TOMAS MAIER’S INSPIRATION 9. What are your main sources of inspiration when designing clothes? I’m inspired by many things--by art, architecture, antiques, music, and of course, the things I have seen in my travels and encountered in my life. 10. You have worked for several fashion houses, Hermès, Sonia Rykiel? How did this influence your way of creating? I’ve taken something different from each place that I worked. From Sonia Rykiel, I learned the importance of believing in your own vision. From Hermes, I saw the importance of tradition and quality, and learned that luxury products are not only shaped by passion but also by patience. For a young designer, it was an invaluable education. 11. When and why did you decide to become a designer?

I was quite young, maybe 15, when I decided to pursue fashion. I applied to study at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture and left for Paris as soon as I finished high school. 12. Do you have any sources of inspirations other than fashion? Art, music, architecture, paintings? All of the above. In fact, I find fashion a less satisfying source of inspiration. I would rather go to a museum, a gallery show, a concert, or see a film. 13. Do you get your inspiration mostly from modern or classic elements? I need both in my life. I am as moved by a Holbein drawing as by a Twombly. 14. Who are the artist, architect or sculptor that you particularly like or admire? There are many, from masters including Cranach, Dürer, Holbein, Zurbaràn, and Velazquez to contemporary artists such as Ruff, Struth, and Gursky.

There is no other brand that focuses as completely on the product.

Who are we? “Arabs, for example, are thought of as camel-riding, hook-nosed, whose undeserved wealth is an affront to real civilization”. Edward W Said, Oriantalism. Well, quite a thought that many personas are love holding on to. In the meanwhile, the Orient has been and still is an authentic civilization that is raising closer to modernism on daily bases. Fashion Arabia, thereby is taking steps forward to introduce the glamorous, most artistic, and well embellished side of Arabia. In our first issue we wanted to start with the beloved petite Island and showcase our 24 carats Bahraini gold and unique pearls. In the coming pages; we are introducing our beloved readers to kinds of talents Bahrain has produced, each in different Art sectors, different ages, and absolutely different concepts. Each one of the Female artists we are presenting has a beautiful story behind developed to create an interesting reality.

Who are we presenting on this issue? We are having two fashion designers, an artist and multi collections creative, and a clutch designer. These women combine the spirit of old days femininity with sonorous modernity. They all are carrying the Khaliji pride in heritage and culture, celebrating the success of harmonious marriage of their past and present. From Delmon, the land of twin waters, the paradise of Gilgamesh epic we introduce Amina Alabbasi, Amal Al Mulla, Kubra Qaseer and Noof. While shooting for the pages of Fashion Arabia and running a one on one interview with these brilliant ladies, we have had in mind about painting a contemporary canvas, linking these absolute talents with the global market, therefore we mixed and matched their pieces with international high end brans as well as high street brands.

Let’s get inside though their journey of success.

AMAL ALMULLA From the doorways of Amina Gallery to the so chic doorsteps of Amal Al Mulla’s office, we are introduced to a rising up fashion designer. Majored in fashion designing and blogged along anonymously, Amal managed to distinguish herself among so many talents in the regional market and she succeeded. Pastel hues, delicate layering, and soft embellishments – your pieces reflect the romanticism in a way. Would you consider your-

self a romantic? If so, what lead to that? I think there will always be that aesthetic of romanticism involved in all my work, in the brand and in myself. Whenever I start off designing, that essence of romanticism tends to follow, it’s always been in something like to wander or to lose yourself and to escape to an unfamiliar place, or to just dream. And from there, it just makes it’s way through out the whole concept and design details and lays hints of that romanticism feel I start off

with within each piece. Would you ever attempt the venture into menswear? Maybe create pieces with the same niches in a masculine perspective? Since the brand is a women’s wear brand, I’ve been very much focused on establishing that, I don’t think I’d venture into menswear since it’s not really something I see myself personally doing, but time changes, ideas change, so I guess it’s a never say never situation

