A YeAr to remember

could not have been more proud of Admiral Farragut Academy than I was during the week in April celebrating the 75th Anniversary. Yes, it was not Admiral Farragut Academy North nor Admiral Farragut Academy South, but Admiral Farragut Academy. The visit by the Captain from the USS Farragut (DDG-99), and crew members from both the new Farragut and the former USS Farragut, was arranged through the efforts of Howard Sakolsky, ‘47. The United States Navy Band, the Navy Jump Team, Brigadier General Charlie and Dottie Duke, ‘53, plus countless exhibits and events clearly established who we are, and where we are headed. This was also the year that gave us the class of 2009, and a gift that hopefully will set the tone for many years ahead. The class of 2009 established a scholarship fund in the Foundation to provide, in the future, tuition aid to bright, talented, promising and deserving students based on financial need. As that fund grows it will support future cadets and instill in them the great traditions and support of previous graduates.

Personally 2009 is also a special year, having entered Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach in 1944, and being part of the first group of cadets to open the school in St. Petersburg in 1945. At last year’s Homecoming, I celebrated with the Class of 1949, 60 years since graduation. As proud as I am of Farragut, the greatest pride, however, comes from being part of a distinguished Alumni Corps, composed of members who have contributed so much to this nation, not only by their recorded accomplishments, but by just participating and making a difference in so many areas, including the military, arts and sciences, academia, politics, athletics, social services, business and finance to name but a few.

Someone recently asked me what is so great about Farragut and why do I spend time and financial resources in support of the school? I could, and often do, cite all kinds of statistics, outstanding graduates and countless reasons, why Farragut is so great. Preparing young men and women to use technologies that have not yet been identified, George J. Michel, Jr ‘49 for use in jobs that do not yet exist, in order to solve problems we don’t even know we have, is not only stimulating, but Admiral Farragut Academy does it well. The opportunity to contribute to the welfare of this nation, by providing a full and well rounded education to the leaders of tomorrow is one worth taking.

the ocean depths to walking on the moon, as well as every walk of life. But, like you and I, Farragut’s life is clearly ahead of it. We stand at a point in time where we have the opportunity to make Admiral Farragut Academy “the” premier Secondary School in the country. How do we do this? It is simple. It takes commitment, interest, participation and financial support by the Alumni. The primary reason the Admiral Farragut Academy Foundation was created was to provide a workable framework for harnessing the energy, spirit and dedication of those who will support and provide the financial resources necessary to reach the goals and objectives and sustain the mission of Admiral Farragut Academy. By being interested in your school and its goals, and by supporting the school with any level of contribution comfortable for you, collectively we can not only be proud that we attended Farragut, but also take pride in the fact that we helped build an institution that will make a difference. Like the lift off of Charlie Duke’s rocket to the moon, we can lift Farragut to new heights for the next 75 years.

& StaFF FocuS Soaring Beyond Faculty Spotlight: LCDR Rob Ewing By: Mary Ellen Collins

someone understand something for the first time.” After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he found his calling when he took a job as a program leader for the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. It was the kids... “I called home at the end of my first day and told my mother I finally knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life,” he says. Ewing worked with middle school students on developing leadership skills, building self-confidence, and directing their energy in positive ways. He particularly enjoyed watching his kids change during their week at camp. “Most would come in like tough guys … many Rob Ewing was a child himself when he first understood the rewards of helping students. He read were in gangs … and most had never been outside of to younger students when he was in middle school, and the inner city. But after a couple of days you could in high school he helped tutor his friends who didn’t see them begin to relax and become kids again. Renaissance Man of the Sea Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Jack Ross By: Mary Ellen Collins If Dr. (Doc) Ross had followed his childhood career plan, he would have become a fireman. But thanks to a wife who didn’t want to marry someone with such a dangerous job, thousands of students over five decades have benefited from Ross’ passion for the sea. Ross set the foundation for his lengthy career by studying Earth Sciences at Central Connecticut State University (then called Teachers College of Conn). He taught in the Connecticut schools for several years, eventually chairing the Science Department and teaching Oceanography in the West Hartford Public Schools. After receiving a Master’s degree in Oceanography and Meteorology at Central Connecticut, the tireless teacher juggled two jobs. “I taught Oceanography in the public schools, and then when school got out at 2:20 I headed over to the University to teach Earth Sciences two nights a week.”

