Dress: Gianni Bini (Dillard's) $119 Hat: Milli Starr $295

Dress: ASOS $89 Hat: Rose J. Monzyk $165

All the focus seems to be on the first Saturday in May. We, however, will start by focusing on the first Friday in May, the Longines Kentucky Oaks! The Oaks is the ultimate ladies day in racing in the United States. Churchill Downs has paired up with Bright Pink, the only national non-profit organization that focuses on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women. In this partnership, the Survivors' Parade brings the spotlight to a group of survivors who walk the historic track at Churchill Downs directly prior to the feature race.

In support of these strong and amazing women, on and off the track, Churchill Downs attendees deck themselves out in PINK! Incorporate pink into your outfit, anywhere from the dress to accessories. Then grab some bubbly, raise a glass with your ladies and have some fun!!

We sat down with Miss Megan Devine who works in sports television with networks such as NBC and TVG to pick her brain on horse racing and fashion! You’re originally from New York but you ended up in Louisville, KY. What brought you there? I grew up on Long Island but moved to Kentucky after graduating from high school to attend the Equine Industry Program at the University of Louisville. I have always been involved with horses as a rider and the networking opportunities in Kentucky were invaluable to me.

So, becoming Miss University of Louisville is pretty serious! What was that like? The pageant, an official Miss America prelim pageant, is sponsored every year by my sorority, Delta Zeta. All of the proceeds are donated to our philanthropies for speech and hearing. It's a great event and I'm definitely glad I did it (and won)! From there, I competed in Miss Kentucky and met some truly amazing women.

How has pageantry life helped to set you up for success for your future? I am definitely not your typical pageant girl! In fact, Miss University of Louisville was the very first one I had ever competed in. But I am a big believer in stepping outside of your comfort zone and challenging yourself in life. I learned that pageants require discipline, knowledge, commitment and a whole lot of confidence. I became more educated about everything from current events and politics to hair styling and stage makeup. Additionally, I was able to support my platform, Horses Healing Humans: Equine Assisted Therapies, which I am very passionate about. Burning question - how did you get involved in horse racing? I grew up going to the New York tracks with my Dad. I always had an interest in anything horses, but became more serious about it when I started the Equine Industry Program and working in the horse industry of Kentucky. I've been a part of the nationwide coverage of horse racing for NBC Sports since 2012, work for TVG during the Keeneland meets and have a blog on Horse Racing Nation called Horsenalities, through which I try to connect fans with their favorite horses on a more personal level.

What is your favorite part of it? To this day I'm still so enamored by the great sport of horse racing and the perfect combination of power and grace that exists in every fiber of a Thoroughbred. The horses are definitely my favorite part, but I also love the people that are involved in the industry who dedicate their lives to these horses. Their stories are absolutely amazing! What do you think our industry needs to do differently to attract more fans?

Why do you think fashion and horse racing go together? Fashion + Racing = A Party Racing is a great sport, but it is also a great social event. Historically, a day at the races was a way for ladies and gentlemen to show off their best attire. Anyone can get decked out for a day at the races and feel like a star! What is your favorite part of dressing up for the races?

Do you think tracks should have a dress code? On certain days, yes. If there are stakes races, absolutely! If it's a bunch of 5k claimers on a Wednesday...that's up to you. You wouldn't attend or partake sports like golf and polo wearing jeans and flip flops. Respect is a huge part of it, but I also think it's about keeping tradition and culture alive. And honestly, we can all use a little bit more of that these days. What are your fashion must-haves at the races?

I love it when an entire outfit comes together. The hair, The perfect dress, a little bling, dress, shoes, jewelry, purse, I think our industry struggles and a fabulous hat or and of course, the millinery. with strategic marketing. We fascinator. Promote events at racetracks, push the Megan's top tips for dressing up at the races: social aspect, and improve the fan experience. 1) Wear something that fits: dress, shoes and hat. A hat that's falling into your eyes and a pair of shoes or dress How can Fashion at the that's too tight can ruin a day at the races. Races be a part of that? FATR is helping to promote race days as fun social events for people to attend while also encouraging them to dress to impress. They are fabulous on social media which helps to engage an increasingly younger demographic.

2) Take the weather into account! A stylish rain coat looks better than none! 3) Be confident and don't be afraid to take risks. If you want to wear something bold or unusual, go for it. I always say, people are going to stare, you might as well give them something good to look at!

