DID YOU KNOW???? CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS TREES

• •

he word Christmas comes from the Old English “Cristes T maesse”/ Crīstesmæsse meaning “Christ’s Mass”. It is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ observed most commonly on December 25 all around the world by people of different races. The traditional three colours of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty. In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ. The abbreviation X on Xmas isn’t irreligious; the letter X is a Greek abbreviation for Christ.

he Germans made the first artificial Christmas trees out of T dyed goose feathers. Christmas trees are also known as the Yule-tree. Christmas trees are evergreen trees, usually either a fir tree, pine tree or spruce tree. It is believed that decorating Christmas trees originated in 16th century Germany when Christians would bring decorated trees into their homes. Christmas trees were first decorated with foods such as apples, nuts and dates. According to the Guinness world records, the tallest Christmas tree ever cut was a 221-foot Douglas fir that was displayed in 1950 at the Northgate Shopping Centre in Seattle, Washington. Christmas trees usually grow for about 15 years before they are sold.

he first person to decorate a Christmas tree was reportedly T the Protestant reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546). According to legend, he was so moved by the beauty of the stars shining between the branches of a fir tree; he brought home an evergreen tree and decorated it with candles to share the image with his children. Many parts of the Christmas tree can actually be eaten, with the needles being a good source of Vitamin C.

SANTA •

laus is based on a real person, St. Santa Nikolas of Myra C (also known as Nikolas the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolas of Bari), who lived during the fourth century born in Patara (modern-day Turkey). SANTA has different names around the world - Kris Kringle in Germany, Le Befana in Italy, Pere Noel in France and Deushka Moroz (Grandfather Frost) in Russia.

SEASONS GREETINGS CARDS • • • •

he first commercial Christmas card was produced by Sir T Henry Cole in London in 1843. The traditional greeting reads “wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”. ROBINS on cards were a joke 150 years ago when postmen wore red tunics and were named after them. THE first commercial Christmas cards were commissioned by civil servant Sir Henry Cole in London in 1843

GIFTING •

• •

he tradition of putting tangerines in stockings comes from T the 12th-century French, who left socks full of fruit, nuts and tangerines at the houses of the poor. Hanging presents on trees may come from the Druids who believed the tree was the giver of all good things. Remember there is more joy in giving than in receiving!!

As we all know Christmas is a time for giving and receiving! Spread the love and share something with someone! Share a smile, share a hug, and share some candy!! WISHING YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Women are complicated and not all of them love the same things. Here are 4 basic types of women and gifting ideas they would love.

• The Chic

This woman loves to look good and smell good at any time of the day and she is very much aware of fashion trends. The best gifts for this type of woman are gifts that will make her look good, for example - clothes, shoes, hand bags, jewelry sets, make-up sets, fragrances (her favourite is always the best option) and everyday little gadgets like a hair straightener, hair dryer, foot spa etc. The trick to touching her heart is to buy the trending things.

• The Home maker

This type of woman loves putting her home in order and having every big and little thing that makes the home as comfortable as possible. The best gifts for this type of woman are home oriented things like Kitchen ware, for example a microwave, coffee grinder, coffee maker, rice cooker, blender etc.

• The Gadget girl

This type of woman is technologically advanced and she likes to have the latest technological gadgets. The best gift for her will be the latest cell phone, tablet or laptop. This type of woman usually likes watches as well so a wrist watch could also be a perfect gift for her.

• The Book worm

This type of woman is very intelligent and loves learning something new every day, she also

reads for fun. The best gift for this type of woman is a good book written by her favourite author. A tablet will also suffice.

Gifts for Him

Men see the world through blue eyes and women see the world through pink eyes, so when you are buying a gift for a man you need to put on “blue-tinted glasses” in order to pick the right gift. With men there are 3 basic types. Here are some ideas to help you.

• The Formal Man

This type of man is very formal in the way he does his things, even the way he talks is formal. He is highly organized most of the time, quite intelligent. The best gift for this type of man will be a wallet, watch, fragrance, hair clipper and formal clothes but since its Christmas you can get him a trendy blazer to spice up his wardrobe.