Doc’s mode of operation doesn’t include much downtime. He went on to get a Ph.D. in Marine Science Education from the University of Massachusetts and received numerous National Science Foundation grants to do research in Oceanography. During the early 1960’s, Doc worked as a “Teaching Scientist” at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research in St. Georges, Bermuda. During the 5 years he was associated with this world famous research station, he had the opportunity to meet Dr. Roger Payne, Dr. Robert Ballard, known for his research with Titanic, and Jacques Cousteau Sr. He wrote the cover story for the first issue of Sea World’s magazine; and has written and produced five educational oceanography films, one of which won first prize in the International World Wildlife Film Foundation contest. He also spent time working in Sarasota with John Ott, the “father of full spectrum light,” doing research on how light affects certain medical conditions. In the 80’s, CAPT Moriarty invited Ross to teach Chemistry and Physics at AFA. “I said, ‘No way, Jose! But how about Oceanography?” That led to his first stint in the Farragut (CONTINUED ON PAGE 7)

E = AFA2 Faculty Spotlight: Mary Louise Cookson Mary Louise Cookson is the latest addition to Admiral Farragut Academy’s Math department. She arrived on January 4 of this year as the Chair of Mathematics and hit the ground running! Board member Richard DeWitt ‘65 originally contacted Ms. Cookson as a result of a conversation that he had with his daughter who had taken a Math class from her at Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia. His daughter spoke very highly of her abilities and excellent teaching skills. As a result of that conversation, Richard contacted Ms. Cookson and explained the Academy was actively developing its STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and needed a seasoned professional to lead the charge for mathematics. It was there that he discovered that Ms. Cookson’s resumé not only included 26 years as a mathematics educator in both public and

private colleges and high schools, but a great deal more! She was involved in admissions for seven years; teacher education for fourteen, and evaluated student proficiency for placement into correct courses for almost twenty! During her nineteen years at Bryn Mawr she received the prestigious Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. “I consider this my Oscar award for teaching mathematics,” says Mary Louise. She is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers; and was named in The Insider’s Guide to Colleges as a “most popular professor.” “Richard is very persuasive no doubt,” says Mary Louise. However, the most compelling reason she came to the Academy was the students. “More than anything I love my interaction with students,” she says. “I couldn’t stand the thought of not having student interaction on a regular basis.” Mary Louise herself is a parent, with a twenty-nine year old son and a daughter who is twenty-seven. Her personal mission for the Math department is to make certain that each and every student leave (CONTINUED ON PAGE 8)

Digital Generation Faculty Spotlight: CDR Joe Sloan Joe Sloan bears the title of Chief Information Officer. But ask any faculty, staff member or high school student on this campus and they will tell you Commander Sloan is our life-line to everything that beeps or buzzes within our vastly expanding technoworld. Joe Sloan is not your typical “IT-guy” who lives to acquire the latest and greatest technical whizbang. “My goal is to make things simpler not more complicated. Simplicity usually leads to reliability, cost savings and legacy insurance,” says Sloan. Our goal at AFA is to escape from each individual computer being the keeper of documents, spreadsheets, stored data, and applications. Cloud Computing is the future for Admiral Farragut Academy. This means all applications and data storage become web-based and you are no longer tied to a specific vendor or solution locally. Computers become low cost, durable Internet appliances versus expensive, memory hogging machines. “Google Applications (Apps),” says Sloan, “and Gmail have revolutionized the way we work and communicate on this campus.”

“Two great benefits have resulted,” says Sloan. “No longer are we bound to one machine. And each year we are saving thousands of dollars by not having the cost of licensing fees affiliated with a network of machines using proprietary software, such as Microsoft products, nor the great cost of constantly upgrading hardware based upon the latest and greatest memory and speed demands of the latest version of the software.” These applications mimic their Microsoft counterparts, and are open source or free to educational institutions “It just takes a bit of getting used to,” says Sloan. For example, this article was collaboratively written by three people using Google Docs. In the years prior to coming to Farragut (11 years ago), Joe was an independent systems, services, (CONTINUED ON PAGE 8) 6

Ewing Continued... challenges and talk about our lives … and you could hear in their voices how special it was for them to have someone listen to them or to know the kid across the fire was going through the same things.” After a year and a half an opportunity opened to join the Farragut team, where he taught physics, physical science, anatomy, physiology, and one aviation elective during his first year. In eleven years, Ewing and Jose Hercher, math teacher and retired airline captain, have developed a comprehensive aviation program that includes staff-instructed flight training, and is available to middle and upper school students. Ewing now directs the Aviation Academy and has personally flown with more than 300 students. Not all students who take flight training pursue an aviation career, but Ewing believes the skills developed in the program will be an asset in any field. “I’ve always felt that when a student learns to fly a plane solo, it makes other challenges much

more achievable. Teaching them responsibility, and how to handle so many challenging things at once, puts things in perspective. Not many seventeen year olds know how to fly an airplane, and it gives them a higher level of selfconfidence and a tremendous advantage.” Ewing’s obvious enthusiasm for helping young people discover the world of aviation will no doubt leave a lasting impression on hundreds of young pilots, no matter what career they choose. He says he considers himself a success as a teacher if his students leave “competent and happy.”

