As the cost of living in Canada continues to rise, both millennials and older generations are increasingly worried about their financial future. How did we get to a point where so many Canadians are asking, “How are we going to make it?” What’s wrong with Canada? Historically, Canada has been viewed as a model country, but the social fabric has frayed dramatically in recent years. The culture wars seen in Europe and the United States are now playing out here in extreme ways, leading many to wonder: How did we get here?

A Housing Crisis

To understand Canada’s cultural and political decline, one must begin by looking at economics. Over the past decade, ordinary Canadians have been priced out of affordable housing. In Vancouver, home ownership is out of reach for all but the top earners, with reports showing that the minimum annual income needed to buy a house is $246,100. Rents have skyrocketed too, decoupled from local incomes. In Toronto, where the median individual income is $39,200 a year, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $2,594 per month.

This math clearly does not add up, creating a level of ambient desperation that is unhealthy for individuals and society. This desperation is compounded by inflation, high food costs, and the rise of gig and contract labor, with more than a third of Canadians now precariously employed.

The struggle to make ends meet also contributes to social isolation, with many working long hours, leaving little time for friends, community, public service, arts and culture, or faith. These conditions impact Canadians’ ability to start a family, delaying the life cycle and contributing to a birth rate that’s been steadily declining since 2009. Statistics Canada has warned we are in danger of becoming a “lowest-low” fertility country, with a rapidly aging population that places stress on the labor market, health care, and pensions.

It is difficult to overstate the rage Millennials and Gen Z Canadians feel about the collapse of this social contract—and the resentment towards older generations who failed to preserve it. During the pandemic, Canada’s public policy exacerbated underlying tensions, protecting the well-off and those able to work from home while driving the rest to desperation. Long lockdowns and school closures polarized society further. In this combustible moment, Justin Trudeau triggered an election in 2021, making vaccine mandates a wedge issue. His actions, including deploying the Emergencies Act against protesting truckers, had devastating social consequences, ripping communities and even families apart. Canadian society transitioned from a tense society to a high-conflict one.

Understanding the dynamics of polarization can help us resist the spiral and break out of binary thinking. By focusing on more life-affirming pursuits and returning to debates with a fresh perspective.

from AUTOMOTIVE TO REAL ESTATE

Gregory Moore’s journey from the automotive industry to real estate is a remarkable tale of adaptability and passion. His transition from a seasoned automotive professional to a successful real estate agent showcases the power of following one’s interests and embracing change.

Gregory’s shift into real estate wasn’t a sudden decision but rather a gradual evolution influenced by his long standing fascination with the field.

“I was always interested in real estate. I had been a landlord, bought and sold properties, and followed the market closely,” he shares. Despite this keen interest, Gregory never saw himself becoming a real estate agent. It was the upheaval caused by recent global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and changing vaccine policies, that prompted him to make the leap.

“I lost my job at the automotive plant because of the circumstances surrounding the past few years. I felt like I was autonomous in real estate, which is similar to being an entrepreneur,” he explains.

The transition into real estate brought Gregory a sense of fulfillment he hadn’t anticipated. “It’s very fulfilling. I never thought I’d get my license and end up selling real estate, but it has been an incredibly satisfying journey.” He describes the shift as effortless, comparing it to drinking water. “It was just a natural fit for me. People naturally trusted my judgment, and it was something I felt comfortable with.”

However, the path wasn’t without its challenges. Gregory openly discusses the financial hurdles involved in starting a career in real estate. “It’s very expensive to get into real estate. Everything combined, including licensing and registration, totals around $10,000,” he reveals.

Overcoming these initial costs and establishing himself in a new industry required significant effort. “You have to build a reputation, advertise yourself, and find a brokerage. It’s a lot of work,” he adds. In a competitive market, Gregory emphasizes the importance of authenticity. “Dealing with people isn’t natural for everyone, but for me, it’s second nature. I’ve always loved interacting with people, and it’s a big part of what makes me stand out,” he says. His ability to build genuine connections and offer trustworthy advice has played a crucial role in his success. Gregory Moore’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and passion. His transition from the automotive industry to real estate highlights the value of following one’s interests and adapting to change. As he continues to thrive in the real estate market, Gregory’s commitment to his clients and his craft remains unwavering, offering inspiration to those navigating their own career transitions.

Turning a cherished hobby into a thriving career is a journey many dream of, and it’s more attainable than it might first seem. The process involves transforming your passion into a profitable venture, and it starts with understanding what makes your hobby special and how it can fill a unique niche in the market.