SABAH CENTURY’S FASHION PIONEER

hoenician by root, Labanese to the bone and a genuine legend. Coming from Bdadnoun village carrying her pride in a hand and her dream in another. Released her first album at the age of 15 where her star sparked, soon after she was standing in front of one of the most

important Egyptian female directors Asia Dagher in ‘The Heart Has Its Reasons’. ‘Ahla Behal Talle’, ‘Zai El Asal’; and ‘Sa’at Sa’at’ and many more songs generations grew up listen to. Sabah El Shahroura the Empress of the Lebanese song, is one of most influential Arabian fashion icons. She was a trend setter, men adored her and women idealized her. Sabah witnessed every fashion era, she was a teen in the 40’s, young lady in the 50’s and the 60’s and an elegant woman, with a fashion statement through the rest. She always knew what suited her. Sparks, colors, big stones and chiffon were her bling to go. She held on to her golden big hair throughout her journey. Accessorizing was a priority, from head to toe. Sabah adopted ubiquitous clean dresses complementing with pearls in most of her movies, and overdressing in her daily life. Colorful, beaded, embroidered garments, with head pieces and over size hats were her summer image. Whilst, Boots, from ankle boots to high boots, waist coats and wool shawls were her winter image. Sabah tended with the waves, making sure she would land fashionably safe. Her identity was always present no matter what the ‘IT’ was. Designers raced to her paying their respect and pledging their loyalty. Each wanted her exclusively, she did support most her time designers, names did not make any differences to her, designs only mattered. Sabah did not make friend with hatred nor grudge, she was peaceful, respectful and carried a heart molded with gold. She has overcome old fashioned societies that were against female taking art as a career. She never cared about their opinion and did pave her journey with courage and enthusiasm.

JOELLE MARDINIAN A CLOSER LOOK INTO A TELEVISION BEAUTY

W

What drove Jeolle to Grease Paint Make-up School in London; what was the inspiration or influence behind it? - My mum is a makeup artist, so I’ve been influenced by her all my life. But also I think its not just influence, its something I’m born with. Ive always loved makeup, I’ve always loved high heels. My mum has never worn high heels, I’ve never ever in my entire life seen her in high heels because she is very tall. So I used to wait until I go to my grandma’s house, and I used to go around in her high heels. So loving everything that is about femininity is something I’m born with. When ‘Bel Saraha Ahla’ was first aired, we were like AMEN, because finally someone is going to tell the truth? How it all came to you? - Well I used to watch a TV show in the UK called “What Not To Wear” and it was run by two editors in chief of a fashion magazine, and I used to always be mesmerized how the girls changed in the end. But what also annoyed me that their hair and makeup changed, but they never told us or spoke to us about the process. The entire show was only about the clothes. So when I came to do my show, I suggested to MBC that I show the entire process. Because people in this region, they really want to know the truth about how they can change their hair color haircut, probably adding extensions, maybe adding eyelash extensions, henna. How the process is being done. That’s probably why the show has been so successful, and it has beaten all other shows in the world. Im really happy to say that Joelle’s show has been on TV for 11 years, and it has been the longest raining makeover show in the world. Fashion forward beauty artist with courageous hair dyes, how you choose your fashion? - I like to express myself, and that’s how I express myself. Im someone super girly, even though I own a lot of black clothes, but I also love a pop of color. I use a lot of colors in my sunglasses, my bags, my shoes and I guess my hair. I loved being pink, when I first dyed my hair pink I really felt like I was born with it, when I looked at my pictures as a blonde or a brunette, I tell myself “my god who is she?” I couldn’t actually relate to my old pictures, I felt like pink was me. And then when I did my hair blue its weird, I look in the mirror and I think that’s so normal, I don’t think it’s a crazy color or something that’s outrageous. I really enjoy looking and being

