The Slogan T-Shirt The slogan t-shirt has become the become the celebrity’s weapon of choice in order to make a statement without saying a word(Galmour,2017). It has begun to rise as one of the biggest trends of spring/summer 2017 with designers such as Michael Kors, Henry Holland and Dior displaying this look on their catwalks and targeting generation Y. This has also led to the high street interpreting the trend and helping it target generation Z. Figure 1(Elmeri,2016)

Catwalk Trends One of the main trends to come from the Spring/Summer 2017 fashion weeks is the slogan t-shirts. The slogan t-shirt has helped to create attention from the designers and pass on messages to the public for instance Steff Yotka from Vogue said “Take the political sloganeering of this election cycle and add in fashion’s current love of merch and you have this season’s boldest trend: the slogan T-shirt”. Catwalk shows target generation Y rather Z due to how the older the generation is the more able they can afford the luxury clothes.

Effects on Society The slogan t-shirt has helped to create attention from the designers and pass on messages to the public e.g. Steff Yotka from Vogue said “Take the political sloganeering of this election cycle and add in fashion’s current love of merch and you have this season’s boldest trend: the slogan T-shirt”. Catwalk shows target generation Y rather Z due to how the older the generation is the more able they can afford the luxury clothes.

Political Trends The slogan t-shirt has played a major role in providing a history of protest and political scoring(Townshend,2016). Politicians use the slogan t-shirt as it helps to gain attention from generation X and Y targeting the older generation. For example when Caroline Lucas wore the t-shirt stating ‘No More Page Three’ which provided her with attention and a lot of media coverage leading to the public talking about this issue.
Slogan tops were also featured in the US elections for example “Bern Baby Bern” and “Hilary is my home girl” are tops that were created so the target audience could show their support. The top helped to target all generations and people who were able to vote at this time. Harman sat next to the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, on the bench opposite the prime minister for the weekly Commons clash, wearing a T-shirt with the slogan: “This is what a feminist looks like”(Harman,2014). This lead to the Elle magazine getting involved and supporting the t-shirt by capturing images of politicians and celebrities wearing the t-shirt. This helped to increase the target audience age from 18+ of all classes.

Streetwear Due to the slogan t-shirts being one of the biggest trends to come from the Spring/Summer 2017 catwalk shows this has then led it to becoming a big trend on the street. Many high-street retailers such as Zara, Topshop and River Island have also took on this trend by selling a variety of different styles of slogan t-shirts with inspiration from the catwalk and designer brands.
