W
elcome to the new face of Fashion Odds, Ladies and Gentlemen! As we embark into a new year, we considered bringing a fresh outlook of our magazine to further keep both us and yourself inspired by our fashion and entertainment discoveries. As you may have initially noticed, the original "Fashion Odds" logo was replaced by a simplified logo, as represented by a striking "F" and a vertical aligned "Fashion Odds". We also like to extend our appreciation to our fans for supporting us when we began only as a Facebook blog, and eventually transforming into a website and now a magazine. Hop into the Fashion Odds "Get Connected" family tree, for ways to stay interacted and for contribution opportunities.

Alyssa Larsen
ALWAYS A MODEL CITIZEN INTERVIEWS | CHRIS PARKER
What was being a part of the Pop-Star Academy like? I love pop-star academy! The photographer is an amazing woman--she is so fun and caring. I felt very comfortable around her. Her compliments towards me during the shoot really made me feel like I really had what it takes. Part of your prize within winning Popstar Acadeemy was to be featured in our cover editorial. How was your first official modeling experience? The experience I had for the shoot of the cover magazine was truly amazing! Right away Parker and I hugged. He's such great guy and you can see the passion he has for Fashion Odds and photography.
T
he following two local models, Mandy Peterson and Alyssa Larsen, know that you don’t only serve a good face to be a model, but you also have to be a model citizen—a role model you can look up to. In December ’13, Alyssa won Pop Star Academy’s modeling competition and look no further below how she indulges in her modeling aspiration. Mandy has worked with some of the Twin Cities most talented photographers as she has also played between print and runway modeling and pageantry.
Mandy Peterson What did it feel like to take top 15 and “Miss Congeniality” at Miss Minnesota USA? CD DIY CHANDLIER
To make top 15 in a year where the competition was tough turned
into a great accomplishment. However, miss congeniality... Wow I still get goose bumps thinking about that. What an amazing honor to have my peers give me this title, that itself was like winning.
What's next on your modeling journey? This year you will hopefully see a lot of me as I have set the bar even higher for myself. I am currently working towards my next goal which is to compete in my first fitness competition in April.
PUNK
INTERNATIONAL FASHION
P
THE PREVAILING KOREAN IDENTITY.
unk in today’s context is still respected and maintained by a massive population across the world. A new hub for punk is Korea. Being one of the latest adopters, Korean pop culture views the look and the fashion style rather than the original meaning of Punk. Punk fashion as a way to identify and create the artistic individual, is their outtake on the the punk movement.
It would be unnecessary and inaccurate to identify the punks in Korea as posers. It would be more acceptable to identify them as observers. In Korea as well as the rest of the world, style and views are exchanged over the big screen and also through other forms of the media. At times, and maybe most times, the lifestyle that inspired the fashion gets lost in the exchange. What becomes instead of a unique style dreamt up by the individuals fully representing their values as a subculture is a style adopted by individuals. Korean raw punk doesn’t seem to exist, rather than solely identifying with idea and using that idea and those values as inspiration for how to dress, how outsiders dress is used as the primary source of artistic inventiveness. In the Land of the Morning Calm, punk coexists peacefully along with hip hop, high fashion, and a number of other specific styles. It has transgressed into the daily lifestyle to infamous entertainment tastemakers such as 2NE1 and Gdragon. At the end of the day just like any other purebred that is stricken by a lover of another motherland, attraction isn’t something you can control; it isn’t something you can avoid. HOV Jay Z – Magna Carter World Tour In Review Jigga man graced St. Paul, MN with his presence for his tour stop at the Excel Center on Saturday Nov 30th. The Magna Carter tour was highly anticipated here in the twin cities as Jay Z has not come to town in about a decade. The energy in the Excel center was magical!! Fans cheered as Jay Z hit the stage performing big hits from his latest album Magna Carter Holy Grail, as well as taking us down memory lane with some of his past hits such as Dead Presidents ll, Jigga What, 99 problems, Big Pimpin and Hard Knock Life. Jay Z was a one man show which made the performance feel that much more intimate. There were no singers, dancers, hype-men or opening acts. The spotlight was all on Hov—and he delivered one hell of a show! During a brief intermission the DJ of the night, Timberland, whom is famously known as a producer working with Aaliyah and Missy Elliot, graced us with some beats on the spot. His ability to make catchy tracks was evident as he had the crowd going wild during his set. Williams

The ultimate peice to own is the fringe trend. Distance away from its origin of grunge and hipster, it is the next "ah" thing to twirl in. As also executed by Calvin Klein, Emilio Pucci and Marc Jacobs spring 2014 collection, it gives another reason to flaunt it.