• The Artistic Man

He is very creative and enjoys travelling. He can relate to the romantic side of women. It is easy to buy this type of a man a gift. Best gift ideas for him will be fragrances, undies, belt, luggage and anything that is unique and shows creativity. Warning! Don’t give him a similar gift as the previous years.

• The Gadget Man

This type of man is into cars, sports and gadgets. The best gift you can get him is a gadget, so try the latest cell phone, head sets, laptop and any trending devices you can find.

Kids

Kids look forward to Christmas more than anything, the good food and the presents just make their world wonderful. This is also the time they get more new clothes. The worst thing you can do is to get your children a present that they do not like, because that will spoil their Christmas mood. Here are some nice ideas for gifts that will keep them excited this Christmas. • Educational toys like puzzles is a great gift idea. • Gadgets are the safest way to go because many kids love these. • Hair accessories are a good gift for girls. • Watches are a good gift for both boys and girls. • C elebrity perfumes have also proved to be quite popular among the youth. • For the child that loves to read and write, books and colouring pencils are a good idea. You can also get a personalized book to make it more exciting for them. Happy shopping to you all………………………………

Decoding the

dress code

D

ress codes are always a tricky thing. We have all been there - you receive an invitation that calls for a creative black tie or festive attire and suddenly you are more confused as to what to wear to the event than if the invitation had said nothing at all. Dress codes involve myriad rules and regulations and countless dos and don’ts, and in certain situations, these are pretty much set in stone. Because misreading a dress code can result in serious embarrassment on your part, it is a good idea to get a firm grip on what various major dress codes entail. An invitation with a formal dress code seems fairly straightforward, however, it is imperative to remember that it is not absolute. There are gradations within this classification and these will vary from one event to another. Believe it or not there are actually specific expectations behind some of the most confusing dress code suggestions and I am going to help you decode the most commonly misunderstood ones. Business formal. This is the dress code suggestion at many daytime semi-formal events (particularly work lunches and conferences). It calls for a suit and tie for the guys and a tailored dress or a pantsuit for women. The idea is to wear something business appropriate, that also feels dressed up. Dress like you are about to close a huge deal, so leave the celebratory outfit for after work hours. Business casual. When going to a function that has this dress code, please do not wear sneakers and ripped jeans. The idea is to look relaxed and less fussy than you would at a business formal function. Ladies you can never go wrong with a pair of pants, and a tweed blazer, or khaki pants with a collared shirt.

between the hours of 6pm and 8pm, then you should opt for a cocktail dress, but ensure the length of the dress only creeps up to just above the knee, and stockings should be worn. You may consider wearing separates if they are matching and are as elegant as a dress e.g. a silk organza blouse with a full satin skirt that hits at your ankles, but avoid wearing trousers when Black Tie dress code has been stated. If the drinks reception is followed by dinner and dancing at a lavish location then you can consider a full length dress or ball gown, but this is not mandatory for events that state Black Tie dress code. Festive dress code. Now that it is that time of the year again, this dress code is going to be popping up on most of your invitations. Festive attire is similar to cocktail attire but with a holiday bent, say a sparkly sequin dress or red satin dress. Also you can never go wrong with a little black dress accessorized with gold or red for that perfect Christmas sparkle. Always remember the golden rules; • When in doubt, wear black. • The shorter the dress, the higher the neckline.

Xoxo Merry Christmas Love what you wear Elizabeth Gwara

Black tie. While this seems to point out very clearly what is required of the men, it can be confusing for us girls. It is important to note that black tie functions always start after 6pm. If you are invited to a drinks party with a Black Tie dress code

Extend your smart phone’s battery life…

O

ne thing that has surely dominated the information age is the use of Smartphones across the globe. When it comes to what you can do with your smart phone, the world is your oyster. However every Smartphone owner knows that Smartphone batteries don’t tend to last very long, but here are some easy tricks that can ensure your battery lasts longer; Switch off the vibration Believe it or not, the vibration function actually chows more battery life than an actual ringtone. Only use it when it’s absolutely necessary and avoid pairing your ringtone up with a vibration. If you’re in a theatre or a meeting, for example, and you can’t have your ringtone on, rather switch your phone to silence and keep it in view. Your battery will surely thank you! Dim the brightness You will be amazed at the difference this simple step can make as far as your battery life is concernedSome Smartphones have an “auto-brightness”. Alternatively, you can manually adjust the brightness, keeping it permanently dim enough to save battery and bright enough to read. The good thing about manually adjusting is that you can change it throughout the day. For example, you can have the brightness slightly dimmed during the day because there is a lot of external light or you can have it brighter in the evenings when there is very little external light. Shorten your screen timeout This tip is especially for those of you that don’t often lock their Smartphones after every interaction with it. The timeout refers to how many seconds or even minutes your Smartphone auto-locks or switches the screen off after you’ve interacted with it. Shortening your screen timeout will minimise your Smartphone’s power consumption, resulting in a longer battery life.

