fashion for philanthropy
ABOUT FASHION FOR PHILANTHROPY Fashion for Philanthropy (FFP), a club at Fordham University, works to promote interest and knowledge of the fashion industry and its various components. FFP seeks to use the medium of self-expression, a fundamental element of fashion, to express the Jesuit ideals of social responsibility and creative individuality. Throughout the year, Fashion for Philanthropy hosts several events focusing on the different aspects of fashion whether it be through television, business, modeling, or design. Fashion for Philanthropy strives to expose students to current issues and trends within the fashion industry. The Jesuit philosophy of being men and women for others has inspired the club to donate its proceeds to philanthropic organizations. “I WAS INSPIRED BY THE VERY VERY EARLY DAYS OF PUNK - YOUNG KIDS WHO DIDN’T HAVE THE MONEY FOR LEATHER AND SO FIGURED THEIR OWN THINGS OUT. THE DESIGNS ARE VERY SIMPLE AND ALMOST PRIMITIVE TO REFLECT THAT KIND OF REBELLIOUS DIY AESTHETIC. I WANTED TO STAY VERY TRUE TO THAT TRADITION WITH THE MATERIALS AND THE SHAPES THAT I USED.” - E. SCHMITT

“MY GOAL FOR THIS MINI-COLLECTION WAS TO SHOW A CONTRAST BETWEEN DELICATE FEMININITY AND DRAMATIC AGGRESSION. THE BLACK LACE AND DRAMATIC CUTS WERE USED TO ACCENT LARGE AMOUNTS OF EXPOSED SKIN, WHILE THE FLOWING CREPE SATIN AND SOFT DRAPES WERE USED TO KEEP A MYSTERIOUS, FLEETING LOOK. I WAS PARTICULARLY INSPIRED BY THE SONG ‘SISTERS OF THE MOON’ BY FLEETWOOD MAC. I WANTED MY MODELS TO LOOK LIKE MODERN DAY, HIGH-FASHION WITCHES ABOUT TO GO TO DO A RITUAL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GARMENT DISTRICT! AND THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB PRESENTING WHAT I IMAGINED!” - J. SEGOVIA

“WHEN I LEARNED THAT THIS YEAR’S THEME WAS PUNK MY FIRST IMPULSE WAS TO SUBVERT IT, TO SOFTEN IT. I THOUGHT, PEARLS BEFORE STUDS, SOLIDS OVER PLAIDS, WHITE BEFORE BLACK. I WANTED TO SHINE A LIGHT WHERE EVERYTHING WAS DARK. INITIALLY, MY IDEA WAS TO TAKE OLD LEATHER JACKETS AND PEARL THEM UP, BUT THEN IT OCCURRED TO ME THAT PUNK MEANS SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT’S POKING OUT OF A SLEEVE OR A COLLAR. SOMEHOW I FOUND MYSELF LOOKING AT VICTORIAN ERA POSTMORTEM PHOTOS, AND THE ONES THAT STUCK WITH ME MOST WERE OF BABIES IN LITTLE WHITE GOWNS, AND I LIKED THE IDEA THAT BEHIND ALL THE PRIM AND PROPER, THERE WAS SOMETHING DARKER, ESPECIALLY IN A TIME WHERE MORTALITY WAS SO MUCH MORE AT ARMS LENGTH.” - P. DELUCA

“WILD VILLAGERS IS A BRAND NEW CLOTHING AND APPAREL COMPANY. WE FOCUS ON EYE-CATCHING OUTFITS THAT ARE STYLISH, FLIRTY, AND INTERCHANGEABLE. ALTHOUGH THE FOCUS IS CONCERT AND DANCE WEAR, ALMOST ANY PIECE CAN BE WORN AT A CLUB, THE BEACH, THE POOL, FOR HALLOWEEN, OR JUST WITH JEAN-SHORTS ON A HOT DAY. WE KNOW THE PEOPLE WE ARE MAKING THE CLOTHES FOR BECAUSE, WE ARE YOU! WE GO TO FESTIVALS AND DANCE FOR HOURS TOO! THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY GENERIC TOPS AND BOTTOMS YOU CAN WEAR TO THESE TYPES OF EVENTS, BUT WHAT IF YOU WANT TO BE UNIQUE AND REMEMBERED? THAT IS WHY WE STARTED MAKING OUR OWN DESIGNS. AFTER HAVING BEEN HAGGLED BY DROOLING GIRLS, NOT GUYS, ASKING, ‘WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR OUTFIT!?’ WILD VILLAGERS WAS BORN. GOING TO A FESTIVAL IS ALWAYS A NEW ADVENTURE, AND WE CREATE OUTFITS SPECIFICALLY MADE TO ENHANCE THIS EXPERIENCE. EXPRESS YOURSELF, FEEL CONFIDENT, AND BE REMEMBERED BY WEARING WILD VILLAGERS. OUR CLOTHES ARE FUN, EDGY, AND COMFORTABLE WITH A COMBINATIONS OF PRINTS, THE RIGHT COLORS, AND SEWN IN POCKETS FOR YOUR PHONE, MONEY, AND GOODIES!”