HOW TO:
Step 1: Lay out your t-shirt on a large bin bag . Place another plastic bag inside so bleach does not seep through to the other side.
Step 5: Use the white paint to flick 'stars' on to the shirt with a stiff paintbrush or an old toothbrush.
Step 2: Carefully but randomly spray with the bleach. After rusty marks begin to appear, speed up this process with your hair dryer on a low setting.
Step 6: Add bigger white star clusters with your selected brush or drip blobs of bleach on to the shirt to form a lovely constellation effect.

SPRING 2013 COLLECTION
applaud you for taking the Q: We opportunity to compete in the Project Runway TV Show. What’s something you wish you didn’t create? In contrast, what was the piece you were the most proud of? I regret the team challenge design for A: the Stilt Walkers with Viktor. It was a tragic! I should have insisted on us each sketching and comparing ideas...instead of being nice! Ha! I won the first challenge, "Come as you are", where we had to use only what we slept in that night. I almost walked up to the producer to tell her that I wanted to be off the show about an hour into the challenge. I just felt this huge wave of fear coming over me. Fortunately, I kept going and slowly the fear left. had a long career. Do you reflect Q: You've about something you wish you would have done throughout your career? I had been more involved and aware of A: Ithewishbusiness side of the fashion industry. Today more than ever knowledge of the industry and the business side is as important as the creative side!
are your favorite designers right Q: Who now? question, but it is easier to name A: Tough my least favorites. I admire the two designers for Valentino, and their beautiful and chic collections that will be worn for years. I do wish they would add a touch more sex appeal though! And then there is Albert Kriemler designer of AKRIS, from Switzerland. Exquisite fabrics, construction and esthetics! I find it very hard to say anything good about Raf Simon from Dior or Alexander Wang at Balenciaga. They are designing under the names of two of the most famous and iconic names in fashion. It's one train wreck after another. I don't know who is worse!
took a hiatus for years. What was that Q: You due to? career was at it's height, working for A: My HALSTON, enjoying success and loving my life when in the early 1990's. However, AIDS claimed the life of my two best friends, David and Gordon, just one day apart, who were lovers. I had introduced them way back in high school. A year later my partner of 18 years, John, died of AIDS. With these losses along with many others I turned to alcohol to blot out all my feelings of loss and anger. I really lost with everything. I left NYC, moved home to my family in D.C. to try and get it together. I went back to NYC several times trying to move on with my life but again my drinking took over. I was in and out of rehabs for almost 17 years. Looking back at how I drank and the consequences, it's amazing that I am still alive, (4 dui's and one head on collision for starters). Gratefully after years of trying to get and stay sober I now have over five years sober! In these five years I have been blessed with meeting some amazing people and old friends from years past ALL in recovery! It was these friends with their support and that of my family that helped me finally get sober, gained the courage to do the next right thing, return to fashion design and take the leap of faith to go on Project Runway. a last note---do you project that the Q: On fashion world will eventually incorporate more technology and science than just fabrics? will in the design and A: Definitely construction of fabrics. I believe as we move farther into this century, this fad of buying so many clothes, designs, trends will end.