Ross Continued... community, where he taught Oceanography for five years until moving to The Dana Point Marine Institute in California, and then on to teach Oceanography at the Kennesaw State University to be closer to his daughter in Georgia. He returned to Florida and to Admiral Farragut Academy in 2004. “I walked into Farragut, saw CAPT Fine and said ‘You want to hire an Oceanography teacher?’” An affirmative answer landed Ross right back where he loves to be – in the classroom and on the water. “Having access to the sea and the waterfront is a great way to teach Oceanography. I start every year by telling the students, ‘I never worked a day in my life. I went to a job every day and I got paid, but I didn’t work.’ I tell them, ‘You’re going to live a long time, so try to find a career you have a passion for. I think that’s what I’ve been doing all along – instilling the passion I have for the sea in the kids. And it seems to work.” Ross provides students with hands-on research

opportunities that help to develop critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills that provide a valuable foundation for any career. He’s particularly proud of the money they saved the Academy before dredging the basin. “CAPT Fine asked me to figure out how much mud was in there. My kids took core samples, and using laser beams and satellite photos, they calculated the amount of mud. It turned out to be only half of what the dredging company had estimated.” Former students who’ve gone into a variety of careers often credit Ross as being one of their favorite teachers, and for developing their interest and awareness in issues like global warming. Fifty years after graduating from college, Ross still finds his own learning opportunities everywhere he goes. And maybe that quality of being an enthusiastic lifelong student keeps him young. “I learned how to learn in college, but my most significant education has resulted from my life experiences,” he explains. “Farragut is the most exciting place. We have the STEM initiative here – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – and I’ve learned so much about computers and technology. My wife and I were just at school asking the media specialist to teach us some tricks with the SMART Board. I would never have these learning opportunities if I was not associated with Admiral Farragut Academy.

Cookson Continued...proficient in math, and to provide whatever is necessary for students to succeed. She is a strong proponent of mathematics leading to success in every walk of life. “I have seen it happen so many times and it is substantiated in study after study,” she says. “When mastered, math can be one of the greatest indicators of success. “Math skills will take you further faster.” She’s also a great believer in the analytical thought process which is fostered by math. The problem-solving skills which will serve students long after they’ve forgotten formulas is so pervasive. “With mastery of math, a student develops a brain that will work, regardless of the challenges presented.” Coming mid-year, one might think that Mary Louise would be at a disadvantage. “I listen very carefully to the concerns of parents, my colleagues, administrators, and most importantly--- I listen to my students.” Mary Louise strongly believes that the best ideas in education ultimately come from students. “I am also committed to putting into place academic support for mathematics education. Other than the time that each faculty member can give, there has to be a more elaborate structure of academic support for the mathematics courses which are currently offered.” Students are now tutoring each other and discussions of mathematics are a frequent occurrence. Only several weeks after Mary Louise’s arrival at AFA, eighteen students were inducted as charter members of

Mu Alpha Theta, the national high school mathematics honor society. Part of the regular requirements for our Mu Alpha Theta students is to actively be involved in tutoring those students who need more in-depth assistance. In addition, Mary Louise has enrolled Admiral Farragut Academy in the Florida Mathematics League, where our students have begun to participate in monthly competition tests along with other high school students across the nation. Mary Louise is committed to providing ongoing stimulation for her faculty members through professional development conferences. As a result, two of her math department colleagues will be attending the 2010 Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in Orlando. “I understand that if Admiral Farragut Academy is to excel as a STEM school, then mastery of mathematics by students at all levels and ability must be a top priority. I’m prepared to make that happen.”

Sloan Continued... and networking contractor for over a decade. Joe has worked with the Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA, Ryder International, The Corps of Engineers, the Army Missile Command Center and their sub contractors. Shortly after the Shuttle disaster, he was part of a project contracted to investigate the use of a computerized system for the inspection of the solid rocket booster seals of the Shuttle at a time when there was no such thing as a truly “portable” computer to perform the inspection task. He worked closely on the Patriot Missile defense systems

deployed during Operation Desert Storm. His role was to integrate the rack-mounted computer support module of those systems, so that it could sustain the incredibly abusive conditions presented by the hostile desert environment. Over the last several years AFA has found itself on the forefront of leading the movement towards more, rather than less, access to the Internet on campus. Says Sloan, “Many schools work incredibly hard to restrict students access to the Internet. We have found it to be much more productive to teach them how best to avoid the pitfalls and use the Internet for the wealth of information it contains.” "I am proud to be associated with an institution such as AFA, that is not afraid to be a voice of influence to our educational culture, to discover and use technology in the most cost effective manner. As educators, when we think we know all we need to know and are not willing to learn, we are of limited use to this generation as mentors for their future.” 8

n the surface today’s Admiral Farragut Academy might look a little different from what you remember, but rest assured, we are still one of our nation’s top JROTC college preparatory schools; proudly placing 32 young men and women into our nation’s service academies, and sending 77 to such fine schools as Cornell, Vanderbilt and The Citadel on ROTC scholarships in recent years.