Use location only when necessary Many apps may request permission to access your location and, for many of them, it’s not an absolute necessity for the app to operate. For example, it’s important for a “Maps” app to know your location, but it isn’t particularly imperative for your camera app to use it. Choose which apps you allow to access your location because when apps that use this are open, even in the background, they’re constantly sending and receiving signals and these take up a lot of battery life. Shutdown all apps not in use Always make sure that the apps you’re not using are completely shut down and not just minimised. Sometimes you might think an app is closed because you exited it by pressing the home button, but on many Smartphone this merely minimises the app, it doesn’t close it completely. If you are an iphone user, you do this by double tapping the home button and close the apps on the screen. Lessen push notifications Push notifications can really deplete your battery unnecessarily through many different mechanisms – the sending and receiving of signals, lighting up your Smartphone and makes your Smartphone either ring or vibrate. Disabling unnecessary push notification will make a significant difference in how quickly your battery is drained. In fact, the best option is to only allow push notifications for text messages (SMS and Whatsapp) and missed calls. This will also lessen the amount of times you’re distracted in a day. Finally: Invest in a portable Power Bank; it really can be a life saver this CHRISTMAS!

Festive Season

Style Tips

The festive season is upon us, it’s time to see those you haven’t seen all year and the most important part of all this is to make sure you look good. Holidays are a fun time to celebrate and be close to your family and loved ones. Obtaining a subtle, yet powerful holiday look that will be memorable is simple and can be achieved by anyone. To obtain this look, we have put together some tips anyone can use. As usually, we encourage you to take what fits you and your style, and not to consider these are unbreakable rules..Basically, we want you to wear the same things you normally wear, it is unnecessary to break or leave your style if you are comfortable with it and don’t need to change it. The trick is to add a holiday twist to it. Wear a colorful tuxedo or jacket Most holiday parties don’t require you to dress up completely- but it doesn’t mean that you can just show up in anything. It is nice to look good and suits and a suit jacket will do you wonders. It is universally flattering and will bring up the elegance level a notch. A tuxedo can be special, perfect for a New Year’s party. They are holiday-appropriate, and make a great visual impact. The tuxedo is a strong piece as it is, and the holidays are one of those rare occasions when you can wear a tuxedo for that special dinner party. While generally a tuxedo is black, a colorful one will keep the elegant and formal tone, but it will express a lot of cheer and can be worn at a Christmas party or on New Year’s Eve. Of course, you don’t necessarily need to wear a tuxedo; you can also take your blazer or jacket to the next level.

Accessories A very elegant way to express the spirit of a holiday through your look is by adding one or more seasonal accessories. No matter what you are wearing, accessorizing will make a statement. However, always consider that you should not wear too many accessories and also remember that you should incorporate the colors of your accessories in the color scheme of your overall look. Your wrist should always make a statement, you my also need to keep your pair of sunglasses close for those sunny days. Opt for Dark Trousers or Jeans A darker wash of jeans and trousers and you will instantly look fancier, not to mention is you spill any holiday on them, the wet spot will not show up nearly as noticeable as it does on lighter shades. Choose the Right Pair of Shoes Parties are all about being on your feet, making your way around from place to the other. That’s why choosing the right shoe is very important because it will cradle your feet. Options include, Boat shoes, sneakers and sandals for the hot days. In the end, we advise you to wear whatever you feel reflects who you are and whatever makes you happy. If you want to incorporate the spirit of the holidays in your outfits, these Christmas style tips will help you do that. Have a great Christmas and don’t forget that Christmas should not only be around you, but in you as well.