Rosie Mercado
osie Mercado has many talents as a model, business woman and acting. Some people try to balance it all, but because of Miss. Mercado’s ability do so; we named her this issue’s “Top Model”. She exudes confidence and takes on many challenges to further inspire women in all that they do.
Q: For an aspiring model that is not a plus size, what advice can you offer them?
important to understand the purpose you A:t’s are doing it and what results you want to obtain. I think modeling is an art and practice is important if you want to be the best. Create your own niche and I don’t be afraid to take risk every opportunity is an experience or a lesson learned. Don’t worry about what other people say. Take the good and say thank you. Take the bad and become better! A humble heart is a wise heart you have to chase the dreams that make you happy.
a mother, mogul and top plus size Q: You're model. How do you do it all?
A: I am a driven business woman. I am not shy.
My parents have taught me to always be proud to tell people my story of everything I had to do to accomplish my dreams. I also feel the once I achieve a goal, I find myself asking what is next. I am not a women who likes to just sit around I prefer good company over watching tv and a good book and learning something new over sitting around and doing nothing! People always ask where do I get the energy and I think it comes from wanting to be better and being blessed to be alive. I think when you hit rock bottom a couple times in your life you learn to want to stay away from that feeling and find purpose in living.
any of your children want to follow in Q: Do your footsteps with hosting, business, and modeling?
kids have dreams of their own. My son A:My Alex who is 6 wants to become a dancer and
Q: What's next for the Rosie Empire? take over the world! I want to keep A: To designing as I am working on my next spring collection. I am also working on my weight loss journey. I want to transform my body to a toned size 18. Acting is in my future! I believe my purpose will be fulfilled in God's timing and it’s important for me to take opportunities that educate inspire and open doors for other powerful women!
my daughter Isabella starting to find the love of the arts with theatre. My son Valentino loves color, fabrics textures and the art of cooking. What ever they choose to do I will support them as long as they are the best in what they love and they understand that life is about paying it forward. Life is about sharing your talents with the world that’s how you find happiness. I am proud of my kids and I have learned so much from them. My kids are leaders and I know the best is coming there way!
Q:
What are your goals as a top plus size model?
A:
My goals will always be to inspire women to always break the barriers of what is symbolized as beauty. INTERVIEW| CHRIS PARKER

MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER'S PATTI STANGER CALLS NOT HAVING KIDS HER BIGGEST REGRET, OPENS UP ABOUT ABORTION IN HER 20's ARTICLE| NATALIE, FINN, EONLINE.COM
Patti Stanger is full of advice for the wealthy singles she sets up on Millionaire Matchmaker—but that certainly doesn't mean that she's had all of the right answers for herself over the years. Asked what her biggest regret was during a Q&A moderated by OK!, during which fans submitted questions via Twitter, the 52-year-old Bravo star said simply, "My biggest regret is I didn't have children." She did get pregnant, in her twenties, and chose to have an abortion. "I didn't have enough money, and I didn't think it was OK to have a child and be a single parent," she recalled. "Now look, everybody's doing that. And I think that I didn't find the right guy at the right time to have one with, I guess, but I don't think I would adopt and be single. "I think I would've eventually found a guy, settled down, got the picket fence, and I just didn't meet the right person at the right time," she continued. "I wasn't lucky like a lot of other people. And that's my biggest regret, not having kids." And Stanger doesn't want those who are still looking for love to give up hope. "I found one on Plenty of Fish!" she exclaimed, giving a shout-out to the free online dating site (and presumably she meant a man, not a mackerel). "You really have to look at it like, you just need one and your'e done," Stanger advised. "If you constantly keep scoping the field and looking for the biger and better deal, you're going to be alone. You need to find some good guy, like a 7 or 8, that you can put a nice pair of jeans on, cut his hair, get him a suntan , and sweet nice and warm, makes a good living, andhe's makes youand laugh—and then call it a day." anger first revealed last year that she had an abortion when she was 26, calling it a "horrible time." "I remember this sense of paranoia," she told Fox News, "and I was always wondering whether this would be the last time, would this be my last shot at having a child. I am all for pro-choice, but it really did make me stop and think."

In 50 years, the iconic Oak Grill restaurant at Macy’s Downtown Minneapolis underwent its first significant renovation. Some new changes included updated signature dishes, lighting throughout the dinning room and paintings. With additional changes better saved for a visit, the menu also captivated our tastes buds. We especially favored the braised short ribs out of the variety samples as also voted by Carly Aplin, CW Twin Cites TV Host. Guests visiting the “new” Oak Grill will perhaps experience a contemporary vibe as pushed by Warren Wolfe, the Group Vice president for Foodservice for Macy's, as we have also experienced the same jive.