Aviation Academy which are staffed and led by teachers who are experts in those areas. Mr. Jon Ducommun ‘09, for example, graduated the morning of May 16, 2009 from AFA. That afternoon, Mr. Ducommun took to the skies in his final check ride with the FAA and received his private pilot’s license. Jon had been a member of the very first Aviation Academy class, in which he engaged in flight and ground training three periods a day over the course of the year. The Aviation Academy offers curriculum for cadets in grades 8-12 , and is currently engaged in discussions with Embry-Riddle regarding a possible alliance.

Farragut issues each new cadet an Acer Aspire One Netbook with access to AFA’s “Google Cloud.” With nearly 95% of our 34 acre campus exposed to our private wireless network, each student has access to his online world from virtually anywhere on campus! Using Google as the backbone of our Internet infrastructure, we continue our “green” movement by using its mail and document services daily. This allows each student to communicate with his cloud (documents, calendars, contacts) from anywhere he is able to access an Internet connection. A student’s documents are no longer stuck on one computer and printed in order to be proof read or submitted to the teacher. With G-Docs, as they are called, a student can share his documents with his peers or teachers and allow them to either “edit” or “view”. This tool has allowed us to cut our paper consumption by nearly 75%! I am frequently asked why we have two distinctly different organizations involved in fund raising for the school and what is the role of each organization? Perhaps answering this question using the framework of and Who, What, and Where will offer clarity regarding the respective roles of the Academy and the Foundation. On the page to the right you’ll see a diagram that visually shows the process.

Bringing the alumni of Admiral Farragut Academy together and helping them to remain connected is the heart of our mission as the Alumni Association. We work to accomplish this through the events and programs that take place each year.

With the 2007-08 school year, the Foundation began its first efforts to initiate a series of Directed Endowment Campaigns. The first two such campaigns included the Board of Directors Academic Chair for Physical Science and the Rossignol Academic Chair in Science.

Heritage “100” Society Admiral Farragut Academy has stood for three-quarters of a century. During that time we have never wavered from our mission to instill the core values of integrity, self-discipline, perseverance and wellness & fitness in the lives of young men and women. We measure our success not by our own accomplishments, but that of our cadets. Our ability to continue to affect and impact each future generation is dependent upon the direct involvement of those who understand and value the Farragut Experience. Heritage Society membership indicates that Admiral Farragut Academy and/or the Foundation is included in the estate giving plans of a donor. Some will give through a simple bequest by way of their will, others will transfer the ownership of life insurance or still others will elect to use one of the many options available through various trust arrangements. The method is not as important as the decision. The Heritage “100” Society is designed to recognize the first-100 donors who have chosen to become Heritage Society members. I am a strong believer in the core “Farragut” values which have been instilled in each of us as members of the Alumni Community, and am looking forward to serving my fellow alumni in this capacity.

Currently, I have 3 daughters enrolled at Farragut, and one 2008 alumna, Amanda, who is now attending the University of South Florida and majoring in Political Science. For nearly 30 years I have lived in the greater St. Petersburg area, but it was not until Amanda graduated that I became involved with the Alumni & Development Staff. Our Alumni team relentlessly searches for information on “lost cadets” and continually creates opportunities to reunite class members. It is my goal to assist them in this effort.

uSS Farragut uPdate If you joined us on campus during our 75th Anniversary Celebration, you hopefully had the opportunity to meet CDR Philip Sobeck of the USS Farragut DDG-99 and members of her crew at a campus luncheon honoring the same. Thanks to the hard work of Howard Sakolsky ‘47, CDR Sobeck has remained actively involved with Farragut and her cadets ever since. In late Oct. 2009, CDR Sobeck invited our Armed Exhibition Drill Team to perform for the USS Farragut’s crew and guests. In December, accompanied by Command Master Chief C.J. Mitchell, CDR Sobeck joined us in Philadelphia for our Alumni Gathering at the Union League. Currently patroling the waters off South Africa and Somalia for pirates and terrorist threats, CDR