Begin by reflecting on what drew you to your hobby in the first place. Is it your love for crafting unique jewelry or your talent for baking artisan bread? Identifying what sets your hobby apart can help you position it effectively in the marketplace. For example, if you have a knack for creating custom home décor, you might focus on offering bespoke pieces that bring a personal touch to clients’ homes.

Next, start small. Share your creations with friends and family to gather feedback and refine your offerings. This initial testing phase is invaluable for understanding what resonates with your audience and what needs improvement. From there, consider expanding your reach by establishing an online presence.

Networking is another critical component of turning your hobby into a career. Engage with others in your field through industry events, online forums, and social media groups. Building relationships with fellow enthusiasts and professionals can provide valuable insights, offer collaboration opportunities, and open doors to new markets.

Persistence and adaptability are key to success. The transition from hobbyist to entrepreneur is often filled with challenges. Embrace these obstacles as learning experiences and stay committed to your vision. The journey requires patience and resilience, but with dedication, your passion can transform into a rewarding profession.

Ultimately, turning a hobby into a career involves a blend of creativity, strategic planning, and perseverance. By staying true to your passion and continuously working to improve and adapt, you can build a successful career that not only fulfills your dreams but also enriches the lives of those who experience your work.

How Home Staging Transforms Listings

Stacey Kelenjian has become a transformative force in the world of home staging and real estate. As both a seasoned home stager and a dedicated real estate agent, Stacey has carved out a unique niche, blending her talents to offer a comprehensive service to her clients. Her signature approach? Home staging on a budget, a selling point that has made her a sought-after professional in the industry. “I love staging because it has become who I am,” Stacey shares with a radiant smile. “When I walk into a room, I immediately know what I would change to make it better and different.”

This instinctive ability to envision potential is what sets Stacey apart. Her passion for staging homes is driven by a genuine desire to provide her clients with the best service possible, making every home look its absolute best. Stacey’s journey into home staging began as a natural extension of her real estate career.

“While working in real estate, I realized I could offer it all to my clients,” she explains. “I wanted to create an all-encompassing experience that would make selling their homes smoother and more successful.” This realization led Stacey to develop her unique approach to home staging, one that emphasizes affordability without compromising on style or impact.

Her love for blending colors and adding a touch of fun to her staging projects is evident in every space she transforms.

“I enjoy experimenting with different color palettes and incorporating playful elements into my designs,” she says. “It’s about creating a space that feels welcoming and vibrant, a place where potential buyers can see themselves living.” Stacey’s creative flair and attention to detail ensure that each staged home not only stands out in the market but also leaves a lasting impression on prospective buyers.

For Stacey, inspiration comes from a deep-seated drive to provide her clients with the best service possible. “I take inspiration from my clients’ needs and the unique character of each home,” she explains. “Every staging project is an opportunity to highlight a home’s strengths and minimize its weaknesses.” Her commitment to excellence and her ability to see beyond the surface enable Stacey to transform even the most challenging spaces into desirable properties. Stacey is also looking to expand her staging business into a bigger and better mission, one that extends beyond individual homes to benefit the wider community.

“I want to help those in our community when it comes to selling their homes,” she says passionately. “By providing high-quality, affordable staging services, I hope to make a positive impact on the real estate journey of many more families.”

Stacey’s approach to home staging is rooted in practicality and creativity. She understands that not every homeowner has a large budget for staging, so she focuses on making impactful changes that are cost-effective. “Sometimes, it’s about decluttering, rearranging furniture, or adding a few key pieces that make a big difference,” she explains. “You don’t need to spend a fortune to make a home look inviting and attractive.”

Success. It’s a term that has been defined by societal norms and expectations for decades. Traditionally, it has been synonymous with professional accolades, financial wealth, and social status. But in recent years, women have begun to reshape this concept, challenging outdated notions and creating new benchmarks for what it means to achieve greatness.

Gone are the days when success was measured solely by the corner office or the size of the paycheck. Today, women are redefining success in ways that encompass personal fulfillment, work-life balance, and societal impact. This broader perspective acknowledges that achievement is not just about reaching a destination but about the journey, values, and impact along the way.

Women are increasingly recognizing that success is not one-dimensional. They are prioritizing holistic well-being—balancing career ambitions with personal health, family life, and emotional fulfillment. This approach rejects the notion that professional success must come at the expense of personal happiness. Women are leading by example, showing that it’s possible to pursue one’s passions while nurturing relationships and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Authenticity is becoming a cornerstone of success. Women are challenging the pressure to conform to traditional molds and instead embracing their true selves. They are breaking away from stereotypes and defining success on their own terms.