different. I get bored of myself, and I’m not someone who likes to go under the knife. I have had botox and fillers done but only as little as its needed. I look at others who are obsessed with plastic surgery and I think they look awful, so its not something that I like to do. Dying my hair doesn’t change me, it just feels like an accessory and our hair is an accessory, that’s why we can cut our hair, we can grow it, we can style in whichever way, so our hair is an accessory that we can play around with as much as we like and then whenever we’re bored we go back to the natural state. Not very long ago, you have launched your facial and hair care products, who can include your products in their care routine? - I designed my skin care line and hair care line for the region. I have to say I was shocked when I came to the UAE, to know that women only spent 10% of their entire beauty budget on skin care. Were it was actually the other way around when I lived in the UK; perhaps women spend the 70% on skin care. Skin care has always played a big part of my life. My mum introduced me to skin care at the age of 14 years old and I’ve been blessed with that advice from my mum because today my skin is clean, healthy, I don’t mind going out without makeup on. I even take lots of videos and pictures on instagram, whatsapp, snapcht, without makeup. So I don’t have the fear of going out without makeup because I always take care of my skin. I produced joelle paris skin care to go for all skin types and different age groups. I want every single Arab lady to be able to try my skin care, and my skin care is all about cleansing, hydrating, and protection, its all you need to have great skin. Of course im also working on a new line with new products and they will soon be available. As for the hair care line, I have Maison de Joelle, I have 9 salons and my hair care line is a professional line that caters exactly the needs for the local ladies, giving them a solution for their hair problems. What is your number one beauty product? wash away from joelle paris What are some vital make-up tips that every woman should know? the most important part is actually having good skin. Because if you apply makeup on any sort of bad skin that has pimples, dryness, etc. you really wont have a great makeup finish. I personally use good night cream as a base, especially when I have studio because I film sometimes from 12-16 hours under very strong lighting and I want my makeup to last me all Fashion Arabia Magazine • www.fashionarabiamag.com • 35

36 • Fashion Arabia Magazine • www.fashionarabiamag.com

these hours. So to make sure that my skin is very well hydrated and doesn’t dry out under the lights, I use the good night cream because its richer than the rescue me. And I also believe in using good makeup products, of course everyone knows im the creative director for max factor and I’ve been using their products since I’ve been 16 years old in the UK. Most of the products I use are from max factor. I think its really important to find a foundation that suits your skin type. There are many foundations in max factor or any other brand and they all differ to give you a different finish that you want. For example you can find a foundation in max factor that’s called all day flawless, it’s a 3 in 1, it has primer, foundation, and concealer all in one and its perfect for all skin types. They also have foundations that are oil free which are perfect for people with greasy skin. So my advice is know what your skin type is and choose the right foundation for your skin type. Through the first years of business versus now what have been the most intensive changes you have noticed? When I first started running and creating the brand Maison de Joelle, I thought life couldn’t get busier because I was juggling with being a mum, running a weekly TV show that never stops and of course the salon business. And then my ambition went beyond that and then I started developing Joelle Paris, which took me 4 and a half years to launch. Then I added clinica joelle which has been so successful and its been an incredible experience for me to be working with talented doctors and to see the magic they can do. So all in all my career has been actually great but it needs a lot of my time. My life has changed I mean if I look years ago and how I used to spend a lot of time with my family and cousins and friends, and being able to go out is all in the past right now. I save all my time to be with my children because I don’t have much time and I make sure that

the summer holidays now are only taken up with my children You are a business woman, beauty artist, social media sensation and a gorgeous mom, how you manage them all at once? - Well maybe I just answered that in the previous question, like I said I work many hours and I travel a lot, and during the week when I don’t see my kid I have no guilt at all because I make sure that in the weekend im all theirs. The way I do that is, my employees have become my friends and my very best friends understand that im not available all the time to be socializing with them and they come and join me at home to have quite time with me and my children. So I work all year around, very long hours. Weekends are for my kids unless if im traveling, promoting joelle paris or anything else and then he holidays are spent with my children and that’s how I guarantee to have quality time. What make-up tool is your favorite? - A concealer because I can use it under the eyes, I can use it also as a highlighter to bring out my cheek bones. I can highlight all the dark areas in my face like under my chin, nose. And I have any little blemish I can also hide that. So I don’t always need to use a foundation but a concealer can actually do the job.

Using MAX Factor products since I’ve been 16 years old in the UK