Sobeck recently sent photos to our 5th Grade Class who are following the USS Farragut in a program they call, “Where in the world is the USS Farragut”. Our gratitude, thoughts and best wishes are with CDR Sobeck and the entire crew of the USS Farragut.

radm mark buzby ‘75 cHange oF command October 16, 2009, while some alums gathered in St. Petersburg for our Annual Alumni Tailgate prior to the Football game, Robb Resler, our Alumni & Development Director and CAPT Tom McClelland USN (ret.), joined nearly 20 others in Baltimore to witness RADM Mark Buzby’s ‘75 Change of Command. Aboard the USN Comfort, one of the Navy’s two Hospital Ships, RADM Buzby accepted his change of orders and became the Commander of the Military Sealift Command operations. He was joined by many classmates, friends, family, and colleagues. It was an impressive event. We congratulate RADM Buzby for his accomplishments and thank him for his continued service.

Mr. John Joyce ‘70

ohn Joyce ‘70 has been employed at the Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, FL for the last 16 years. Boca West is the largest Country Club in the country. It’s # 1 in Florida and #1 in the U.S. in Community Living. These rankings are determined by a survey compiled by the Platinum Clubs of America. His responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing and organizing a diverse group of events such as: world class tournaments and exhibitions, the USTA French Open Wildcard, exhibitions with the # 1 Doubles Team in the World and Davis Cup players the Bryan Brothers, Sam Querrey, and legends of the game such as Jennifer Capriati, Aaron Kreickstein, Jimmy Arias, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Stan Smith, Fred Stolle and Owen Davidson. The tennis department hosts a variety of tournaments and special events for the Boca West members. Awards and achievements include: being a member of the USPTA since 1985 (United States Professional Tennis Association) where he holds a Professional 1 Rating. He has been awarded the Alex Gordon Professional of the Year in 2007, which is the industry's highest honor, at the World Conference on Tennis at Saddlebrook Resort in Tampa, FL. On top of that, he has been awarded the USPTA Florida Division Professional of the Year on 5 occasions 2001,2003,2005,2007 and 2009, as well as the USPTA Florida Division Facility Manager of the Year in 2000. Playing experience includes being nationally ranked in both the USPTA and the USTA in the Men’s 35’s Singles. Ranked # 1 in the Florida Section of the USTA in the Men’s 25’s and 30’s Doubles on several occasions. Other interests include strength training, running and Tae Kwon

Do, which he has been studying since 1984 and is a 3rd degree Black Belt, and is aspiring to be a Master. He has four wonderful and healthy children Chelsea 21, Alexis 15, Jack 13 and Nickolas 9, living in Hypoluxo, Florida. “I owe most of my accomplishments to the faculty and staff of Admiral Farragut Academy, which I attended from 7th to 12th grade. I will forever be thankful to Admiral Farragut Academy for giving me the tools necessary to succeed in both my personal life and professional career. John Viele, CDR USN (Ret.) ‘41“Pam, my wife of 58 years, passed away in 2005. I am the author of three books on the history of the Florida Keys published by Pineapple Press of Sarasota, FL. Am continuing to do resarch and writing on Florida Keys history.” Bob Conway ‘42- “I’m recovering from surgery to remove a benign tumor from my colon. I’m feeling well and resuming many hobbies and volunteer activities.” Richard Badger ‘46- “After leaving Admiral Farragut St. Pete attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME and Jackson College in Honolulu, HI. Spent 2 years ski-bumming in North Conway, NH and Stowe, VT and 3 years in Aspen, CO while bartending, stone masonry, ski patroling, etc. Served 3 years in the Marine Corps during the Korean war. After discharge went into the ski business as a manufacturers rep selling skis, boots and clothing throughout the US. Got into the real estate business 1958. Started up my own agency, Badger Realty in North Conway, NH in 1962 and have been at it ever since. Now have 28 employees, 2 offices and 1 partner. Also got married in 1962 to a lovely Canadian girl, Mary McCloskey, from Ottawa, Ontario, who provided me over the past 47 years with 4 sons and 8 grandchildren. Along the way my brother, Bob, and I got involved in ownership and management of a series of 15 ski shops under the name of Joe Jones Ski Shop or Sport Haus, scattered throughout ME, NH and Vt. In my spare time I did a fair amount of sailing, We have a 36’ Seawind Catamaran moored in Stuart, FL and now up for sale (any buyers contact me for info. I need a smaller boat for our summer place in Kennbunk, ME). Still skiing but mostly cross country skiing. Most of my non-working hours now are spent with my wife, sons, daughters-in-laws and grand children. It’s been a great life so far. Needed a