This shift is reflected in the rise of female leaders who bring their unique perspectives and experiences to the forefront, whether in boardrooms, classrooms, or creative spaces.

Women are also redefining success by advocating for inclusivity and equality. They are using their platforms to address systemic barriers and champion policies that support diversity and representation. This inclusive approach not only benefits women but also creates more equitable opportunities for all marginalized groups. By driving change in this area, women are ensuring that success is not a privilege of the few but a possibility for many.

The shift in how success is defined is also evident in the growing emphasis on supportive networks. Women are forming communities that uplift and empower each other, sharing resources, mentorship, and encouragement. These networks not only help individuals achieve their goals but also create a culture where collective success is celebrated.

The redefinition of success is a testament to the evolving roles of women in society. By expanding the definition of achievement to include holistic well-being, authenticity, inclusivity, impact, and supportive networks, women are paving the way for a more comprehensive and inclusive understanding of success. As this new narrative continues to unfold, it offers a powerful reminder that true achievement is not about fitting into a predetermined mold but about creating a path that aligns with one’s values and aspirations.

Fartumo Kusow, a mother whose world was shattered by the tragic loss of her daughter Sahra Bulle, has turned her grief into a powerful tool for change. Sahra’s story, marked by 18 years of turmoil and ultimately ending in her murder by her partner, has ignited Kusow’s mission to spread awareness and foster dialogue through her podcast, Break the Silence, Build the Future.

“This podcast was born out of my grief after losing my daughter,” Kusow shares. “My daughter went missing on May 26, 2023, and 12 days later, her husband of 18 years was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Grief is different for everyone, and I found my voice in this podcast to share my experience and encourage others to do the same.”

After Sahra’s death, Kusow’s grief transformed into a resolve to break the silence surrounding domestic violence. “I needed to talk about this,” Kusow says. “I wanted to respect Sahra’s privacy, but now I realize that sharing our story is crucial. If we remain silent, we perpetuate the cycle of violence and secrecy.” Kusow’s podcast aims to shed light on the realities of domestic violence and offer support to those affected. “The title of the podcast reflects my goal to break the silence and build a future where such violence is acknowledged and addressed,” Kusow explains. “We need to talk about these issues openly so individuals in similar situations can find the strength to seek help.”

One of the most poignant messages from Kusow’s podcast is the importance of recognizing the signs of abuse. “People often tell us who they are, but we choose not to believe them,” Kusow notes. “Abuse isn’t just physical; emotional and psychological manipulation is just as damaging. It’s crucial for people to understand these signs and know that they are not alone.”

Kusow also addresses the systemic issues that contribute to the problem. “The healthcare and legal systems often fail victims of domestic violence. They are not equipped to handle the complexity of these situations,” she says. “We need to push for systemic change and better support for both victims and frontline workers.”

In her quest for change, Kusow is actively involved in advocacy and education. “I’m organizing an annual conference in partnership with the University of Windsor called the ‘IAMSAHRABULLE Conference,’” she shares. “The goal is to educate young people about recognizing and addressing domestic violence.”

Additionally, Kusow has established a foundation in Sahra’s name to support local shelters and organizations that provide crucial resources to victims. “Many shelters operate on donations and struggle to meet the needs of those seeking refuge. My foundation aims to provide financial support and raise awareness about the gaps in the system,” Kusow explains. Hiatus House, a critical resource for those affected by domestic violence, echoes this call for action. Last year, Hiatus House sheltered over 500 women and children and answered over 3,000 calls to their crisis line. Sylie Guenther, the executive director, emphasizes, “We work in support of women and their children and families to live lives free of violence. Hiatus House offers crisis and shelter support, programming for children who witness violence, group counseling for women rebuilding their lives, and transitional housing and court support. Currently, we are raising capital funding to develop transitional housing where women can live with their children in a safe environment while they re-establish themselves independently.”

Guenther highlights the often subtle nature of abuse: “Abuse often starts very subtly, and those experiencing it may not realize what is happening until it is too late. If you are questioning whether you or someone you know might be going through an abusive situation, don’t hesitate to contact Hiatus House at 519-252-7781, or visit our website for information. We offer safety planning, support, and resources for those in situations of abuse.”

Kusow’s podcast and advocacy work are driven by a deep commitment to ending domestic violence and supporting survivors. “I hope that by sharing our story and breaking the silence, we can create a future where everyone feels safe and supported,” Kusow concludes. “This mission is about honoring Sahra’s memory and ensuring that her tragedy can help others find their path to safety and healing.”

