille. After four and a half years, we are happy to report that we receive about 90%+ of your submissions via email. You are taking care of business on your end and are saving yourselves money by transmitting news to us electronically. We too have a need to take advantage of this electronic way of saving funds. But, the problem is that we do not have all of your email addresses. We need them in order to more efficiently cut costs that are continuing to rise all the time. For example, the rising postage and return mail expenses alone now approache the same cost as our printing. The trend is for both the printing cost and the postage and return mail costs to continue to rise. However, this is not true with respect to the transmission of a superior “full color” alumni newsletter. We have for over two years sought to have all alumni send us their email addresses so we can transmit the Reveille via email. As of the present time, we have nearly 1,000 email addresses in our database. Yet, we have a total of just over 4,000 records. This represents 25% of you who are helping us to stretch our budget, and still deliver a supe‐ rior product. The print edition is black and white. The email version is in color. You need to look at the archived editions of Reveille on line at: http//www.farragut.org/alumni. You will note that the Reveille’s open quickly, as they are all “pdf files.” If you don’t already have an Adobe Reader Program to quickly open “pdf” files, you can quickly download a FREE ADOBE READER PROGRAM from the following link: http://www.adobe.com/products/ acrobat/readstep2.html. This allows you to open any “pdf” file. System Requirements:

Windows • Intel® Pentium® III or equivalent processor • Microsoft® Windows Vista®; Windows® XP Professional, Home Edition, or Tablet PC Edition with Service Pack 2; Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4; Windows 2003 Server • 128MB of RAM (256MB recommended for complex forms or large documents) Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or 7.0, Firefox 1.5 or 2.0, Mozilla 1.7, AOL 9

Macintosh • PowerPC® G3, G4, G5 or Intel® processor • Mac OS X v10.4.3 to v10.4.9, v10.5.0 and v10.5.1 • 128MB of RAM (256MB recommended for complex forms or large documents) • 170MB of available hard-disk space Safari 2.0.2

Remember, you can print out any “pdf” file that you’d like to have on your printer. One very important thing to remember is that when you receive our email link indicating that Reveille is available to open, YOU NEED NOT OPEN IT UNLESS YOU WANT TOO! So, even if we transmit it to you, the choice is yours to open or delete. By participating with us and sending along your email address, you are helping us to take advantage of a cost savings to the Academy in the neighborhood of $30,000. Won’t you please help us? We have made it easy for you to transmit information to us over our website. Let us continue this process and send you the Reveille by an email link that you can choose to open and delete, rather than print and mail a hard‐copy. Of course, for those who do not have a computer, we will gladly continue to send you hard‐copy of the Reveille. Will you please help us and send us an update online and include your email address at: http://www.farragut.org/alumni. You can update your information online and we will save you time, stationary, and postage. Thank you for all that you do to support Admiral Farragut Academy and its Alumni Association. HOW DO YOU MEASURE THE WORTH OF A MAN’S LIFE?

The names above are a testament to what one life has meant to so many people. Mere words cannot describe what Coach Stanley Slaby has meant to all of these people. You can find out for yourself though by simply asking any of them what this man taught them about life on the fields of honor known as a football, basketball, and baseball. They will tell you it is not about winning or losing, but it is about how you learned about life as you played the game! These lessons mark Coach Slaby as someone who will be remembered as long as they shall live.

Let us pause to reflect upon our Alumni whose duty in this life has been fulfilled...May they Rest In Peace!

Carl J. Heydenreich ‘47N— We are saddened to notify you that we received a letter from Jeanette Heydenreich informing us of the passing of her husband, Carl on February 16, 2007. Though this was over a year ago, we wanted to pass this along to all of his classmates and friends. Carl was born on October 3, 1928 in Fairview New Jersey. His parents moved to Haddonfield New Jersey where he attended Catholic Schools. Thereafter, he went to Admiral Farragut Academy NJ where he graduated from High School in 1947. Carl’ s parents owned a Hair Dressing Shop in Haddonfield and Philadelphia . Mrs. Heydenreich told us, “Carl and I met while attending to Hair Dressing School. We Married to in 1951. Carl always had an interest in drawing . He enrolled Philadelphia Art Institute where he graduated . He did promotional work for many South Jersey Companies. He was a loving father to Carl H., the late Craig T. and Jean M. Opela and husband Todd. He was a devoted grandfather of four grandchildren Lindsay, Devin, Chase Opela and Victoria Heydenreich. He enjoyed drawing cartoons. He also enjoyed going to antique car shows. He took much pride in showing his award winning 1931 Ford Roadster which he named "Sapphire". Carl was loving, caring and very devoted to his family.” The last known address for the family is Atco, NJ. LCDR Valerie Wells— It is with deep sadness that we have to notify you of the passing of LCDR Valerie Wells on April 15. 2008, nearly a year after the passing of her husband Michael Wells. Valerie and Michael had both been members of our faculty for almost 10 years. Valerie was the Director of our Farragut Choir and the Drama Department. She has been responsible for the many wonderful thespian events that we have enjoyed over the years. She also was the advisor for our Cheerleaders, and was known for her outstanding support and leadership throughout the Farragut Community.. Valerie leaves three children, Jennifer Wells ‘04, Elizabeth Wells ‘06 BC, and Michael who is scheduled to graduate in 2012. Her husband, Michael was our outstanding Basketball coach who led his team to the State Championship in 2004. The entire Farragut Community will miss Valerie and the many contributions she made to the success of Admiral Farragut Academy. Rhett B. Sanders—Sadly, we bid farewell to CAPT Rhett Sanders who taught Physical Science and Biology at AFA for 30 years. CAPT Sanders will be missed by countless generations of cadets for his staunch classroom discipline tempered with humor, kindness and respect. CAPT Sanders retired in 1990 and after a couple of years living down the road from Farragut just off Park Street, he returned to his native South Carolina. At the time, he had a sister living in SC and wanted to be near her. CAPT Sanders was a widower. Though he has been missed now for over 7 1/2 years, the lessons he left upon his cadets will live for many a lifetime. God Speed, CAPT Sanders! April 20, 2008