few repairs along the way (just got a new hip last month). I would to love to hear from any of my old (and I mean very old) classmates.” Charles (Chuck) Gottlieb Ruebel, Jr. ’49- “We retired from Florida to live in Oregon in 1998. Roberta and I have a two bedroom home in Hillside Continuing Care Retirement Community. We’re both active in Campus activities, local events and church. Help to create a weekly Community Dinner every Saturday evening and are currently serving around seventy persons a week. I fell in February of this year and broke my hip and was in a wheelchair for six weeks. All healed now and back in action on all fronts. Selected as Volunteer of the Year where we live at Hillside Continuing Care Community and for the State of Oregon. Helped to organize and start the weekly Community Dinner at the First Presbyterian Church in McMinnville for all who are hungry.” Sam Greenberg ‘50- “I am Retired and enjoying the weather here in Lake Ashton Golf community, Lake Wales, Florida. Just had surgery on rotator cuff so I cannot play golf at this time which is a bummer. I’m doing therapy which seems to be going very slowly.” “When we first came down here, I drove to AFA in St. Petersburg. As I was getting out of my car a couple of people asked me if they could show me around. I told them I was an alumni of AFA North graduated 1950. One of the men asked me if I knew George Rubin. Sure, I said, he

had been one of my roommates. With that the guy pulled out his cell phone, called George and I spoke to him after 50 years. George came down for business and stopped by to see us here in Lake Ashton.” James Moreton ‘52- “I‘m semi retired from farming. My wife, Eleanor, and I travel and enjoy our six grandchildren. Farragut Academy got me started sailing which has been a fascination and hobby ever since. We particularly enjoy the Caribbean Islands area.” Frank Harrison ‘53- “The year 2010 will be my 15th year in active service in the USCG Auxiliary. My first five years was at Augusta Georgia and USCG Sta. Tybee Island Georgia. The last ten years to present I am out of D5SR 1005 USCG Sta. Oak Island NC on boat crew operations and coxswain and attached to the USCG Captain of the Port MSO Wilmington NC and Sector North Carolina as Key Technical Advisor on Marine Firefighting for the USCG COTP. This last attachment involved organizing a Marine Firefighting Task Force for the state of North Carolina with all of the local land based firefighting services that have marine environments within their juristiction. Prior to North Carolina including the Port of Morehead City did not have any marine fire training or experience. At present North Carolina now has a marine firefighting facility and the NC Marine Firefighting Council. My position now is liaison between the council and the COTP and that of developing Me-

My second career was twenty-five years with Merrill Lynch, and I’m now attempting to improve my golf game. The young lady I dated while at Farragut and I have been married since 1962. Toni and I have been VERY fortunate!” John Coyne ‘57- “Betsy and I still have the time to take a spring cruise to the Caribbean (7) cruises so far, and summer and fall weeks in Pawley’s Island SC and Hilton Head SC. Next July we will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversery. I am still working with Coyne Sales LLC with my youngest son Bobby. Betsy and I have four children Tommy, Kelli, Bobby and Susan and (12) grandchildren. A group like that keeps Betsy busy and young! We had a great time at my 50th reunion (2) years ago and we look forward to next year coming down to see you all! I want to thank our Alumni office headed by Robb Resler Alumni/Development who keep us all working together.”

Michael Grimler ‘57- “I am still working with my youngest son to keep active and young at 71. Betsy and I enjoy our 12 grandchildren and all their activities among them school, all year swimming, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, flag football, band, and concert.” Stephen Hice ‘57- “I quickly learned that an unbuttoned pocket, out-ofplace collar-stay, un-shined shoes, missing a salute to an upper-classman or just being late to “mess” resulted in a demerit. Anything over 5 demerits per week required marching with a 9 pound rifle on Saturday during liberty - one hour for each demerit. Some serious offenses could result in up to 40 demerits. Of course, exceptional behavior resulted in merits that cancelled demerits. This was a great lesson for life (you learned the consequences of your actions.) GO AFA.” John Woodstock ‘58-’61- “Enjoying Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co. and USAF retirements in the North Georgia Mountains. Board member of the Union County, GA Historical Society and Commander of the Eastern Division, North Georgia Honor Guard.” Jon Arcuni ‘58- “I am retired from the garment and computer business and own a magnificent home overlooking the golf course of Valle Escondido in Boquete Panama. Myself and my wife Phyllis live here permanently at 3900 ft in wonderful cool weather. I keep a 26ft sport fishing cat in Boca Chica, Panama at www.gonefishingpanama. com. I have three daughters, a school teacher, a physician, and university student. I have three grandchildren. We are all well. In my class I remember fondly: Jack Mathis and his best friend, Adrian Munos, Larry Blau, The Stafford Brothers, Bruce Faucett, and Pate Snively. I remember sailing and fishing in Boca Ciega Bay. With distaste I remember Commander Steele who was disliked universally by the whole student body. Everyone else on the teaching staff was wonderful. My