Through her podcast, Fartumo Kusow is not only honoring her daughter’s legacy but also fighting for a future where domestic violence is confronted openly and addressed with compassion and efficacy. Join the conversation and support her mission with #iamsahrabulle.

In the heart of Windsor, Ontario, a fashion revolution is quietly taking place. At the forefront of this movement is Mena Biafora-Vincelli, the visionary behind Style Me Mena. Her passion for fashion and dedication to helping others feel confident and empowered through their style has garnered her a loyal following and made her a sought-after stylist in the region.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the transformative power of fashion,” Mena explains. “It can boost one’s self-esteem and mood, and I wanted to harness that power to help people discover their unique style.”

This deep-seated belief in fashion’s ability to transform lives led Mena to start Style Me Mena,

a styling service designed to educate and empower individuals to make confident style choices. Mena’s mission is clear: “I want to empower individuals to discover their unique style and feel confident in expressing themselves through fashion. Fashion should be inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of age, size, gender, or budget.”

This ethos is reflected in every aspect of Style Me Mena, where personalized styling services cater to each client’s individual needs, preferences, and lifestyle.

Windsor’s relaxed, laid-back vibe profoundly influences Mena’s approach to styling.

“With its riverside parks, waterfront trails, and vibrant outdoor festivals, Windsor embraces a casual and comfortable lifestyle,” she says. “I prioritize looks that exude effortless coolness and comfort.” This might mean incorporating versatile pieces like denim jeans, cozy sweaters, and stylish sneakers perfect for exploring the city

or hanging out with friends along the riverfront. The city’s multicultural community also plays a significant role in shaping her styling approach. “Windsor’s diverse cultural influences inspire me to infuse outfits with pops of color, unique patterns, and playful accessories,” Mena adds. “It’s all about capturing the city’s laid-back charm and celebrating its diverse cultural heritage through fashion.”

Tailoring her styling services to fit each client’s unique body type and personal style preferences is at the heart of Mena’s work. The process begins with an initial consultation to understand the client’s body type, style preferences, and lifestyle. “Understanding the client’s body type is crucial for recommending flattering clothing choices,” Mena explains.

“I also delve into their personal style preferences by discussing their favorite clothing items, colors, patterns, and overall aesthetic.” Mena’s approach is holistic, often involving a closet assessment to evaluate the client’s existing wardrobe. This allows her to identify key pieces that can be incorporated into new outfits and pinpoint any gaps that need to be filled. “By maximizing the use of items they already own, I help clients build versatile and cohesive wardrobes,” she says.

For Mena, staying updated with the latest fashion trends and styling techniques is essential. She regularly reads fashion magazines, follows social media platforms, and attends fashion shows to stay informed. “Social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok are invaluable sources of fashion inspiration,” she notes. “I also conduct regular market research to understand consumer preferences and emerging trends.” Her advice for individuals looking to enhance their personal style is simple yet profound.

Know yourself and define your style aesthetically,” Mena advises. “Invest in wardrobe essentials, experiment and take risks, and focus on fit. Most importantly, stay true to yourself.”

As Style Me Mena continues to grow and inspire, Mena Biafora-Vincelli remains dedicated to her mission of empowering individuals through fashion. Her passion, vision, and unwavering commitment to inclusivity and self-expression make her a true trailblazer in the styling industry. “Fashion is a form of self-expression and empowerment,” she concludes. “Everyone deserves to feel great about how they look.”

BECOME A PART OF OUR STUDENT ART CORNER

Join us at Fashion and Beauty United as we celebrate local talent in our Student Art Corner. From budding artists to creative visionaries, we're shining a spotlight on the vibrant creativity of our community's students and artists.

When Audia Eastwood-Strachan and her family relocated to Windsor in the early 2000s, they found a town with few salons catering to the needs of people of color.

Determined to fill this gap, Audia, a seasoned beautician with nearly 30 years of experience, saw an opportunity to create a space that celebrated and specialized in black hair textures.

“After working in a barber shop/salon for two years, I knew it was time to establish my own salon,” Audia recalls. “We searched extensively for the perfect location and eventually came across a place that was about to close down. We decided to move in, renovate, and make it our own.”

Located at 3829 Tecumseh Rd E, Windsor, Unbeweaveable Salon opened its doors in March 2005. The name of the salon was crucial. Despite numerous suggestions, Audia’s preference for “Unbeweaveable”—a nod to her weaving expertise—was overruled by her daughter’s input.

The unique name proved to be both memorable and effective in attracting clients.

“Choosing the name was a significant step for us,” Audia explains. “We wanted something that would clearly communicate our specialty in black hair. The name Unbeweaveable not only stood out but also resonated with our clients.”