Mindy Lynn Coleman Queen of the Jocks

Mindy Coleman earned her title as “Queen of the Jockeys” as in-house counsel for the Jockeys’ Guild, Inc., the organization representing professional Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse jockeys in the United States. She makes her home in the Bluegrass, but can be found at any track across the country. The Guild provides certain benefits and serves as the voice in the racing industry for approximately 1,270 members, including active, retired and permanently disabled riders. When she was 8 years old, growing up in the Northwest, she told her parents she would be an attorney in the Kentucky equine industry. In addition to her first true love of horses, and even though she grew up on small racetracks, she was always fascinated by the traditions of the turf, and the stories of yesteryear when the men wore suits and the women wore perfectly

coordinated outfits, with matching dresses, hats, purses, shoes and parasols, regardless of their social class; when going to the races was a planned event; when all who went to track dressed up with pride; and when it seemed there so much despair, a day at the track and a special horse could provide our country with hope and the people with encouragement. Today, she is able to combine her career as an attorney with her passion for horse racing. Working for the Guild in the mornings at the track, she can be found wearing jeans, Barbour jacket, and Blundstone Boots. In the

afternoons, she is typically in a dress or suit, maintaining classic professionalism with a touch of modern fashion. However, if it is a big race day, whether it be one of the Triple Crown Races, Breeders’ Cup, or a weekend at one of boutique meets like Keeneland, Saratoga, or Del Mar, she will be wearing the appropriate fashion, adorned with coordinating jewelry and fascinator or hat. She is typically donning bright and bold colors, just like the silks that her jockeys are wearing representing the horse owners.

Mindy's Tip #1 Don’t try too hard! Be trendy, but stay classy and true to yourself so that you are comfortable. As cliché as it sounds, your true beauty will shine through.

“I get most of my pieces from Fashion at The Races or Two Chicks & Company in Lexington,” said Coleman. “Over the years, both Bri at FATR and Allison and all of the girls at Two Chicks have always helped coordinate all of my outfits from Oaks to Breeders’ Cup, and all of the races in between, no matter how short notice I have given. They always know that I have to have everything matching from my head to my feet, with the jewelry matching perfectly. Bri has milliners from all over the world, with all different styles to match whatever look I am attempting to achieve.” “While I love seeing all diversity of hats and fascinators of that First Friday and Saturday in May, I also like planning my attire for Preakness and Belmont. However, I must admit that my favorite days of racing is Breeders’ Cup. In addition to the two full days of amazingly

talented horses from all over the world, there are always beautiful people from so many countries, bringing fashion from England, Ireland, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, etc. My ultimate goal is to go to Royal Ascot and Melbourne to truly observe the fashions of racing. Until then, I will just admire from afar.” “I have to say what I truly appreciate about the vision of FATR and what it has accomplished thus far is bringing glamour back to racing. By the media and exposure, plus the coordinated events with Longines at Royal Ascot, Melboure, and events in the United States, it really has provided our racing fans with insight of European racing styles. I love the idea of having clubhouse dress codes and making racing a social scene again, not just at Keeneland and Del Mar, but at other meets too.

Mindy's Tip #2 Always have a pashmina that matches your outfit. No matter what racetrack you are at, and what the weathermen have forecasted, the luck of racing is always more powerful, and you never know can happen.

I feel like bringing fashion back to racing, both for men and women, is another opportunity to grow our fan base and help racing return to America’s pastime, as it once was, in generations past.” In addition to all the races, there are constantly fundraising events for everything from retired racehorses to the organization that Mindy is most passionate about, the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). The Guild and PDJF work closely together, with Guild Chairman John Velazquez, the Guild’s Vice Chairman, G.R. Carter, and jockey Jon Court on the Board of the PDJF, though they are completely separate organizations. .

For jockeys, it is not a matter of “if” they are going to get hurt, but it is only a matter of “when” they are going to get injured. The jockeys know that any given time, they can become one of the 60 permanently disabled riders who receives benefits from the PDJF, whether it is the great, Triple Crown winning and Secretariat Jockey Ron Turcotte, or Michael Straight, who was just starting his promising career when he was paralyzed. The PDJF is a 501(c)(3) public charity and industry based fund that provides financial assistance to jockeys, both Guild members and non-Guild members, who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. For more information about the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, please visit www.pdjf.org

Mindy;s Tip #3 Size matters. The larger the crowd at the event, the bigger my head-piece or hat will be for that event. This will assure that I have a certain amount of personal space. (I am only barely kidding about this.)

Mindy's Tip #4 Take Care of the Outfit You Can Never Change: Your Skin. All of our events are outside and your skin is exposed. I have taken my skin for granted until recently, but thanks to my dear friend, Anthony Pfeiffer-Gordillo with Michael Todd Organics, and Dr. Karla Stephen (married to my jockey, Anthony Stephen) at Center for Anti-Aging, it is my number one priority and the first thing that people notice, along with my smile of course.

Mindy, like so many of the others involved in horse racing as an industry participants or fans, enjoys the fact that the racing party never ends. With all of the various events throughout the year, and all over the country, Mindy’s closet is full of dresses. While many are brightly colored and perfect for racing, many are also simple and classic fashion pieces, from “Grace Kelly” pearls to little black cocktail dresses and traditional gowns. Mindy proves that you can be fashionable and professional all the time.