lease welcome our first international shoe designer from Columbia:Co-founders, Andres Niño and Nicholas Hurtado of Beckett Simonon. Here, they share insights on their Fall Goodyear Welted collection and tips for emerging entreprenuers. Q: What was the inspiration for the fall 2013 shoe collection---Fall Goodyear Welted collection? A: We wanted to compose a collection for the contemporary men. This includes good craftsmanship, quality and well designed products. Q: Why was the earthtone color palette chosen for this collection, considering that the rainbow showered this year’s fall color trends? A: We looked to bring more diversity for men’s wardrobe. The diversity is meant to be functional and meet their needs. It is also versatile for all men and represents the gentlemen. Q: What is one sign to show you have created an exceptional shoe design? A: Customer feedback from products!
It’s a way to record their feelings about the products. By considering customer feedback, it makes us feel more confident in our shoes. Q: The direct-to-consumer business model sets the foundation of your business, to provide affordable shoes to consumers. What does the direct-to-consumer model mean to our non-business and marketing readers? A: It means to eliminate the middlemen. It reduces complexity, while delivering the product straight to the customers. This approach also benefits the price, making our shoes more affordable. It also gives our customer the chance to talk to the brand directly, so you have an experience with the brand. Q: For young and emerging entrepreneurs with minimum capital investment, what are some tips to initiate a business? A: One way is to reach out to family and friends. Develop your samples and have them test them. Kick starter is also a popular take on. You should also be flexible with ideas and adjust to new products with different markets. Once you have your product (and/or service) made, keep pushing yourself.

DEVELOPING THE NEW YOU THROUGH HEALTH
Commercial weight loss companies like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig continue to lose market share to do-it-yourself diets and free apps. When it comes to weight loss, people want flexibility, value and
convenience. In a year in which the stock market has surged, Weight Watchers has lost nearly half its market value. Why? Commercial weight loss programs like Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and Nutrisystem are being leapfrogged by free apps that let people customize their approach to their needs. In our annual survey of DietBet players, MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Fooducate have been among the most popular food-tracking apps. Our players also use exercise apps such as RunKeeper, MapMyRun and Couch to 5k as tools to motivate them to exercise. It remains to be seen, however, whether calorie-counting apps are sustainable as our players tell us that they fatigue from logging everything they eat.

People turn to goal-oriented social networks to help them change habits. With Twitter's IPO—and LinkedIn and Facebook's stock price
doubling—2013 may be remembered as the year of social networking. But a new kind of social networking has quietly emerged and it doesn't connect you to people you know. Instead, next-gen social networks let you discover and befriend strangers who share a health-related goal, like losing weight or exercising more. NYU's Clay Shirky has said that "goal-oriented social networking" is the future of social networking and it's starting to get traction in sensitive areas of personal health where people don't feel comfortable sharing on Facebook with real-world friends — for example, updates relating to your struggles with weight loss and workout behaviors. Expect this to see a lot more of structured social

While workout-at-home technologies have been around since Jane Fonda's videodiscs, this technology is hitting its stride in terms of interactivity and realism. We see this as the beginning of a new chapter in interactive home workouts with technologies like Fitstar, Wello, and Daily Burn. At the same time, expect to see all these games become social, like everything else in our lives. Social support networks around health-oriented games can provide a powerful combination of confidential support and peer-to-peer motivation. Thanks to new technologies, getting in shape has never been more fun. Is it still exercise if it’s fun our user are flocking to anything that makes getting in shape fun—or at least less onerous—like a running app that simulates being chased by zombies (Zombies, Run!), mud runs (like Spartan Race and Tough Mudder) that turn endurance events into thrilling obstacle courses, and glow-in-the-dark night runs that are part road-race, part rave (Electric Run). What all these activities have in common is they bring people together to exercise in a way that doesn't feel like work. And thanks to technology, it doesn't need to entail coming together physically. Nike Plus popularized virtual competitions where you can run "with" friends who actually live across the country. MapMyRun, Runkeeper, and Runtastic have become some of the most popular apps. And Strava users obsess about winning the "king of the mountain" trophy against strangers who ride in their towns. What's interesting to us is seeing this kind of virtual competition go from physical workouts to lifestyle competitions as people can now compete to lose weight and eat better. The idea of applying virtual competition to just about any healthy behavior is intriguing and we see fun and "social motivation" emerging as powerful trends in 2014.