John Van Winkle ‘58- “Retired-Dancing, Golf-VP of SAE House Corp. at University of Florida-Traveling- Married twice but single now-Date quite often.” Michael Moore ‘59- “I Graduated from AFA in 1959. Lived at the Naval Station Rota, Spain while my father was the Senior Medical Officer of the Medical Department on the Naval Station. I graduated from David Glasgow Farragut High School in June of 1963. I have 22 1/2 years of Naval Service (30 years including Fleet Reserve). I have served two tours of duty on board two aircraft carriers, one of which included a tour of duty of six months in Vietnam. The other one was a nuclear powered aircraft carrier and spent six months in the Indian Ocean. The latter was nuclear powered and I was part of the nucleous crew during final states of construction and outfitting. I finally got my college degree from the Governor’s State University at University Park, Illinois just before I retired from the Naval Service. I maintain residence in Germantown, Maryland and am currently living right next to the Naval Station Rota, Spain in El Puerto de Santa Maria right on the Fuentebravia Beach, facing the Bay of C·diz and the Atlantic Ocean. While at AFA, I was the Boat Dock’s Officer (ENS) for the Junior School while I was in the 8th Grade and taught the Junior School students boat handling. versary this month (Sept). Our two grandsons are now 9 and 4. We travel about the country each summer in our Winnabago Adventurer, with our BMW motorcycle strapped on the back. Still have teeth, hair, working extremities, and awaken breathing daily. Life is good. I saw photos of the terrible remains of AFA Pine Beach and it almost brought tears to my eyes

This on top of 25 terrific, challenging years in railroading, 1972-1997, with the good ol’ Atchison and Topeka and Santa Fe and its successors. Want to expand my horizons by now switching to the middle school or high school level, to teach Spanish and maybe French, and was wondering if any of the alums might have some advice for me as to how to be ready to teach the (teen)y’s after a decade of teaching the (tiny)’s. I had met briefly while at AFA reunion 2007 with people in your ESL/ Languages dept ... they had a phonics program with cards and tapes from a Florida based learning/educator group ... and cannot remember name of that program ... the colored flash cards sure looked enticing ... might you ask those kind folks for me what that program might have been? Tom Thompson ‘68- “Sherman, Texas – Point after attempts are usually considered to be mundane plays in football, but on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Apple Stadium it was an extra point that made history for the Austin College football team and placekicker Tom Thompson. That’s because Thompson, a graduate student at Austin College, is 61-years-old. By taking the field against Trinity on Saturday, Thompson became the oldest player in college football history. The 61-year-old kicker, who is in his second year at Austin College, ran onto the field early in the second quarter after the ’Roos scored on a 47-yard-run by freshman Phillip Gonzales, and drilled the extra point to tie the game at 7-7. Previously, the oldest player in college history was believed to have been Mike Flynt, who suited up for Sul Ross State University during the 2007 season. This past week on Wednesday my wife and daughter were visiting from Florida and we visited the Smithsonian.

Afterwards we went to a restaurant not far away and I met Mr. and Mrs. Steve Edwards- who were both dressed from head to toe on Farragut attire (and looked smashing, I might add). In introduced myself and we shared a table for dinner. During our talk Steve explained he was there with 10 cadets who couldn’t go home for Thanksgiving, for one reason or another, and he explained about some of the awesome events the cadets got to attend and see in DC. Sir, it made my heart swell to see that kind of care for cadets. I myself spent a lonely Thanksgiving at Farragut as a young teenager, and I know others from my generation who had nowhere to go either. The fact the school has had the forethought to provide a vacation for those less fortunate (by timing or whatever) is a real gift and I am proud of your initiative. From my dicussion it appears Mr. and Mrs. Edwards are perfect additions to the faculty, and should be commended for their hard work in making this event the success I am sure it was. It all ended with the peak of the year called “Recognition,” which is basically 72 straight hours of physical and mental hell. It feels good to have freedom these days, and with the class of 2013 visiting the school almost every other day, it really feels good knowing that I’m going to be an upperclassman in less than a month. A Message from Bill Masciangelo, Jr. Family and Friends, on January 2nd, at 7:00 am, Mom departed this life and joined my dad and other saints in Heaven. May she and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. She had been under full hospice care for the week prior to her passing. During the last two months she had an opportunity to enjoy a visit with her brother and great grandchildren during and after Christmas. She also fully participated in her 90th birthday (21 November), Thanksgiving Dinner and Christmas. It was such a blessing for her to be able to enjoy these events during the last weeks of her life; and also for me to have the opportunity to be with my mom during these last weeks and days. Mrs. Polly Slaby