In 2011, Unbeweaveable Salon relocated to a larger, more central location, allowing Audia to expand the salon’s offerings and add a retail component. This move enabled them to provide a wider range of products and services, including haircuts, coloring, hair pressing, relaxers, weaves, braids, and natural hair styling like twists, locs, and rod sets.

“The expansion was driven by our growing clientele and the desire to offer more to our community,” Audia says. “With the retail addition, we can now cater to walk-ins looking for products like braiding hair or edge control, and continue to serve our diverse clients effectively.”

Audia’s journey began in Scarborough, Ontario, where she was exposed to the vibrant 90’s black hair and fashion scene. Graduating at the top of her class from Topaz Beauty College, she combined her technical skills with creativity to craft striking looks for her clients. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to further her education in Business Administration at the Toronto School of Business.

Now, as the proprietor of Unbeweaveable Salon & Supply Inc., Audia manages a growing business that employs three staff members and continues to expand its retail entity. Her dedication to her craft is reflected in her ongoing pursuit of advanced technique classes in

barbering, coloring, wig application, and natural hair care.

Recently, Audia launched SWORLS—an initiative aimed at promoting love for natural hair textures and educating the community on maintaining healthy hair. Inspired by her daughters and the shifting preferences away from relaxers, SWORLS represents Audia’s commitment to empowering individuals to embrace and care for their natural hair.

“The growing demand for products tailored to natural hair has highlighted the importance of education,” Audia says. “SWORLS is my way of helping people celebrate their natural textures and maintain healthy hair. It’s about embracing who you are and taking pride in your natural beauty.”

From its humble beginnings on Tecumseh Rd E to its current success, Unbeweaveable Salon stands as a testament to Audia Eastwood-Strachan’s passion and dedication. Her journey reflects a deep commitment to her clients and the community, making her salon a cherished destination for anyone seeking expert care and a welcoming environment.

In the world of psychological thrillers, few authors captivate with the raw intensity and masterful suspense as Krysta Miceli, also known as K.G. Miceli. Her latest work, “I’m Still Here,” promises to enthrall readers with its intricate plot and chilling twists. As Miceli embarks on this new chapter in her literary journey, she reflects on her evolution as an author and the personal experiences that shape her writing.

“I’m Still Here” is not just a book; it’s a testament to Miceli’s lifelong passion for the genre. “I’ve been writing scary stories since I was a kid,” she shares. “I was always into horror movies and thrillers. This book has been in my mind for years. I finally decided to put pen to paper and bring it to life.”

When asked about the inspiration behind her latest psychological thriller, Miceli admits that summarizing the book without giving too much away is a challenge. “It’s really hard to explain without revealing too much,” she laughs.

“The book is a psychological labyrinth. If I had to sum it up in a sentence, I’d say it’s a ‘mindshake.”

The creation of this book was not without its hurdles. Miceli speaks candidly about her struggles with writer’s block. “There were times I’d be blocked for a year,” she recounts. “I’d have to put the book down and come back to it. Taking breaks and giving myself time to clear my mind was crucial. It’s important not to force the process if you’re not feeling inspired.”

Balancing a writing career with family life is another challenge Miceli navigates. As a mother of three, she finds her creative time in the quiet hours after her children are in bed. “It’s not easy, but I make time when I can. My kids are my motivation, and I try to write when I have the quiet to focus,” she explains. Her youngest son, Able, even inspired a previous book, The Adventures of Able Source. “Able helped me come up with the storyline. He loved the book when it was done.”

Miceli’s personal experiences, particularly the grief from losing her son to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), have profoundly influenced her writing. “The loss and grief drove me to write,” she reveals. “I wanted to leave a legacy, to ensure that something of mine would remain long after I’m gone.”

Her earlier works, such as Into the Nothing and Angels Above Us, reflect a range of genres and themes, including grief and mental illness. The poetry collection Angels Above Us was particularly close to her heart, created in memory of her son and in collaboration with other grieving parents. “It was a way to keep the memory of loved ones alive,” she says. “Reading other people’s poems and feeling their pain was difficult, but it was important.”

As she looks back on her journey from Into the Nothing to I’m Still Here, Miceli notes her growth as an author. “I think my ability to foreshadow and engage readers has improved. Each book helps me refine my craft,” she reflects.

With “I’m Still Here” previously released, Krysta Miceli continues to weave her unique blend of suspense and psychological depth into her storytelling. Her journey from a young horror enthusiast to a seasoned author is a testament to her passion and perseverance, proving that even the darkest experiences can fuel the most compelling stories.