Polly F. Slaby, 81, passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at the Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Stanley “Coach” Slaby. Upon her marriage to “Coach” she moved to the Toms River, NJ area with her husband, who had been appointed to the faculty at Admiral Farragut Academy. Polly worked at The Presbyterian Church of Toms River for many years. During the next 40 years they lovingly opened their hearts and home to Farragut’s cadets. Many of whom remained close with Polly and “Coach” throughout the years, often returning to visit with their extended families. Polly and “Coach” served the community in many areas, but their love and concern for the cadets of Admiral Farragut Academy was the cornerstone of their lives. Polly will be fondly remembered by all who experienced her love. In lieu of flowers, donations in Polly’s memory can be made to The Presbyterian Church of Toms River, 1070 Hooper Avenue, Toms River, NJ 08753. Mr. Lewis James Hammond, Jr. ‘42

Lewis James Hammond, Jr. died March 19, 2009, at the age of 85. Lew grew up on Long Island, where he graduated Garden City High School and Admiral Farragut Academy. Lew served four years in the Naval Air Corps. Lew was a three-sport athlete at Amherst and received the Howard Mill Mossman trophy for Athletic Excellence. From the late 1950’s to the late 1990’s, Lew lived with his family in Westford, Connecticut. he was an avid gardner, and enjoyed wildlife and working on the land. Lew cycled and played tennis into his 80’s. He and his family began going to Nantucket in the 1960’s and built their own house there in the 1970’s. He and his wife Nancy divided their time between Nantucket and Boca Grande, Florida. He is survived by his wife Nancy, by his four children, and his six granddaughters. 41

Mr. Duane Carolyne ‘52 With great sadness the family of Duane Carolyne, age 75, announces his peaceful passing on August 27, 2009. He was born in Youngstown, OH and moved to St. Petersburg, FL in 1946. He graduated from Admiral Farragut, was honorably discharged from the US Navy after which he followed in his grandfather’s footsteps into the Optical profession. After marrying his loving wife Peggy, in 1967, they moved their family to the Palm Beaches where he continued his successful career at Franklin Optical in the Palm Beach Mall. In 1977 he and his wife opened Optical Showcase at Oakbrook Square. Duane was an ASA Softball umpire, FHSAA football official, 32 Mason at the Amara Temple Shrine, and a member of the Moose. In Palm Beach Gardens he served as an active member of the business executives where he served two years as President. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Peggy; his devoted daughters, Barbara Levstek, Esther Lansaw, Kimberly Samuel, and son, John. He leaves behind a nephew, Russ Griffin and niece, Tracey Webster. He was also the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren.

Mr. Neil Hicks ‘63 Neil Hicks, age 64, of Parker, Colorado passed away peacefully with family at his side on January 10, 2010. Neil Hicks was born in Pensacola, Florida April 7th, 1945. He was the sixth child of Chester Sr. and Susie Hicks’ children to be born at home. He graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy, where he was a four-sport letterman in football, baseball, golf and basketball. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam. He left the Army and earned his Associate of Arts degree at Tallahassee Junior College. He returned to the Army and later earned a Bachelor’s degree at East Texas State University. By the end of his Army career, Neil achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 and retired in 1987. He went on to careers at Lockheed Martin and Kaiser Permanente and finally retired for good from Kaiser in 2007. Golf was a lifelong passion of Neil’s. What began as father-son outings and tournaments when he was young, became a lifelong vocation, one he passed along to his own son, Sean. Neil loved geode hunting and his four dogs, all part-Catahoula, a breed for which he had a particular fondness. Neil and Amy were married in 1986, and welcomed son, Sean, in 1987. Previously, Neil was married to Deborah Sanborn Hicks (1966) and together they had two daughters; Melisa (David) McNair and Teresa Rowland. Neil is also survived by his brothers, Edgar, Chester Jr., and Kenneth, and a sister Diana. Chester Jr. remembers his brother as “a heck of a nice guy. One of the finest men there ever was.” Neil was preceded in death by his parents and a sister who died in childhood.

Mr. Gustavo Rangel ‘83 “Saturday morning Gustavo Rangel was shot to death while shopping at a supermarket that was being robbed. He retired a Major from the Venezuelan Army in 2002 and was Chief Training Officer for Glock Corp Of Austria and President of Glock Venezuela. He was on his way to a shooting competition in the city of Maracay, Venezuela when he stopped at the supermarket not knowing there was a robbery in progress. Gustavo graduated in 1983 from Pine Beach.”
